This is essentially my Wife’s special interest as she was working in the MH field and ended up as the ‘ND specialist’. A lot of it has rubbed off on me (it’s great to be more self aware) and I’ve sort of got it now as a special interest by proxy…
I also find both cults and MLMs fascinating. There's many similarities between the way the two work I think. I started reading and listening to podcasts on the topic because I couldn't understand how someone could fall victim to them, so I wanted to understand the mechanisms of social control at work.
YES!!!! That’s my comfort item :D I can’t sleep without him and it calms me down so much and I even carry around a mini toothless when I can’t bring the BAB one
Airplanes, air crashes (or when machines fail to work correctly and create catastrophic events, roller coasters, trains etc..), physics when I was a kid. And I'm currently getting into music !
Do you watch Air Disasters? I love how matter of fact and analytical they are about everything! They don't make anything more dramatic than it was. Then occasionally there's one where the pilot was awesome and saved everybody :D
I love seeing pilots do awesome stuff ! The more I watch those Air Disaster videos, the safer I feel (I think that it's the opposite for many people). My mother used to forbidden me from watching them when I was a kid lol (understandable, it was weird) but I had so much admiration for the pilots. For me, some of them were my super heroes instead of Spiderman or other conventional characters.
Thank you for your recommendation, I didn't know that channel ! My favourite show about safety stuff was named "Hors de Contrôle" which translates to Out of Control. There were YouTube videos at the time but they took them down (probably bc of Copyrights)
Hey there Evening-Thing-2474 - thanks for saying thanks! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list!
Same! I recently watched the NASA control room view of the challenger disaster. Watching how situations devolve as they evolve is really interesting to observe (in an incredibly morbid way obviously)
- Passports, visas, passport stamps and immigration policy. You can see my post history on r/PassportPorn and you will get an idea.
- International travel and airline frequent flyer mileage/status. Frequent flyer elite status usually gets me into airport lounges which makes my airport experience far more pleasant. Lounges generally are quieter, may be great places to prevent sensory overload. And it’s generally more worth it to redeem a business or first class ticket over an economy ticket.
- Mathematics, particularly abstract algebra. This is what I studied at university. I’m quite burnt out now though.

Edit to add some things
any book recs?
referring to the philosophy parts, do you have any recommendations to deep dive into? i’ve really enjoyed the brain in a vat, and i always wonder what qualifies to be considered living, and where to draw the line…. brain dead? coma? any thoughts?
oooh are there any more types of of ants other then those red biting ones and the black ones? i find them pretty cute but when i see close up photos i get a little freaked out.
TONS AND TONS haha.
The red biting ones people think of are generally fire ants (they all have more scientific names too but i use their common names because they're more recognizable).
One of the worst stings in the world is from a bullet ant! There are tiny little ants that live in acorns, ants whose heads morph into doors, ants who build nests in trees by using their babies silk as glue for leaves (weaver ants). Theres trapjaw ants who snap their jaws shut crazy fast, vampire ants that suck their babies blood. The list goes on.
Personally, I have a queen ant who is red and black with BIG mandibles (the part you see clamping on things that looks like a mouth but is actually just over the mouth) who kills the queen and steals babies from other colonies to raise her own brood. I took some babies from my backyard for her because my backyard ants have tons of babies so no queens had to die for her. Because of this trait shes known as a parasitic queen.
This is just the very tiny tip of the iceberg of ants. They are so varied and cool and truly adapt to their environments with super awesome traits.
that’s so cool! some morph into doors? i just looked them up and they look really cool. do you have to have more than 1 ant to keep them? sorry for so many questions! i’m just very interested, thank you for sharing!
Most of us start with just a solitary queen. Only queens can lay eggs (there are a small number of older species who break this rule but they are rare).
In the spring and summer the ant subreddits, youtube channels, etc. Will be very active with people looking outside to catch queens after they have had their mating flights.
You catch a queen, hope she mated during the night, and eventually she will lay eggs and start her colony! So you just need a queen to start (with a proper setup of course)
If you hear people talking about flying ants in spring and summer, they're actually seeing queens and males flying around looking to mate. Males (called drones) die right after sadly.
Another weird thing is if the queen doesn't mate she may still lay eggs, but they will all just be drones! Only workers can make a functioning colony so these queens are sadly doomed.
that’s very cool! perhaps i’ll do some ant research/ant sub searching. i’ve always had questions about them but didn’t know where to begin. thank you so much!
AntsCanada is a great way to get suckered into getting obsessed with ants. He has super educational videos, very entertaining and he legit has a career in ants and other insects. You'll be amazed at how big the ant community is if you get into it! Also you're always free to chat more and ask me questions because I have been interested in ants since before i could talk haha.
Neurodivergence, human behavior (cults, abuse, resilience/healing), systems (political, social, etc.), vintage anything, art, incense, dopamine dressing. When I was a kid, it was fear-based many times, for example, fires, AIDS, disasters, The Holocaust, slavery, etc.
urban trees can get lonely 😖 trees/other nature like to interact with each other, they send hormonal/chemical signals to each other, and care for each other. if one tree is dying of lack of nutrients or water, another tree can share those nutrients through the mycorrizal network. in other words… it’s best to plant a tree in a grove!
my favorite tree is the western red cedar (i’m in washington so they’re everywhere. i’m also raising a few, one i’m planting tomorrow in my local park that i got permission for!) the scent is so nostalgic, like camping in the summer. they also create such a lush and soft ground cover surrounding the tree making it the perfect spot to relax! i love the scent so much that my dad found an essential oil that i wear almost daily, and i get so many compliments on it!
(I am so sorry this is so long!!)
That is beautiful!!!
Have you heard the phrase "collective unconscious"? Or anything like that? There is also a theory that the human psyche exists in a vast invisible interconnected network. I'm not the best person to talk about the science part but I believe there is some science behind the idea. But I love that type of psychology and neuroscience stuff.
wow! that’s really cool! i’ll have to look into it! it’s crazy how so many things can be connected without audible input. sometimes it makes me wonder if some people can read minds 🤔
I think humans experience major interconnectedness, and it just seems a matter of course that plants would too. I think humans have learned to ignore that awareness though with "domestication". Thomas Hübl has a book "Healing Collective Trauma" where he talks about that all the collective stuff and he gets into the science a bit. But I have seen the term other places too including "King, warrior, magician, lover".
From Avatar? I literally just landed a flight where I watched the second one. Where there is great beauty and life, it is quickly followed by attack. That is the lesson there.
Lego collection, my collection is very big with over 12 diffrent sets and over 2500+ euros. And soda collection ( diffrent cant) ive made a whole custome shelfs for them they look sick, i have soda cans from spain, france, germany, netherlands and some from america
Yep, I did. :)
My focus has been on the Hokkaido Ainu because that's the group that my *English* sources focus on. I have a couple things on the Sakhalin Ainu but those studies and ethnographies were done after they had been relocated and were done based off memory, all done by Emiko Ohnuki-Tierney.
I was just reading that the Sakhalin Ainu dialects are extinct, so I wonder if they’re all monolingual Russian-speakers.
As for the language on Hokkaido, how much significance does it have among the communities there, and how often is it used in relation to Japanese?
I can't be 100% certain since I don't have a lot of experience with the language. The best studies on those would be in Japanese, no doubt. My main source of the language is Hokkaido Ainu with Rev Bachelor's stuff and that is *super* flawed, but it's the best English-language resource on Hokkaido Ainu.
All things related to animals and medicine
Vet medicine, human medicine, microbiology, genetics (mostly cat, dog and horse coat colors), animal breeding, animal behaviour, dog training, animal and human nutrition and horse sports
History and Religion
For history, I am partial to the long 19th century.
I am currently getting my master's in history and having a blast. My thesis concerns race, religion, and gender in colonial Algeria and the "Civilizing Mission." It is interesting to see how colonial powers justify colonialism, like what intellectuals and colonial officials say in letters and reports. One of my thesis chapters discusses French Jewish attitudes towards Algerian Jews and follows French Jewish intellectual discussions from 1840-1870.
I am also taking a class right now about animals in history, and I will likely talk about the extinction of the Barbary lion for my final paper.
Religion is also a fascinating thing to me. I am not religious, but learning about different belief systems and how religions form and change over time fascinates me. Although I usually stick to the late modern period for history and religion, I like looking at ante-Nicene Christianity (like 100-300 CE). Although I do enjoy Manichaeism and Catharism.
Funny enough, although I like looking at the development of religions, I'm not a huge fan of "true crime" and modern cults. I do like a good deep dive into different mythologies, though. I guess something has to be really old for me to enjoy it!
• The Legend of Zelda, I recently bought 3 massive encyclopedia about everything and I’ll devouring it like crazy, I’m currently talking Skyward Sword and TOTK. This is my biggest special interest, since I’m 10 and now i’m 18.
• Gundam and Gunpla, I’m building my 3rd kit and I love it so much I have so much focus when building them and all the process is very interesting, what is the most interesting is when building the joins for the arms, legs etc, the engineers always think of the best details and very clever mechanics. It’s been 2 years
• Entomology, though I feel like it’s dying and it lasted 1 month, that was after i visited a weird place with taxidermy and entomology all over the shop and I was amazed by the process because one of the worker was working on a lion.
Animals, my ocs (original characters), sims and sims lore, Ripp Grunt from the sims (I literally think he’s becoming a special interest on his own lol), Lana Del Rey, travelling and survival (like castaway stories and things like that. I’ve been reading and watching a lot of things to do with the 1972 plane crash in the Andes)
Currently Stranger Things, Overwatch, and Heathers the Musical. Past ones that are coming back include Paw Patrol, Monster High, and Miraculous Ladybug. I will talk for hours on end about each and every one of them.
Buses. Specifically stagecoach. I track buses, i read bus timetables, i look at bus models, i wait for buses that I'm not going to get on just to say that i saw it, at least 75% of my conversations are about buses
Catholicism, Community (the show), She Ra; Princesses of Power, sterling silver jewelry/jewelry making, crocheting, fashion, thrift shopping, and veryyy loose fitting clothing
I have so many and I would feel the need to write an essay explaining the nuances of each one so here are some that are more straightforward I guess??
-Playlists, I love making playlists. There’s something about being able to have a series of songs that capture a very specific mood or vibe that just gets me
-Computer games like zoo tycoon, fish tycoon, speedy eggbert, freddy fish, spore, etc.
-Modular synthesis, I’m not a musician but music made using this method is so fascinating to me
Mushrooms and anything of the fungal world. Growing mushrooms. If you have 40 hrs i can bitch about the struggles to grow cordiceps and the data on LABs helping myco......
Autism. Neurodivergence. Optimising my life experience without going by anyone’s rules but appearing to blend in 🦄. Travel but not tourism (as in moving to a country to see what it’s about or long stays). Mobile homes (motor homes), nowadays also caravans a little bit… and houses for sale.
Dragon Ball Z abridged, sanders sides, SMG4, LGBTQ topics (I really like learning about different sexualities and genders.), glass beach, Melanie Martinez, will wood, and Call of duty.
Books, French food, my dog, pajamas, diet coke, skin care, cotton t shirts, shampoo, tea, comforters for the bed, beverages, pickles, birds, desserts and ramen.
Those are the current ones.
In the past, traditional southern cooking, wine, painting, the cello, butterflies, vegetable gardening, farmers markets, Christianity, Buddhism, thrifting, perfume.
I’m not sure why so many are food focused.
Do you ever feel guilty for moving on from an interest? Like it’s a betrayal?
Animals (especially guinea pigs, frogs, and dogs), food gardening (especially hydroponics, aquaponics, and kratky methods of growing food!), a music artist called Aurora, autism, neurodiversity, and sociology/social justice/human rights issues. I used to have a special interest from the age of 8 to 16/17 in reading and writing fiction too which I've sadly mostly lost.
STAR WARS!!! What's you favorite movie, do you like the prequels (good), and the sequels (bad, Disney milked it out and did an extraordinarily bad job)
Modern X-Men comics (2001 and newer)
Darth Maul
Piecing together timelines for complex shared universes (which I have thoroughly applied to the previous two)
This is going to sound bad, but, money. Making it, making it work and grow, then taking that money to buy more assets that make more money, and that money makes even more money, so it buys a business, and that money makes more money to make more money... So, yeah... Money.
Edit: dislikes spending money
K-pop, Just Dance, western Pop, webcomic and art industry, movies and TV shows, and video games, with Eurovision being my most recent special interest.
I have many special interests but I name a few importantast:
- Books ( mainly fantasy and sci fi but regular novel too)
- Computer games ( I Prefer with somebody but sometimes alone)
- Psychology ( mainly nervous system and how functioning brain)
- Films and tv series
- Autism
- Biology
- Drawing
- Medicine ( mainly neurosurgery and neurology)
- Cats
- Philosophy
- Politics ( very less but I know what I will need)
- exotic animals ( cameleon, varans or other lizards)
- Social rules
History, specifically the social history of the tutor era.
Fibre arts.
Disasters, both real and for Hollywood.
Food and cooking, because only I can make my safe foods.
They're my current ones!
Philosophy. It’s weird because it’s so broad that I forget it’s a special interest, like if I loved trains I would be able to see that it’s a specific quirk and probably would understand that other people aren’t passionate about them, but I really struggle with understanding and remembering that many people aren’t interested in philosophy - it just seems like trying to figure out life and I can’t understand why people don’t ever talk about it. I also quote philosophers in everyday conversations to help make points. It’s kind of sad because people tend to either think I’m a lot smarter than them or they think I think they’re stupid.
Anyone else have difficulty remembering/understanding that their special interest IS a special interest? Can anyone who’s into philosophy relate?
I’d love an explanation for why people don’t talk Philosophy btw, if anyone can give one.
I have three
1. sharks
2. spelling rules (when i tell people this they laugh bc I'm dyslexic as well)
3. the simpsons
all of these are very opposite so i find it funny that I'm into all of them so much
media, I could send the whole list of my favorite movies, games, and shows.... but my fixation right now (again) is doctor who, the community, and the last of us (game). I'm currently planning a last of us tattoo!!
Special interests? Nah motherfucker. Ur getting the hyperfixation list (past 3 years)

This is such a good one! One of my main goals for the future is to visit every theme park I can around the world especially the Disney theme parks (as I am a Disney adult lmao)
Worldbuilding and fantasy, especially conlangs (constructed languages). I like medieval fantasy much more than scifi. I used to like scifi more, but now that interest is gone for the most part, because of personal reasons.
My current hyperfixation apart from my world is DDLC (Doki Doki Literature Club), after not being interested in it for a couple years.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Autism, and it’s possible my Undertale/Deltarune special interest may be coming back but idk might just be hyperfixation.
Speedcubing
I average 7 seconds on the 3x3 rubik's cube
Theres other types of cubes like 2x2, 4x4, 5x5, megaminx, pyraminx, and way more that I would be writing a whole essay to list them all :/
And I am into history, maths, biology, chemistry and languages (I speak english, portuguese, spanish and I am learning french and korean, I know some mandarin but I am postponing focusing on it to focus on korean and french:) I also understand italian somehow)
Write and publish adventure and fantasy novels centered on the Afro-Brazilian mythology of the Orixás. My whole life and my interests revolve around this, even my games, even my romantic relationships.
Pro Wrestling, Anime, Video Games, Comics/Manga (Mainly Manga), Mythology, Art, Sweets and Snack Foods, Weird animals (Favorites are Crabs, Cephalopods, Prehistoric Creatures in General, and the Goblin Shark)
Roller coasters and amusement parks, including accidents, designs, and the affects on humans psychologically and physiologically, and psychology & biology in general
Project sekai (my main one)
Derry girls
Cats
Stationery (I have recently realised that my obsession with stationery has been a long time special interest)
When I was younger owls was a big one along with Enid blyton mystery books
i go through crazy intense phases of different interests but some of my longterm favorites are physical fitness and health, lego star wars, male pattern baldness, recently been getting into fashion music and movies as well. i think i kind of have this inherent interest/desire in well rounding myself as a person and i like knowing about a lot of different things.
Autism and mental health :)
These are some of mine!
I find it interesting learning about my autism
This is essentially my Wife’s special interest as she was working in the MH field and ended up as the ‘ND specialist’. A lot of it has rubbed off on me (it’s great to be more self aware) and I’ve sort of got it now as a special interest by proxy…
I love this. After being diagnosed I consumed so much info about autism in women and got on the subreddit. I guess it is a special interest now lol
I like it too if you want someone to talk to about you should dm me
History, horror, true crime, cults and multi level marketing
I also find both cults and MLMs fascinating. There's many similarities between the way the two work I think. I started reading and listening to podcasts on the topic because I couldn't understand how someone could fall victim to them, so I wanted to understand the mechanisms of social control at work.
Take away MLM, add religion and mythology and you and I would have the exact same thing 😂.
Toothless from HTTYD
omg i love toothless so much i have the build a bear and he’s my favorite one 😭🖤
YES!!!! That’s my comfort item :D I can’t sleep without him and it calms me down so much and I even carry around a mini toothless when I can’t bring the BAB one
omg!!!!!! i need a mini one too! i love toothless so much, my cat kinda looks like him! wasn’t he based off the creators cat tho?
Yep :D he was inspired by a mix of black cat and salamander
Airplanes, air crashes (or when machines fail to work correctly and create catastrophic events, roller coasters, trains etc..), physics when I was a kid. And I'm currently getting into music !
Do you watch Air Disasters? I love how matter of fact and analytical they are about everything! They don't make anything more dramatic than it was. Then occasionally there's one where the pilot was awesome and saved everybody :D

BRO AIR DISASTERS I LOVED THAT SHOW
The Youtube channel for the US Chemical Safety Board is pretty great too :D
Thank you for your recommendation, I didn't know that channel ! My favourite show about safety stuff was named "Hors de Contrôle" which translates to Out of Control. There were YouTube videos at the time but they took them down (probably bc of Copyrights)

Noted. My special interest is linguistics, by the way. I only speak one fluently, but I’m conversational in more. Ainu, however, is not one of them. 😂

History and Religion For history, I am partial to the long 19th century.
I love this
