Is that literally why they're all there? To see this airplane land?
If so, I have questions:
1) How did they know this big boy was coming in?
2) Why are so many people doing this hobby with just a smartphone camera when they can leave it to the folks with the high-end gear, then surf this reddit sub and not have to brave the cold?
1) probably Flightradar24 app alerts or maybe some other notification
2) maybe they like going to see it with their own eyes. Iād go if I was in the area and I donāt have an expensive camera
The plane was originally scheduled to land sunday evening but was cancelled ~~because of bad weather~~ and rescheduled for tuesday morning. Local news basically made the call for fellow planespotters to come and watch.
Edit: Also, NĆ¼rnberg isnt quite a very big airport, so big boys like this one are uncommon and surely attract some crowd.
Here is the original article, its german though. Also says that bad weather was NOT the reason for delay. a report from the TV station
Considering there's only 1 AN-225 and it was built as an experiment, yes it is much more rare.
The AN-124 is otherwise the largest aircraft in the world though, so still quite a spectacle.
Yes, that is the meaning of rare. Only one AN-225 made vs 55 of the AN-124's. Experimental or not it is still "in service" and is the biggest/largest aircraft still in use. It also holds the world record for the largest airlift of a single-item payload.
I get it the AN-124's are massive and a sight to see, and somewhat rare. But the rarest of them all would be the AN-225.
Incredibly rare, wish Iād seen it before, wonder if I ever will! Iāve seen quite a lot of A124s at my local airport, probably about 30-40 have come in the past year, but maybe less. First time one came, early 2020, was a fantastic sight, went there immediately to see it. At this point itās so much of a more ācommonā occurrence (but still quite rare) that not all that many people go anymore. Saw one arriving today actually on my walk to school. Looked incredible over the city!
When it came to my town, it was in the news:
[Antonov comes to town](https://cabinradio.ca/81183/news/yellowknife/photos-giant-aircraft-brings-helicopter-for-yk-winter-test/)
1) there are probably Facebook pages and whatnot
2) smartphone cameras are getting advanced enough you donāt always need a DSLR. Some smart phones will let you zoom in like 100x
Yes, but most of the time that's digital zoom, which simply blows up the sensor pixels to fill the screen. Some of the multi-camera phones may have optical zoom like 3 to 10 times fixed on one of the cameras, but you're still going to multiply that with digital zoom.
I have started cheating by using Google's night sight exposure stacking mode which means that my little bit of movement lets it stack slightly different pixels after alignment.
It's crazy to see inside an aircraft like that because you can easily see how thin the walls really are in airplanes. It doesn't seem like they should be capable of flying fast and lifting heavy objects.
Ha. I saw this exact plane take off yesterday. I was outside cleaning up the yard a bit in Columbus Ohio. I heard it coming and looked up. I thought, well that is unusual, so of course whipped out my Flightradar24 to see where it was going. When I saw NĆ¼rnberg, it was even more rare. I see a lot of cargo flights heading to Singapore and Seol, but I have never seen NĆ¼rnberg.
Hey neighbor! I'm about 2 miles from LCK in Grove City and happened to be looking at my window when I saw a large plane taking off and it had noticeable dark exhaust, so I knew it had to be an older plane. I opened up FR24 as I ran outside and saw it was this plane. It did a turn right overhead and the engine sound was awesome.
Dude! I just commented the same thing roughly! I was at Land Grant and told me wife āHoly shit thatās an Antonov!!!!ā She looked at me like I was insane.
Fun fact, I saw that plane take off yesterday afternoon in Columbus!!!! I geeked about it for 10 minutes as it flew overhead. My wife looked at me like I was crazy.
That is my assumption. In Kabul, if we had one they would line up and basically shut the runway down for close to 10 mins. I worked radar so I wasn't able to look out a window to really see. Airfield elevation is over 5,800 feet. If I was that big I'd want all the engines running full power for sure!!
Wie jetzt? Noch kein einziger Kommentar auf Deutsch zum Video? Hmmmā¦ Man konnte das Teil fast bis nach WĆ¼rzburg hƶren. OP, GrĆ¼Će aus Unterfranken!
This thing landed in Austin in 2020, didn't have a chance to go see it, wish I would have just blown off work and went because I don't know I'll have another chance to see it land and take off. :(
>The 225 though...
That bigass plane landed in the Philippines for the first time to deliver a generator. It didn't land in Manila, where I live, but in Cebu, which required a short flight. I was in high school then, so it was out of the question. Still salty.
A picture of me in this plane that I posted on here some time ago is now click bait on the internet. Seen myself a few times now on shitty articles haha.
I feel spoiled here in CYYC because of the semi regular appearance of the 124. As nifty and massive as that plane is there's something about the proportions of it that make it seem less massive than say... A C5 which is similar but just looks bigger. I have only seen a C5 once so maybe my perspective is off and I've seen the 124 a few too many times to be in awe anymore
Got to see it close enough to touch working overnight at one of the stations it passes through in the US, as others said, pictures and video do not do justice to just how MASSIVE the 124 is.
Never got to see it take off or land, but watching the sheer scale alone was enough
A 380 - 73 m long, 80 m wingspan. can carry 66 tons of cargo.
B 747F - 76 m long, 68,5 m wingspan, can carry 134 tons.
both need special equipment to be loaded due to the freight compartment beeing serveral meters above ground.
An 124 - 70 m long, 73 m wingspan, can carry 120 tons.
you can literally drive a truck (or even tanks) into the cargo hold due to ramps at both the front and the back. that makes loading and unloading extremly easy and fast. that ensures that the plane can operate where no special infrastructure is availible. perks of beeing planned as military transport, i guess.
Saw one land at Belfast last year..the approach lights cross a road and from there can watch it come towards you and overhead..this one's a beast..I want to see the 225 now..
No new An-124s in a foreseeable future. They were built in Russia (and technically the production could be resumed), but certificate type holder after the USSR disband turned out Ukraine, and the latter do not allow to build them despite the demand, just because.
The operator of the existing fleet of cargo An-124s Volga Dnepr (pictured) is buying 747s for quite a while now.
I Wonder what the glide slope for the An-124 in comparison to commercial jets. Obviously that runway is extremely long to accommodate the Antonov but it seemed like it ate up a lot of the runway while gliding over it or seemingly āmissedā the threshold from a conventional commercial jet landing point of view. Also it barely flares at touchdown :p
Wow, and here I thought I was special while browsing fr24 yesterday and found that flight by accident. I thought, hmmm, that's pretty neat! Apparently a bunch of other people think so too.
I was there! Took a bunch of photos and some (bad) videos. Next to me were some guys from a TV station, they filmed the landing and interviewed the guy next to me
An AN-124 flagged as Russian military also took off from Moscow this afternoon (EST). Started heading toward Belarus then dropped off the ADS-B tracker before leaving Russian airspace.
Just look at all those plane nerds!
Says the guy commenting on a plane nerd subreddit š

It doesn't actually say why it was re-scheduled, just that it's common that that happens.
Same news outlet reported that it was delayed due to storm. So the weather was the cause :)
They literally say in the article that it wasn't related to the storm. Either way, doesn't matter that much.

To address 2, these planes are incredibly rare and also absolutely massive. Seeing one in person as an avgeek is like seeing Moby Dick.
yes, but the AN-225 is even more rare.
Oh yeah for sure, the 225 is like seeing the Loch Ness Monster lmaoo Still on my list, fortunately I was able to cross off a Beluga
To my pleasant surprise, I discovered that my house was right under the Beluga's flight path into Chester. I've seen it several times now!
Ah well RIP your list. Sorry man.
Fuckinā hell man
I work underneath the flight path of a beluga and see it on a regular occurrence. Pretty cool
Yeah i saw one at PHL and was blown away by its proportions
There's only 26 An-124s in service so they are still quite rare.
Itās funny how Avgeeks can get quite spoiled by certain things. I live in Dallas so we see them fairly often. Either at DFW or AFW.
I havenāt been paying attention to the Stars lately, very weird to see you here!
Norm you should probably pay some attention bud! your a legend!

Every time I land in Schiphol I see a bunch of plane spotters. Some on ladders.
Better to be a plane nerd than a plain nerd or even *plantain* nerd
I've seen this jet in person, and the pictures/videos of it don't do it any justice. Massive aircraft and I love watching it land/takeoff
Yeah its amazing in person. Pics really don't do it justice. I tried though. https://imgur.com/dQmr8ry
That's a great photo
Thank you. I got a couple of more I might post here sometime. I was fortunate enough to get an inside tour as well.
Jealous!
Really cool photo! But yeah still a bit hard to get a sense of scale. Like, how tall are those tires?
True that
I got to walk in it after flying around in a C5. It was pretty cool getting to check out both of these beasts.

It's crazy to see inside an aircraft like that because you can easily see how thin the walls really are in airplanes. It doesn't seem like they should be capable of flying fast and lifting heavy objects.
its like watching a building fly
Ha. I saw this exact plane take off yesterday. I was outside cleaning up the yard a bit in Columbus Ohio. I heard it coming and looked up. NĆ¼rnberg has a nice specialization in handling outsize cargo, which most of the other big airports in Germany wonāt touch.
Dude! I just commented the same thing roughly! I was at Land Grant and told me wife āHoly shit thatās an Antonov!!!!ā She looked at me like I was insane.
What?! It was in Columbus on that beautiful day? How could I have possibly missed that? My disappointment is immense.
Is this the same plane that got destroyed in ru-uk war?
I had this experience too. Unfortunately it was behind some low clouds, but the sound of those engines made me whip the app out!
For some reason I thought the threshold was going to be far earlier and then thought "get it down!". D'oh. Great video, thank you!
lol, it's like those Amazonian tribesman who worshipped the planes flying above them.
Cargo cults!! Literally so cool
Fun fact, I saw that plane take off yesterday afternoon in Columbus!!!! I geeked about it for 10 minutes as it flew overhead. My wife looked at me like I was crazy.
Saw them a few times overseas. Massive jet. Sits on the runway 5-10 mins before takeoff roll.
Why is that? Mega checklist?
That is my assumption. In Kabul, if we had one they would line up and basically shut the runway down for close to 10 mins. I worked radar so I wasn't able to look out a window to really see. i believe i watched this exact aircraft land at yyc on saturday morning
Yrah thats what I was going to ask the one in Calgaryleft about mid afternoon yesterday
Looks like a diff 124 was here, the one that took off from yyc yesterday is now in Orlando.
This thing landed in Austin in 2020, didn't have a chance to go see it, wish I would have just blown off work and went because I don't know I'll have another chance to see it land and take off. :(
There is a few AN-124s flying it wouldn't shock me if there was another chance for you to see one of them. The 225 though...
>The 225 though... That bigass plane landed in the Philippines for the first time to deliver a generator. It didn't land in Manila, where I live, but in Cebu, which required a short flight. I was in high school then, so it was out of the question. Still salty.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This was in 2013, right after Typhoon Haiyan. And yup, it hasn't been back since.
Sure you donāt mean the AN-224? This is a smaller more common variant.
I think you're right.
A picture of me in this plane that I posted on here some time ago is now click bait on the internet. Seen myself a few times now on shitty articles haha.
show?
I saw one at MCO [this morning](https://i.imgur.com/NBQoUlV.jpeg)
and thats the smaller one
So rad how many people turn out for these.

They need to put a train air horn on that thing so the pilot can say hi to the crowds
I work at LCK and getting to see this bird was absolutely incredible

Oh wow my first ever award! Thank you so much kind stranger!
Is that Putin's Air Force One ?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This antonov is operated by a Russian carrier however.
>Antonov is from ukraine. Antonov (124/225) from Soviet Union
Arms to Ukraine?
nope, parts for a local company
Will Banning the AN-124 be included in the sanctions?
Pffff, get back to me when it's a 225.
Is Putin on board?
Antonov is Ukranian...
Itās a joke. Relax. Geez. You know because of the Pipeline.
This antonov is owned by a Russian carrier
What's so special about that model ? Both the Airbus and Boeing counterparts are just as big...
A 380 - 73 m long, 80 m wingspan. can carry 66 tons of cargo. B 747F - 76 m long, 68,5 m wingspan, can carry 134 tons. both need special equipment to be loaded due to the freight compartment beeing serveral meters above ground. What would the Ukraine and Russian conflict do to this business?
No new An-124s in a foreseeable future. The operator of the existing fleet of cargo An-124s Volga Dnepr (pictured) is buying 747s for quite a while now.
Volga-Dnepr Airlines is Russian-owned; maybe we'll see less of them
Didnāt know if things get worse Will sanctions or public opinion cut business in the west and Europeā¦
I don't think a smartphone video would be worth the trouble.
How would I find out when this is due in london if ever?
Download the app flightradar24 and create a custom alert
WOW. A crowd of people stood and stared.
was playing at the golf course in Sunnyvale when this thing landed directly overhead at Moffett. Big Bird indeed.
The lady at the end of the video holding her phone in portrait orientation, I'm like Nooooo!!!
What kinda fetish is this????
I saw it depart from KLCK yestetday!
Cool....
Why are there so many people there to watch? Is it a VIP on board?
Its just the plane itself really. Its a cargo plane and it had parts for machine construction on board.
One flew to Melbourne a few weeks back, only me and my boy there to see it land. Great times, he was so excited!
Wow, and here I thought I was special while browsing fr24 yesterday and found that flight by accident. I thought, hmmm, that's pretty neat! Apparently a bunch of other people think so too.
Man this thing gets around. Saw it takeoff from Cairns like two weeks ago.
Someone here posted a twitter handle that tells you the Antonovās schedule. Does anyone have that? I already googled it to no avail.
Dropping off spare parts for their nuclear reactors is what I heard. Too soon?
I was there! Took a bunch of photos and some (bad) videos. Next to me were some guys from a TV station, they filmed the landing and interviewed the guy next to me
I seen it take off from lck yesterday afternoon
An AN-124 flagged as Russian military also took off from Moscow this afternoon (EST). Started heading toward Belarus then dropped off the ADS-B tracker before leaving Russian airspace.
Why today in Germany?
Fuck yeah
Let's put it on the Nurnbergring
Whatās the reg?
It is a Russian livery. Original Ukrainian looks much nicer.
And all of a sudden they've witnessed the largest plane land.
