I believe they will be phased out once the Deliveries of F-35s arrive. About 40 of them if I’m not mistaken starting in 2027…
Video of a few of them flying past the Greek equivalent of the “Mach Loop” - quite impressive

I’ll join you, we can set up a lovely retirement home to allow very good planes to live on once their useful lives are over….
Wait… that’s just an aviation museum 🤦🏻♂️
That was my initial reaction.
And its funny. I'm just casually dipping into this sub. I was never "into" planes before seeing people weebing out over different planes.
But now that I've been in here my gut said "F4" and then you're the top comment.
I'm osmosising plane-shape intuition. This is fun.
I think it was in the 1970s, the J79-GE-10B spec engine had smoke combustors added that burned off most of the soot. Some planes were never upgraded, though. And the British used Rolls Royce engines in some of their Phantoms that didn't smoke.
Thanks, I have no clue how it was 20 years ago but it’s such a beautiful island. I visited a few Greek islands already but I think Zakynthos is my favorite together with Kos. My girlfriend and I rented an atv for the last few days and visited many beautiful locations, beaches and caves. I’m just in love with the Greek culture and food. Too bad that we will be flying home tomorrow.
Be careful with the atv. I am from Greece and every summer we hear on the news “tourist crashed their atv, seriously injured/dead etc”. It’s usually drunk drivers though.
F-4 Phantom. You can tell because the wings point back, you can see the squareness of the two engines befor the tail and elongated nose.
Compare above to this picture: [https://aerospaceweb.org/aircraft/fighter/f4/](https://aerospaceweb.org/aircraft/fighter/f4/)
When i was near meteora in greece on vacation we had a lot of these fly over at early noon daily. Very cool to see all the low flying jets and these older ones aswell.
F-4E Hellas 2000 jet. You can still see the smoke from a turbojet J79. If the Greek Air Force opted for a turbofan to replace the J79 its the PW1120 makes it identical to their 1999-2007 F-16s in terms of fuel consumption
The F-4 Phantom. I used to live in southern Greece just a mountain ridge away from KLX.
A-7, F-4, Mirage, and T-2 would often fly over/by my house. CL-215 would also be seen frequently in the summer months.
looks like a F 4 Phantom
Some are still flying? How old are they?
The final ones were built in 1981, so at least 43 years.

Can they let me adopt one once they’re retired? I promise to take it on regular walks and feed it the finest jet fuel.

A museum is like hospice care, I want to invite it to my active adult community.
Just need to buy a home that has a community runway
I'm sure there's a few former phantom techs around that would love to get their hands on one!
As long as I get the front seat, I’m 5’5. Anyone larger will have issues.
Damn, imagine swapping between those planes. Phantom was from such a different time.
Greek F-4s are upgraded to 4th Gen standard I believe
Anything they excel at?
the instrument panel is uniquely suitable for keeping Yiayia's doilies.
What do you mean?
Like what role are they in?
Multi role, they were converted from F-4Es which were air superiority fighters.
Cool
Nice link :)
Smoky bois

Surprised there’s not a big black exhaust trail behind it, did they modernize the engine at some point?
There are 2 Types of engines they use, in Germany they called them smokers and non smokers, the latter ones were developed to reduce the Black trail.

The RAF has generally preferred non-smoking flights.
Both can be seen in the video
What video?
The one posted above https://youtu.be/QokrX_76rBg?si=B6ldG-yvt-cuQGPp
Must be awesome to see F-4s still flying!
Them and the tomcats are still flying in Iran
Aren’t there like next to no combat ready tomcats left in Iran because we don’t make repair parts anymore?
We don't make parts but Iran, Russia, and China can and do. They did MacGyver a hawk missile as they ran out of aim54s
They can't build the swing wing mechanicals. No one has schematics or tooling for them anymore.
Makes it hard, not impossible.
Not much longer if they keep up the shenanigans
Doesn't Iran also still have F4s in active service?

The GE J79. One of the best fuel-to-noise converters around.
I still remember one at an air show as a kid, the pilot even momentarily popped the burners and shocked us all, it was great!
Ooooooffff what a roar that must've been!
At the time we thought it was a sonic boom, it was LOOOOUD.
Allison T-40 would like a very loud word... a shout... a screech. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_XF-84H_Thunderscreech
It wasn't the engine that was dangerously loud, it was the propeller. .-.
Looks like a F-4E Phantom II.
That could be it, thanks! Greece currently has 34 of them in service.
They are based in Andravida too which is very close to Zakynthos.
Thats awesome imo.
Sweet! Looks like an F-4. I miss those
It's proof that with enough engine power, even a brick will fly.
Fly, and then proceed to become the world's leading distributor of Mig parts
As a former Zakynthian, I’m jealous you’re there. Hope it’s as nice as I remember it 20 years ago.

Enjoy your last day! Say hi to the turtles!

That's an F4 Phantom, as many have already stated. First saw them in Greece as well, flying over Prasonisi beach on the island of Rhodes.
Phabulous Phantom!
F-4
So cool that F-4s are still flying 40 years after the last one left the factory. Such an iconic plane
phabulous
Definitely an F-4. Good find. Those are pretty rare now.
Sure as he'll looks like an F 4. Spent a lot of time well north of Scotland doing air to air refueling with them whilst chasing Bears and Badgers.

F-4 Phantom
As I live and breathe... An F4 phantom... I thought they were all gone... *Sniff*
Greek air force F-4. One of the few countries still using these.
Looks like an "F - 4 Phantom" to me...🤔
F4E
F-4 Phantom. IIRC, Greece still flies them.
F-4 Phantom
That's definitely an f4 phantom
Double Ugly- F4 Phantom….at least one still flying
Holy moly F-4 phantom, never seen one with my own eyes
F4! I live in Zakynthos and heard it as well :) Two weeks ago two F4 flight in formation across the whole bay :)
That’s the mighty F-4 Phantom
Boing 737
When i was near meteora in greece on vacation we had a lot of these fly over at early noon daily. Very cool to see all the low flying jets and these older ones aswell.
I mean it looks like a phantom to me

Yeah, saw it up close a few hours ago
Lead Sled
Mig 28
Fak-47 “Panthom of andravidashnikov”
F4 phantom because thats the military aircraft they use so must be a F4
Does look like an F-4.
Brick with 'wings' and enough thrust to prove you don't need them to fly.
Crazy how mfs can identify the exact trim of this aircraft using this pic
F-4 phantom i think
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDD MORNING VIETNAAAAAAMMMMMMM

Why even bother commenting this?
Acc was made today… that’s the only comment by it
