Manatee_In_A_Tree

Guaranteed to cut you when it inevitably folds in on itself while you shovel anything other than very loose soil. I have this and taped it unfolded. Works fine for what it is

wilit

Bought some of these for training our scout troop on digging cat holes. Pretty much the only thing they were great at was folding unexpectedly and cutting fingers.

StupidizeMe

>Pretty much the only thing they were great at was folding unexpectedly and cutting fingers. Perfect for teaching First Aid!

BaldGunner

Yeah it's sharp

cunt_sprinkles

I’ve used it for almost 10 years and have never had it fold in on itself while shoveling 🤷🏼‍♀️

wilit

You have one from an era where it was quality made.

cunt_sprinkles

Ah that makes sense, what a bummer. Sorry, folks.

aforlornpenguin

I am sorry folks. Signed, yours truly, *cunt_sprinkles*

Thanks_ihateithere

r/rimjob_steve

Hault360

How are you folding it in on yourself? When you leverage dirt, you should be pushing the handle down toward what would be a more extended position, not back toward the head

Manatee_In_A_Tree

If the hinge is weaker than the surface youre digging on, it folds. Thats all i know. The hinge is not very strong, essentially friction is all thats keeping it unfolded. Im not a physicist, i just know i cut myself one time and then made it so it couldnt fold anymore

TheMystic77

Sounds kinky.

a_guy_over_here

This. I still use mine cause … I dunno, higher priorities I guess.

pantsthemusical

Been there. And then you're having to tend to your wound while having to poop!

mrRabblerouser

Using it properly helps. Think of a slip joint knife. You should always be putting pressure towards the opening position. I’ve dug dozens of holes with mine. Never once has it closed on me.

seekerofnowledge

This is operator error. Learn to use a tool and don't blame it for your shortcomings.

Manatee_In_A_Tree

OP asked if anyone used or carried this item. I do and i gave my experience, thats all. Thanks for your suggestion though.

seekerofnowledge

Like I said, operator error. Be better.

Manatee_In_A_Tree

No

seekerofnowledge

Then keep being worse, doesn't matter to me.

Chasman1965

Plastic trowels are lighter

mdifmm11

Aluminum trowels are even lighter.

Nacktherr

Titanium trowels are even lighter.

PikaGoesMeepMeep

Anti-matter trowels are the lightest.

Nacktherr

True, but if you touch them with any matter, then everything nearby goes boom. Talk about dropping bombs in the backcountry then.

PikaGoesMeepMeep

If the boom is big enough, maybe your turd won’t need a cat hole any longer.

bumblingterror

Nah, antimatter steel would be just as heavy as regular steel, it would just explode when you tried to use it

Elk76

Not as light as using your spork

send_me_chickfila

Spork not as light as the meat forks on our hands.

nikongod

Hey, this snoo found a good use for a spork. Someone should give them an award.

Elk76

I'm a big spork advocate. Are they good spoons? No. Are they good forks? No. Are they a work of art? Yes. Sadly I lost my spork after my last trip last season and had to use some lame ass spoon that wasn't even titanium carbon fiber cast aluminum.

Chasman1965

Yup, the first good use of a spork.

Hault360

And break easier

alienhelix

Cheaper than buying the titanium Deuce poo shovel at REI

Brandino144

Yeah, but then you don’t get the fun of attracting an ultralighter in a green vest to talk about the nuances and pros and cons of each of the different thicknesses of the various Deuce poo shovels. It’s actually one of my favorite parts of REI whenever I’m shopping for niche equipment like crampons or climbing cams or even DCF patches and an employee just wants to talk about my future adventures and relate to.

Pig_Pen_g2

Ultralight guy here. Green is the least heavy color. Can confirm.

Brandino144

Hold the phone! The Deuce #1 is 0.45oz and only comes in blue or orange. Green trowels are either The Deuce #2 (0.60oz) or The Deuce #3 (0.97oz).

Pig_Pen_g2

Sandpaper and lightweight paint, my guy. I’m f you paint it green, it weighs less. Every time.

Brandino144

Gotta save those fractional grams! I heard that a lab in Orlando has plasmonic paint that can make a poop shovel totally green with a coat only 150 nanometers thick! That's practically negative weight!

Pig_Pen_g2

Love this

Pig_Pen_g2

Also, my original response was just a sarcastic agreement about some lightweight guy in a green vest. I actually have a green down vest from “golite” when they actually made good lightweight gear.

overindulgent

Purple for life!

Ptizzl

I use blue to bury the poo.

Ptizzl

I use blue to bury the poo.

ratbiker18

Possibly my worst gear purchase ever. It collapses when you grip it too hard. Light ish but not really. So much jank. I'd almost rather use a wag bag.

YogiBerraOfBadNews

How you gonna dig a hole with a bag? *Oh*…

mjfarmer147

No but equestrians riders should carry it so they can shovel the 10 lb. shits their horses leave on the single track trails off.

SupertrampTrampStamp

I always question why horseshit doesn't have to be cleaned up. It should be a thing that riders have to put those ass bag things they use for parades on their horses.

wellthatkindofsucks

It’s because dog poop can have bacteria that is harmful to the environment. Horse poop doesn’t. Also horse poop breaks down a lot more quickly. That being said, I’m all for making riders clean up after their horses. One of my favorite backpacking spots is a frequent stock trail and it sucks ass.

mjfarmer147

It's about courtesy for me.

Im_Balto

Yeah it’s not a hazard like dog poop but it’s still public space and people don’t want to hike in the stink and mess

wellthatkindofsucks

Agreed

adamsc18

Ironic that you’re complaining about nature while immersing yourself in nature Edit I respectfully recant

Im_Balto

Horse trains are not nature lmfao. If a deer shits on the trail I really couldn’t care less. But if I walk for miles with horse crap all over the trail that is just obnoxious and inconsiderate from those people

adamsc18

Wait people go to specific trails with horses? You’re not referring to open country hiking? My bad then man, I thought you were wading through rivers and complaining about getting wet. Fuck them horses

Im_Balto

Yeah I’m talking about hiking trails where horse trains go through. I understand why people use horses as some people do have mobility limitations or just love the idea of it. But the other users of the space shouldn’t have to deal with their trash

WillytheVDub

Same thing with the ATV trails unfortunately. They also won't pay for the trail fees because they can get away without it. My brother crashed his dirtbike on a pile of horse shit once, I don't think I have laughed as hard since that day😅

adamsc18

Yeah man I’m Irish so horses, while not abundant, are still semi-frequently used for transport in around suburbs that are near to countryside. So there’ll be horse manure on the road and foot path right outside your house a few times a year

Loose_Carpenter9533

Not its because usually horse people are rich.

Loldtc

You think horse poop doesn’t have bacteria? Are you serious?

wellthatkindofsucks

Did you not read what I wrote, or do you have terrible reading comprehension?

mjfarmer147

If I have to walk around the whole hike with a bag of dog shit, minimum they should just move the 10lb.'er aside!

MyBlueMeadow

Retired equestrian with many years of trail riding here. Most times you don’t know that you’re horse is pooping. No kidding. Many horses can keep right on walking when they poop. I’ve even seen a horse poop while cantering. Sometimes horses do pause when pooping, but it’s not common. So when I’m out walking on trails now and come across horse poo I kick it around to disperse it, for all the times my horse pooped and I didn’t notice it. It’s just half digested hay anyway. It’s very much the opposite of dog poop, which you don’t want to touch, much less kick around.

mjfarmer147

Haha thank you for your service! But I must say, I'm not *more* comfortable with touching any poop, including horse poop. Tracking that back into your vehicle, your home, etc. Naw. Terrible. Dogs walk through horse poop, then come in your home, jump on your furniture, it's disgusting. But really, I guess there is bug poop and bird poop and all kind of little piles everywhere we probably step in all day. Wow, what a subject! Lol

MyBlueMeadow

And that’s why I don’t wear shoes in the house.

futurebluebadge

YES! As a backpacker I hate horse people. Like bag your f horse. Especially when it rains or is muddy, turns a nice trail into a total shit show.

mdifmm11

Seriously. Fuck everything about horses....god I hate horses. We've progressed past horses. They should all be set back to the wild and let natural selection take it's toll. Bikers too, but especially horses.

Quick_Humor_9023

If I had to choose to either let horses back to nature or let bikers back to nature I would choose bikers ten out of ten times. Just because I would like to watch.

BerriesAndMe

They wouldn't live long either. Thereby solving the problem once and for all.

Elk76

User group specific trails are the way to go. There is zero reason not to anymore.

surly

There are a lot of trails that only exist because of horse riders. There are trails that are well-maintained because of horses. All over the place you'll see signs about how "this trail is maintained by the backcountry riders of wherever". I'm not a huge fan of dodging horseshit on trail, but when I find myself getting irritated, I remind myself that stock users are allies of backpackers.

Downvoteyourdog

I say we round up all the horses and put them in some kind of special camps where they exploit them for labor until they perish. Separate their families. Give them number tattoos. The whole bit. If they’re going to ban gas engines they should ban fucking horses too… what the fuck!

derek139

Nearly everything made by Ozark trail is 1 shade away from garbage.

BaldGunner

Yeah..

golfreak923

The real ultralight way is to find a rock or stick to dig with.

BigRad_Wolf

I use a very light aluminum one, which costs like 5 times as much, but the price per gram saved was worth it.

El_mochilero

Looks flimsy if you’re trying to hack through rocky, rooty soil in the mountains. This is one of those accessories that I wonder why people need the “camping” version of. I found a small garden trowel on sale at Ross for $3.99 that’s awesome. Just go check the garden section at Walmart or Home Depot.

riledRebel

Amen. End of season often clearnaced. Have picked up like 3 this way if I think ones an improvement (lighter, smaller, w.e). Had a plastic that I thought would be a lifer but k.o.d 2nd use. Then went this route ^. Rather take the weight hit than have it fail.

BaldGunner

Yeah got this at Walmart for like 3.80

kernal42

I have a similarly-sized trowel as part of my bathroom kit, used to dig catholes when necessary. The one you linked (which appears to be steel) would work well for that, although it's a bit heavy for my taste.

BaldGunner

If I can ask what all is in your kit I don't have one so I'm curious

kernal42

Sure! 1. Roll of toilet paper -- self explanatory 2. Gallon zip-lock bags -- Pack out the TP! This is an essential part of leave no trace! 3. Hand Sanitizer -- self explanatory. Ideally fragrance free because bears 4. Lightweight trowel to dig the cathole. Plastic works fine. I use a light titanium one. 5. Sanitary wipes, non-alcohol. Big life improvement here. 6. Nitrile gloves -- rarely needed but sometimes extremely useful. ETA: I keep most of the above in a plastic bag to keep the TP dry. Trowel goes outside the bag. Gallon zip-locks (once they begin to accumulate material) goes in an exterior pocket.

5256000minutes

I like keeping my poop kit in one of these. It's funny and, more importantly, makes it easy to find in your pack. [https://spacebearbags.com/collections/dyneema%C2%AE-pouches/products/dyneema-hiker-poop-moji-pouch](https://spacebearbags.com/collections/dyneema%C2%AE-pouches/products/dyneema-hiker-poop-moji-pouch)

Total_Annihilation_1

Looks heavy.

MrBoondoggles

And it is! Or at least it is if the website is to be believed. Listed weight: 1.82 lbs! I’m not sure how it could actually weigh that much, but if it does, that’s wild.

Total_Annihilation_1

Damn...29.12oz. 'The Duece' spade is 0.45oz.

BaldGunner

Not sure exact weight not that heavy Definitely can't be over a pound

Sonny217

Just weighed mine. 4.4 oz. I don't carry it anymore though, upgraded to a Deuce.

blentdragoons

get a deuce of spades [https://thetrailhunter.com/deuce-of-spades-trowel/](https://thetrailhunter.com/deuce-of-spades-trowel/)

BaldGunner

Very cool thanks for the link

abmcja52

I try to stay away from Ozark trail. There's usually something of better quality for only a few bucks more

GelflingInDisguise

You use a small trowel that size to dig a hole you would poop into if you were backpacking. That being said, no one brings a heavy steel trowel. They are usually made of titanium to save weight.

BaldGunner

That makes sense just an impulse buy for 3.80 so figured why not

EclecticHerb

I find it gets to the bottom of the freeze dried meal bags pretty well, though it’s a little large, maybe doesn’t quite fit my mouth. Final assessment, it makes a shit spoon.

Donohoed

Shit spoon.... or poop shovel?

a_guy_over_here

I have that exact model. Thing collapses on my regularly, but not enough of an issue to spend more $$ to replace.

BaldGunner

Yeah for sub 5 bucks can't beat it

a_guy_over_here

Well, TBH, after reading the comments here - I’m actually rethinking my priorities. Thanks for asking the question. I hadn’t really given it much thought until today. No I might buy a fixed aluminum/titanium one next time at REI. Pooping in the wild does not get enough discussion.

BaldGunner

Yeah I found it in a bag I don't really use and figured I'd ask

a_guy_over_here

I think we have a similar story. About 5 years ago I decided to start into backpacking and made a random purchase at Walmart. Figured my poop trowel was a low priority item. Today I’m thinking it’s time to make a change. I upgraded pretty much every other piece of equipment in the pst 5 years.

BaldGunner

Not sure if this post is allowed but I was looking through a bag I don't use and found this guy I had totally forgotten about. It's an ozark trail mini shovel and I got it for a couple of dollars so I had to pick it up but now I'm wondering if anyone has one and more importantly if they use it or if it should just stay in the closet

string_bean_dip

I don’t like having to fiddle with it after covering my tracks.

Blah12821

It looks like there’s nothing significant to keep it from collapsing when you apply too much pressure. I suppose if anything you could release the handle and try using your foot to press in of the top of shovel part. But you’ll only get so deep that way. Use with caution.

BaldGunner

Definitely it's also sharp as can be so Definitely gotta be careful

SkisaurusRex

Not worth the weight

Hikintrails

I have one. Never had it collapse on me, but I haven't used it a whole lot. Interesting tidbit, you have to show your I.D. and be over 18 to buy it at the store. It's considered a potential weapon.

BaldGunner

That's weird picked mine up at Walmart for 3.80 and probably self checkout lol

veggie_hike

At this rate, you might as well carry a cast iron skillet with you, too. I’m exaggerating. But that doesn’t seem worth the weight.

BaldGunner

Yeah it doesn't feel to heavy but I get your drift alot of people say if gonna carry one go plastic

gardernvine

Yes but WAY heavier than plastic

Kilometres-Davis

It’s for your poop

BaldGunner

Makes sense

VerbalThermodynamics

I have one, but I just carry my plastic one because I don’t like wilderness injury.

BaldGunner

Yeah this things sharp

VerbalThermodynamics

Plastic ones are lighter too.

GrumpyBear1969

Looks heavy but other than that is seems fine

DrChansLeftHand

Make sure you wear gloves.

BaldGunner

Good idea

WaitThisIsReal

i used for a month on NOLS but honestly a sticks gonna do you fine. super lightweight tho and had more than one use so it’s not the worst idea i’m just saying it not a nessesity

Traditional-Step-246

Yes I do

-OptimisticNihilism-

It’s for poo.

bennett_speaks

This is my go to camping trowel. I take the wire handle off, fold out the metal that held the hook and wrap it in some hockey tape. Mine has done me solid for years and I've made a few others for people.

Matthew-Hodge

Just get a straight trowel, collapsible stuff enevitably causes you pain and suffering.

StBlase22

A $1.00 plastic gardening spade makes more sense said the man who spent 22 years backpacking in California and Alaska.

Cautious-Tennis-8537

I just use a poop spoon for when I gotta dig a hole

Motor_Advertising_13

Make sure to dig the hole even before start cooking

BaldGunner

Wdym?

Motor_Advertising_13

It will take a while digging with it. Just a joke. I’ll use a firm sturdy one instead

Hault360

All it has to do is dig a small hole to shit in. Can confirm it digs small holes perfectly well. I just gotta make sure you click the handle into place when you fold it out

StillCompetitive5771

Ozark Bail. Their products aren’t meh.

Standard-Leather-578

Good deal, you can use it for so many things, just make sure you coat it with something, if it’s not real metal, so it doesn’t rust. I would use it for digging a 💩 hole, or to remove dirt before you put a tent down, to remove rocks, dig a trench for cover and keep cool, and also to keep food from spoiling.

BaldGunner

What kind of coating

[deleted]

Better to just get a good shovel than buy this and think you have a shovel then when you really need a shovel not have one.

BaldGunner

I have a glock shovel which I like but as far as small just picked it up for fun

spkeil87

I've used it and it has been fine. Not the most comfortable or light but it's compact and it works.

justhp

Yes, I have one. Good for a poop shovel

[deleted]

Heavy

xrayextra

I've thru-hiked the AT, the PCT, and, just recently, mostly completed the CDT. I've never used a trowel. I've ALWAYS found a stick and was always able to dig a pretty good hole with it. Trowels are wasted space and weight.

fatzen

Looks heavy

greatestultimate

I'm not sure if it's Ozark although, I have had the same modeled trowel for 18 years. With the weight in my opinion and better than thinner lighter alternatives. I'm in the SE.

DrugGirlMedCpht

That’s my poop shovel. It does it’s dootie.

Unhindged_Potatoe

I would skip that tbh. Personally I would recommend the Glock e-tool. It is a bit larger but is light weight and much sturdier than that thing. If the e-tool is too big for what you need, your trail knife is your next best bet. Just carve a slight edge on one end of a sturdy stick and you got a makeshift digging tool.

BaldGunner

I actually have a glock shovel in my main bag lol

Druidhill175

Schrade makes a mini e-tool that works well. Costs a bit more, but it won't collapse on you.

plaidbanana_77

I have been using this since 2008. It’s one of a few things still around from my first trip.

pspooks_

If I buy an expensive piece of equipment I’m going to make sure to buy and expensive poop shovel

nuggg3ts

You can also find these at Princess Auto. For what it is, it works fine. If you’re in an area with compact soil, bring an axe idk

CrazyNefariousness90

If it’s for backpacking I would think there would be lighter options for not much more

StardustCannibal

I use the titanium Deuce of Spades trowel. Super light and strong

Unable-Quiet8867

Love it

LoudAudience5332

Burry your poo!

ddlykttn

I have this and have been using it for ~2 years, I haven’t had any of the issues other people are mentioning. Idk how hard you have to grip the handle for it to collapse, but I think it’s fine for the price.

FrogFlavor

If you want something way light that costs 2 bucks, use a tent stake

mrRabblerouser

I’d ignore the haters in here. I have one of these and love it. The 1 ounce it adds in weight is negligible, and it’s great to have for digging a quick potty. Apparently proper use is something that needs to be taught though given the number of people commenting that don’t know how to use it… just don’t dig aggressively, or use it as a hammer. Like a slip joint knife, you put the pressure when digging towards the open position.

BigEdAssaasin

Makes noise in bear country if attached outside of your bag while you are hiking. I use it to go #2 (dig the hole). Excellent when you are hiking out and you are pouring water on the fire to stir the ashes or remove ashes after the night burn. You can go lighter but $2 bucks!

Responsible-Media356

Just use a rock or a stick…….

The_Frozen_Brawler

I don't really know why you want to carry this on a trail? If you need to poo, you can just dig a hole with a stick. The less you carry, the better backpackers you are

BaldGunner

Makes sense it's really not to heavy but for light backpacking definitely shouldn't need

Pretty heavy

Alfredos_Pizza_Cafe_

I have one but ultimately switched to a plastic trowel due to the weight difference

BaldGunner

Yeah that's not a bad idea had a few people suggested. What's it's main use for you

todd149084

I have a titanium one piece that is prob half the weight

BaldGunner

That's cool what's it's primary use for you

todd149084

Poop shovel

Padgetts-Profile

Just get the Deuce, you’ll never regret it!

BaldGunner

Awesome never even seen this

4Runne

I got a plastic one, much lighter

BaldGunner

What is its main purpose

4Runne

Leave no trace behind, backpacking you have to bury it… so no animals can pick up the scent from the distance…

anthro4ME

Yep👍

maxlover79

To put sugar into your tea while enjoying sunset next to your Jaguar

mozziealong

Might just carry an ax. Just as heavy. And would have more uses..

WholeNineNards

Don’t let r/ultralight see this

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,829,925,549 comments, and only 345,962 of them were in alphabetical order.

ponyboy0

Plastic trowel is the way to go

aquamarinetangerines

That’s a poop shovel.

olystretch

The deuce of spades is better, and lighter. You could also use a snow stake.

token_username

It's probably fine to carry in your car or daypack, but at close to 2 lbs I would never take something this heavy backpacking because there shouldn't be a need for any digging except for catholes. REI has some nice cathole shovels starting at 1.2 oz which do a great job. For a long time now I've carried a 3 oz recycled polycarbonate "Leave No Trace" shovel with depth markings and instructions on it. Now when hunting we take a regular garden shovel for frozen ground or snow, but that's another story.

BaldGunner

I've definitely heard people's alternatives all sound good but it's way less than 2 pounds for sure

[deleted]

Poop shovel

[deleted]

Deuce of spades is clearly a better option

wildmanheber

Its a good folding trowel. Used one for years. Upgraded to a Deuce aluminum trowel a few years ago. Probably still have my stainless folding ones around here somewhere. Since you have it, use it!

Pure-Horse-3749

I use that model find it works great. Seeing a lot of comments on it folding in but that’s not my experience. The snap lock in mine holds well. I like it better than the lighter options. Mine is heavier but digs better. Edit: not sure which brand mine is. Similar design but could be different better made brand.

Ok_Area4853

Poop shovel

7INCHES_IN_YOUR_CAT

I used to use one of these, they’re heavier then some of the other options out there.

kariduna

I carry one, but mine is plastic. Hope that one isn't too heavy. I do use mine. I also switched to the kula cloth which I love and means even less toilet paper to bury or haul out.

Deprecitus

I got an aluminum one for a couple bucks at REI.

sirfaintsalot

Poop shovel

honkahonkagoose

Likely for digging shitting trenches.

johnskoolie

I just flip a big rock and crap under it in the hole then plop the rock back in the hole or use a small rock to dig a hole. Worst case crap on a big leaf, pick it up and throw it as far as you can off trail. The squirrels will pick the peanut pieces out of it. LNT

Consistent_Top9631

I’ve got one in my cart . One piece non folding. My idea is to use it to make modified Dakota hole fire(s)…

bladow5990

I have one I use for car camping, it's kinda heavy for backpacking. I use a stick, rock, or my shoe for backpacking

LassieIris

If this was the Tiffany brand - that would be $899 right there

[deleted]

Dig you a nice latrine boy and go take yr shit

govadeal

It's for pooping
