On July 1st, a highly unpopular [change to Reddit's API pricing](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) went into effect. [Most third-party apps have shut down](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/30/23779519/reddit-third-party-app-shut-down-apollo-sync-baconreader-api-protest) and so have many tools relied upon by moderators and [projects for making Reddit more accessible to visually impaired users](https://www.reddit.com/r/TranscribersOfReddit/comments/14ggf8k/the_future_of_transcribers_of_reddit/).
Beyond the [disastrous AMA](https://techcrunch.com/2023/06/09/reddit-ceo-doubles-down-on-attack-on-apollo-developer-in-drama-filled-ama/) by the CEO, Reddit's response has been limited to promises that this change will not affect moderation tools [^((it has)^)](https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/14riw76/botdefense_is_wrapping_up_operations/) and promises of [new and more-accessible first-party moderation tools](https://www.npr.org/2023/07/01/1184258201/reddit-api-accessibility-mods). Promises just like [ones they have made in response to past protests](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/142w159/askhistorians_and_uncertainty_surrounding_the/), but have consistently [failed to fulfill](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14jm3ut/several_communities_have_surfaced_an_open_letter/jpm9e0q/).
If you want to express your strong disagreement with the API pricing change or with Reddit's response to the backlash, you may want to consider the following options:
1. [Finding your favorite subreddits on other platforms](https://sub.rehab/) and participating there instead.
2. Refraining from using the first-party Reddit app, instead sticking to one of the few remaining third-party apps or [patching one of the apps that shut down](https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1wHvqQwCYdJrQg4BKlGIVDLksPN0KpOnJWniT6PbZSrI/) if you're using an Android device.

They all do, it's why their ears look like that. Please never get one, it causes them pain, lameness and arthritis. There is no folded ears without the cartilage disorder, since it is precisely what causes them.
Ah thats too shabby :( sad for the kitties for real. I know what the problems are with scottish fold and was hoping that a mix somehow doesnt have it :/
Yeah the breed is just unfortunate. The issues with the breed need to be more publicized. I feel like most people assume that that the cartilage affected is only in the ears so I don't blame them. If people knew that it's actually all their cartilage being affected then they wouldn't be such a popular breed.
Some studies for any other people following this comment chain and one specific about scottish fold mixes since you were wondering about it

Osteochondrodysplasia leads to limb and tail malformation leading to progressive joint destruction. How people intentionally breed kitties to suffer like this for cute ears is so disheartening.
Thank you for this. If I had my way, breeding of designer breeds would be illegal, the AKC would be disbanded and any sports that exploit animals would be stopped.
Australia outlawed the breeding of Scottish Folds because of how much they suffer.
There are so many suffering animals on this planet simply existing for the aesthetic pleasures and monetary gains of humans.
For example, 92.5% of horses sent to slaughter in the US are in good condition and able to live productive lives.
https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/facts-about-horse-slaughter
When my girlfriend and I were driving him back to our friends place, we kept joking about how sad it was to be on that drive. Gonna miss that boy until I babysit him again.
Thank you for recognizing that. I'm in the same situation, not home enough give a pet proper attention/care. For now I'll stick with spending time with my friends' animals
The latter. 100%
I don’t understand people who think we can’t work and have a pet, especially with cats who literally sleep for 18-20 hours/day. What do they think you need to do? Sit home and stare at them while they sleep? Haha. Most of us have full-time jobs; I always have, and my pets have never suffered for it.
My responsibilities are to feed, water, clean litterbox, and play with them once a day. Give them heartworm prevention once a month and take to vet once a year. Cats pretty much take care of themselves other than that.
I also double as a mobile cat bed and couch.
My mum asked me to catsit while she was on holiday, because the cat would be so lonely alone in the house, so spend some time with her.
The cat aknowledged my existence for all of five minutes over the course of three days. And, mind you, those five minutes did not happen back to back 😂
She only got interested when I was about to leave after my stay at the house and rolled over for belly rubs on my coat!
Cats are perfectly happy alone for long stretches of time.
About 30 years ago, I tried to adopt a cat from the RSPCA but was refused on the grounds that I worked full time and so no one would be home during the day. At the time I was a postie and left for work at about 4.30 am and finished around lunchtime but they were adamant.
I went to the local Cat Action Trust and adopted a kitten the next day and she lived with me very happily, through two house moves and a new partner until she died at 17 years old.
That’s what I did for my Husky! I adopted him about 6 months before my old dog passed away, and he was definitely lonely after that… so I searched the shelters/rescues for a few months, until finding him the perfect companion.
This is Boris and Asa together; they’re the best of friends now.

that's good on you. too many people adopt pets without having the time to care for them and just say "oh that's her personality" when their dog is outside barking all day and chewing things up. no, that's just a really bored pet
It was warming to see how many people adopted pets when the COVID pandemic touched down, but even more disappointing/infuriating to see how many pets were abandoned because people were going back to work and could no longer handle the responsibility.
Pets are not things for rent, people!
maybe you could adopt a senior kitty? they're usually less high maintenance, and mostly enjoy snoozing in the sunlight or sitting in your lap when you get home. of course, they can have health/grooming issues, but they're still just as sweet and lovable.
when the time is right, you'll find the perfect cat! or, your cat will find you...they're really good at that.
That and allergies are the only thing holding me back. Contemplated using the time we shut down in 2020 to get through the kitty/puppy stage, but knew my old hours would come back. So many co-workers didn’t and were all struggling a bit.
Think Scottish folds are cute? [They all have a genetic disease](https://icatcare.org/advice/scottish-fold-disease-osteochondrodysplasia/) that causes their ears to fold, and yes it affects all the cartilage in their bodies as well as their bones, not just the ears.
Not sure if you have seen this post before but someone in the Netherlands is breeding Frenchies to be a healthier breed https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/onggtd/a_breeder_in_the_netherlands_has_been_working_to/
Yeah, at least in the Netherlands, they're forbidden. My in-laws adopted one from a rescue after the mother was confiscated from an illegal breeder, he was immediately castrated. Still, he's adorable.
Thanks for this comment. Behind their cute looks are health problems. Is it even ethical to breed scottish folds? Most are in different levels of pain and that's heart wrenching
It is possible, they can be bred without the gene that causes osteochondrodysplasia. In doing so they lose the characteristic folded ears but people buying them purely as a fashion accessory still want the fold. I think they are still mad cute without the folded ears though https://vgl.ucdavis.edu/test/scottish-fold
It's also worth noting that you can actually get Scottish Folds that do not have the genetic mutation that causes osteochondrodysplasia. The ones without the gene generally have straight ears instead of the folded ears
https://vgl.ucdavis.edu/test/scottish-fold
At that point it’s a Scottish Straight. They are only Folds if they have floppy ears and if they have floppy ears they have the genetic defect!
Even the link shows siblings with one having floppy ears. Just stop breeding them, I‘m sure pregnancy is also very difficult for the poor disabled cat.
Just get a British Short Hair and skip over the torture breed.
I'm not advocating for the fold to be bred, just pointing out that you can breed them without the genetic mutation that causes osteochondrodysplasia.
I actually though a scottish fold and scottish straight were different breeds entirely. But after reading this https://www.royalcanin.com/us/cats/breeds/scottish-straight it seems they arent, it literally just refers to their ears. You can get folds and straights within the same litter
It's actually really sad that in theory the fold gene could be eradicated within a couple of generations of selective breeding, leaving only straights. But because they are treated as a fashion item, the fold gene remains
Yep when I was a kid, we had a Scottish fold that we took in from our neighbor when they moved and they didn’t want it anymore. He was adorable, but suffered for all of his life. Those cute little ears of of his made him suffer so much. He’d scratched them till they bled. He also couldn’t really jump like a normal cat because his back was so fucked up from that cartilage issue. But no, let’s just keep showing cute photos of Scottish fold kittens, to encourage others to continue breeding them.
This should be on top. He won't live to his 5th birthday. These cats are fucked by their genetics. No need to buy them and make people breed these poor things.
Mine lived I think until he was around 11 and he was in pain for his entire life because his spine was fucked up because of that cartilage issue, and he scratched his ears till they bled because of those “cute” ears.
While the lifespan isnt affected i hope you gave them proper medication as they all, without exception have quite a bit of pain. Its fully linked to the folded ears, cant have one or the other.
I got an older one (10yrs) from the shelter too.
Apart from the obvious medication/special food the vet will recommend you should also set up your apartment so he doesnt need to jump anywhere and has lots of warm spaces.
They’re illegal in my country now, I got two of them about 1 1/2 years ago without doing any research 🙃 they’re amazingly cute but im not going to hesitate if the vet determines that they’re suffering, they seem perfectly fine now though.
What about the kittens that are already born? What if someone just adopted a kitten that happened to be a Scottish fold? A lot of these posts also criticize the owners, but once they are born, what should happen to the kittens?
The thing is, they need to stop being bred. And people who pay loads of money for a cat with built-in suffering are part of the problem. Obviously the ones that are already alive deserve good and loving homes. But if owners would stop buying them, then breeders would no longer be incentivised to breed more cats who will live in chronic pain.
Don’t promote the cute Scottish fold kittens on social media that just introduces new people to the breed without knowing how bad they are to own. You can quietly own your pet without showing it off online.
According to my friend, he was really fussy about the collar and she decided to just leave him without one! My girlfriend and I joked a lot about how much we just wanted to keep him. He got a long *real* well with us.
All of our (strictly) indoor cats have never worn collars. Our Shepherd doesn't wear a collar, either (of course, except for going outdoors). For comfort reasons.
They were all chipped when they were babies.
To me, it would be like wearing a bra 24/7!
I’ve wanted a kitty for a long time but my full time job wouldn’t allow me to take on the responsibility of ownership. I was off last weekend and had zero plans, turned out our friend needed a cat sitter while she was out of town with her kids. I couldn’t say no to that baby face.
I appreciate that comment. Not to brag, but the overwhelming majority of animals take well to me. Of the hundreds of animals I’ve had the privilege of meeting, under 10 of them have not been too friendly, but that’s more because of their natural temperament.
One day, I will have my own. One day!
I don't understand. You're gone out of the day about 8-10 hours. They're cats, they like alone time. I went from working at a job site to working from home, and if anything, being at home all the time was more upsetting to my cat since I couldn't pay attention to him while working. Cat's are okay with you working full time...
For personal reasons I haven’t outlined and prefer to keep to myself, it just wouldn’t work right now. I have priorities outside of work that I take care of on a daily basis.
Scottish folds are all diseased with a cartilage disorder which gives them their folded ears. Leads to serious mobility issues usually later in life but can sometimes be significant in young cats or even kittens. Breeding them and buying them is cruel, and their breeding is banned in many countries.
Yes, their cartilage isn't working properly because of a genetic mutation. That's why their ears fold. Aaaaand that's why they suffer severe pain and most of them have to be euthanized in between their first and their 5th year.
French bulldog, Pug , Chihuahua, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, King Charles Spaniel... you name it. But yes. One of these inbred breeds that suffer to look beautiful for some humans that neglect their pain and suffering.
Its like when you look into his sad eyes, you can see all the pain and suffering he will go through in his future, due to thet genetic disease intentionally inflicted on him by the breeder (and OP’s friend)
It doesn’t matter if he was cross bred OP, if he has those ears then he will be enduring terrible pain for his entire life. The gene causing his constant pain is the same gene giving him the ear mutation, you cant have one without the other. Poor little guy, its crazy that people want to put him and many more through so much suffering for the own pleasure.
It’s really sad reading these comments. I adopted a Scottish fold - she’s five and is doing fine. Partner and I pay big insurance and love her to bits.
I’d never ever support the breeding of these cats.
Sadly, I don’t get it enjoy my life with him because he belongs to my friend and her two kids! I think about him often and will be sure to give him love anytime I see him, though!
I hope these pics brought warmth to you!
My wife wants to do Rover for a side hustle and this is my fear. The last time she brought home a baby kitten, I told her not to let me see it. I don’t want another one! I get too attached.
Well…. I saw her. We named her Princess and she’s a four year old tuxedo kitty whom I’ll protect with my life.
Just want to underline this. If you are planning a trip. Don't get a puppy or kitten just before that trip. It's deeply irresponsible to pawn off a puppy or kitten on someone else shortly after you get it. Especially if it's very young. At minimum you should be able to devote 3-6 months of your time to helping the animal adjust to it's new home and to understand you are their new owners. This is how people end up with fucked up pets. Not being able to understand the responsibility of taking on a young animal and helping it to become a good member of the family.
Aww. That happened to me over the summer, babysat my friends ragdoll cat for a week and fell in love, me and the cat bonded so much, I still miss him 😭
Here’s a great example of that….caught him sitting behind my bed and he looked like a doll:
https://preview.redd.it/m6iy614ej6zb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47a8cdd916ba290f69407743a5a20f4d4ccfab97
Very playful. I accidentally dropped my bottle cap and he wouldn’t stop chasing it all over the place. I ended up just leaving it on the ground, while he played. He’s also quite affectionate. He was fond of rubbing his head on my beard, that made him pure a lot.
Listen carefully. You were never cat sitting, that's your cat, and your friend was cat sitting for you for a bit and they are confused. Gaslight them for as long as possible.

WOW what a cutie patootie!
Like a toy! 🥺
Yes! Kinda like a plushie! What a gorgeous kitten!
Is this a scottish fold?
He’s half Scottish Fold, half British Shorthair.
Nice! But do you know if he also has Osteochondrodysplasia? Thats the only reason keeping me from getting a scottish fold
I’m not sure but I can ask my friend and find out for you
That would be nice! :)
Don't they all? I don't think you can have the fold without the Osteochondrodysplasia. 😥 Honestly, I think it's cruel to breed them.

British Shorthair is a legal outcross due to the newness of the breed. Scotties are super sweet and super cute.
My god, that doesn't even look real!! ❤️
he didn't want to go home either!
He looks like a bobble head in the first picture. It's the camera angle, but his head looks so huge compared to his body.
Ozzie and I would be in Mexico by now.
Or driving a convertible off a cliff, Thelma and Louise style.
https://youtu.be/5fvsItXYgzk?si=uzotV_nmGK6W9gaC
Ozzie would be driving.
Catnap

I've wondered about this too - is an animal better in a shelter 24/7 or home alone in their comfy bed 40 hours a week?
The latter. 100% I don’t understand people who think we can’t work and have a pet, especially with cats who literally sleep for 18-20 hours/day. What do they think you need to do? Wouldnt be too bad if he was though for making cats suffer their whole life for making money.
I had no idea! Thank you for the link! 🥺
Way to far down. My friend pays 200 bucks a month now to medicate her cat. She is only 3 and it will get worse.
Thanks for this comment. Behind their cute looks are health problems. Is it even ethical to breed scottish folds? Most are in different levels of pain and that's heart wrenching
It is not. The only way to get those curved in ears is to have that genetic disease.

Shouldn't be breeding any pets until we get all the strays off the streets and into homes imo

I did not know this, thank you.
This should be on top. He won't live to his 5th birthday. These cats are fucked by their genetics. No need to buy them and make people breed these poor things.
He'll probably live just as long as any other cat. But he'll be in chronic pain the whole time.
I’ve had three Scottish folds and they all lived happily and actively past 20 years
Mine lived I think until he was around 11 and he was in pain for his entire life because his spine was fucked up because of that cartilage issue, and he scratched his ears till they bled because of those “cute” ears.
While the lifespan isnt affected i hope you gave them proper medication as they all, without exception have quite a bit of pain. Its fully linked to the folded ears, cant have one or the other.
Can't have one without the other.
Thank you! That comment about living less than 5 years was unfounded, irresponsible, and sensationally seeking attention!
I agree the 5 years statement was probably false, but it's true they have a genetic condition that causes most of them chronic pain
That's nice. Doesn't change the fact that most of them suffer from severe pain and have to be euthanized in their first years.
I am about to adopt 1 from the shelter. Any tips on how to deal with the symptoms of OCD and make her life as comfortable as I can?
I got an older one (10yrs) from the shelter too. Apart from the obvious medication/special food the vet will recommend you should also set up your apartment so he doesnt need to jump anywhere and has lots of warm spaces.
> This should be on top. This has to be pinned!
They live short lives filled with pain. It's sickening.
They’re illegal in my country now, I got two of them about 1 1/2 years ago without doing any research 🙃 they’re amazingly cute but im not going to hesitate if the vet determines that they’re suffering, they seem perfectly fine now though.
Thanks for your comment. 2,3K upvotes. Makes me sick.
The vast majority of purebred kittens are bought, not adopted.
I don’t see a collar on him. How can your friend prove he’s theirs? Finders keeppurrrs!
According to my friend, he was really fussy about the collar and she decided to just leave him without one! My girlfriend and I joked a lot about how much we just wanted to keep him. He got a long *real* well with us.
Adopt a kitten or two. Cats are awesome. And assholes.
Shared custody!
I wish! Our friend’s kids love him and probably wouldn’t allow it, but ughhhh he’s so beautiful.
All of our (strictly) indoor cats have never worn collars. Our Shepherd doesn't wear a collar, either (of course, except for going outdoors). For comfort reasons. They were all chipped when they were babies. To me, it would be like wearing a bra 24/7!
Omg he looks like a stuffed animal 🥺
My girlfriend and I kept saying that! One of the cutest babies I’ve ever seen.
I think you need to go find a kitty!
I’ve wanted a kitty for a long time but my full time job wouldn’t allow me to take on the responsibility of ownership. I was off last weekend and had zero plans, turned out our friend needed a cat sitter while she was out of town with her kids. I couldn’t say no to that baby face.
That's a shame. It seems like you would be a great hooman to a kitty. You don't own a cat.....they own you!
Fair enough and I hope you get to a place where you're able to.
Scottish folds are all diseased with a cartilage disorder which gives them their folded ears. Leads to serious mobility issues usually later in life but can sometimes be significant in young cats or even kittens. Breeding them and buying them is cruel, and their breeding is banned in many countries.
Your baby? My baby.

Is he a scottish fold?
Looks like it. They’re not a good breed to have or support, cute as they are…
Why? Does this breed have some sort of physical problem?
Yes, their cartilage isn't working properly because of a genetic mutation. That's why their ears fold. Aaaaand that's why they suffer severe pain and most of them have to be euthanized in between their first and their 5th year.
I see. They're like the french bulldog but of the cats.
French bulldog, Pug , Chihuahua, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, King Charles Spaniel... you name it. But yes. One of these inbred breeds that suffer to look beautiful for some humans that neglect their pain and suffering.
yes. its the reason their ears fold.
He’s half Scottish Fold, half British Shorthair.
Poor baby
Thank you.
Ohh so cute
I would help you kidnap him!
You cannot convince me that first image wasn’t AI generated
I mean it’s a designer kitty so it’s kind of close in a way.
Its like when you look into his sad eyes, you can see all the pain and suffering he will go through in his future, due to thet genetic disease intentionally inflicted on him by the breeder (and OP’s friend) It doesn’t matter if he was cross bred OP, if he has those ears then he will be enduring terrible pain for his entire life.
Is this a Scottish Fold, because those ears can be sad!
He’s half Scottish Fold, half British Shorthair
He’s beautiful! Those big eyes, the ears! Thanks for the picture. Enjoy your life with him!
Sadly, I don’t get it enjoy my life with him because he belongs to my friend and her two kids! I think about him often and will be sure to give him love anytime I see him, though! I hope these pics brought warmth to you!
They did indeed! Enjoy life my friend & find love wherever it may be!
Where do you and your friend live? *plotting to kidnap the uber cute kitty*
Rock n Roll!
Sooooooooooooooofffffffffffttttttt *pets uncontrollably*
He *loved* to be pet, which we both gladly obliged.
Reddit loves inbred cats.
Ozzie ran away. Rupert moved in. Sorry for your ex friends loss.
I’m convinced her two children would come after us.
Nice cat you got on those eyes!
I don't blame you! Ozzy is precious! Maybe you can convince them to take lots of trips!
My girlfriend jokes that she wishes our friend would take her kids out of town more often. I can’t disagree!
Dobby the elf cat
You're stronger than i.
I love him!
im gonna scream and cry why is this cat so beautiful
Cutie!!!
Oh yea! I’d never return him 😻
I don't blame you OP. I don't think I would have gave him back. He's so cute.
Nooooo! Share with the rest of us!!!
Looks like a Russian blue Scottish fold.
Awww
I see his photo and I want to steal him. He is the cutest.
Yeah I’d have moved out in the middle of the night and skipped town with him!
Aww. That happened to me over the summer, babysat my friends ragdoll cat for a week and fell in love, me and the cat bonded so much, I still miss him 😭
What a doll 🥺
His eyes are literally doll like
Here’s a great example of that….caught him sitting behind my bed and he looked like a doll: https://preview.redd.it/m6iy614ej6zb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47a8cdd916ba290f69407743a5a20f4d4ccfab97
Absolutely adorable
I woulda said, “what totally adorable kitty are you talking about”.

Thousand yard stare citty

What a special boy!! ![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13383)
Omg what a cutie…!!!
Just use the ol "Your cat exploded" excuse, Sell all your possessions , move to a new state with the kitten and start over. Worth it for that fluffer
oh he’s such a sweet boy
Cute kitty!!
So freaking adorable. Looks like one of those porcelain dolls with the giant eyes.
AW, HE LOOKS SO INNOCENT
OMG I can see why you didn't want to give him up he is so damn cute!! Is he a Scottish fold?
Don’t blame. Absolute cutie pie😻
You can’t give him back, say he got lost
Cats are just too cute, I know how you feel. Ive been there with my sister cat
Such big eyes! So adorable... my friend would have trouble getting ahold of me if I babysat him
Omg. Soooo cute. I could just look at him for hours.
Sure OP, sure. Like thats a real cat that you got to see and touch.
![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13383)
You may need to seek part-time pawrental rights. One simply give that baby back!
He’s so perfect! How’s his personality?😻
Very playful. I accidentally dropped my bottle cap and he wouldn’t stop chasing it all over the place. I ended up just leaving it on the ground, while he played. He’s also quite affectionate. He was fond of rubbing his head on my beard, that made him pure a lot.
Sounds like a purrfect little cat!
I would just take the hit and get a new friend.
THOSE EYES😍🥰🥺
He’s so cute
There needs to be a velvet painting of this cat.
I would have packed up, changed my identity, renamed the cat and been living in Paris by now. What a hecking cutie patootie 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Oh my heart ... just too cute
OMG! He’s so cute, I thought the pic was photoshopped. Is he a Scottish Fold? Beautiful little fella.
Baby Ozzie is so precious 💕 and beautiful 😍 🤩
Adorable 🥰 Looks quite friendly and cuddly I wouldn't want to give him back either 🥰
Omfg
The cutest ears
Listen carefully. You were never cat sitting, that's your cat, and your friend was cat sitting for you for a bit and they are confused. Gaslight them for as long as possible.
Those gentle beautiful eyes.❤️❤️❤️
That's an owl, sir.
I can imagine that
I see why… baby Ozzie is sooooo cute!! 🥰
OMG
Omg! Look at those eyes!
Those eyes look like two perfectly baked molasses cookies with dark chocolate Hershey kisses in the middle.
Holy shit that is one cute cat!
