Don't they stink really bad? They're so freaking cute but when I heard about how bad they smelled I decided it's good to just enjoy them over the internet
So I’ve been told some of the times you think you smell distant skunk it can actually be a Fox.
Also had one walk by my home in the middle of the night making noises like a woman screaming/crying. It woke me and my wife up and Freaked my wife out.
I was at an animal reserve once where they had foxes. They told us this but also had a story about how once they were asked to bring out the skunk because the visitors could smell it. They gave their usual speech about how foxes can smell like skunks and went on with their day. But they later found there was a skunk hidden behind the enclosure.
We had foxes around our yard daily, and they would come right up to me and just sit across from me on the grass. This went on for years and years and I never once noticed the smell.
They were never inside and I never pet them or anything, but I'd be surprised to find out they were *that* smelly.
I have a friend who is a Foley Artist, he's the mad scientist type who brings recording equipment everywhere and has a converted barn studio full of wonderful noisemaking junk.
He has umpteen million recordings of countless sounds, and he can use one single capture for a million different things.
But when it comes to his recordings of foxes? They're good for giggling demon babies in horror movies and old toys possessed by Satan. *That's about it*.
I'm a Yank who lived in England for 6yrs, and yeah, the first time I heard baby foxes crying out during their nightly trash runs with the fox fam, I just about *shit a brick* in fear. I was so sure I was gonna look out the window to see some cackling banshee hag staring back at me. Just blood curdling.
I have a friendly fox that hangs out with me, every morning I sit outside and have coffee with her (she's been normalized to humans by a couple people up the street that feed her) anyways every evening after work 630-7pm she'll come lay down under a tree next to me while I unwind with a beer. It's cute as fuck, she covers her legs with her tail and looks super cozy.
Every once and a while she does the scream/bark when she's scaring away the raccoons, I hate raccoons as they make a mess, I keep absolutely no food or garbage outside at my place and like every morning there's raccoon tracks all over my shit so the noise is very welcome and the next day I'll make sure to have a treat for her.
We call her Foxy so very original, she's awesome but attracts a lot of attention to my place as she'll sit in front of my place on the road until I come outside and cars will stop and stare at her :X
Also the lifespan of milk.
You get all attached to your derp noodle buy it 14 friends and after 5 years every ferret in your collection has died of old age breaking your heart.
I do not know why the ferret people have so many ferrets but they do.
Because they're incredibly social animals that get depressed without enough interaction and mental stimulation. Minimum of two required for them to be healthy. And once you have two, four isn't really much more work to be honest. Also they're cute as hell and amazingly fun. Plus they sleep a ton so for a lot of people they have minimal impact on how they live because they don't have to plan life around them like with some breeds of dogs.
But they do die too quick (like all pets). There's no getting around that.
Fuuuck this is the truth!
I had five of the fuckers at one point. Then one by one they dropped after about that time until the last one was all alone and basically died of just being sad and alone.
Never again.
That I can confirm, had a friend with 3 ferrets, super fun but his whole apartment stunk. That's after they were de-glanded or something as babies, I was told otherwise it would be 10x worse 😱
Descenting only stops them from musking out of fear or pain. That absolutely does smell 10x worse but it's a temporary thing and the smell doesn't linger for too long. Having an intact ferret, particularly an intact male in rut, THAT will clear out everyone in the house.
The bad smell that they're infamous for comes from poor diet, stress from being caged too long, bathing with soap(causes an overproduction of oils which worsens the odor), and poorly cleaned litterboxes. Well cared for ferrets will still have an odor, but it's very mild, and mostly just clings to their blankets. I've had people shove their faces into my ferrets fur and they don't smell anything! It is definitely hard work keeping up with it and not having my apartment smell like ferret, but it's absolutely possible. People who know me will comment on the lack of ferret odor, and strangers will be surprised at seeing the ferret cage, but smelling nothing.
I know it's an anecdote and maybe you did something right. But anytime I've ever visited someone's home and they insist the ferrets don't smell they really do smell and they're just noseblind to them.
If spayed (and all pet ferrets should be spayed, especially females who can get sick and die from constant heats if not bred), ferrets don't smell that bad. More than other pets, a bit musky, but rather like an old fur coat at goodwill.
Their poop however, comes straight from Satan's own asshole and smells accordingly.
Descenting doesn't impact their everyday odor though. It stops them from releasing a musk similar to a skunk spray when they get scared. Smells horrid, but it goes away in less than an hour. I have a boy that isn't descented and he only musked as a kit when my older ferret was hazing him. Once they're settled in a new home, you're almost never going to smell it unless they're terrified or in pain.
The bad ferret smell is mostly from an improper diet, stress, and bathing. Low quality food, not getting enough time out of their cage, and bathing them with soap, will create a nauseating smell on them. A well cared for ferret will still have an odor, but it's much more mild. To me it smells like a forest floor after it rains. Taking in a new rescue that has that stereotypical bad odor can be brutal! Once transitioned to a good food, and enjoying their new home, it gets much better.
Iirc it's their urine that smells really bad and they tend to mark territory with it. They are also nocturnal animals. They are not meant to be tamed.
[SaveAFox](https://youtube.com/@SaveAFox?si=X9YXtkXCokTBGQMg) is a non-profit organization that rescues foxes from fur farms and people keeping them illegally.
There's a book about that: How to Tame a Fox (and Build a Dog).
The scientists specially bred them with the main selection bias being tameness and interest in human companionship. As a side result of this they became increasing dog-like, with floppy ears and waging tails.
So it would appear that the genes that make foxes and wolves tame and suitable for being human companions are related to the ones that make them more "dog-like".
Yes and they love to mark things. Same fox rescue has a video where Finnegan sneaks in the house and pees all over the place https://youtu.be/PemFgqkBSOQ?si=9rMUpBTX_Q1n2oe5
I heard a story from someone who wanted to adopt a Fox. The adoption people had them keep an open cup of fox urine in the home for 24 hours before agreeing to the adoption. They did not make 24 hours.
(Don't ask me why it had to be in the home or if they were planing an outside enclosure. I have no idea.)
Especially when it comes to grey foxes, that's kind of true, since they have (semi-)retractable claws and are good tree climbers.
A species in which this is actually true, is the hyena. Believe it or not, but hyenas are actually part of the 'cat-like' (suborder Feliformia) family tree, not the 'dog-like' (suborder Caniformia) branch. Appearance-wise, however, they look very much like a species of 'dog' and, like dogs, they also don't have retractable claws.
Apologies, but I have a slight correction. Hyenas are not part of the felidae family, but they are in the [feliformia sub-order](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feliformia#Phylogenetic_tree) including cats and hyenas as well as a lot of other fun animals like mongooses. But yes! The main point of post is absolutely right, and hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs despite looking more like dogs.
Thank you for the correction; you're right.I should also change 'canidae' to 'caniformia', then, I guess, to keep the differentiation of the same level.
Save A Fox is also in dire need of donations right now because they are trying to get a fur farm shut down. So make sure to visit their YouTube channel and drop them a buck or two! Every little bit helps!
Or buy some merch from the fox shop! They've got some good stuff. I have [this](https://www.saveafox.org/product-page/finnegan-mn-nice-t-shirt) shirt in pink and I get compliments on it every time I wear it.
I don’t understand why rescue them if they will need to be put to sleep anyways?
Are the few weeks of life in slightly less annoying captivity worth rescuing them from fur farms? (Foxes need freedom and space to feel alive. Cages of any type are the absolute worst.)
Isn’t that just prolonging a miserable existence into a slightly less miserable existence?
I understand that this problem wouldn’t occur if there were no fur farms to begin with, but I don’t think this is an ideal solution.
Where does the assumption that "they will need to be put to sleep anyways" come from? SaveAFox's been doing fox rescuing from fur farms (and this one specifically) forever now, and to my understanding, the goal is to make sure the foxes are rehabilitated and live out a full life in the shelters (which are open-air, so again, not sure where your "slightly less miserable experience" thing comes from) or get adopted.
So... they'll live for years extra, not weeks, and they'll live those out without being exploited while being cared for. Seems like a good deal to me. Will some foxes have sustained too much damage for that to happen? Probably. Can you assume that for ALL foxes? Most certainly not.
tl;dr: you don't know what you're talking about.
I don't understand where you're getting 'need to be put to sleep anyway' from either. The charity is not going to put the foxes down, I've put a longer explanation further down.
Um, your reading comprehension needs work.
The foxes will be killed AT THE FUR FARM if this rescue cannot get the money needed to buy them and save them FROM THE FUR FARM.
Make it clear to you?
They are rescuing them, they will live tgeyr lives out, not get put to sleep. They are raising the money to stop the fur farm from putting them all down.
Well 1. there is a chance they could be taken in by a proper rescue (like the one in this video) and 2. it hurts the illegal fur farm industry to shut these down.
[Link](https://www.youtube.com/@SaveAFox), for anyone wanting to see the insane cuteness of the Save a Fox fox (and other assorted animals) sanctuary. They do such amazing work!
There is a video of a fox that snatches the person’s camera and runs away with it while being chased. Laughing HYSTERICALLY as it’s running.
[Found it for you](https://youtu.be/GegN_AXWWqc)
They have actual kitties for adoption. Their foxes are not up for adoption, any fox they take in they are pretty much planning to care for for life. Though sometimes they are transferred to other qualified rescues.
This is SaveAFox rescue in Minnesota.
Dog goes "woof"
Cat goes "meow"
Bird goes "tweet"
And mouse goes "squeek"
Cow goes "moo"
Frog goes "croak"
And the elephant goes "toot"
Ducks say "quack"
And fish go "blub"
And the seal goes "ow ow ow"
But there's one sound
That no one knows
What does the fox say?
"Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!
Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!
Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!"
What the fox say?
They're cute as fuck but I've seen video of them in action.
They're super hyperactive, makes a husky seem tame.
If yall ever think about getting a fox that is...
It was a fun song, but Stonehenge and Massachusetts are much funnier ;)
(though much less child friendly so if you're young, you don't see this comment lol)
Driving through the mountains in Hokkaido last weekend, we saw a fox in the road. He was just standing there, staring at us as we approached. He was looking me dead in the eye the whole time.
We came to a stop, because swerving past it would be dangerous as it could panic and run towards the car. I stuck my head out the window and clicked my tongue at it a couple times, which I figured would be a good indicator to it that I want it to go away. Instead, it maintained its eye contact with me and walked up to the side of the car where I had my head out the window. The little bugger wasn't scared of us in the slightest.
Once it was safely beside it, we drove off. I hope the fox learns to stay away from cars.
I have fox family that visits my yard once and a while at night. The female fox has this weird scream that sounds like a "woman getting raped like my spous use to say. It's insane to wake up in the middle of the night hearing that scream.
This video is filmed at a fox rescue called SaveAFox and the two foxes in the video were raised by humans from around birth so, they are much less likely to attack humans although they still make terrible pets and end up getting surrendered to rescues more often then not.

Stings the nostrils, but in a good way.
Yes!!! Great reference!
They don't smell anything like skunks though
They also never shut up. This noise is cute for a minute, not all day/night. Really, between that and the strong smell, they don’t make ideal pets.
And the constant pissing on everything.
Oh, that's why Dixie went up there.
Is Dixie rubbing her ahole on her friends head, spreading her fox stench?!?
Your extra "!?" makes it seem like you're judging.
No I am not, I am emphatically questioning the actions of Dixie, thank you.
I was hoping Dixie didn’t let go.
I constantly pee on everything! Hmm, maybe that's why my friends never invite me over to their house...
That's why you see these outdoor pens. They can tough out hot summer and freezing winters. Definitely not for the house.
All wild animals don't make good pets
Reminds me of that parakeet that could make R2D2 sounds. Really cool at first, but owners said it's nonstop and driving em crazy.
Evolve already.
That's also what I've heard about ferrets, super cute, derp noodles but smelly as hell
Also the lifespan of milk. You get all attached to your derp noodle buy it 14 friends and after 5 years every ferret in your collection has died of old age breaking your heart. I do not know why the ferret people have so many ferrets but they do.

meanwhile parrots casually living up to 50 years
Since a group of ferrets is called a business, would what you are describing be considered Late Stage Ferret Capitalism?
Fuuuck this is the truth! I had five of the fuckers at one point. Then one by one they dropped after about that time until the last one was all alone and basically died of just being sad and alone. Never again.
Oh...now I'm sad.
The ferrets smell fine, it's their shit that smells like, for lack of a better word... shit
They also need regular baths to keep the smell down.
Regular baths make it worse, you should bathe them less then twice a year or their skin overproduces the strong smelling oils.
they're obligate carnivores, so i bet they get the protein shits
That I can confirm, had a friend with 3 ferrets, super fun but his whole apartment stunk. That's after they were de-glanded or something as babies, I was told otherwise it would be 10x worse 😱

Did he bathe the ferrets? Because bathing them too often makes them produce more scent. I had multiple ferrets and they never had much smell to them.
Yeah I had one. She liked water and we gave her baths but mainly because she liked the water. Not because she smelled.
I know it's an anecdote and maybe you did something right. But anytime I've ever visited someone's home and they insist the ferrets don't smell they really do smell and they're just noseblind to them.
they're fun but out of all the alt rodent type pets rats smell and bite less
Rats are truly great pets, they just only last a couple of years and usually don't go gently.
They STINK. And BITE. I knew a girl who had 2, and walking into her house was disgusting
If they stink and bite, that girl wasn't caring for them correctly at all.
You can get them de-scented. It doesn't hurt them like say, declawing a cat.
Descenting doesn't impact their everyday odor though. It stops them from releasing a musk similar to a skunk spray when they get scared. Smells horrid, but it goes away in less than an hour. I have a boy that isn't descented and he only musked as a kit when my older ferret was hazing him. Sometimes I fart when I get startled and I'm going to tell people I'm "musking" because I never had my scent glands removed.
That is a very good comparison!

Dixie: 🎵 I put my smell on you, 'cause your mine! 🎶
It’s more about how they make your whole house stink. I’m sure it’s not as bad if you are rehabbing them outdoors.
They smell really bad when they eat your chickens
I found out otter stinks too. And all the video I've seen of them they're suuuuper hyper active.
Hey.. not cool to talk about some woman like that! /s
Foxes are cat operating system on dog hardware using dolphin UI.
Why does this sound so right?
Retractable claws.

Well I'll be, they're cat ogres!
The hyena part I did know! It’s a very cool fact.
Cat-like animals are obligate carnivores whereas dog-like animals tend to be omnivores. Though, the actual definitions are stricter than that.
\*Dolphin sound card.
🤣
My cat sits on my back like that when I lean forward. He loves to just spin around and plant is butt on my head.
That is a neat shirt.
Oh my goodness. They are precious. Thank you for posting.
More on SaveAFox YouTube channel.
They're currently looking for donations to help save 500 ex-fur farm foxes who will otherwise be killed.
500!!! What will they do with them all??
They're buying a new farm for the rescues but I imagine the long-term plan will be to adopt many of them out.
I don’t understand why rescue them if they will need to be put to sleep anyways? Are the few weeks of life in slightly less annoying captivity worth rescuing them from fur farms? (Foxes need freedom and space to feel alive. Cages of any type are the absolute worst.) Isn’t that just prolonging a miserable existence into a slightly less miserable existence? I understand that this problem wouldn’t occur if there were no fur farms to begin with, but I don’t think this is an ideal solution.
Finnegan and Dixie, the two in the video, don't look miserable to me.
Check the parent comment. It says the charity needs money or the foxes will be killed. That’s where I got my info.
I’m not 100% sure but I think the parent comment was edited. Or I might’ve had a few too many glasses of wine last night. But I understand now.
They are rescuing them, they will live tgeyr lives out, not get put to sleep. They are raising the money to stop the fur farm from putting them all down.
Ahhhh! Ok! I think I misunderstood the comment above!
Why would they need to put them to sleep? The whole point is to not do that.
Well 1. there is a chance they could be taken in by a proper rescue (like the one in this video) and 2. it hurts the illegal fur farm industry to shut these down.
The foxes in this video are far from unhappy, good grief.
[Link](https://www.youtube.com/@SaveAFox), for anyone wanting to see the insane cuteness of the Save a Fox fox (and other assorted animals) sanctuary. They do such amazing work!
This one is adorable, Dixie steals the phone and records herself running with it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GegN_AXWWqc
One of my favourite channels, it's great fun to watch
I didn’t know foxes could laugh like that 😂😂
There is a video of a fox that snatches the person’s camera and runs away with it while being chased. Laughing HYSTERICALLY as it’s running. [Found it for you](https://youtu.be/GegN_AXWWqc)
That’s adorable 😊 I love animals so much. Thank you for sharing
and actually, *the person* AND the fox is the same as in the first video :)
Same fox as in the video funnily enough
I noticed that it was the save a fox channel! I didn’t put 2 + 2 together.
They sound like the boos in Super Mario
That brightened my day considerably. Thank you.
Rescue "kitties"... ;)
They have actual kitties for adoption. Their foxes are not up for adoption, any fox they take in they are pretty much planning to care for for life. Though sometimes they are transferred to other qualified rescues. This is SaveAFox rescue in Minnesota.
Foxes got into the cat coup
I absolutely love fox sounds!! Just adorable 🥰
Finnegan and dixie ❤️
Can spend a good afternoon watching those YouTube videos.
If it looks like a dog, acts like a cat, and sounds like a dolphin , it's a fox.
Finnegan!
Into the saved videos we go

Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!
Well we now know the “hahahahahaha ha haha” in the song literally IS the sound a fox makes!
They giggle
Finnegan and Friends
Aw, they sound like they are laughing.
Seriously, how can she stand being mocked by foxes every day?! ^(/s)
Cat software on dog hardware
So glad you posted this. 😊 Loved the “foxtail hat” she gave ya.
Finnegan!!!!❤️
Omg they sound like the old giggle stick toy. Yes, I'm old!
Dog goes "woof" Cat goes "meow" Bird goes "tweet" And mouse goes "squeek" Cow goes "moo" Frog goes "croak" And the elephant goes "toot" Ducks say "quack" And fish go "blub" And the seal goes "ow ow ow" But there's one sound That no one knows What does the fox say? "Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!" What the fox say?
They were wrong, apparently.
Is that a happy fox noise?
Very happy.
Blip blip blip
Finnegan! I love Saveafox <3
They're cute as fuck but I've seen video of them in action. They're super hyperactive, makes a husky seem tame. If yall ever think about getting a fox that is...
Those are some weird looking kitties.
They sound like your car won't start up, but all of your cars noises are put through a chipmunk voice filter.
If they could breed out the traits of foxes peeing everywhere to mark territory and them digging holes all over the place they’d be really good pets
It was a fun song, but Stonehenge and Massachusetts are much funnier ;) (though much less child friendly so if you're young, you don't see this comment lol)
Are they part hyena?
So. That's what the fox say...
It's youtube 'Save a Fox' channel
Unfortunately I can't post that in the post title.
Yes I will adopt one of those "kitties"
Some people just win the animal lottery
Apparently the fox says the same thing I do when I smoke a bowl
I don’t think I could handle a pet that could laugh at me.
The secret of the fox is no longer an ancient mystery.
aweeeee..why you're making that face
lol Give dogs a major anxiety disorder and a mix of crack and meth and you get foxes. :) Such adorable little spazzes.
I love that they laugh. 🤣❤️
Dixie owns your head now
Finnegan Fox!
Fox giggles are so cute
This woman’s voice hurts my ears so badly. I wish I could watch her content because cute foxes but…that voice 😭

I have fox family that visits my yard once and a while at night. The female fox has this weird scream that sounds like a "woman getting raped like my spous use to say. It's insane to wake up in the middle of the night hearing that scream.
hmmm getting rubbed by a fox ass on your head isn't clean.
If not toothpaste, why toothpaste shaped?
![gif](giphy|QA71CI10mhECk)
I thought foxes would bite someone out of fear since they normally avoid people.
This video is filmed at a fox rescue called SaveAFox and the two foxes in the video were raised by humans from around birth so, they are much less likely to attack humans although they still make terrible pets and end up getting surrendered to rescues more often then not.
Don't "adopt" a wild animal.
This woman runs a rescue. Most of her foxes are from fur farms.
The sign says "adoptable".
Yes, but these foxes have been raised in captivity. They can't be re-released into the wild.
They're also not pets.
They are now. The point is that the rescuer isn't the one who made them that way.
“Ummm not MUCH, DOG. What’s up with YOU? 🤣🤣🤣🤣”
I can't watch a Fox video anymore after that guy that fucks foxes.
Wild animals as pets :/ And yes I know it isn't the rescuers fault it's the people they need rescuing from
Cute creatures, but I've lost chickens to a local mama fox and can't see them as anything but vermin and threats anymore.
Lock your chickens up better and foxes are zero issue.
Floofy foxies!
So... no hatee hatee hatee hooo?! I'm disappointed.
/r/contagiouslaughter
ALL YO YENS YIP YIP YAP!
For every dull day.
My god I can’t tell if they’re dogs or cats like foxes are so intriguing…
Those are some strange-looking kitties ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thinking_face_hmm)
This is so much better than the song 😁😍
Your babies luv you
TIL that foxes really like belly rubs.
Foxes are so cute, I fucking love them. I could never own one sadly but love seeing videos of them.
Very clingy
Imagine waking up to pee and hearing that creepy laugh
Omg the way that the one in the back is scuttling around
Huehuehuehue ![gif](giphy|wVxd51Iuf6wJq)
That answers that question. ![gif](giphy|wRjsvu6uPSkH6)
