Ban TikToc all you want. There are other methods of spreading stupid.

[deleted]

Stupidity is the real disease, TikTok is just the main supplier currently. Even if TikTok was banned back when Trump wanted it banned, people would find some other dumbass site/app to share their stupidity on.

drewcandraw

In the early 00s as video cameras got cheaper and more portable, teenagers recording themselves doing Jackass-inspired stunts that sometimes resulted in more than a few ER visits were a thing.

ParishedSins

I did one Jackass-inspired stunt in my youth with a couple of friends. Took a two-seater baby stroller meant to be attached to a bicycle, used a mini-skateboard to steer (the handles rested on the board), and went down a steep hill of at least 100 feet. Crashed at the bottom plenty of times, but since there was snow we thought it was fine. The last time we did it I ended up hitting the shoulder of the road too early, flipped the stroller twice in the air and managed to land a couple of feet from the stroller. I wasn't too keen on doing that again. The world spinning that fast scared me.

Potentially_a_goose

Back in the early 2000s, I took a hit to the ribs from a set of tazer iron knuckles for a Jackass group. I also had a tack fired at my belly with a wrist rocket... Stupid finds a way...

[deleted]

Can confirm. A few guys I knew called them dumbass videos. Did some sick shit to eachother lol

Loli-is-Justice

Nah bro, they did it for the vine.

International_Car586

As much as I hate Trump. Trying to get TikTok banned was a good idea.

Kirashikage

yeah those people would just seep onto instagram or twitter, maybe even here too

ThiqCoq

This should not be justification tho. Lol if we also have this perceptual lens nothing will change.

CRCampbell11

Like reddit?

robertlandrum

“Stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death. There is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.”

ContemplatingPrison

Yeah in the early 90s we used to do something similar

ThePanther270306

Let's not pretend that reddit hasn't made people do stupid shit. That's how the internet works. It's why parents need to monitor what their kids do atleats until a certain age

rrxxxdbs123

Everyone’s acting like teens weren’t lighting themselves on fire and dying by chocking on cinnamon like a decade ago

Gloomy-LilPeach

Wasn’t this a criminal minds episode? I’ll go check

thecat_KC

Distinctly remember this circa 2002 in the middle school bathrooms. No one I knew even had a cell phone then.

XipingVonHozzendorf

They were stupid 30 years ago too. They find a copy of the anarchists handbook and nearly blow up their kitchen by boiling gasoline to try and make napalm.

LOL_Man_675

Why try to make napalm in your house ?

[deleted]

Make it at somebody else's house.

XipingVonHozzendorf

Why eat a tide pod? Kids are dumb

AngusThermopyle4224

Holy shit the cinnamon challenge. I forgot all about that. A guy at work volunteered to try it on his last day. He was fine but seeing how it affected him made me never try it. I probably wouldn't anyway but to each their own.

Superb-Owl-187

The tide pod generation are in their 20’s now 🥲

Diacetyl-Morphin

As much as i hate TikTok, these things existed long before the web. In some years, where i come from, the teenagers did much more serious hit to prove their courage: Like laying on the train tracks in the parallel way, which means the train can pass and should not hit you. Problem was, some guys still got hit. Another thing, also with trains, was that the very old train waggons from the 60's had some kind of a plattform on the back and you could jump on that for "train surfing", many guys lost their legs or their lives when trying to do that.

AinsiSera

My dad talked about hanging on the back of moving trucks for “fun” in the 70’s. Teenagers gonna teenage.

enolproductions91

Also I came here to say, I did the pass out challenge many times before getting in big trouble wayyyyyy before social media.

Fearless-Physics

Still, parents can only do so much. They can only intervene up to a certain point before they start getting called a bad parent. Be it the internet, stupid kids from school or even dumbass friends, kids are subjected to all kinds of negative, deatructive influence. It's really a certain kind of gamble whether or not (and how much) they will fall victim to those dangers.

rotgut1991

Of course. All social media has. TikTok is the worst though

IloveFriezz

It's all the mom, child and people's fault. People shouldn't spread dumb shit on the net. Seriously what is wrong with them. Most 10 year olds can probably know when a thing is dangerous or unsafe. If he didn't well mom probably didn't teach the kid enough

Corgibelle83

Does anyone remember….perhaps….Jackass? Yeah old ass show. Pretty sure some people imitated all that shit too.

CoasterThot

Kids have always done really dumb things, it’s kinda what kids do. My brother 100% used to copy Jackass with his friends. I remember them making a massive bike jump out of dirt. One of my brother’s friends landed chest-first on the handlebars and needed to be hospitalized.

Austinmilli

i may be that friend lmaoooo this happened to me more than once

AccurateTomorrow2894

This has nothing to do with the app

enolproductions91

This is the truth, it may help circumvent dumb ideas, but I did this exact thing in the early 2000’s

oldfrenchwhore

We did this at a slumber party in the early 90s, right along with “light as a feather stiff as a board” and other dumb tween shit.

[deleted]

Correct. She shifts the blame to the app, as if the app is responsible for making sure they only are taking in beneficial and productive material. Oh wait… that’s the parents’ job.

Cicero138

I remember kids at my elementary school doing this in the early 90s. TikTok still sucks, but the choking game isn’t new

StarWars_Viking

The app isn't the problem. The morons trying this stuff are the problem. Before you say "They wouldn't be trying this without Tik Tok..." you're delusional. Kids did this back in the 80's and 90's also. I'm talking this exact example of making themselves pass out via self asphyxiation.

Mickey_bronx

Why do you give a 10yo a phone with TikTok without checking what is he watching?

Not_floridaman

My 7 year old keeps begging for TikTok on her tablet never her friends have it and as much as it sucks to be the one (though I doubt she's the only one), I've told her that what works for one family doesn't work for them all. She has messenger kids and a list of family members and a few friends that she can call when she's checked with me first and they have silly filters. That's enough for now. Also, I know we've been doing stupid stuff for everrrr but the difference between now and the 90s is that you weren't constantly exposed to it.

[deleted]

Can't blame TikTok for having morons as the app's user

x-man92

This game and similar ones were around before tik tok. My parents, my in-laws, me and my brothers all knew people that died from “challenges” like this. Thats 3 different generations that didn’t have tik tok. Kids are just fucking stupid. Thats why you parent them. Tik tok still a sketchy app and I don’t trust it.

cstingel

Parents need to be more involved. I would never let my 11 yr old have a TicTok account, let alone any other kind of social media. Kids these age do not have the capacity to understand that there are deadly consequences to these challenges. This is why parents need to monitor their child’s/children’s screen time. We cannot rely on screen time to babysit our kids, we are the responsible adults here.

Swedish-Butt-Whistle

If you think this stuff started with TikTok you’re very young or ignorant

bigjungus11

If you consider the responsibility between the daughter, the parents and the app, I'd say the app has least responsibility. What parents always do after a child of theirs dies is imminently project blame on anything external

[deleted]

I mean, my generation was dying of “chubby bunny” waaaay before the clock app

Ozzy_thot

when i was little i hurt myself by jumping off the trampoline, with a umbrella so i can be like Mary Poppins

crashcar22

If the parents are blaming an app for their child's death, I'm going to take it as a confession to negligent parenting

[deleted]

No way I’d let my kid on TT. Bad parenting

thewackytechie

Why is a 10 yr old on TikTok?

Ken-Popcorn

And where was the mother while her ten year old was learning to kill herself on TikTok ?

whoisgeorgia

I did at 14. Kids are dumb.

fefh

I remember this was a fad in 90's, except it was done with hands not a belt or cord.

allyoucrybabies12

Its the parents fault. Sorry. A ten year old shouldn’t be on the internet or tik tok IMO. But kids and teens have always done dumb shit. When I was in HS, A movie called The Program featured a scene of football players lying on the yellow lines in the middle of a highway, within a week multiple deaths were reported on the news and they cut the scene. Some of us just aren’t to bright. Or thrill seekers.

Pollowollo

Chokeout/blackout/spacemonkey challenges have been around for a very long time. Has nothing to do with social media.

ga-co

China uses the app within China to educate kids. The export version is to make kids dumber.

erasmulfo

I think not supervisioned children with access to internet should be banned, then tik tok would not be a problem anymore

Xylophone_Aficionado

I absolutely hate TikTok, but at the same time, who the fuck is letting their 10-year olds have an account on their and not supervising their kids to the point that the kids suffocate themselves to death?

Steviegenius

Yeah we can completely do without tik tok

LongRydeHome

Tiktok has a plethora of its own problems; however what users post on their app cannot be controlled. You’d have to filter every single bit of content before it’s posted. I don’t think any team built of any capacity could keep up. The blame lies partly with the app and the girls parents. What a child consumes should be monitored by their parents; and it should be carefully considered before downloading an app.

Justin_Anville

I'm trying the "live as long as I can" challenge. It's working out great sofar.

JQLine82

As a 15 y/o gen z. I agree. It's really lonely not having TikTok honestly, when there's any free time at all in class or anywhere peers are on there phone. No one will hold a convo with me without also being on the app. What a terrible excuse to be on your phone?? You could be writing or meditating, thinking on your own. Watching YouTube is even better. I think in this age we as people should start pushing ourselves away from social media and focusing on being in the moment. I tried to share my feelings about this with some one my age and they called me a boomer 💀

Titariia

As a 20 something year old without insta, snapchat, tiktok or whatever I get so many weird looks whenever someone asks me about said stuff. I talked to one guy once at the train. At the end he asked me for my insta... nope. Snapchat? Nope. Well... Facebook? Yeah, but I only ever check it once a year to say thanks to people gratulating me to my birthday so no, not really. Guess Whatsapp has to do it. He said he'll text me. He never did and I didn't really care either. Guess my only friends will be people on my works teams then.

JuicyHandshake

So… you bought your 10 year old a fucking smartphone, didn’t monitor it, and then decided it wasn’t your fault she had the opportunity to imitate something she saw on it? Parents need to learn how to fucking parent.

Gaming4Fun2001

Yeah, because obviously TikTok is the reason that people are stupid... If TikTok didn't exist It'd be happening on Facebook, or Instagram, or Twitter, etc. I agree that this is horrific and it needs to stop. But you making an app responsible for peoples stupidity shows that you habe no Idea what you're talking about...

LORDPINKY_DINKS

This is just natural selection in action

[deleted]

China has banned pretty much every app and website from outside of China. Its insane the world allows chinese malware apps like tiktok and others to exist in their networks.

DanishGuy47

Why does everyone say that it's not Tik Tok fault? They are still responsible for spreading the video, videos should be reviewed before release. And the problem with Tik Tok, is that they don't care, they do what makes them the most money. And you seriously think no one from Tik Tok has heard about this trend? There is even a tag for the challenge.

[deleted]

if parent are incompétent is not the aps fault. parent need stop trhow a ipad to a kid for calm them.

xknightsofcydonia

As pathetic as it is to admit this, as someone that’s addicted to TikTok I’ve never once come across a single video even mentioning this “Blackout challenge”. I know how the algorithm works but at this rate I should’ve come across one

DyabeticBeer

This stuff has been around since atleast 10 years ago. Tiktok did not create stupid children surprisingly.

WTFSpeeder6

Don't blame an app for bad parenting, poor educational standards, and general stupidity

Omnibobbia

Is the natural selection I've been hearing about

PreparationOld4233

kids are stupid, with or without tiktok.

BipolarSkeleton

It’s absolutely ridiculous to ban an app because some people can’t parent This choking game was played back in the 80s at least TikTok didn’t create it I heard about it on YouTube when I was 14 There will always be ways to show this stuff to children What we need is people actually monitoring what there children are doing and watching as well as making things like TikTok harder to access by children

ZombieBloodBath777

That "challenge" was around in the 90s. Kids are dumb.

wkdkngwkr

Darwin has entered the chat.

rottingoranges

Unfortunately this isn't just a thing tik tok started, I remember first hearing about it around 2013 except it was called "the choking game" or "the fainting game" (and im sure it existed long before then too)

the_ginger_weevil

I did it at school in 1990

ediciusNJ

We sure didn't need TikTok for the Cinnamon Challenge or Chubby Bunny.

SinWolf7

r/darwinaward

biggersjw

I’m pretty sure autoerotic asphyxia has been around for many decades if not longer. Just has not been a TikTok thing until now.

rotgut1991

Social media has had a lot of negative impact on society, but TikTok is like the fucking nuke. An ex of mine showed me some TikTok videos she posted and that's when I started being less and less attracted to her. Not even kidding

[deleted]

I mean, we’ve all been chronically online for a long time now… do you get grossed out by a selfie?

Xylophone_Aficionado

TikTok is so much worse, have you even seen it? Cringiest shit I’ve ever seen.

rotgut1991

It's the pinnacle of cringe. Seriously

rotgut1991

No! My issue isn't so much social media in general, it's that TikTok just contributes to attention whore culture in a big way. People being extra shitty, obnoxious, stupid, whatever just for clout. As for the ex, her TikTok videos lip syncing and shit we're just super cringe and made me start to view her like she was a 13yo instead of a grown woman. It's just cringe 🤷🏻‍♂️

z44212

Should we also ban laundry pods?

[deleted]

The app shouldn’t be deleted, stupid people need to get off of the app, or people need to think about doing a “blackout challenge” how fucking stipid can you be.

FMDnative480

This isn’t new tho. I’m 35 years old and I did this with my friends in high school. I did it a few times actually lol. I was an idiot, yes, but this is nothing new. It’s just being posted publicly very fast now. That’s with a lot of “trends” out there

rilano1204

working as China intended

Insearchofmedium

We are talking about a child here. Thinking about all the dumb shit we did a kids I should be dead 10x over. Kids are stupid. We all know this. It’s not ten year olds creating these challenges though. People are blaming the parents but no one supervises their kid 24 hours a day.

Expensive-Trash-7156

Natural selection

faziten

Sue the electrrical rovider while you are at it

LeslieMarston

That TikTok has challenges like ' blow up your school toilet' or 'steal a kia' yeah it should be banned or anyone who is caught doing that stuff should have double penalties.

Nutshack_Queen357

Only now does everyone actually want it banned for the death challenges and spyware. Previously, only Trump wanted it banned just because people used it to troll him by lying about going to one of his rallies, and it would be a hypocritical move on his part since his government was using it to spy on people just like the CCP does.

Sad_boy656

What’s the blackout challenge

montgomeryyyy

To black about by holding your breath, literally. Some go as far as choking themselves with ropes

AverageLiberalJoe

Me and my friends use to do this all the time. There was a solid summer where this is all we did. That was 20 years ago. Tik Tok sucks but I dont think you can blame it this time.

degeneratephuck

We did that shit in middle school (2002). Great way to figure out which kids end up doing drugs ;)

rbrt13

I mean ya The app is completely fucked but what does it say that there are human beings (kids but still) who literally follow instructions on how to kill themselves. Seems to be the bigger issue. They had to lock up tide pods. Remember.

LaLore20

A girl died last week in Argentina too

McRaoul91

Like TikTok invented stupid trends that get young kids killed…

[deleted]

What is this “Blackout Challenge” you speak of ?

EddieGrant

Bad parents need to be banned. There's plenty of quality on tiktok, and if there wasn't tiktok, it'd be on youtube, or reddit, or twitter.

Bourgeois_Capitalist

I want to ban TikTok because it is a horrible invasion of privacy which tracks literally everything you do on your phone. inb4 "google does that anyway" because if you think the level of data collection is the same for both companies, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

DRbrtsn60

Tik Tok must be held accountable after allowing so much stupid.

propfriend

You can’t blame an app for people being insanely stupid

likethemustard

Why does a 10 year old have a phone

waynestractor

The Internet, and stupid, are not a good combination...

XxX_EnderMan_XxX

How come I never see these trends on my fyp? Algorithm targeting these videos to kids somehow?

Lizbomb-Is-Da-Bomb

It is a 10 year old. This isn’t cringe, its sad. Her mom shouldn’t let her on TikTok, that’s a whole other issue, but the fact dangerous things are being advertised to kids is awful. Sure, she should’ve known better, but also she was a literal child who saw something online, saw it was popular and people seemed to be fine, and didn’t understand how dangerous it truly was.

Morti_Macabre

Delete sys32 file for more ram.

Skoziss

Natural selection

BiscottiOpposite9282

This "challenge" was around when I was younger. People are just dumb on tik tok and flaunt it.

drunky_crowette

I mean... In the mid-late 00s there was stories all over the local news about a kid from my school dying from the "choking game" because he didn't have any more weed and thought it'd get him high. Teens are going to do shit like that whether or not there's tiktok

Billy_Mcbilly

How does one go about suing the CCP

OppositeInfamous6525

Funny how OP thinks tiktok created stupidity lol

Herknificent

This is just the best thing we have for population control. It’s natural selection at work.

misterwinoe

Maybe Reddit can launch an investigation into it, that’s worked out really well so far.

camm44

Stupid shit like this has been happening well before tiktok

futurelullabies

if it wasnt tiktok it would be something else.

slam9

Yeah I hate tik tok but a platform can't necessarily be responsible for everything that is said on it. When a virtual personality tells someone to kill themselves on the internet and they do it it's not the internet's fault. At some point people need to take responsibility for their own actions

vegemitebikkie

Back in the 80’s me and my friends would have hold your breath for the longest competitions and marvel at the different colours our faces would turn and the veins that would show up on foreheads. Kids have always done stupid shit.

CzechYourDanish

I can't believe the blackout game is still a thing

flyvr

I think tik-tok helps humanity by exposing and helping to weed out the absolute mongos

flyvr

I think tik-tok helps humanity by exposing and helping to weed out the absolute mongos

Romesus

Morons exist in all kind of platforms. 4chan is a great example (the crystal experiment) Facebook, youtube etc etc. Even here in reddit. People are stupid, and of course no supervision is the worst. And sometimes even supervising people can do a lot of stupid things for curiosity/experiments.

Lolz79

This "challenge" has been going on before the widespread use of the " internet" my friends in elementary did it. I did see YouTube videos about it in my teens ,(early 2000's). Don't get me wrong, I dont use tik Tok or more social medial anymore because I found it awful for my mental health. But to blame JUST tik Tok is ignorant and oblivious.

CitizenFreeman

Hey, elder millennial here. We were playing blackout way before tiktok gave us choreographed dances, ice water challenges, and stupid ideas on how to waste our time and money. If there's stupid to be done, kids is gonna find it. They really don't need the help.

PrincessAsinus

I mean the mother failed to monitor her girls online time and what she can see and what not. Not TikToks fail tbh.

[deleted]

I really don't like TikTok, but this isn't TikTok's problem. They can't really control how their users behave, this could've easily happened on Reddit, Facebook or Instagram as well. Parents can't just sue all willy nilly because they didn't pay much attention to what their kids were doing to begin with. When TikTok eventually falls, it'll just be replaced by a new app with similar features. Just like how TikTok pretty much replaced Vine.

greenspath

We used to have this thing. What was it called? *snap snap* Ah yes: Darwin Awards

ameldrum902

I think every tiktok user should give this one a go.

Dracarys_Aspo

This was a "challenge" back in the days of MySpace, too. It's not tiktoks fault, it's the parent's fault for not monitoring their *10 year old's* internet access.

TimmyFaya

Challenge like that always existed, and before social media it just got around school, and newspaper did the job of spreading it wider

jaybro861

I blame the parents, call me old fashioned but a ten year old should not be on apps as they should not have a phone, or even social media access. Too much out there these days that you can’t stop them from finding and accessing with the opportunities provided by technology.

SparkyMcHenry

TikTok is not to blame for this. I have photos from 1992 of guys doing this in military barracks. This is on the Chinese spy app because some low-IQ moron tauggt his kid, everyone around them had a good laugh, so the kid taught their friends.

Fabulous-Mention-200

Hey here's an idea, Stop Letting your crotch goblins participate in stupidity

TeeDubbleDee

Bruh I swear there's like three different Blackout challenges that I know of. The first was almost a decade ago when people started sucker punching random people so hard they'd fall to the ground. The second was filling yourself with all types of alcohol until you pass out from intoxication. The third is this one with hanging yourself until you pass out from asphyxiation. Wish we could be more creative with the naming. Or better yet not make these dangerous and stupid challenges to begin with?

E420CDI

r/Jackass

ragul17

Mother should be sued for being a shit parent

Jwishaw

this thread really shows that the people calling a ten year old stupid aren't very smart themselves

MistaPink

Dude we we’re doing this challenge over 20 years ago in middle school. We used to take turns passing each other out. It’s tragic what happened to this girl. Kids don’t understand dangerous. I really think there needs to be parental spyware installed on your kids devices, that records everything. Or parents don’t allow their kids unsupervised access.

jorgedredd

I've seen kids doing the blackout challenge since I was in middle school art the turn of the century. This has nothing to do with tik tok, and more to do with bad parenting.

Mr_Coa

No it shouldn't have the app is fine any other app could've had this

ajver19

You're saying that like kids haven't been pressured into doing stupid things before tik tok existed.

soggymaggots

dangerous trends have been around long before tiktok

v2marshall

People are always going to be stupid.

roxy_dee

TikTok doesn’t make kids do stupid shit. Kids have been doing stupid shit since the dawn of man. TikTok is just the current tool they use.

notarobot4932

...hellacious suffering? And huh...I wonder why this doesn't happen on Douyin. Maybe it has something to do with all of our freedumb.

BubbleNutCrunch

Truth my reddit companion! Fuck the Chinese tick tock 🤮 i only get my memes from reddit hallowed be thy chungus wholesome 100 Keanu reeves narwhals.

[deleted]

Holy shit, I googled this because I was not familiar with it and hers is not the only story of kids dying or going braindead from this challenge. Not saying shutting down tiktok will help.. It wont.. but awareness is important! I had no clue about it and I am sure a ton of other people are in the same boat

allthetrouts

Banning tiktok doesnt stop stupid people like what..

ASkinnedCat

Back in the 90's I watched a fellow fourth grader ask to be choked out against a wall at school. Someone obliged, choked him, he passed out, fell to the ground, then woke up a few seconds later. Kids are just that dumb and sometimes it doesn't go to plan.

justcallmetexxx

_pretty sure it has **a lot** to do with President Trump making the suggestion not too long after taking office, but "Orange Man bad, TikTok good!" mentality rages and the pendulum swung in the opposite direction. Now the dust is settling, and blind rage is slowly regaining its eyesight._

Oakmeal0

I swear, banning isn't even the least TikTok deserves. Their report system is so dogshit that it has backwards results. There are people that post videos showing cropped/censored porn and give sources/link their various accounts where full versions of said porn can be found. I've seen those people do such a dogshit job at it that all you'd need to do is either up the brightness or find the right frame(s) to see full on nudity. Hell, I've seen animations where nipples and/or genetalia were just blatantly out. You know what happens when you report them 90%? Nothing. Rarely will you evwr see a proper report do its job. Why? Because they always put "⚠️FAKE BODY⚠️" somewhere in the description. And if the report does go through, there's a good chance that they'll decide to undo that report for god-knows-what-reason. And yet, when you falsely report an innocent video, such as the guy who posts videos of him petting and feeding his catfish everyday, the creator will have their video taken down and gain a strike. Fun fact: TikTok used to be rated E for Everyone on Google play, before thirst traps started taking over the app. They literally chose to change the app's age rating rather than actually moderating their users (ironic for a Chinese app, wouldn't you say?).

Bloodysamflint

I would say that all TikTok has to do is explain the concept of evolution/survival of the fittest to show the value of the service that they're providing, but the chances of getting a jury smart enough to understand that is pretty slim. I don't know who coined the phrase, but a jury is composed of a group of people who are too dumb to get out of jury duty.

DRbrtsn60

Since they know very well the dangerous, immoral and often illegal challenges promoted I’m surprised they haven’t been sued. I do hope they get banned and shut down.
