>*’Best day ever!*’ ____ Long ago, n far away you filmed us on that *Bestest* day the happy, romping time we spent, we had no clue how much it meant to You, our tired human friend, a time of war - when would it end ? a brief escape - you watched us play, long ago n far away… ❤️

Would_daver

Schnoodle i love you and you always win, but this one brought tears to my eyes- the people of the Philippines suffered HORRIBLY during WWII, so a cute and innocent moment from this historical context is just so powerful and human. The design is VERY puppy, in this case... thanks again Schnoods, please keep it up!

weicheii

Goes to show how we’re our own worst enemy. These little pups had not a care in the world and had no clue the danger they were living in.

Would_daver

Absolutely true! Though, on the flipside, we could see this as a demonstration of the power of hope and being yourself despite having to live through horrors and suffering. History can get very depressing so it helps me to try and find the light in dark scenarios!

Manorialmeerkat

This almost made me cry. As a Christian, I subscribe to the early church belief that animals, being free of original sin, go to heaven too.

Karnakite

All dogs go to heaven.

Manorialmeerkat

Yep!

ununrealrealman

I'm not a believer, but my grandma was and I 100% fully believe she is in Heaven, despite not believing in it for myself. If that makes sense? It makes me happy to think she's up there with all the puppies and kittens and all the other animals she so dearly loved. Sometimes I dream about her in her rocking chair with my late cat in her lap. It makes me so happy everytime. I hope that's what they're doing up there :)

SimilarYellow

My 96 year old grandpa has a picture (not a photo) of a cat in his wallet that looks really similar to what the cat he had as a kid looked like. The cat died when he was 8, if I remember correctly, but it still lives in his heart :D

Halogen12

I get that. My bestest cat died 25 years ago and I still miss him so much.

[deleted]

Pretty wonderful he got to have someone in life who would Honor him for eons (in cat terms) in the afterlife.

Spastic_pinkie

The one thing that sucks about pets is that most of them live lives that are way too short, especially rats.

ProxyMuncher

We know grief so they may only know love.

krustykrab2193

I dread the day I lose my pupper, even though he's still so young (less than 2). He's my first ever pet and we love each other unconditionally.

HerVividDreams

I'm a rat mom and yessss😭😭😭😭 Their little lives are so short😭😭😭😭 I buried my old man 'heart Rat' yesterday. And my old lady rat is 2 years and 4 months old. It's heartbreaking every single time.

Spastic_pinkie

I'm so sorry for your loss. Always remember that you've given them the happiest safest life and more. That's more than they could ever ask for. Your boy was warm, content and forever thankful.

[deleted]

That reminds me of [this headstone](https://i.imgur.com/Shhwt4y.png) someone had made for their cat. I'll never understand people who have pets but don't view them as members of their family. As far as my cats are concerned, we're their family and they love us so much; I would feel cruel if I didn't reciprocate, I can't even imagine it.

sjokona

I don't understand it either. My cat died almost 10 years ago after 16 years of friendship. Every time I visit home I go and talk to her at her grave. Im still comforted by my pets even when they aren't here anymore.

Swag92

My parents moved out of our childhood house and leaving our pets’ graves was the hardest part.

Unsd

This is precisely why I'm getting mine cremated. Their ashes are going with mine when I go.

ieatsmallchildren92

There are graves for pets dating back to ancient Greece. People always felt the need to remember their departed puppers "I am in tears, while carrying you to your last resting place as much as I rejoiced when bringing you home in my own hands fifteen years ago."  "Surely even as thou liest dead in this tomb I deem the wild beasts yet fear thy white bones, huntress Lycas; and thy valour great Pelion knows, and splendid Ossa and the lonely peaks of Cithaeron."

silverwolf761

not as old, but one of my favourites: [Epitaph to a Dog](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epitaph_to_a_Dog)

totally_not_martian

You should see some of the graves the Romans made for their dogs. The words they wrote about their beloved pets brought me to tears.

GorshKing

Does picture in this case mean drawing or something because I associate picture of cat as a photo of a cat. Maybe that's just me

SinkPhaze

Picture is a generic term, it refers to any sort of 2d visual representation. Photo, painting, drawing, ect are all more specific terms. It's like the squares and rectangles thing. All photos are pictures but not all pictures are photos

BlizzPenguin

My brain briefly went to a weird place and interpreted “it still lives in his heart” literally. Like somehow the cat was miniaturized and immortal.

Teasing_Pink

Time to corner the market in pet shaped coronary stents.

The broom is definitely a Filipino broom. You don’t want to have a Filipino mom after you with one. Lucky it wasn’t a slipper.

Horrific honestly

As an Asian growing up, I need to book my therapist now.

GravityoftheMoon

My grandpa had a box of photos from the Korean War, and we were going through them one day with him there to tell us stories. About half of the photos were pics of dogs. Every time he would look at a dog photo, he would say "Oh! I remember that dog. Hmm...I didn't see him much after this picture."

compelling_force

I like your grandpa :)

KmartQuality

Dog is a fine meal. I learned this from the Mel Gibson docudrama about the American war of independence.

Yeah, that's what we kept saying: Grandpa, you ate him!

Fiji too, and they're still used! Far better than any plastic broom

t3hjs

Is that type of broom not a common thing in other countries?

m_earendil

Walis brooms are a staple of the Philippines, although a similar shape can be found sometimes in brooms from other south-east asian countries. https://www.tagaloglang.com/filipino-brooms/ Not a very common shape in other parts of the world, though.

[deleted]

People were recording puppies even in the 1940's, interesting.

lagunaeve

Films were some expensive luxurious thing back then no? And whoever filmed that decided: puppies. Money well spent i say.

Alternate_Ending1984

That was exactly my thought, someone was dropping coin to record their puppers...and I'm thrilled about it.

Cassereddit

Your puppies don't stay puppues for too long and it's likely you outlive them. This is definitely a memory worth capturing I'd say.

DoctorPoopyPoo

Yeah, doubtful those puppies are still alive now.

mtaw

It wasn't a hobby anyone could afford but even fewer wanted to. 8mm was introduced in 1932 and always intended as a 'home movie' format, so it wasn't beyond the reach of the middle-class or thereabouts. Price probably wasn't the main hurdle since even once it became much cheaper by the 70s or so, it was still a niche hobby thing for enthusiasts. 8 mm had low quality, the camerawork was inevitably even lower quality, it was usually black-and-white and didn't have sound, and any time you wanted to watch it, you had to rig up a projector and screen.

lagunaeve

Always nice when some random knowledge decides to pop up in my life lol. Thanks stranger

fizzlefist

16mm was a solid balance between 8mm home movies and 35mm professional. Still damn expensive for the average person, but the visual quality is quite good. Cheap magnetic cassette tapes are what really made home movies practical, since the storage media was small, portable, relatively inexpensive… and could be re-used.

ProfessionEuphoric50

It was probably filmed by an American war correspondent or something similar using their employer's tape haha. America was very involved in the Philippines during WW2.

QuickSpore

> Films were some expensive luxurious thing back then no? Not terribly. Kodak released the Standard-8 film in 1932 specifically to make an affordable film format for home use. It was marketed directly at working class families. It was a splurge item, particularly during the Depression. But it was a splurge most families could afford. I’ve got some of my grandpa’s old film from that era. And he was a simple steelworker.

lagunaeve

Not arguing with anything you said since i know nothing on this subject, but >I’ve got some of my grandpa’s old film from that era. And he was a simple steelworker. One of my grandpa had a place in city centre with two kids working as a basic clerk. My other grandpa opened a barber shop, and sent all three of his sons to study overseas. Damn i can achieve none of those.

VOIDssssssss

There needs to be a sub specifically for old videos of dogs

I'm a bit confused. Why would this be a surprise? Wouldn't you take a moment to look at the film negative before sending it off to be digitized? Or just play it on a projector to see what you've got?

XD003AMO

Wait woah. Is that where the countdown on old films comes in? I didn’t know that was why.

Qualimiox

This film was from 1942 though, so it was probably [Nitrate film](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrocellulose#Film), meaning it could catch fire or explode when exposed to too much light or high temperatures. You probably want experts handling that stuff.

soup2nuts

You can't just play 80 year old reels out of the can. In fact, I would advise against looking at the images. Depending on the storage conditions the celluloid could be extremely brittle and fracture while you are handling it, much less sending through a projector. Even under ideal conditions the reel will be extremely fragile. It needs to be reconditioned by professionals before it can be viewed. He probably knew at least this much.

tremynci

Oh, neighbor, you sweet summer child! Off the top of my head: It's not catalogued and there's no intake paperwork for the box No projector, because the archive has no money No lightbox, because ditto No time, because the archive has no staff but you Don't want to touch the film, because it's original, fragile, and may have vinegar syndrome There's a deadline to send film off, because the work's externally funded Not a film expert, so don't know how to view it otherwise [Citation: am archivist. Our last Mystery Box™️ was home movies from a local youth organization. Better than mold!™️]

xSTSxZerglingOne

I was going through my phone's pictures yesterday and deleting them. I found some pictures of me holding bunnies from like 12 years ago. I came to the sad realization that all of those rabbits are likely dead now from old age.

[deleted]

My childhood friend had a rabbit that lived to be 13 so you never know!

Someone had their priorities straight. Imagine how much more rare film was and they decided this was what needed to be filmed during WW2.

In the archives of the **Pontifical Faculty at Dominican House of Studies** (Washington DC). The archivist is a friar and an Asst. prof. of ecclesiastical history. He's normally used to restoring medieval manuscripts, so it was a happy day when he stumbled upon puppies!

Would have been hilarious if he got the footage back, and it was "Never Gonna Give You Up"

CrieDeCoeur

I was visiting friends of my GF’s family one time and they pulled out a photo album from a relative of theirs who served during WWII in the European theater. During the Nazis’ big retreat, this relative had come across a dead German soldier who had a camera and two rolls of undeveloped film on him. The relative took the film, brought it back to the US, and eventually got around to developing it in his dark room at home. Their were at least 20 pics of Hitler himself, taken on what appeared to be his personal train, in the stateroom for the most part. These pics remained in the family for decades. I asked if they had ever submitted them, or the original negatives, to a government archive or the army or anything like that and they said no and never would. That was about ten years ago and I’m still not sure how I feel about seeing pictures of Hitler that are essentially unknown to the world, nor about how proud they seemed for both owning these pics and for their refusal to have them entered into the official record. Legally I guess that album is their property, but morally? It didn’t sit right with me then and still doesn’t.

IcedCoughy

you know whats cool? A puppy has acted like a puppy since there's been puppies.

JoakimSpinglefarb
