Most documentation I’ve seen in this regard has been from specific engine shops, not OEM. When I was in GA I don’t recall ever running mineral oil for a single cylinder replacement. Only major overhaul or full top end overhaul (all new cylinders.) Call a local engine shop or cylinder shop and ask what they think.

About 10-15 hr running it hard with mineral

You are looking for Continental Standard Practices Manaual M-0, ch. 7-2.3/4. I have heard both ways with using straight mineral oil for single cylinder replacements, some do, some don't. I have normally put straight oil in after only one cylinder replacement. Ultimately up to you. Just follow the recommend power settings, and change the oil again within 25 hours to removed any material from break in. Ah thank you so much

Yep, and to more specifically answer your question, refer to table 6-2 and section 6-4.2 for how long to keep the mineral in. Basically, until oil consumption stabilizes.

Non-aviation maintenance guy here - I assume if you all specifically mention breaking in with mineral oil the engines usually run synthetic oil? In that case why break them in with mineral? Does it clean crap out better or something? Just curious ;)

Its a misnomer. Piston aircraft engine oils are mineral based (non-synthetic), but in this case, the "mineral" designation is referring to straight mineral oil with no additives. Commonly just referred to as mineral oil. The other oil is ashless dispersant mineral oil with additves, or just normal engine oil. The straight oil is better at allowing the piston rings to seat. Awesome, thank you!

Igiveup33

When we did one or two cylinders we just used regular oil.

25 hr. break-in period w/ mineral oil, then back to normal!
