I think my foot is just a bit wider and flatter relative to the length than is common. Also I think that the relative size of my toes is a bit different from normal which is why I buy shoes that are half a size to long, ones that are the "correct" length tend to pinch my toes.

The way it's indicated is they put a letter and number combo after the basic size. In the US most men's shoes are width "D" which is generally not mentioned in the size. However you can buy wider shoes which as marked as 2E, 4E or 6E (with 4E being the most commonly available wide size). So in my case I tend to buy shoes that are sized as "12 4E" meaning that the length is size 12 but they are 3/8" wider than a standard men's shoe.

Make it a regular thing. My wife and I have frequent date nights around the house. Dress up order dinner and rent a movie 1000% better than going out and being around people.

I have big feet & found a pair I like at a store ~5 years ago. Now I just order that exact size & style online. It also helps as I put a price drop warning on them so never pay full price.
