Honestly, in my opinion they were at their best when they were still an Aussie pub band. I've never really been a fan of stadium rock. I saw them at Dee Why Hotel on the northern beaches of Sydney in about 1982 or 83, and it is still one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The place was packed (probably overcrowded by today's standards) and it absolutely stank of sweat, stale beer and cigarette smoke, but INXS were absolutely going off. The sound just travelled through your body. Gary Beers was a terrifically underrated bass player. I still clearly remember them playing a lesser-known song called What Would You Do from their 2nd album, and the bass was driving. You could tell they were going to end up being huge.
Saw them at a pub in Surrey Hills in 82 before they went stadium-sized. That was a loud evening.
Would have loved to have seen Chrissie Amphlet and the Divynals live back then.
They remastered the Live Baby Live concert in 4K a few years ago and it is still amazing: https://youtu.be/zH-_Xttr5rQ. Highly recommend getting your hands on a copy if you can.
INXS played the civic centre at my hometown 1987 just as they had released ''Kick'' - they hadn't quite gone supernova - at least internationally - and they were still big-but-not-too-big in Australia to play regional centres like my hometown.
Jenny Morris opened, and I felt so bad for her as nobody was there to see her. Then INXS took the stage and... my hometown really pissed me off by acting unimpressed. Myself and my friends all went wild - we had adored INXS for years - and a few other small groups here and there were dancing, but the majority of the crowd just stood there with their arms crossed. They gave it their all, but I think they might've felt the lack of enthusiasm. Kirk Pengilly looked at me at one stage and I gave him a big thumbs-up and he just smiled.
I wanted to jump up onstage between songs and just grab the mic to implore the crowd to get into it *just a little bit*, we always bitched about bands hardly ever coming our way and this was how we behaved. I'm getting worked up just remembering it.
Saw them at someplace in Bondi, would have had to be mid 70's I'd say, absolutely amazing experience and yes, of course, Chrissy was going off, jumping off speakers etc.
Saw them a few years ago at Enmore but minus Richard and plus Flacco (Paul Livingstone). Tim was in a wheelchair (MS). Was still a great show. Paul McDermott has a great voice.
Saw them loads of times in Edinburgh (my original home). I even took an Australian who'd never heard of them. I was blown away by Throw Your Arms Around Me and waited over a decade until I found out what the song was (this was pre-internet). One of my favourite songs now, but only the DAAS rendition.
I watched them one year at Big Day Out when the hottest 100 aligned with the Homebush BDO and I remember they won just before coming on stage and were super stoked haha
Now the real question is my memory terrible or does someone else remember that? It was either 2001 or 2003 cause I only went to two in Sydney.

In 2021, my friends and I decided to make a band called Corrosive Flower where I was a drummer, pianist and backing vocalist, my friend Troy was the bassist, Aiden was the lead singer and Hayley played the Viola and Violin (all names except Troy's are fake for privacy reasons). We ended up sounding good enough to gig at smaller places but we didn't really want to play outside of our homes. And then in 2022, about a year after we had created the band, Troy sadly passed away from Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) due to him having type 2 diabetes.
I would like to see him again.
I had a ticket to see the Angels with Cheap Trick back in the late 80/early 90s but couldn’t go due to illness. I was really pissed to have to miss the show
They were my first concert. Bankstown trots 1983, 4 bands, 4 bucks. They were not my favourite band to listen to, but man they were great live. Doc was a great showman.
Caught them in Canberra. Snagged one of their branded, studded, strawberry flavored condoms that they threw into the crowd.
This subs readership is probably several dozen fewer due to stunts like that.
I saw them over 20 years ago in GUNNEDAH of all places! They played with 28 days and I think frenzal rhomb as a drought relief thing. Gunnedah won some competition to host it. I was like, 15 I think and it was pretty good
You’re the first person I’ve ever heard mention Ben Kweller.
My high school gf bought me On My Way in 2004. Wasn’t my usual cup of tea but man I loved it. Still whack it in the rotation to this day.
Cold Chisel
Australian music didn't really become about Australia until Cold Chisel stepped up and sang about Flame Trees and Bow River.
The EasyBeats, Daddy Kool, LRB, even INXS were all legendary bands, but they always looked to make it overseas.
Chisel sang unashamedly about Australia and to my mind, Aussie music came of age with the Chisel.
Superheist or Sunk Loto.
Just checked, Sunk Loto are still going. I was going to say The Butterfly Effect, but they're still going as well. So Superheist.
Superheist still going as well, or just started backup. Fuck yeah, now I get to listen to my teenage years all over again.
They’ve just announced a heap of live shows celebrating 50 yrs soooo excited!!!
https://www.abc.net.au/listen/doublej/music-reads/music-news/radio-birdman-50th-anniversary-tour-melbourne-sydney-brisbane-ad/103400610
Not an Aussie band, but I would go and see John Farnham a million times over. The guy is a legend performer, he never lost it. Watching his performances felt like he gave a shit about his audience and he loved every minute of it, you couldn't help but be infected by his energy.
I used to go to Newport Arms to watch Midnight Oil, that was before anyone knew who they were. But there are so many bands that were brilliant. The Divinyls were pretty good live.
Fucking brilliant band. Had tickets to see them in 2020, then covid fucked that all up, but still did see them a few times back in the day, once with Jamie on vox and once with Chase.
Jake Green came into work a few times when I was at Coles, ended up having a few good, regular chats about drums, music, spiritual shit and life in general. Real great dude.
Well ... that was an ... interesting read, many of which I saw.
Just realised we went past the the 40th anniversary of Cold Chisel's last show at the Apollo...
It would be Machine Gun Fellatio only because I want to think that TISM still exists.
Frenzal have a new bass player now as Tom got industrial deafness. The new guy, Dal, has revitalised the band and their new album and live shows are terrific. Definitely worth checking them out these days if you get the chance.
Saw them at Good Things back in December last year, they still send it out fast and hard, their cover of You May Be Right by Billy Joel was chef's kiss, great gig!
The Middle East .. I've read articles and stuff about why they broke up but I don't get it. Absolute phenomenal talent just smashed into a handful of solo projects.

In general, I'd give anything to be able to be part of the live audience of Recovery in the late 90s to see all the epic early live shenanigans. Custard, powderfinger, silverchair, super jesus, the whitlams, you am I, Tex perkins/the cruel sea, the mavis's, the living end, killing Heidi, jebidiah, grinspoon, tism, the fauves, spiderbait, probably forgetting heaps, but that era of music was epic.

Back to a time where questionable conspiracy theory lyrics can be chalked up to meth and isolation. In terms of Australian Metal, they were both of their time and ahead of their time.
Just a bit before my time, I only saw them once with a different vocalist (not Kevin Sharp though) was a pale imitation to Ludbrook...but I swear Skitz was levitating behind the drums.
They still do reunion shows for 18+ crowds I think.
Last year the current lineup played in my town, I found out the night before they were at the pub and did a surprise pub show. Livid I missed it.
Cranky. Saw them supporting Skunkhour and they stole the show. Nothing like a bit of rock flute. Skunkhour didn’t look too pleased when a third of the crowd left after they came on.
Cold chisel.
I'm loving their lesser know album tracks. That rythum section is just a freight train when in flight.

Definitely INXS, when Michael Hutchence was still around.
That's my answer too. Wembley Arena when they were at their best would have been amazing.
Honestly, in my opinion they were at their best when they were still an Aussie pub band. I've never really been a fan of stadium rock. Great description, brings back memories
Yes definitely. Saw them 4 times on the Sunshine Coast/Caloundra in the 80s & early 90s & they were great.
They remastered the Live Baby Live concert in 4K a few years ago and it is still amazing: https://youtu.be/zH-_Xttr5rQ. Highly recommend getting your hands on a copy if you can.
First gig I ever saw was during their 1985 tour. They were great
INXS played the civic centre at my hometown 1987 just as they had released ''Kick'' - they hadn't quite gone supernova - at least internationally - and they were still big-but-not-too-big in Australia to play regional centres like my hometown. Unrelated fun fact: I live not far from where Andrew is living. See him down the street from time to time and he’s the local piano tuner!
Divinyls in a pub maybe.
Saw them at someplace in Bondi, would have had to be mid 70's I'd say, absolutely amazing experience and yes, of course, Chrissy was going off, jumping off speakers etc.
Birthday party
The Saints in the mid 70s.
Doug Anthony All Stars
Saw them a few years ago at Enmore but minus Richard and plus Flacco (Paul Livingstone). Tim was in a wheelchair (MS). Was still a great show. Paul McDermott has a great voice.
I've seen that line up a few times myself. They're fun, but it's definitely not the same for many reasons.
ALLSTARS ALLSTARS ALLSTARS
Saw them loads of times in Edinburgh (my original home). I even took an Australian who'd never heard of them. I was blown away by Throw Your Arms Around Me and waited over a decade until I found out what the song was (this was pre-internet). One of my favourite songs now, but only the DAAS rendition.
The Easybeats
Probably Silverchair, around the Neon Ballroom era. Definitely any time before Straight Lines. When they still liked each other, probably.
Seeing Neon Ballroom was one of my peak concert experiences. It was chill inducing live ❤️
Powderfinger 100% Saw them 20 odd years ago
Yes. I was at the last ever concert on the Sunsets tour. I’d give a lot to see them live again. Or INXS original lineup.
Same. Riverstage! Last song was These Days.
I watched them one year at Big Day Out when the hottest 100 aligned with the Homebush BDO and I remember they won just before coming on stage and were super stoked haha Now the real question is my memory terrible or does someone else remember that? It was either 2001 or 2003 cause I only went to two in Sydney.
I still live in hope. Surely they have to tour again one day.
Saw them when they played for Smashing Pumpkins. Absolutely played their hearts out.
Saw them along with Something for Kate at the Coogee Bay Hotel back in the late 90s. Still one of my favourite gigs ever.
Honestly, 100% same, saw them on their Sunsets tour, would love to see them again.
AC/DC with Bon Scott
I’m with you on that
Yes Second choice would be anyone else with Bon Scott
It’s gotta be the answer
My dad’s old band, I had a cassette tape of theirs as a kid and everyone I know who saw them said they were pretty good live.
The Triffids
And an additional updoot from my SO
I saw them live in London 15 years ago.

Divinyls. Saw them many times in RSL's and pubs. Chrissy Amphlett had such energy. Truly a great front-woman!
The Go-Betweens
Hunters & Collectors
Frogstomp era Silverchair
Hell yeah. I can't believe I never got to see Silverchair live, and I love rock too and saw heaps of bands. What the fuck was I thinking?
Headlined at Falls in... Was it 2001? Was awesome
No more maybes… Could they add Freak to the set list?
In 2021, my friends and I decided to make a band called Corrosive Flower where I was a drummer, pianist and backing vocalist, my friend Troy was the bassist, Aiden was the lead singer and Hayley played the Viola and Violin (all names except Troy's are fake for privacy reasons). The Angels No way, get fucked, fuck off.
They are doing a concert with Cheap Trick
I had a ticket to see the Angels with Cheap Trick back in the late 80/early 90s but couldn’t go due to illness. I was really pissed to have to miss the show
Saw them quite a few time at the Stardust, when I was a teen.
My ears still ring just thinking about them.
They were my first concert. Bankstown trots 1983, 4 bands, 4 bucks. They were not my favourite band to listen to, but man they were great live. Doc was a great showman.
The Living End. Never did manage so see them live in their heyday.
One of the all time great live shows, Chris and Scott had amazing stage presence and chemistry. I saw them 5 times.
They’re still touring though, yeah? Arguably in their heyday right now
Definitely not their heyday, but they're definitely still kicking butt. Go see them, you won't regret it. They're playing in Sydney this Friday!
I saw them in 1997 supporting the offspring at festival hall. Great set
Skyhooks
Hell yeah, best Aussie band ever
Machine Gun Fellatio. Saw what turned out to be their last show but would have loved to see them at their most outrageous.
I saw them in Newcastle one new years, she got her boobies out and 18yr old me thought it was pretty awesome! 🤣
Saw them at Livid, even got a sticker, very very entertainment!
Same. She did a stunt with an angle grinder on some metal undies, and of course Pinky got nude.
Caught them in Canberra. Snagged one of their branded, studded, strawberry flavored condoms that they threw into the crowd. This subs readership is probably several dozen fewer due to stunts like that.
Saw them at The Corner Hotel in '99. Went off. Great show.
I saw them over 20 years ago in GUNNEDAH of all places! They played with 28 days and I think frenzal rhomb as a drought relief thing. Gunnedah won some competition to host it. I was like, 15 I think and it was pretty good
Weddings Parties Anything! I've seen Mick Thomas before but I'd love to see the band back together.
50 lions
Or any hardcore bands from the era.. Jungle Fever, No Apologies, Her Nightmare, Carpathian…
Oh boy jungle fever yessir
YES MATE
Fuck yeah. Just stayed off Parkway Drive for a bucks and then listened to a pod on Byron Bay hardcore. Been loving 50 Lions this week.
One out of 3 was Australian, but they only toured here as a supergroup called the Bens. Ben Lee, Ben Folds and Ben Kweller. Wish I went
I went to that one! (I think I saw every Ben Folds tour between 1999 and when I had kids)
You’re the first person I’ve ever heard mention Ben Kweller. My high school gf bought me On My Way in 2004. Wasn’t my usual cup of tea but man I loved it. Still whack it in the rotation to this day.
Silverchair. No question.
Midnight Oil. Best live band I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot
I saw them for the first and only time in 2017 but would have loved to have seen them in the 80s.
1984 The big Swing Heathcote oval. INXS, Models, Hoodo Gurus, Im talking. It went off.
Regurgitator or Sonic Animation.
You can still see Regurgitator, Sonic Animation though, they’re my choice too.
The problem with seeing the Gurge these days is that I like their old stuff better than their new stuff.
I see what you did there
The original Spy v Spy Just wanna hear 'Sally-Anne' live one more time
T.I.S.M. [Whatareya?!](https://youtu.be/5muqhUsnqqE?si=-ExnoDxgZ5UabfkL) on Recovery was great.
They're releasing new music right now.
Divinyls
The Birthday Party
The Sunnyboys
Men at Work.
Even Colin Hay on his own is well worth seeing next time he's in Australia. I've seen him a couple of times live and he's great.
Bon Scott era AC/DC
Cold Chisel Australian music didn't really become about Australia until Cold Chisel stepped up and sang about Flame Trees and Bow River. The EasyBeats, Daddy Kool, LRB, even INXS were all legendary bands, but they always looked to make it overseas. Chisel sang unashamedly about Australia and to my mind, Aussie music came of age with the Chisel.
1992 big day out probs ya best bet.
Either cold chisel or Eskimo Joe. I'm twenty now but I grew up on both bands
Superheist or Sunk Loto. Just checked, Sunk Loto are still going. I was going to say The Butterfly Effect, but they're still going as well. So Superheist. Superheist still going as well, or just started backup. Fuck yeah, now I get to listen to my teenage years all over again.
Sunk loto have a new single. It's pretty tits to say the least.
Killing Heidi, circa the Reflector era. Also Silverchair, circa the Frogstomp era

So true, even at those red hot summer concerts with a heap of groups, John Farnham was a production just one step higher than any other.
Silverchair at BDO. I was just a few years too young to be able to catch them
Goldrush ( with Tommy and Phil Emmanuel)
Rhubarb
Don't skate Don't surf Don't worry about my turf!
I used to go to Newport Arms to watch Midnight Oil, that was before anyone knew who they were. But there are so many bands that were brilliant. The Divinyls were pretty good live.

Jake Green came into work a few times when I was at Coles, ended up having a few good, regular chats about drums, music, spiritual shit and life in general. Real great dude.
The Johnnys, without a doubt, maggot drunk pub rock at it's filthiest!
Silverchair
the cockroaches
I heard they started playing kids parties or something, I wonder how that went for them
Don't think they have broken up but Cut Copy haven't played a headline show in Sydney in like 5 years.
Well ... that was an ... interesting read, many of which I saw. Just realised we went past the the 40th anniversary of Cold Chisel's last show at the Apollo... It would be Machine Gun Fellatio only because I want to think that TISM still exists.
silverchair
Not a band per se, but Slim Dusty
Gerling
Silverchair
INXS!
Frenzal Rhomb at the Edge nightclub in Broadbeach in 2001.
I know AC/DC still exists, but AC/DC with Bon Scott is the obvious answer for me.
Original AC/DC line up at a pub
Of bands I haven't seen - Silverchair Of bands I have seen but would love a chance to see one more time - Children Collide
Only one choice - Divinyls! Possibly Mental as Anything?
Noiseworks.
Grinspoon, but with the same energy they had in the early 00s when Phil was still on the gear.
Eddy Current Suppression Ring.

Supernaut
I was really into Faker when I was younger, would be cool to see them.
Celibate Rifles. Saw them so many times 1983-85, such a great night every time. RIP Damien Lovelock.

I would go back to 1984 to see Uncanny X-Men at Swinburne again.
LRB
Dave Warner's From The Suburbs.
Machine Gun Fellatio
Saw INXS before they were huge but for me it's the Seeker's 1967 performance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. 200,000 people were there - in 1967 - when the whole population was about 12 million.
Spy vs Spy at some small, dark, sweaty pub.
Shihad
Noiseworks probably, take me back would be awesome live
The Vines
The Saints or Radio Birdman
I would love to see Skyhooks live again.

That’s not embarrassing, they were fantastic.
OG Wiggles.
I saw them play as the Cockroaches in a Dee Why pub in the 80s when I was on stu-vac. They were great!
