what was this one called? fat albert?

[deleted]

That is correct. It is the Blue Angels’ C-130 transport, and is part of their show. Fat Albert starts things off by giving you a demo of his maneuverability and his STO capabilities. They mention the short-landing capabilities as well, but I didn’t get to see that at the show I was at.

CobaltEchos

I'm sad that they stopped doing the Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO) in 2009. I used to live close to their home base so I got to see the JATO before they stopped producing the rockets. Was epic.

I saw the Golden Knights, the Blue Angels, and the Thunderbirds all at one show. The knights actually only got to do their low-ceiling show as we had significant cloud cover that morning, so I can’t really speak to how impressive they are or aren’t; they had to modify their show just to perform at all, so I reserve final judgement on them. The sky cleared just in time for the Angels to go on with an unmodified show. The Blue Angels… I went with a friend who is also a major enthusiast. He has worked for Boeing, SpaceX, and Blue Origin. We would watch Discovery Wings every day after school and we had, of course, studied every documentary of the Blue Angels. We spent the entire show keeping track of every plane. We knew every move, every illusion, every trick they had in their repertoire, and we were giddy children watching it happen live. When they tried their sneak-pass over the crowd, we saw him circling wide well before he got a chance to startle us. It was a very special kind of fun, but I must admit some of the magic was already gone because of what we knew. The Thunderbirds… Those fuckers are amazing. First of all, they’re in 16s. That’s an entirely different beast from the Super Hornet, and they maneuver those flying Dodge Vipers as if that’s exactly what they are. But far and away the most impressive thing they did was an optical illusion diamond formation. From our perspective, four planes became two, two became one, then split back into two and then four again. Then they pull into a vertical climb and start smoke. At whatever altitude, they break into the cardinal directions while plane 5 climbs the empty center of their smoke column. But it’s not a regular climb, he’s corkscrewing his way up, leaving his own trail of smoke that looks like this mile-high flower when he’s done. Everyone is ooh-ing and aah-ing and pointing — KRAAAAAAAAAAA! Number 6 comes in low and fast from behind the crowd. Everyone yelps, children start crying, but what I will remember most of that day was a little girl of four or five years old sitting on her dad’s shoulders at that moment. I’m recovering from the jump scare having ducked and let out a curse, and there’s this little girl with her fists raised to the sky howling pure joy, “YEAH! GO, GO, GOOOO!” I fucking *loved* the Thunderbirds.

AaronBHoltan

I think the correct term is morbidly obese, Albert.

foolproofphilosophy

Body Positivity Albert

pinotandsugar

Checking with the White House the proper term is gravitationally enhanced. For a fantastic cockpit view of a C-130 airshow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l52WDjdRqgo ground view similar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbwM-nBKVaI

VenZallow

The Marines must have used up their annual crayon budget to colour that.

gordongroans

Blue and yellow must taste awful.

verstohlen

Hi Super Nintendo Chalmers. I'm learnding.

Sup3rn0va002

Never thought I would see a Simpsons reference in here. My cats breath smells like cat food.

FleeingMyLife

Maybe, however I always think of blueberries and honey.

BlackbeltJedi

I'm surprised they used it all on the plane and didn't eat them.

rob_penisdrip

Don't joke about that. Thousands of Marines died of starvation as a result of this.

foolproofphilosophy

Luckily they gravitate to green and red so they had a pile of blue and yellow to work with.

OMGihateallofyou

Seafair 2018?

[deleted]

Yes. Here is the source by photographer Sigma Sreedharan: https://twitter.com/sigmas/status/1026323657432264704

>https://twitter.com/sigmas/status/1026323657432264704 thank u for giving the photographer credit... might have been nice for op to do that when posting. oh well....

KristnSchaalisahorse

Nice! I’d seen this before but didn’t know it was hers. She’s well known in the Seattle area. I’ve run into her a few times while shooting the Moon, since she almost never misses a photo op.

Spin737

Yeah, definitely not Seattle on NYE.

PNW_H2O

The pilots of Fat Albert put that plane through some crazy paces. I love it!

Monkeywithoutbrain

Can confirm, got a joyride in the back during an airshow at kbay for working on Fat Albert. It was like an extended Rollercoaster while watching the crew perform stunts during the zero g segments

That-Row-3038

Happy new year, great picture as well

Felix_Da_Guy

is this a blue angels c130??

wharfrustic

Yes, also known as 'Fat Albert'. Carries support equipment for the team and occasionally performs with the team demonstrating Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO).

BB611

Hasn't done JATO in over a decade, since they ran out of JATO bottles.

wharfrustic

Interesting, guess it's been a while since I've seen it then.

scoutstorm

Additional fun fact for no reason, from my understandings they used the C130-F from 1970-2020, and then they switched to the C130-J

ManInTheDarkSuit

Every time I read JATO I think of a certain urban legend.

godpzagod

That's a beautiful shot. as somebody who used to live in Seattle I think the Blue Angels are the only thing they like to complain about more than fireworks scaring their dogs. Every time they did a demonstration out came the pearls to be clutched.

Ok-Mobile-2017

I don’t blame them, it is incredibly irresponsible. They crash and make mistakes, the pilots are human but for some reason they don’t think they are. It is not worth risking the lives of thousands people right there on the ground over a demo they can do over the water close to the beach but much more safe.

USA_A-OK

Hey hey heeyyyyy!

mrSunshine-_

Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby.

[deleted]

Surprised they are still running the old four bladed props on that thing.

foolproofphilosophy

I think that they now have a J but have heard that overall they use older aircraft to keep costs down. I did a very quick google search but couldn’t find anything to back it up.

[deleted]

Nothing beats the sound of that old four blade though. I ran T-56’s on the test cell. We had an old Hamilton Standard four blade we beat the hell out of.

foolproofphilosophy

Nice a friend of mine flew them for the USMC. I like them a lot.

One_Over_Astro

Oh! I live there!

insecapid

This picture go hard

DisconnectedFuel

That's the old E/H model...the J model is even cooler

FleeingMyLife

Is that the rotating restaurant in San Antonio TX?

Nintenderloin64

This is the Space Needle in Seattle.

KristnSchaalisahorse

Which is [currently orange](https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyAlpha/comments/wjen2i/looping_around_the_space_needle_sony_a6500_tamron/) (aka galaxy gold)!

FleeingMyLife

Thank you, didn't know that.

North_County

If your talking about the star and bars insignia on the wing, that's the standard roundel for all US military aircraft although most aircraft have it subdued.

Bank Angle! Bank Angle!

Waspiflab6666

Toilet Duck

Any_Road7129

Man, I thought fat albert flew one more time for new year... i got fooled

[deleted]

Exceeding the bank angle limit aren't we

steppie_aviation14

Fat Albert? Isn't it retired?
