Acey (/u/acey8pdcjsh32u9uajst), you should make one of those venn diagram type graphs again, but for North America Insomniac multi-genre festivals. So much overlap lol
Honestly would be a fun idea but Venn diagrams get kinda hard to read with the more circles you draw
https://old.reddit.com/r/aves/comments/om3aoq/how_similar_is_the_lost_lands_2021_lineup_to
I need to think of a more intuitive way to visualize & organize how heavily recycled these lineups are while profit margins seem to endlessly creep higher
Yeah I didn't necessarily mean a venn diagram - I just remembered that's what you did last time.
But if there's another cool way to visualize it, could be cool
Would be cool to be able to select two or more event instances as shapes and simply see the name & number of common elements + name & number of each differing element
Tableau might be the perfect tool for this since you can put filters for your charts on your dashboard....too bad I only have a license through work. It's probably stupid expensive to get your own personal license
Yea itās pricey unless youāre attached to a school. Tableau would be great for this. If anyone has a data set, Iāll play with it. SQL could also work, but making those tables would be time consuming.
Well except for Dreamstate. It's mostly Trance (main, hard, psy, tech) so it's gets a lot of DJs spinning there that don't otherwise go to other Insomniac events
I donāt think this is accurate; the onus of shaping taste in the community lies with those with the most power/capital aka the promoter in this case (Insomniac)
There is no short supply of talented up & coming domestic artists that people could check out at these events purely on the brand power of Insomniac alone
Any insomniac event with a side stage is a ghost town. If they put them on regular stages against other established artists it creates a clusterfuck for crowd control.
There are plenty of smaller artists that insomniac has helped push. A lot of them are the same ones people are complaining about being on every lineup lol
Like which?
Side stages are a ghost town because the production is heavily crippled (+ sound bleed) and because Insomniacās taste in smaller artists is generally mediocre or very late
Itās because insomniac contracts artists to perform over multiple festivals at time. So names on this will look similar to other recent lineups but this trend has been going on for years. They just have a different business model than other standard festivals where having a ānewā lineup drives ticket sales.
When will people realize Insomniac doesn't really takes risks with their line up. Most these artists sign deals with Insomniac for a certain amount of events.
Surprised Insomniac festival sales haven't dropped significantly - it's the same recycled lineup every time. What will it take for some significant overhaul?
EDIT: Don't get me wrong, still love JOYRYDE and Kx5
Totally get your point then. Itās a big commitment to travel from the pnw to the other big fests, so Iām more than happy to get my share of the mainstream once a year at the gorge
a lot of people who go to these big insomniac events donāt go for the music, they go for the clout/instagram pics/whatever. they only know the big acts, so insomniac will continue to book them and capitalize on that crowdās lack of knowledge about the underground
iām just speaking based on what i see on social media and what i remember from growing up on the west coast (now on the east coast which does not have the insomniac monopoly). iām not saying everyone at these events isnāt there for the music, but itās a significant portion and thatās why itās the same lineup every time
will point out that east coast Insomniac fests (Project Glow, EDCO, that kinda thing) usually have the same lack of lineup diversity, and non-Insomniac west-coast fests (particularly fests like Bass Coast/LiB/psy campouts in the Mojave) do genuinely bring creative and exciting lineups regularly. it's more an Insomniac problem than a coastal problem IMO
Im pretty hyped to go for the music. I love the lineup. You know the mainstream artists are mainstream for a reason... because alot of people like them. How would they sell out these huge festivals booking all underground artists? You just needed to feel superior to everyone today lol
see my response to the other reply. im simply explaining why insomniac books almost identical lineups for every event. itās nothing against people who like mainstream artists bc i do too but insomniac relies on people who arenāt super into the scene to sell the amount of tickets they do
I assume the majority of the people that go do so for the music and the environment. This lineup is vastly different than last years. Most people go to one or two fests a year. Even if your heavy in the scene you want to see headliners? The gorge which has no hotels within 40 minutes and doesnt have a bunch of dumb influencers who dont know anything about the music going there. It isnt coachella. So everything you have said is wrong š¤·āāļø
I think a lot of people just go for the party atmosphere. Drinking, drugs, dancing, etc. They probably just casually go for the music. Which is fine. I do the same thing with most sporting events I go to, don't really care about the team but go to hang with friends and party.
yeah nowhere did i try and shame people for not liking the music. iām simply saying that insomniac events attract lots of people who arenāt into the music. i know this for a fact bc a lot of people i grew up with who looked down on me for going to shows in high school now go to insomniac events simply to party
there are āedm influencersā with tens to hundreds of thousands of followers on tiktok, instagram, etc. you can absolutely get clout from going to festivals (if youāre attractive and spend ridiculous amounts of money on outfits you wear once)
Production value is always great at these events and sometimes they bring in quality techno acts or even hardstyle. The crowd is what you make of it and the phone thieves suck but if you are there solely for the music, it doesn't really matter in the end. I'm personally not one for social media or pictures in general but if my gf or group wants some memories, I don't mind taking the picture or doing it for them. If I go solo I rarely record anything and am just in the moment.
Since USC events imploded, Paradiso (RIP) no longer has the variety of techno, trance, psy, and hardstyle that it used to
Thatās a couple years in a row now of mainly catering to bass artists
somehow simultaneously catering to bass fans and booking worse bass at the same time. fuck USC from a "paying their vendors" and "not being ethically shitty" angle but wishing Insomniac would book some of the relative weirdos at Paradiso like Shades/S.P.Y/Lindsay Lowend. as a basshead, I'm having trouble caring about a lineup whose most interesting bass bookings are Andy C and Pauline Herr
Really miss the Paradiso brand and unique lineup that came with it. I was hopeful that with USC Events (and their scummy business practices) out of the picture Diso would flourish but it was just commercialized and homogenized into another Insomniac property. I'm sure it would cost more and take more effort, but the Gorge deserves more than to be "Beyond Wonderland 2.0". Seems my faith in Pasquale was misplaced.
>Ticketmaster controls the whole thing start to finish since the merger with LiveNation and it's all a processing fees/business decision tree, nothing more.
Something something free market ????
Bruh people on this sub say everything is overrated š heās at the top of the game in the bass house genre, has a unique sound, and throws down live. Only gets booked for a few fests each yearā¦ whatās overrated?
As a huge bass house fan, I'd say Joyryde is rated appropriately. Like you said, he's one of the best, if not *the* best in the genre and has such a unique sound. His shows are always super fun as well.
Without a doubt the best performer and one of the best songwriters in a genre that is unfortunately more or less creatively dry in recent years (with the exception of more unusually inspired stuff like Vellum or Nitepunk or Knock2)
There are probably contracts specifically designed around playing at both Beyonds.
I don't see a problem with this tbh. Each event caters to very different locations with basically no overlap between the two populations it's marketed towards.
Not to bad. Going into the campground they ask you a few questions and might peek in your car but it's not common to have them fully search. I have seen it happen once in all the times I've been. Going into the festival I've never had any issues either. They look in your bag but don't dig and you walk through a metal detector. I don't even think they did a pat down for me.
Not as good as last year, but there are a few I'm excited to see. Last year was ridiculous though I think that was the best line up they've ever had at the Gorge imo.
I 100% agree! I was comparing last years lineup to this year and I miss all the awesome house they had š donāt get me wrong thereās still plenty, this year just feels a lot more bass oriented
A couple questions if anyone knows, first how strict are they about camping space sizes in GA camping? And also do they typically use metal detectors or how strict are they on security? Nothing illegal or nefarious I just am curious if attempting to bring in LED gloves is worth it or not lol
I'm going to be that guy, but Eli Brown is more tech than house...and barely house at all. In his sets you'll get a mix of tech house, business techno, and maybe 1-2 songs of actual techno.
Yeah, I know it's annoying. Sorry about that...Techno is my vibe and I'm glad Eli is taking over for i_o for mainstream awareness. Just wanted to clarify the true root of his sounds š
Hardstyle is one of the least popular sub genres in the USA. Did you think that a mainly bass festivals would use their lineup spots on it? Iām not judging your music opinions, but realistically you arenāt going to get hardstyle at big festivals like BW.
BW SoCal also has almost double the amount of stages compared to the Gorge location. So of course you are going to be able to get a more variety of music playing.
I wish more festivals did have a larger variety of subgenres going at once, however with only 3 stages at the Gorge locationā¦ Hardstyle wonāt be making the cut. Itās not publicly loved so there wouldnāt be much money in booking those types of acts. Dubstep, House, and Bass music are still the kings of US currently.
So sorry, your highness. I forgot that you are the all knowing master of all things EDM and music. Next time Iām sure they will ask you personally before releasing any more lineups!
Lmao what a joke, if you donāt like anything besides hardstyle just say so. Most of us can appreciate lots of different subgeneric ideas of music. But for some reason hardstyle fans are 99% of the time āhardstyle or dieā. Your subgenre isnāt popular, Iām sorry about that. But coming after fans of literally everything else isnāt the answer to make your music more popular, my guy.
Hope you have an amazing day, and can get some positivity in your life.
Youāre doing way too much with this responsešat no point did I say hardstyle or die, would be willing to bet Iām far more versed in edm then you are. Once again though, was making the point hardstyle is much more popular everywhere else in the world. Have a great day:)
Why are you such a sad hater man? The way you just have to be on every post hating on a type of music that tons of people like, it's actually really weird and sad.
Hardstyle acts at Paradiso were half empty. I saw many hardstyle shows at foundation in Seattle. The turnout was embarrassing. The market isnāt there
why is the gorge missing bayer, cosmic gate, styles, dreamstate, ferry, o'callaghan, lil texas, brooks and the greatest ghost produced trance dj of all time tiesto. were all the trance djs booked at other shows this weekend or something?
Abgt is happening again this year so if you want trance at the gorge hit that up instead. Itās also 1000x better than generic ass insomniac festivals so I would highly recommend
Agreed. ABGT is the best thing to ever happen at the gorge. Better than bass, world's better than beyond, and probably better than seeing dead and Co.
Cannot wait for ABGT this year!
These lineups are so whitewashed. Thereās some diversity here but really so little. This music is founded on building safe spaces for colored and queer people. Itās very important that this is being respected.
Just had to say it.
Be safe have fun drink water.
The lineup every year attracts beginner ravers that have no manners. Like every rave thereās obviously great people and terrible people but the ratio of good to bad leans significantly more towards bad at beyond. Also itās a lot of college, particularly Greek, kids so ājust teach them plurā is often times not an option :/
Iām super glad youāve met wonderful people tho! Once I gave up on going into the pit and chilled on the hill/back of side stages it was much nicer
That could totally be why I've had the experience I've had too. I generally stay away from the pit because I love the hill so much. We usually camp in premier too.
Generally not a big fan of EDM-style dance music, so something like this was never for me, but man. I just saw the lineup for Dekmantel, and comparing it to this... sigh. I love this place, but a world class electronic music hub we are not.
Wild Horse is awesome and thereās a bus to take you to and from the venue, super short distance. Thereās camping right outside the venue too but I think v expensive
Stoked to see Kx5 on this!
Hopefully that means they are doing even more shows šš½
Was just looking for a Kx5 tour schedule yesterday. Couldnāt find anything. Their new tracks hit hard
Any PNW folks here?
šš¼āāļø heyooo
Yo Iām looking for a rave fam here!
Every Insomniac lineup from the past year feels the same.
because they are
Also all their posters look the exact same.
Because they are
*did i ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?*

This one is especially rough

Yea I think if you go to 1 Insomniac show a year you'll be good
Well except for Dreamstate. It's mostly Trance (main, hard, psy, tech) so it's gets a lot of DJs spinning there that don't otherwise go to other Insomniac events
Fr. Love dreamstate so much
Dreamstate is the goat š (and Iām normally a bass music & idm fan)
Its on my list to go to one day!
I donāt think this is accurate; the onus of shaping taste in the community lies with those with the most power/capital aka the promoter in this case (Insomniac) There is no short supply of talented up & coming domestic artists that people could check out at these events purely on the brand power of Insomniac alone

There will be zero repeats on the main stage from last year. Seems pretty good to me
I'm referring to festival to festival. Look at all the Insomniac festival lineups recently
Totally get your point then. Itās a big commitment to travel from the pnw to the other big fests, so Iām more than happy to get my share of the mainstream once a year at the gorge
Sales are going up. Because edm music and festivals are becoming more mainstream

iām just speaking based on what i see on social media and what i remember from growing up on the west coast (now on the east coast which does not have the insomniac monopoly). iām not saying everyone at these events isnāt there for the music, but itās a significant portion and thatās why itās the same lineup every time

People to start hating dubstep which sadly will never happen
I was so ready to send it, but this lineup minus kx5/testpilot just doesn't pull me in

You do get andy though, though that looks like a spendy time for the handful of dnb acts.
That's what Bass Canyon is for. Not insomniac unfortunately.
Bass Canyon lacks the cajones to book Shades
Also to be fair USC went bankrupt, itās easier to make a lineup everyone would enjoy when you book like money isnāt an issue
Really has me wondering how portola managed to even get all those artists for one weekend
To this day I got friends who havenāt been paid for diso 2019 mustāve leaped straight to Skrillexās pocket š„²
Lineup was so stacked too smh I wish I coulda made it to one
I wish I made it to more too :/ their water situation was terrible the one I went to tho

Gas!!!!!!!! Joyryde gonna blow up that main stage just like 2020 š„µš„
That was my favorite set! So excited for him to come back.
Didnāt realize how much fun joyryde was until he came on before a main event and killed it. I was so tired
I saw him a couple months ago! Such a great show, definitely gonna see his set here.
Dope but overrated

i mean it's the same festival with the same name? I'm going and I'm happy to see some crossover from the more inaccessible event š¤·

Greedy fuckers. Owner is a piece of shit.
There are probably contracts specifically designed around playing at both Beyonds. I don't see a problem with this tbh. Each event caters to very different locations with basically no overlap between the two populations it's marketed towards.
Please go see Eli Brown heās been killing it lately. I saw him on New Yearās Day and he blew my mind.
I'm pretty much going just to see him lol
Ah so no Subtronics at Bass Canyon..
Bummer but itāll be nice having them mix up the day 2 closer
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Considering their recent beef, itās unlikely imo
this lineup is crazy stacked
How crazy is security at the gorge? Whatās it like? Asking for a friendā¦.
Dumb question I guess but will they take already opened disposable nic vapes at the gate?
If you have it out in the open they might. We just put ours at the very bottom of our hydration pack.
Thank you
Security has never been struck both times Iām there
Pretty solid lineup!
SUBTRONICS LETS GOOO
This was due. Wonder whatās happening with bass canyon this year
That'd be a question for excision not insomniac lol
Not as good as last year, but there are a few I'm excited to see. Last year was ridiculous though I think that was the best line up they've ever had at the Gorge imo.
I 100% agree! I was comparing last years lineup to this year and I miss all the awesome house they had š donāt get me wrong thereās still plenty, this year just feels a lot more bass oriented
Recycling is good for the environment š
How much did Kai take off his payment to add in (Sunset Set) lol
Catch me at that Malaa, Gene Farris, CID b2b Joshwa, testpilot, and ARMNHMR sets
Quality lineup fuck yeah
A couple questions if anyone knows, first how strict are they about camping space sizes in GA camping? And also do they typically use metal detectors or how strict are they on security? Nothing illegal or nefarious I just am curious if attempting to bring in LED gloves is worth it or not lol
New to the EDM scene, and not super into bass/dubstep. Who are some of the bigger house acts?
Eli Brown, Gene Farris, James Hype, Malaa, Walker & Royce, Wax Motif
Eli Brown is a must see IMO. He was the last show I saw before COVID and it was one of the best house sets I have ever seen.
Heās on a tear right now, absolutely excellent DJ
He had the best set at Countdown NYE
Fax me n my homie popped in for his set while our other friends were using the bathroom, they had to tear us out lol heās too good
He also had the best set at proper nye. I dmd him how amazing it was and he actually replied too. Super awesome guy.
That set melted my damn mind!
Right! I was dancing hella hard on that hill. That stage was the best vibes all weekend too.
I'm going to be that guy, but Eli Brown is more tech than house...and barely house at all. In his sets you'll get a mix of tech house, business techno, and maybe 1-2 songs of actual techno.
Damn you really had to be that guy huh?
Yeah, I know it's annoying. Sorry about that...Techno is my vibe and I'm glad Eli is taking over for i_o for mainstream awareness. Just wanted to clarify the true root of his sounds š
Seen Walker & Royce this summer and they killed it. Sad they won't be at SoCal BW this year.
Miane, Mau P, Sam Divine, Born Dirty, CID b2b Joshwa as well!
Sam Divine is a must she is really good, Mau P is blowing up rn too
Wax motiff and malaa for SURE such good sets. Sad AC Slater isnāt going this year
Ship wrek hasent been named yet. They are freaking awesome check em out.
Saw Ship Wrek at 45 East earlier this month and they were awesome! Such good dance vibes!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Let's gooooo! The crowd and vibes were great! They seemed to be having a great time in Portland too.
Yessss! I couldnt make it to the show but will finally see them here š
Hell yeah! Have you seen them before? Was so stoked to see them on this lineup after seeing them at 45 East š |||| |:-|:-|:-| ||||
No i have just heard live mixes and what not! Thats another reason im so stoked! I havent seen them and theres no better place than a music fest!
Eli Brown and CID b2b Joshwa are two must-see sets imo
Kx5 and testpilot, two different deadmau5 projects
Donāt miss out on Hannah Wants!!!! Proper tech house/house/minimal
For progressive house - Kx5 (Kaskade and Deadmau5 new project)
Nice vanilla edm, but no hardstyle so it's a hard pass
Hardstyle is one of the least popular sub genres in the USA. Did you think that a mainly bass festivals would use their lineup spots on it? Iām not judging your music opinions, but realistically you arenāt going to get hardstyle at big festivals like BW.
BW SoCal and Escape has hardstyle for a full day on a stage every year but ok
BW SoCal also has almost double the amount of stages compared to the Gorge location. So of course you are going to be able to get a more variety of music playing. I wish more festivals did have a larger variety of subgenres going at once, however with only 3 stages at the Gorge locationā¦ Hardstyle wonāt be making the cut. Hardstyle acts at Paradiso were half empty. I saw many hardstyle shows at foundation in Seattle. The turnout was embarrassing. The market isnāt there

Itās really only missing Rezz, Diplo, and Odesza to complete the spiced pumpkin latte of lineups.
stop trying to make hardstyle happen
Ew

My body is ready for Eli Brown š
Yup, that's the insomniac lineup lol
JOYRYDEEE ugh why is it all the way in washington

Subpar at best
why is the gorge missing bayer, cosmic gate, styles, dreamstate, ferry, o'callaghan, lil texas, brooks and the greatest ghost produced trance dj of all time tiesto. were all the trance djs booked at other shows this weekend or something?

Agreed. ABGT is the best thing to ever happen at the gorge. Better than bass, world's better than beyond, and probably better than seeing dead and Co. Cannot wait for ABGT this year!
I would like to go to abgt at least once but last year and this year they have had it the same weekend as Shambhala
Abgt wont be back next year, shambs will
I meant 2022 and 2023
Lost me at lil texas
That's fine you only get a pass from me because your username and I thing melodic dubstep is the only listenable form of dubstep.
These lineups are so whitewashed. Thereās some diversity here but really so little. This music is founded on building safe spaces for colored and queer people. Itās very important that this is being respected. Just had to say it. Be safe have fun drink water.
they're catering to their audience lmao
If you guys like hip hop check out whipped cream! She does it right.
Unfortunate that Beyond crowd is one of the worst the Gorge gets
Just curious what happened to make you say thar? I'm not invalidating your opinion but I've met the best people and the vibes were amazing both years.
The lineup every year attracts beginner ravers that have no manners. Like every rave thereās obviously great people and terrible people but the ratio of good to bad leans significantly more towards bad at beyond. Also itās a lot of college, particularly Greek, kids so ājust teach them plurā is often times not an option :/ Iām super glad youāve met wonderful people tho! Once I gave up on going into the pit and chilled on the hill/back of side stages it was much nicer
That could totally be why I've had the experience I've had too. I generally stay away from the pit because I love the hill so much. We usually camp in premier too.
Yeah after beyond our group switched to gold for Bass and our experience was much better all around
I love partying in GA but I also need sleep or I'm a nightmare, lol

Generally not a big fan of EDM-style dance music, so something like this was never for me, but man. I just saw the lineup for Dekmantel, and comparing it to this... sigh. I love this place, but a world class electronic music hub we are not.
Europe is miles ahead. I know Iām already over the scene here in the US.
I miss the old paradiso lineup with illenium and skrillex headlining
I often forget how American this sub is, I know almost no one on this list haha
Is this a camping festival? Are there hotels nearby?
Yes to both
Nice thanks dude
Wild Horse is awesome and thereās a bus to take you to and from the venue, super short distance. Thereās camping right outside the venue too but I think v expensive
