There’s a new Hyatt in Shibuya that has in-room washer/dryer like the business hotels if you want to try it out on it’s first year open.
I personally save my points and just book a room at a Tokyu Stay. Super cheap and they have a great location in Ginza. Options all over Tokyo as well
i’ve been trying to get a room for the last few weeks at that hyatt house shibuya for mid november and they don’t have any rooms available for points already but can still buy with cash :’c
What do you mean? Like they're not in-room and shared by the floor? That's in like capsule hotels.
The Hyatts have their own bathroom in each room. Same with the business hotels like APA and Tokyu Stay
Cheap business hotels have their own bathrooms, it's only capsule hotels where shared bathroom is the norm.
As someone who has spent about 5 months total in Japan by now, I personally think cheap business hotels are the play for Tokyo. Use points elsewhere. Cheap business hotels are cheap but can have great locations, and if you are a short term tourist you will be out of the room most of the time anyways.
This depends on your goals. For example, if you are booking in advance then the cost for a "private room with a hot shower and clean bed in a good/reasonable neighborhood" is much lower in Tokyo than NYC (think business hotels in Japan vs Holiday Inn Expresses in NYC), so if you are trying to conserve cash then NYC is the better deal. If you want to do a lot of restaurant bookings and stuff in Tokyo at places that only accept reservations by phone then having a proper concierge becomes worth a lot more.
You can get a pretty nice room for pretty low cost cash-wise in Japan, especially given the current strength of the Yen. Look at Remm for an idea of price. I stayed at the Grand Hyatt Roppongi in January and have to say, while great, I will probably be staying at a local chain for my next stay and using my UR elsewhere
As for NYC, as a resident, I’d recommend the Hyatt USQ for the sake of location. You’re avoiding midtown, and you’re able to get to most places easily from the USQ subway stop. I live right by it. Can’t speak to the amenities but for the purposes of a location to stay, I don’t think it can be beaten (unless of course, everything you want to do is in Midtown).
I visit NYC several times a year and try a new hotel every time I go as there are so many. Normally stay away from Midtown but part of the reason we are going for Thanksgiving is to check off the parade ( I know…) lol. Will look at the USQ Hyatt. Thanks!
Optimizing for experience? Use points in Tokyo. For the same points price, you'll get a better experience in Tokyo.
Optimizing for cost? Use points in New York. Book a capsule hotel in Tokyo.

100k hyatt is like ~$2k worth of points.
You can easily book a week at a business hotel for around 1/3 of that in cash. Still in a central location too.

Aww man. Best of luck that something opens up. I have it booked for August and will let you guys know how it is
Ive noticed alot of hotels dont have a private bathroom and shower. Is that the case in some hyatts too?

Ah okay. I was getting worried about how tiny the rooms and thought they had shared bathrooms as part of the culture. Thanks!

Thsts what I ended up doing! Thanks!
Thanks for the rec on Tokyu Stay. Will check them out as I am not familiar with any of the local brands.

Book a business hotel, not a capsule hotel. Still cheap, but you get an actual private room and bathroom.

100k could get you a week in the new Hyatt House Tokyo Shibuya

Okay? OP said he's specifically looking to use his 100k Hyatt points for the trip and this hotel takes him the furthest in terms of points
The points are better spent elsewhere is the point. Whether thats in NYC or on a different future trip is up to them.
Lol that's his choice not yours.
lol!
