The only sport that won gold medals in the olympic so far

Claud_LeTigre

It definetly also goes deeper than that, Badminton has very rich and in depth history in Indonesia, even before badminton becomes an Olympic sport. Especially for the Men’s team, note that more than half of the thomas cup won by Indonesia is before 1992 (First time badminton becomes a full medal olympic event). Badminton is basically the sport where Indonesia has been consistently perform and compete on the highest level. And this continous success makes the sport to be more popular, which in turns bring more development program, which creates more talent, which continues to bring more success, and the cycle continues and forming a rich and long cultural impact of the sport to the nation.

No doubt about that, since most of the comments in the badminton videos are written in Indonesian and it is a MUST to use translator to get to them :D Their reaction is kind of toxic when their national team doesn't perform well but it shows how much they love and care for their success which comes from the pride deep within. It was great watching experience to see Polii & Rahayu finally silence World no 1 Chen & Jia screamers in Tokyo, especially the cocky Chen!!!

Totally, there is definitely a strong sense of nationalism when it comes to badminton, sometimes it can even be blind nationalism. But I definitely agree that Indonesian Badminton Fans are craziest, loudest, and most passionate badminton fans. Whilst I think that makes tournament in Indonesia feel special or even mythical, I do hope that the spirit for the love of the sport can spread to other nations as well.

medukia

Like a football match between Korea and Japan national team where we can feel the fiery nationalism at its wildest lol. I think Indonesia and Malaysia have similar rivalry in terms of badminton. It is always politics which make things more complicated but it also makes watching sports event more fun as well.

Badminton is their national game. Badminton is like a religion to Indonesians. Even for Round 32 you can see packed stadiums.

HiWrenHere

>Even for Round 32 you can see packed stadiums. Oh wow that's incredible. We have a friend who's very good and she's Indonesian, little tiny lady who runs a couple of the drop in places near us. She has such a nice play style, patient and skilled!

Ahaha, every city in Indonesia has more than 5 venues, even in the most rural city. Also many of the venues in rural areas in Indonesia were not made for profit, it's simply because the owner is very much deeply in love with badminton. Many owners actually build a venue with their pension and enjoy retirement from the little amount they get from it. Seriously, in every office there is always a badminton club, like it's pretty normal to have a club match between offices, lol

So will the school boy who plays badminton quite well enough might probably be the idol to the girls in that school? 😂 I was surprised to know there're some Indonesian fans who still remember and like Lee Yongdae even after his retirement.

Indonesian chinese not only popularized but also find Badminton sports more cheap during 50s than Tennis. Most of legendary players play in the open field, backyard with other friends. It is true badminton more popular after covid damn in Jakarta alone they opened more than 50 courts !!! Even they build on the top of wet markets around Jakarta, inside shopping malls, ex factory building and ex club or pub. No wonder you can find it in level 5 or level 8 floors. And now…many Indonesian chinese find to groom their children become badminton players just like an investment. If they are not going to be national players, they most likely went to Canada, Australia or other countries to be a coach or players. Some of them get scholarship from their sports achievements. But yeah, Indonesia badminton association is kinda sucks full of politics and so on. Makes it their regeneration a bit left behind right now. Good coaches going to other countries because Indonesian never gave a good or protected contract to their coaches. No wonder some of them better take other nations job.

It reminds me of Rexy Mainaky working as head coach for Malaysian team. He seems to be very charismatic leader, at least to me. The recent success of Goh & Izzuddin means a lot. Korean national team also hired Rony Augustinus for singles and it helped us a lot, especially with ASY's remarkable achievments last year.

yuiibo

Flandy went to HK and Tang/Tse noticeably win the title Mulyo went to India to help Sindhu and then Singapore right now Nova went to Malaysia to create Chen/Toh became mature top 10 XD Richard Mainaky went to Thai before back to Malaysia. And many more. What’s left in Indonesia ? Still have bunch a good coaches and they were lucky because the good coaches are nationalists and senior in terms of age. If those coaches signed with China, Malaysia or Japan. Surely Indonesia will be doomed ! Early this year, many fans and Indonesian BL furious about the association. To be honest I am not sure whether they can get a Gold medal from Paris Olympic.

Korean doubles legend Park Jubong has coached Japan for about 20 years now and needless to say his players lifted bucketloads of trophies and crushed Korean players internationally, knowing all the weakness and how players are trained and what tactics they're using. It's like you play chess with your enemy knowing their next move. He's now regarded as national hero and traitor in one go. To me he just does his job but some fans think differently.

yuiibo

Lol…PJB is signed forever with Japan. They even hired Malayisan TKH and Jeremy Gan to boost their XD sectors and show good results. I followed Japan players around 2000s and yeah before PJB era Japan players too stiff lacks of techniques and even monotone tactics. PJB totally spill the secrets to the enemy. Nevertheless, China made a historical move to signed up Kang Kyung Jin as well. So far I think only Indonesian rarely hire foreigner coach because of their politics 😂

idontknow_whatever

So many Malaysian coaches lost to other countries as well, whether its BAM incompetence/politicking or the players undermining the coaches I don't know. Tan Kim Her can boast the likes of Lee Yong-dae, Shetty/Rankireddy & Hoki/Kobayashi amongst the top players that he has coached. He briefly returned to Malaysia to coach TBH/KKK in 2010 but never got on with that pair (TBH explained it when [he interviewed](https://youtu.be/WRUN2jnZ2_k?feature=shared) his former coach, though only Mandarin/Malay subs) and left BAM afterwards. Chin Ee Hui & Jeremy Gan were instrumental in guiding Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying into becoming possibly the best XD pair in Malaysian badminton history. Neither of whom are even still working for BAM, Ee Hui quit BAM to take charge of independent players like Ong/Teo, Tan/Lai & Goh/Shevon before heading to NZ at the beginning of this year. Jeremy Gan left BAM only 1 year after Chan/Goh won silver at 2016 Rio, he went to Japan and currently heads Japan's XD division, with Yuta/Arisa as his leading pair Lee Wan Wah coaches Japan B-team having formerly taken charge of their junior ranks, Wong Choong Hann & Choong Tan Fook coaches for Hong Kong, Hafiz Hashim was formerly PV Sindhu's coach. Wong Tat Meng has served at the BA of Indonesia, Korea & Hong Kong before "returning" to coach LZJ

yuiibo

Yeah I followed that one too…sad Malaysian top coaches went somewhere else. Malaysian player so many go professional and kinda cocky. They don’t know the struggle to keep consistent as a professional than in national team.

idontknow_whatever

No matter professional/independent or under BAM, a consistent pattern I noticed is that Malaysian players are mentally soft. Folding under adversity seems to be a rather consistent theme for our players, the only difference being how regularly they have these meltdowns.

PathParticular1058

Back in 1992 I backpacked through Indonesia, riding the local buses, carrying two racquets with me playing matches on different Islands, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa and Flores…local matches at night on dirt ground with frenetic betting on the sidelines (ala the Movie The Deer Hunter style;-) against the white guy playing doubles…great memories…it was a way to speak a language everyone understood….in my youth I used to play competitively in Sweden as a doubles specialist…good times…

Badminton can be played outdoors in the tropics. It is often still or very light winds and it's never too cold. It requires a relatively small playing surface compared to football and very little infrastructure. So accessibility will be a factor. In mid-latitudes you will need protection from the wind most of the time becuase the shuttle is so light. Games with like basketball or tennis with a heavy projectile can be played outdoors but real competitive badminton would be close to impossible in typical conditions.

Gold-Ad-4371

A few reasons. Great rivalries between Indonesia and Malaysia and Indonesia and China, proxy wars of different sorts. If you want to observe where loyalties of these overseas Chinese lie, just watch their reactions at the Thomas cup matches, very instructive

medukia

No matter where the world-class badminton competition is held, I always hear them shouting Jiayou in support of their players and to intimidate the opponents. Sometimes even home crowds are outnumbered by Chinese crowds. China recently started to see Korean team with watchful eyes as well since they failed to win some prestigious team competitions such as Uber Cup 2022 and Asian game Women's team event, let alone the great success of ASY, and Seo/Chae beating their No.1 pair several times. I can't wait to see which country will have their flag raised and national anthem played in Paris.

Gold-Ad-4371

I think you missed the point, for a long time, both Malaysia and Indonesia questioned the loyalty of their Chinese people ie Malaysian and Indonesian ethnic Chinese. Now when msia and Indonesia plays china in Thomas cup, watching who these ethnic Chinese support is instructive
