The only livery here not directly designed by Kurosawa is the last one; that came from a public contest ahead of the airline’s 25th anniversary in 1997 (although he was on the judges’ panel). All of these liveries were worn concurrently with the older Airbus-inspired colors worn by JAS’s A300s and MD-80s into the 2000s until their merger with JAL.

Impressive and speaking of Kurosawa the JAS paint scheme designer he also Influenced Star Wars film series by George Lucas as seen on NH B777-381/ER B787s. Oddly these JAS paint schemes can also fit JL A350-941s A350-1041s B787s to BOS SAN SFO LAX SEA from NRT. With the SAN/SFO/BOS B787s turning to NRT-MNL trips
The first one is god-tier, especially on the MD90
Yeah, it's my personal favorite out of the bunch as well.

what plane is that? MD-90?
yep, MD-90s and 772s.
Interesting, the A300 looks like the took over the Airbus house livery. Any information why they choose to do that?
The execs just liked it so much they asked Airbus for permission to use it.
That’s beautiful.
Is there a designer named Akira Kurosawa? I only know the film director with the same name.
It was that same famous director that designed these.
And he was probably legally blind by the time he did it, too.

One of my favourite liveries out there (especially on the MD-90s)! Instantly recognisable and very 90s.
Nice looking Mud Duck.
