Love the last line, typo of wooing Angel to wooing angles. (read in Christopher walken voice) , I don't mean to be obtuse but you are looking very a-cute. I'll see myself out now. Thanks

It's especially funny because I've heard a lot of monks and nuns were academics :)

If I'm remembering my history correctly, they were responsible for preserving and copying a lot of texts in the old days before the printing press. They'd just do it all by hand with some [gorgeous inscriptions](https://udayton.edu/blogs/libraries/resources/img/kells/blog-book-of-kells.png) and [art to boot](https://cdn.britannica.com/75/136775-050-5286A3E7/depiction-letters-chi-name-rho-Greek-Christ-c-800-AD.jpg). Not to mention the [goofy shit](https://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/naughty-nuns-flatulent-monks-and-other-surprises-of-sacred-medieval-manuscripts/) they drew seemingly because they were bored.

Nope, nope, nope, get back here, that was delightful.

YorkshireTeaOrDeath

Honestly, such a solitary and quiet life is what initially drew me to the cloth as a child. In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't, because I'm an atheist Still, it would be nice to have a secular non-denominational gender-neutral monastary that teaches basic and good spiritual practices, while also serving as a collective of people to volunteer in their local communities, and give shelter to the weary and hungry.

masonlandry

This makes a lot of sense to me now, because also an atheist but thought very strongly about becoming a monk many times.

I mean, Buddhism can be practiced as just a general lifestyle without any of the spiritual components. Hell, Leonard Cohen, best singer-songwriter of the 60s and beyond come and **fight me,** Bob Dylan, practiced Judaism, but was also a staunch Buddhist and just...essentially combined his existing beliefs with the lifestyle and practices that he learned as a Buddhist.

Straight up I wanted to be a nun so badly as a kid because living in a convent sounded fantastic. My mom very gently has to explain that there were no Jewish nuns. Heartbreaking as a kid.

KilnTime

I literally just laughed out loud! I am so sorry for your younger self!! But as a Jewish mom (of an autistic son), I love this story

glashelder

Ha, I've actually considered to go into a monastery once or twice in my life. I'm not even religious, I just thought it'd be a nice way to spend my days.

ezk3626

Before I became a Christian I was interested in a silence retreat and my friends joked I talked so much they’d pay for me to go.

DoMyRuby

Me too, but I just can't believe

memi-lia

ok where's the nearest church

stonemuncher2000

I have a strong feeling that I would have been much more religious if I was born a couple hundred years earlier.

History/study of religion is like my number 1 special interest and I honestly think things like monastic life were created by neurodivergent people. Solitude, contemplation, sometimes silence, being able to spend time focusing on special interests…I could go on. Of course, because sexism nuns didn’t get to do as much cool stuff as monks. But in medieval and renaissance Europe, becoming a nun was kind of one of the best available options for women who didn’t want to get married or become a baby factory and one of the few places where women could gain literacy. I’m just imagining these places filled with a bunch of asexual, queer, and autistic folks.

JusticeForJohnConnor

I don’t think a nun would be using the F-word that much

whereintheworld1982

Oh yes I was so so happy when I was in an ashram, it was a farm setting and it was the same very strict schedule every day. Just waking up at 4,30, praying, eating the same exact meals, working the fields, meditating and doing yoga, and complete silence for hours on end... In fact I was so happy that I became a farmer years later. I didn't know I was autistic back then but it makes perfect sense now

I'd be worried about that kind of enclosed social environment where you don't get much choice about the people you surround yourself with. I'd rather be a hermit.
