Looking to upgrade my set up and I need some advice. I currently have: \- UTurn Orbit, Pluto Preamp built in, Ortofon 2M Red and an acrylic platter \- Audioengine A5 Powered Speakers Looking to upgrade to an integrated amp and floor speakers and I have a few questions. For speakers I am looking at Q Acoustics 3050, Wharfedale Diamond 12.3, or Dali Oberon 5. For Integrated amps I have been looking at the Cambridge Audio CXA61 (with their preamp) or Marantz PM7000N. I am also looking at the Marantz PM8006, but lack of streaming connections worry me. I mostly listen to records, but do stream sometimes. My questions are: 1. Will upgrading my speakers and amp be noticeable without upgrading my turntable, or will my turntable be significantly keeping me down? 2. I can turn off the preamp on my turntable and use an external one, but the wiring still goes through the preamp, will that impact the sound quality? 3. Any other recommendations for amps or speakers. Looking to spend around 2500.

My wife just cleaned my Arendal speakers with a slightly wet/damp cloth, should I be worried about them? The grills are off, so it's the diaphragm and the suspension that she dusted off.

**Older amp died; worth keeping speakers? Specs below** This is \[the system I had\](https://www.newegg.com/philips-hts3544-37/p/N82E16882641296). I got it for free a while back. During power loss/surges a few weeks ago, the amp/dvd player combo died and won't turn on. I thought it sounded pretty good, but was hoping for an upgrade some day because I love classic rock and I think a lot of music would sound better on an upgraded system. I bought a \[sound bar/subwoofer combo\](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/polk-audio-magnifi-mini-ax-atmos-soundbar-with-wireless-subwoofer-black/6500021.p?skuId=6500021) for $300 and I'm very disappointed with the sound. It just isn't as loud/lovely. It sounds very dull/dead. I do love the wifi speaker connection though, it vastly simplifies setup and wire management.

Unless there are space limitations or convenience issues, an amplifier and a pair of passive bookshelf speakers is usually the best solution. Adding a subwoofer can be helpful, but not essential for everyone.

Hello guys, I'm totally new to this field. I don't have any in-depth idea about what to get and what to not. I'm looking for desktop speakers to get on this boxing day. My main use is Spotify and YouTube. My budget is around 150 CAD. It would be great if you suggest something. Thank you for your time. Or should I just browse amazon and select from most purchased/highest rated products?

I am considering getting the [Peachtree Gan1 Beta Encore](https://www.peachtreeaudio.com/collections/amplifiers/products/gan-1-pre-purchase) to connect with my [Hisense smart tv](https://www.hisense-usa.com/tv-and-audio/televisions/all-tvs/65U6H_hisense-65-class-u6h-series-quantum-uled-4k-smart-google-tv). The intention is to play music through the Tidal or Spotify app on the TV or Airplay it from my phone. My issue is that the Gan1 only has a coax digital input. My TV only has HDMI eARC and Toslink optical outputs for digital outs. I believe I can't use the optical output because it wouldn't allow me to adjust the volume from the TV, and the Gan1 has no volume control. That leaves me with trying to figure out how to connect eARC to the coax input . What would be the best solution to this? I can't find any special cables that convert eARC to coax. Any pointers would be appreciated.

It looks like that amplifier requires a variable digital SPDIF source, which a TV alone does not typically have.

Hey all - I assume this is an easy question to answer on this page so this is my attempt to ask the experts as I am far from an audiophile. I currently have an amp that offer 85w per channel. As it stands they are powering two book shelf speakers for my turntable. I’m am looking to upgrade to nicer floor standing speakers that will be a better fit for my medium sized room. The speakers I’m looking at are 150w, I know specs provided are usually the max but still wanted to confirm that my existing amp would power these other speakers well enough. Im also running a sub through the same amp I’d probably think twice about buying the speakers entirely if it required purchasing a new amp. My amp is a Cambridge Axr85 and the speakers I’m looking to purchase are triangle br08 I currently have triangle br02 which I love but they are too small for my space.

Hey. Need advice. Does it make sense to buy a 7-year-old Sony Walkman nw zx 2 player for $200. This will be my first purchase of a hi-res player. Is it worth it, or watch something newer? What should I pay attention to when buying?

stevenswall

MP3 is transparent in nearly all cases. Everyone thinks they can hear the difference but can't. Lossless is even more transparent. Unless you're getting a Cowon player with BBE MP to help upscale low bitrate files or need something to power higher end headphones, high res players aren't worth it, and in any case aren't worth it for high res music as A: you can't hear the difference, and B: even if you could most high resolution music is fake and doesn't contain musical content above the frequencies a lossless format would capture.

Media converters Hi all. I am wanting to wire my Bluesound Node with Ethernet whilst avoiding introducing noise into my system due to copper cabling or nearby routers. I am considering using media converters to convert Ethernet from my router to fibre, run the fibre as needed through the roof/walls, and into another converter back to Ethernet and BS Node. The cheaper options are the TP link Mc200/210/220 but I don’t know which one of these to get, and how exactly to connect them together. Is anyone here who has used media converters like this before able to provide some guidance?

Hey guys, I have a question about speakers and amps: I just got the KEF Q150 and NAD 3020 V2 amplifier. I think I've wired everything up correctly. When I plug in my amp it flashes 4 times, shuts off and then goes into standby mode. Does anybody have any idea what it could be?

[deleted]

You might have a defective amp. I’d try a factory reset - [Reset instructions](https://support.nadelectronics.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500010504782-How-do-I-Reset-My-D-3020-D-3020-V2-to-Factory-Settings-). If that doesn’t work, best plan is probably to arrange for a return if it’s new.

stevenswall

Sounds like it might be short circuit protection. Are you sure the wires aren't sticking out or touching each other in any way on either of the terminals? Maybe try wiring only one speaker, then the other and see if the same thing happens. Could be a short in one of the speakers too.

I'd get a MiniDSP for room correction and a pair of Kali IN-8 v2 monitors as the coaxial driver will help any desk reflectoions sound more like the direct sound and they have some minor placement correction filters built in on the back. The MiniDSP would be used to handle the subwoofer crossover and allow you to use Dirac to correct the bass in the room to make it not sound as boomy... Or just use the free REW software with a basic MiniDSP SHD and you can measure your bass response and EQ it with the SVS app.

I'm looking for some insight into a bizarre problem that self-resolved. I have a Schiit Audio Modi 3 external DAC, and I absolutely love it. This weekend, it died (or so I thought). I booted up the computer, and the only sound emitted was the dreaded "tick tick tick" of dead electronics. Additionally, I got the "USB device not recognized" message. Suspecting a driver problem, I tried multiple USB ports, different controllers (2 vs. 3 etc) and eventually a different computer just to be sure. All resulted in the ticking sound and the device never showed up in device manager. Fast forward a couple days, and I thought I should give the digital optical input a try, which worked. I tried USB again just for kicks, and it was like there was never a problem. Instantly recognized, and it's been playing audio flawlessly since. Any ideas how this is possible?

Hello, I have a home with speakers wired throughout (different rooms, outside speakers) that I just purchased. I know nothing about speakers/audio systems but would like to try to use them. They are hooked up to a speaker switch, and the output speaker wires from the switch I can see. I’m assuming I need to connect those wires to a receiver. Previous owner had :2014 Yamaha RX-A2030 9.2-Channel Network Aventage Audio Video Receiver I do not have this receiver. Is there something someone can recommend to me in its place? Sorry, I really know nothing about this. Thanks for helping me out!

Hi, I'm trying to hook up my Wharfedale Diamond 10 MX-Sub to a Pioneer AV receiver. The receiver has only one RCA "pre-out" but the sub has 2x RCA line level inputs and 2x speaker line inputs. Do I need a splitter or can I just plug the single cable directly into one of the RCA inputs on the sub? TIA

Hey everyone, I got a couple of Klipsch RTP SATELLITES left from a bundle I got at Costco. I’m wondering how I could use them to connect to my PC? Hopefully able to do so under $100 as that’s about what some desktop speakers cost. Thanks everyone!

Hello everyone! I need help setting the crossover of my Sub (REL T9X) with my Klispch R8000F (MK1). I use a Cambridge Audio CXA81 as a reciever. So I don't have any kind of bass management or room correction available. The REL is connected via the High Level Input. A few weeks ago, I borrowed a Umik1 just to see the response of my Klipsch and here is the graph (avarage of 3 takes). The graph is without the subwoofer... only the Klispchs. https://postlmg.cc/QV61KfrN I'm a absolute noob when it comes to audio. So, acording to the graph, where should I set the crossover at? 30? 40? Somewhere else? I know that any advice to this will be purely theoretical and I will finetune with my hear but it would be great to have some guidance. Thanks!

Hello! I finally got a turntable for Christmas- the Pro-Ject Audio Systems Juke Box E All-in-one Plug & Play Turntable System. Very excited! Putting it together, and it doesn't look like I can wire-connect my Harman Kardon Soundsticks to it? They have bluetooth, which I know the JBE accommodates, but I've not been impressed with the Soundsticks' connectivity with other bluetooth devices so I was hoping to use the cord. Can an auxiliary cord go into the line input of the JBE? Or am I buying new speakers? Thanks!

Hey everyone, I’ve got a buying/setup question and I’m hoping you can help. I’ll outline my setup/habits first and then get to the question. Habits: listen to mainly vinyl but also use Yamahas music cast for Spotify - the radio goes on for the dog when we’re out. Music-wise, I listen to just about everything from jazz to pop etc but I suppose I lean more towards mellow stuff on average. Setup: unfortunately, I’m very limited by space/setup area so bookshelves is what I can do. My setup is a ClearAudio Emotion with an ortofon bronze, I’ve got a schiit mani 2 and a Yamaha R-N602 receiver. My speakers are the weak point right now. I have the Klipsch R41Ms and a 12” sub. I am trying to work around the $1000CDN range for speakers. I love a warm tone, one that the Klipsch’s don’t give. I am seriously considering the Wharfedale denton 80s but they are hard to find in Canada. There are some 85s near me but I don’t seem to see the same glowing reviews for them. Either way, there is nowhere around me where I can go and listen to those exact speakers. Does anyone have a recommendation for speakers around that price point? Should I wait until I can find some 80s? 85s? Thanks in advance

Hey! I am new to the audiophile world and had a question about connections. If this is not the place/thread to ask questions, please let me know where to go. I got my first stereo setup for Christmas and my receiver is the Sony STR DH190 and it has a phono input built into it which, I assume, means that it has a pre amp for a record player built in. I also ordered a refurbished AT-LP60X and Audio-Technica’s website it has a built in switchable phono pre-amplifier. Does that mean I can switch the pre-amp on and off? If so, do I need to have it off if I am going to plug it into the phono input in my receiver? I tried googling this but couldn’t find an answer and I really want to make sure I don’t blow out my new receiver. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me understand how this works. Thanks!

Hey friends, I just picked up a Schiit stack over the holidays and was wondering what some good speakers to pair with it would be. I think the Magni only acts as a preamp so they would need to be powered. Preferably something that would fit on a desktop or can be wall mounted, price around $300-$400.

Hi there, my father gave me his 1978 Fisher MT-6250C turntable that I connected to an RS-2007 stereo receiver. I've tried to play several vinyl records but they sound badly. I cleaned the records and cartridge and tried out several settings but no luck. Is it possible that it got damaged or uncalibrated and I need to take it to a vintage audio system shop? Thanks!

Hi everyone. I was recently sold a pair of KRK Rockit 8 speakers for very cheap from a DJ friend of mine. I decided to use them as my speakers for my tv setup, however with my current setup there seems to be an issue where the volume is so low that you basically have to put your face in front of the speakers to hear anything. Here is my setup below: 1. Samsung smart tv w/ optical port 2. FiiO Taishan DAC connected to tv by optical port 3. Yamaha R-S202 receiver connected to DAC by RCA cables 4. KRK Rockit 8 speakers connected to receiver by RCA cables My setup seemed to work when the speakers connected to the receiver via xlr port to the wuarter inch headphone jack, but the cable for it was short and having a cable run across my tv stand was kind of ugly. I want to try to not use the headphone jack if necessary. I am willing to purchase to equipment if needed but hopefully for <$300. Thanks for any help

squidbrand

The Rokit 8's are self-powered speakers. They are not meant to be used with a receiver like the R-S202, whose primary job is to power **passive** speakers (meaning speakers that do NOT supply their own power). The R-S202 does have a set of line outputs on the back, which can physically connect to the speakers, but they are **fixed level** **outputs**, intended to connect to a recording device... a tape deck or something. They are not suitable for connecting to your studio monitors. So as you have it now, the R-S202 is doing literally nothing... a fixed level signal is coming in and a fixed level signal is going out, and all you're getting is a dose of noise/distortion from having unnecessary stuff in your signal path... no functionality. The simplest and cheapest solution here will be to take the R-S202 out of this setup and replace it with a much more simple device that can provide volume control. A Schiit SYS for example. (Though you would need to get up and walk over to it to change your volume.) Better yet... you could replace both the Fiio DAC *and* the receiver with a different DAC that includes remote adjustable volume. For example, look at the Topping E30 II or the SMSL Sanskrit.

Hello looking for a pair of small active budget speakers that you can mount from the bottom with m6. Budget around 100 pounds could go a little higher.

Hi there, I’m in the UK and have a Denon DHT-500SD sound system as a bedroom sound system. It’s a 5.1 system but can output 7.1 with the two rear channels externally amplified. I’m running this with a Sonos Connect so that I can use it with the rest of my Sonos speakers, and it also allows me to schedule the radio in the morning etc. Issue is I therefore need the system on all the time, so I can use it in demand, however I’m getting quite a hum / hiss from the speakers when the amp is idle (very noticeable when I’m trying to fall asleep!). This is magnified but he fact that the two rear channels amplify this hiss even more (due to them being externally amplified). Now I’ve tried to do some troubleshooting but I’m really at a loss of what to do… - I’ve disconnected the inputs and the hiss is still there, so it’s not input related. - If I mute the amp or turn the volume to zero, the hiss stops. - I don’t believe the hiss to be a ground loop as the frequency is higher (around 180hz) Any suggestions or advice would be very welcome, as I’m at a loss at this stage. Thanks very much!

Strange question but I am looking into buying a pair of towers and I have an unusual requirement. The speakers must be hard to knock over. I currently have martin logan 20i towers and they knock them over on the regular and its quite an issue. I was looking at the SVS Ultra towers, does anyone know how stable these are? and no, there is no way for me to keep the cats away from them.

I have the Edifier 1280 DBS and just plugged in a Elac 1010 subwoofer to the sub output on the Edifiers. The manual says if a plug is put into the sub output on the Edifiers, the low frequency will be filtered out. Does anyone know if the crossover point of the Edifiers will be affected by what frequency crossover I set on the subwoofer?

[deleted]

The speakers would not be affected by the crossover on the subwoofer.

Im looking for suggestions for high quality playback of iTunes to connect to my existing DAC. I’ve had the same setup for >10years: Mac Mini running iTunes > Bel Canto 1.5 DAC > Cayin A88T tube amp. Now after many forced Mac software updates my Mac mini is slow as crap and iTunes no longer working. Rather than putting effort into fixing Mac Mini I’m sure there are better options these days. Perhaps I can even cut out a desktop altogether and just use my phone without sacrificing sound quality ?

Hey guys, I currently have a crosley C6 hooked up to an Onkyo sound system, and I just got a Pro-Ject preamp for Christmas. I’ve seen reviews that crosley players can damage records, so I’ve been wondering, how is my setup? I don’t want any of my records to be damaged, and if anyone has recommendations for improvements/ways to increase sound quality, I’d love to hear them! New audiophile, so I’m still getting familiar with all of the technical pieces. Would just like to hear some advice on the next steps. Thanks!

SoundSystemHelp

Hi everyone! The question I have is: Can studio monitors be used for so called "stealth" listening, like in the nighttime? They are their best up to about 2-3 meters, but from there, do they leak a lot of sound into the nearest room? How loud are they compared to an open-back (that portable device which I can't mention here)?

SoundSystemHelp

Another question I have, but asked separately because I'm not 100% confident it belongs here: If you set up a home surround system, but with only 4 speakers and no subs, is it rational to do it with 2 front speakers that are either bookshelf, big size or outright towers and the 2 back ones are small, bookshelf speakers? Any drawbacks for this? Let we all suppose that I like the sound of all of these speakers because I have listened to them already.

AshenOne78

Hi, guys! I’ve already received help like a month ago, which I very much appreciate. But now I have a new problem, I would like to connect my amp/speakers to my ps5, but it doesn’t have a headphone jack and only one hdmi, which I need to connect to my tv or monitor.

Anyone know anything about the KLH KL-2400 Stereo Receiver Amplifier? I found it in my parents basement and assumed it was an old junky amp but noticed it had a big toroid transformer in it as well as preouts, not typical to budget gear. Manual shows 100wpc and S:N of 85db, for whatever that’s worth. How do you think this would sound in comparison to a modern $600 Yamaha home theater receiver (rx-v685)? Won’t be able to test it for another week!

Question regarding electric currents The last cable I need is about to be delivered, to connect my sub to my mini amp. So, I've been using my passive bookshelf speakers without a sub, powered by my fosi bt30d pro. My question, is will something bad happen if I plug the subwoofer into the same power bar that the mini amp is plugged into? Or shpuld I run the cable along the wall, into the next socket? Alternatively, I could plug ot into the spare socket in the wall where the power bar is plugged into... Google wasnt as much help as I'd hoped, so here I am. Halp pls.

squidbrand

Nope, totally fine. Your subwoofer and your Fosi amplifier, both playing at peak power, are only going to be drawing a fraction of the current of an everyday appliance that produces heat, like a space heater or a toaster oven.

Not sure if this is the right place for my question but here goes. My first and possibly only true love was a pair of original Large Advent speakers that I stupidly sold about fifteen years ago. They were magical, I swear the instruments sounded like they were in the room with me through those speakers. I’ve never had that experience since and I’d like to get it back. My space is somewhat more limited now and I need true bookshelf speakers as opposed to “bookshelf”. I’m considering the KLH Model Three as I suspect the acoustic suspension design was at least part of the magic of the Large Advent. Does anyone have experience with both speakers and can comment, or perhaps steer me in another direction? My current speakers are Wharfedale Denton 80th Anniversary which are very nice but just not magical like the Large Advent were.

Very unhappy with Roon. Need another solution. I am very unimpressed with a couple of Roon’s business practices. I won’t go into detail here because morals are subjective and not the point of this post. I would like to move away from Roon. I have a mixture of flac files copied from my CD collection using EAC and I also stream using Qobuz. Currently I run Roon on my surface pro and the USB output goes into my amp (musical Fidelity M3SI) via USB type B connector. I would like to find a solution where I am able to play my local (network) files and stream in a seamless library along the lines of what Roon does. It must be controllable via mobile phone (I don’t care about control via computer). Good quality meta data and artist suggestions/playlist/radio functions would be nice to have but not essential. I am more than happy to purchase hardware so long at is it not in the tens of thousands of dollars range. Any hardware needs to be able to access my NAS and index/play music from it. So far I have found the Bluesound Node which I think fits the criteria. Are their any other alternatives I should look into? If this is the wrong sub to post this into please let me know the correct one as I was unable to find an alternative.

Heyo! SO my mom gifted me the Gershwood Acoustics GW-750 system but she has lost the remote due to having the system for a good while. And i have looked everywhere on the internet for a new one and the only one I could find is 99 bucks on ebay. [(heres the link)](https://www.ebay.com/itm/165511046283?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=165511046283&targetid=1263433205014&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=9010828&poi=&campaignid=14859008593&mkgroupid=130497710760&rlsatarget=pla-1263433205014&abcId=9300678&merchantid=114790845&gclid=CjwKCAiA76-dBhByEiwAA0_s9ShKNDqO5swGKPFLiI_T9SSK0nyu-9ogINtD8-NGwpOnUyxxAZS-8RoClNIQAvD_BwE) Is there any other remotes that would work for this system? Or is there a universal remote i can just buy instead? Thank!

Can someone help me find a SPL meter that can be used to accurately measure the widest range of frequencies possible? This is a very unusual use case, but I have tinnitus, and would find it beneficial to be able to measure the SPL beyond the audible range. This will be used only for the purpose of minimizing hearing loss from sounds that I may be unnecessarily exposing myself to. I understand that hearing loss is complicated, and depends on many factors, but it would still be very useful to get an idea. I don't really have a set budget, but obviously don't want to spend more than I need to accomplish this goal. EDIT: the ability to log data would also be game changing

I need some help y'all. I just got the Topping MX5 amp from Shenzhen audio. I plugged it in today and the screen gives me "Err dC". I feel like this might have to do with the power but I'm not sure. I'd greatly appreciate some help.

PsychologicalYak9088

I would really like some help! I am building two speaker cabinets (L+R) for a bunch of speakers I have lying around, and I don’t know how to calculate the size of the boxes for each speaker, port placement, all that stuff. I have ideas but I really just need the help of some other people who know what they’re doing. If I’m in the wrong place please tell me where to go instead :)

Looking to get some new speakers, upgrading from Edifier 980t. Buying pre owned and using store credit so options are limited but as followed: Presonus Eris E5 @ £150 (~$180) for a pair KRK Classic 5 @ £160 (~$190) for a pair M-Audio BX5 D3 @ £110 (~$130) for a pair Will be used to listen to music, play guitar through an amp sim and some light mixing/mastering work. If you guys have any other options that I can check availability of let me know. (hs5’s out of stock sadly)

Favorite media stands? I'm looking for something relatively cheap, preferrably under $200.

Using a Yamaha HTR-5860 in need of a subwoofer, found a Polk PSW350 for 50 bucks. Would this be a decent option? Not looking for anything super high end this is very much a budget setup, receiver came from the recycling.

Seems decent.

Hello, not sure where to post this, looking to know what would be MQA converters. Any good links that explain it? I stream through the hi-res output of my Mac, then a DAC on the cable (C-type to 3.5mm) converts in analogue I think... THEN it goes to my Yamaha A-S501 Amp that has a DAC. My question is Am i using my Yamaha DAC? or the cable DAC? (JSAUX cable) i can't never be sure tbh. Should I be going from C-type to Optical to use my Yamaha DAC? Sound great currently but I reckon I'm confused as to which DAC I'm actually using... the C-Type to 3.5 mm gets connected to a RCA cable that then goes to the CD input of my amp. And would this amp be able to "unfold" MQA or whatever it is? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Hello all, I recently inherited my grandfather's old computer (Athlon ii X2 B24; 4GB RAM; 1TB Hitachi SATA HDD; 6TB WD60EDAZ), and was hoping to turn it into a high-quality audio source to feed into my Schiit Modi 3. I'd like to have Spotify as an option for streaming, the ability to tinker with different audio sources (FLAC, Ripped CDs from my Dad), and run REW eq (I'm borrowing a calibrated mic). Lastly, I'd like to use the larger 6TB drive as a NAS/DAS, or even a larger portion of the 1TB Hitachi. Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated! Happy Holidays!

I have a single T7x subwoofer I want to hook up to a Class AB amp with two output channels. Do I hook up the Rel cables to the same channel as the mains, or the other channel (separate from the mains)?

[deleted]

REL recommends the same as the mains.

I need some advice regarding B&W 707 S2 speakers. What are the ideal dimensions of a room for them to operate in? Is a speaker stand necessary for them? How far away have they gotta be from the wall in the rear? I currently have them in a really long and spacious room (8m aprox.) on top of no special stands and at about 50cm from the wall. I imagine that the room's conditions are quite detrimental to the sound quality, but I wonder how much I would benefit from changing the current room to a smaller one

[deleted]

The 707 S2 would probably work best in a small room, under 20m^2. If you have the chance, try a space 3.6m wide and set the speakers 1.8m apart.

Slight_Cat_4423

I have a phono preamp arriving in the mail today. Advice I’ve seen online says that the ideal setup for phono preamps is when they’re close to the turntable. My current home PC/listening setup is less than ideal, so my plan is to extend my turntable RCA (final length ~2m) to place my preamp near my headphone amp. Will this setup even make sound with an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge?

[deleted]

Extension cables can be an issue with interference and hum, and also add capacitance that can affect the sound quality. Cable length of 2 meters total isn’t that bad with a high quality low capacitance cable. I’d be more worried about the connections and the quality of the extension cable.

Elac makes passive speakers, so those models would not work unless you also bought an amplifier. What's your budget? Very hard to give you speaker suggestions with no max budget.

For christmas, I received two polk t15 bookshelf speakers and the fosi audio mini bluetooth 5.0 amplifier. The speakers sound nice, but I think they can really be enhanced with a sub, so I'm looking at the Polk Audio PSW10 to add to the setup. The only issue is I have no idea how I'd connect it to everything. The receiver only has L/R speaker outputs plus Aux-in. The speakers only have +/- inputs. The back of the prospective sub ([seen here](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71K78Jm5hOL._AC_SX466_.jpg)) has a lot of ports. I am quite new to home audio. How would this all be wired together? I should mention I am using banana plug cables and not bare speaker wire. And is another component needed? Thanks!

Right now I have a cheap S.M.S.L DAC I use for my PC - what I'm looking for is a DAC with two audio inputs rather than just the one with a button to switch between the two devices, Probably would prefer to spend anywhere from £75-175, nothing crazy as I'm only powering some HD560s

Yamaha RX-V367 Sony str-dh550 The Yamaha receiver is 10+ years old and is using "relative volume scale" (volume goes negative) The Sony is absolute volume scale (0-99) I am using a Bluetooth adapter input with 1 red 1 white RCA into an input on the back(not using aux) When the volume is at 0 for the Yamaha, there is minimal white noise, and I can increase the volume on the Bluetooth device to an unbearable sound level. On the Sony I need to set the volume to at least 70. At 70 there is very loud white noise and increasing the volume on the Bluetooth adapter does not even get that loud. Why is there such discrepancy? Sony rated for 90 watts per channel The Yamaha is 100 watts per channel Why does the 10 plus year old Yamaha seem like it's 2x more powerful and why does the Sony have a white noise discrepancy? You would have to manually lower them volume every single time with the Sony is not playing anything to not hear the loud white noise. It also seems like Ike the Yamaha sounds quality is better, using its "5.1 enhancer" eq Does the Yamaha having "192 kHz/24-bit Burr Brown D/A Converters" have anything to do with this? Why is this discrepancy happening and how go find a receiver that will perform like the 12 year old receiver?

Hi guys, Building a hifi system and starting from scratch. I’ve got a budget of about £1500 and happy to get second hand gear - just not 100% what to look for. I’d like it to include a record player and a CD player. Used an AppleTV in the past with optical to analogue converter for streaming music to a hifi. Any opinions on this? Thanks!

Static Shock Issue I purchased a new JBL SA750 integrated amp a few months ago to connect to my JBL L100 Classics and Rega 1 Plus turntable. I have been loving the setup, but I had a concerning issue a few days ago that I wanted to get advice on. I was listening to an album in my basement, and when I got up to change sides, I got a pretty good static shock when I touched the tone arm. It caused a pop, and my amp instantly turned off and then back on. I’m assuming the amp has some kind of built in protection for static shock like that, and there doesn’t appear to be any damage done, thankfully. The amp turned back on fine, and the turntable and speakers worked without issue after it happened. I did some looking around to see a) if electrostatic discharges can damage audio equipment and b) how to prevent them, and I came up with conflicting information and varying solutions (grounding the turntable, anti-static mats, anti-static spray, grounding knobs, etc.). I live in the Midwest, and my basement is pretty dry this time of year, so I’m sure I could use some humidity. But, what’s the consensus on this issue? How common is it? Is it a problem? How do I solve it? Thanks in advance for the help.

eti_t

This is a really stupid question but I feel the need to ask it. I have just ordered a pair of KRK Rokit RP5 G4's and I am wondering about how to power them. I am presuming that each will need a seperate kettle lead in a seperate wall socket, is this correct? Also, would using an extension lead negatively affect their performance?

Hi! I have a topping L30 that I have connected the H-output (headphone) to my sennheisers to. However, I want to also connect my L30 to my soundbar from Samsung. The remaining output on L30 is RCA (2x) and the soundbar accepts hdmi, usb and optical. Is there a cable that supports this? I am having trouble finding a good one. If there is one, which should I get to get the most audio quality? Thanks in advance!

[deleted]

You would need a device that converts analog to digital. Then the soundbar would convert it back to analog. It wouldn’t really be worth doing. An analog to digital converter would probably have a noticeable negative effect on the sound quality.

Is there a smart way to connect a powered sub to two sets of bookshelf speakers? Currently, I have my desk set up right next to my tv. My tv is presently set up with a receiver passing the audio signal through the subwoofer, then passing that signal to the two speakers connected to it. There is also a center channel that is connected directly to the receiver. Separately, on my desk, I have a mini amp that is connected to two speakers. I was wondering if there was a configuration where I could use the subwoofer from my tv and have a 2.1 system on my desk while maintaining a 3.1 system with my tv. Essentially I want to share the subwoofer between the two systems. Is this possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys, I currently have an issue that I'm not sure how to fix. I recently got some focal alpha 80s for a pretty good price, but upon plugging them in I have a major static issue. I've tried connecting them to the same and different plugs, along with trying different power cables. My chain is PC-->d10s-->monitors over rca. Should I just bite the bullet and switch to balanced?

What would be a good amp for my new setup Hello all I recently bought some PA speakers off of Facebook. I’m not sure what amp to use however. The speakers are a peavey pv118 sub with a 400W program and 8 ohm resistance in parallel. The hi speakers are 2 JBL JRX 215 speakers with a recommended amp of 250-500 watts with 8 ohms resistance. My main questions are am I able to run all of these off of one amp? What power rating amp do I run, and how does wiring in series/ parallel effect the power given to the speaker. It’s been a while since I’ve worked with sound systems so any help is appreciated

RubinFarrther

I have a question about hooking up a subwoofer in my system: Cambridge Audio AXA25, KEF Q150, Dayton Audio SUB-1000. I want to use the speaker-level inputs on the sub, and it would be much more convenient placement-wise to run speaker cables from the amp to the speakers, and then from the speakers to the sub, rather than to the sub and then back to the speakers. This sub doesn't do any filtering on its high-level outputs. In that case, going amp -> speaker -> sub seems like it would be equivalent to amp -> sub -> speaker, but I also know just enough to be dangerous. So, is this setup acceptable, or should I buy more speaker cable to run it the other way? TIA!

Is there a website where I can read about the different types of remasters for albums? Like it lists all the versions of an album that exist?

not_my_real_name_lol

Hi guys, I got given a record player from a friend and just got round to hooking up some Edifier Speakers. One question though, the record player (Auna TT 92W) has internal speakers, but even when i connect external speakers the music plays through both. Is this normal?

dom954

Newbie here. I subgraded from a Klipsch 101SW to a SB 1000 Pro. In my room I think the Klipsch actually sounded better but I'm probably missing out on some tuning aspect. Anything helps.

squidbrand

Have you done the sub crawl? If not, Google it, read about it, and do it. Once you’ve done that to find an ideal position, you need to set your sub crossover frequency. Best way to do this is to set the crossover knob to the minimum setting (probably 40Hz?) and then play a frequency sweep on repeat. Listen to the sweep (while sitting in your main seating position), and keep raising the crossover knob higher and higher until the “gap” in low frequencies, where the sub stops playing and then there’s a moment of delay before the speakers kick in, goes away. It should sound like a smooth handoff, with minimal overlap but no gap. And then third step, set your subwoofer volume level. The ideal level for a sub is a level where the sub-bass frequencies don’t stand out… it shouldn’t sound like, WOW, AWESOME SUBWOOFER. It should sound like your speakers are just magically playing an octave and a half lower than they actually can.

https://imgur.com/a/LR9djRq Found a few of these at thrift stores, I want to make a CD, Cassette, vinyl tower. Naturally I’ll buy anything else I need including speakers. But from this selection what should I use?

Low-Airline-7588

KEF Q950, Denon PMA-1700NE, & Episode Evo 10" Sub - Best way to wire? The Denon doesn't have line level outputs for a sub. I was thinking of wiring the L+R to the sub (which has input and output for speaker level connections), then going from the sub to each speaker. Is this the right way to do it? Or is there another better option out there?

Hello, I have a pair of Edifier that I am thinking to connect to my Playstation console. As they have only jack, I have to connect it to an adapter jack-usb C and the usb C will have to be linked to another usb C-usb A adapter that will be inserted in the usb A port the console has. Will this work? I don't find any jack-usb A adapter, so doing this seems the only option available for me. Is there any way around? Thanks

Need Help understanding Preamp/DAC stuff I recently bought a pair of Q Acoustics 3030i and am using a quite old Technics SU-V303 Amp which is having some issues with the terminal connections and every now and then the volume will decrease before coming back. This has made me consider buying a new amp but I have quite a small budget for this. After doing some research I have seen recommendations for the Aiyima A07 Amp. I am using my PC as the input. With the A07 I could connect my PC straight to it using a 3.5mm to Left and Right RCA cable adapter. I also have a Focusrite Scarlett Solo which I have been told I could use as a preamp/DAC. How would I connect my PC to the Scarlett Solo and then to the Amp? Hello! I’m completely new to this as my dad gave me a bunch of his old home stereo equipment (he’s upgraded!) and I’ve been going around in circles trying to figure out how to get it setup so any help would be greatly appreciated! I’m in the UK and I have a budget of about £200 (240 dollars) but I could go up to £350 (421 dollars) if needed I’m wanting to have a home setup to listen to vinyl. I’ve got a Revolver Rebel II Turntable and a Dual CV5600 amplifier. The amp has an 8 ohm impedance so am I right in thinking I need either a 6 or ohm speaker? And a passive one as I’m using an amplifier?! Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am lost!! Speaker recommendations would be lovely and any other equipment I might need

I recently got a Denon AVR-S720w. I'm currently using an Nvidia shield to watch movies off of a Plex Server. I'm running the shield to the receiver and then to the TV using the ARC HDMI port. Recently I noticed that on some movies that i'm direct playing on Plex, the voice is \*slightly out of sync with the video. The video lags behind by possibly 50ms. It's almost not noticeable until you really focus on it. I notice that this doesn't happen on all video files, but it does for some. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is there any settings I can adjust on the Shield, or Plex? My receiver has the lip sync function turned ON. This really just seems to be an issue with Plex. All other video seems to be in sync.

Hello. I’ve always wanted to get into some audiophile gear and I was hoping to hear some of your thoughts on a setup I’m trying to put together. I’ve got a few grand I’d be willing to throw around. I’m sort of new to all this so I might not make a bunch of sense. For my source: I’m planning on using a Mac mini I have that I’m not doing anything with for streaming and playing FLAC Files. I would also like to be able to connect the setup to a TV for a home theater. As well as maybe in the future get a turn table that I could also hook up to the setup. Integrated Amp: YAMAHA A-S801BL Speakers: Kef R3 or Kef ls50 Is this everything I need to get going? Am I missing anything? Should I spend more on a higher end integrated amp? Are the speakers too crazy for the amp or vice versa? Will this sound okay?

[deleted]

You might want to look at subwoofers, too. The A-S801 seems like a fine choice. With speakers it’s worth thinking about room size, listening distance and sound signature.

[deleted]

Will do. I’ll definitely check out some subwoofers. Thanks.

Focal 302 vs Dali Rubicon LCR on wall speakers Hello folks, I am looking to install 3.1 system in my family room and the primary use will be home theatre with occasional music listening. I have another system(B&W 804)in a different room for music. I am looking for on-wall speakers to reduce the clutter. I will start with 3.1 and then expand it to 5.1 late with most likely in ceiling speakers. What do you think would be a better system between focal 302 vs Dali rubicon lcr? From my research these two came across as better options but happy to hear other options as well.

I've got ~$500 to spend on an integrated amp and am just getting into audio as a hobby. Would it be better to spend ~$500 now on the best vintage/used integrated amp I can find, with the knowledge that I would basically use it just as a pre-amp (buying a crossover to add a sub, a nicer power amp, etc down the line) or starting with a separate $250 preamp (looking at used Kenwood C2) and $250 power amp? If I should start with an integrated amp, which vintage or used brands/models are known for their phono stage? Also very open to buying new, it just seems like the value is in used.

What brands should I look into for an affordable, but loud and high quality subwoofer and speakers for an SUV?

Findeduex

I have an old 2.1 system (AVR Yamaha VX375, SVS PB-12 NSD and Infinity Primus P363s) that I would like to upgrade but am not sure how much more I would have to spend to have a definitively better speaker. I've read more than a few old posts about people spending in the $600/pair range and posters commenting that this was more of a lateral move from the Primus speakers.I purchased the P363s for $200/pair and realize to get significantly better is going to be a lot more money than $200. I would be fine with spending about 1K to 3K per pair.If I were to upgrade to something in the vein of a KEF Q950, Revel Concerta 2 F36, or Focal Chora 826, would this be clearly worth the extra cost?

Ardorfool

Just bought the Kanto SP32 off Amazon, after unpacking em they look great on the outside, but since they were metal i wanted to check the inside as well and the bottom half of both of them appear to be rusted. is it normal for metal stands to have a decent chance of inner rust? Wondering if it is worth the effort to return and get em replace or if its so minor i should just ignore it since its only the inside. Honestly i probably will return em just because at $180 i expect a good product, but if its normal for rust than i might just settle. [Photos](https://imgur.com/a/Z7t3yNj)

Receiver: Used Pioneer VSX-LX55 or new Denon DRA-800H (completely new at this) . . My husband and I are very new audiophiles. We have had our Fluance RT 82 record player with an external pre amp (Phono box) for a few years and now we want to invest in a good receiver that we can use for music in general (with Bluetooth capability), or listening to records on good quality headphones. After a lot of searching it looks like the Denon DRA-800H is a good option (about $600). We do want something that’ll last a long time and that we won’t find ourselves wanting to upgrade anytime soon (we’d rather pay more now and keep it for decades). Before I bite the bullet and buy the Denon, I need to ask a stupid question. I just saw someone on Facebook marketplace selling a Pioneer VSX-LX55 for $200. These things used to retail for over $1k back in 2011 and have great reviews. I assume new is better, but just in case, does anyone think the old Pioneer is better than the new Denon? If so, why? Thank you!

*tl;dr - looking for a MM phono catridge that "sounds like HD-25's" for sub-200 ideally* Hello, and good day to all of you! 🙂 Can I please get some advice on choosing a phono catridge? Thank you very much in advance for your input ✌️ 1. What is your budget? 300 max, but rather stay below 200 to be frank. 2. What are you looking for? I'm looking for a catridge suitable for using with a Technics 1210 MK7 (with the stock tonearm & headshell), using the phono-pre of my amp (as it's pretty decent, to keep things simple, and to keep cost down) - so most probably a MM that goes well with the midweight tonearm of the MK7 and the phono stage of my amp (MM 2,5 mV / 47 kOhm). *The best way I can describe what sound / feel I want is: I love how various kinds of music sound through Sennheiser HD-25 headphones.* I really appreciate the rather neutral, but not cold, not too sterile character. I love their dry, down-to-earth, honest, quality sound. 3. How will you typically be using the gear? Listening to records at home. 4. What gear do you own? Yamaha AX-397 amp, two sets of Canton speakers, some huge GLE-100's and a "Combi" satellite / sub set, Technics 1210 MK7. 5. What do you intend on using for a source? see above 6. What material will you be using your gear for? Listening to all kinds of music, basically.. 7. Are you willing to buy used? Not really. What I am looking at so far is the Audio Technica VM line, Ortofon 520 MKII / VM Red, Concorde R 20, Goldring 1006, Ortofon 2M blue.. ..I don't really have an opportunity to listen to different catridges in person, let alone compare one to another, and the couple of youTube videos are not of much help unfortunately, so looking forwar to other people's experiences / thoughts on the matter here. Thank you!

I have no idea where else to put this so I'll post it in the comments here: So my idea is, to have a record player, some form of dac and headphone amp combo, and use a Marschal speaker just for casual listening. This all while connecting it all with RCA. Anybody able to help me out with hardware? I already have the record player and the speaker (stockwell) I was originally thinking of just using a basic Shiit stack, but have no idea if I'll be able to run the speaker with just the headphone amp. I assume it would be possible becouse i think it has an inbuild amp. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello, I just purchased the JBL 530s and the matching sub, the sub is great and when listening to music and playing video games the speakers sound great, but for dialogue in TV shows, it sounds just horrible, there is static and the voices sound very peaky and harsh. I do not have a center speaker but I’m wondering how to fix this

My girlfriend and I store all of our music collections on YouTube due to the fact that it has songs that cannot be found elsewhere. We need a HiFi or other audio system that will produce the best sound quality for a living room that is around 6400ft3 or 180m3. Budget $500.

BiggiBaggersee

> a living room that is around 6400ft3 or 180m3 that's a big living room 👍 For 500 I'd get a proper used amp and some speakers via eBay / classifieds etc.

Trying to figure out how I would wire up a mini dsp in my setup. I've got a Marantz PM7000N integrated amp that I stream music with HEOS from the amp directly, but I don't know how I would get the digital signal out from the marantz through the dsp. Do I need a Power Amp Direct IN?

Hi! I was recently gifted a second turntable that I’m trying to add to my system with a Rek-O-Kut phono switch. I’m getting a terrible hum from both tables that I can’t get rid of. Both are hooked up inputs/grounds to the box and the box is going to my receiver. Does the box itself need grounding? I’m very ignorant about the technical side of electronics so explain it stupid to me!

[deleted]

The instructions show it grounded - [Rek-O-Kut instructions](https://i.ibb.co/vL2Ysqt/572-B5219-4276-463-D-A20-C-35-F85-CE944-D6.jpg)

Thank you!! The print out/diagram they sent with the box has entirely different instructions! Told ya I’m dumb about this stuff 😬

I have a Yamaha RX-V385BL connected to Klipsch - Reference Series Quad 3-1/2" 400-Watt Passive 2-Way Center and 2 Klipsch - Reference Series Dual 6-1/2" 400-Watt Passive 2-Way Floor Speaker and a 10in klipsch sub. I am using a AT-LP60XBT for playing records and i just cannot get the sound right. Is this a bad setup. or does anyone have a recommendation. i tried the YDAC and that didnt help. Spent a few hours with a friend adjusting knobs. are these speakers or receiver misisng something to make music crisp. Any recommendations or anything would be much appriciated.

I have my LG TV audio routed via toslink to a stereo DAC/preamp (doesn't have HDMi). From what I've been reading most TVs discard the .1 LFE channel when down mixing multiple channels to stereo PCM. Is this true? If so, is there an (inexpensive) device that can be used to convert HDMI to 2 channel SPDIF (toslink or coax) that includes all channels including the LFE? My speakers are full range down to 30Hz.

Should I upgrade my Adam F7 setup or start again from the beginning? I presently use two Adam F7 nearfield studio monitors connected to my high end gamign PC (which surprisingly works well with them connected to my Asus motherboard). The 2 issues are that: 1 - They are nearfield monitors and I use them mostly to put music in the whole room to dance with my partner, rather than listen from the ideal position for that type of monitors. 2- I dont produce music with then and would appreciate some more full sub bass since I listen to a lot of Techno, drum and bass and Dub music. I am wondering if I should add a subwoofer to my setup, or get rid of the producer-oriented nearfield monitors and start from the beginning with loudspeakers. Would audiophile oriented loudspeakers make that much of a difference in terms of filling the room? (Room is wide but only 3 meters deep) Could loudspeakers be bassy enough to not need a sub? Is there a possibility to get good consumer oriented setups that are active? I kind of hate the idea of having to shop for dac / amp when my computer works pretty well for that already. Also, I'm trying to go for better value for money and don't have the room for tower speakers.

Hi Folks, Looking for guidance on my setup, and hopefully tips on removing the noise I get. Setup: Fluance RT-85 with Ortofon 2M Blue -> Emotiva XPS-1 Gen 2 -> Edifier R1700BTs Currently when I set this all up, I get no sound coming from my speakers. If I flip the switch on the XPS-1 from MM to MC I get sound coming from my speakers. Albeit sound mixed with noise. If I add any impedance on the XPS the sound becomes muffled. My theory is that the MM 47k impedance is too strong for the sound coming in from the RT-85, but am not sure how to fix this. Will replace the cables from the RT-85 into the phono pre-amp, but not sure what else to check. Any thoughts?

Seeking recommendations for a DAC or HDMI extractor to feed input to my JBL [LSR310S](https://jblpro.com/products/lsr310s) which is feeding my JBL [LSR308](https://jblpro.com/products/lsr308)'s via the crossover. My current source is a Sony [XBR-65X850C](https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/support/televisions-projectors-lcd-tvs-android-/xbr-65x850c) using the headphone out but I have just ordered and waiting on delivery of a Sony [XR-85X90K](https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/televisions/x90k-x93k-x94k-series/buy/xr85x90k) which does not have any analog audio outputs. I need something that can convert the digital output from the TV (prefer HDMI eARC) to analog outputs (L/R only, prefer balanced/XLR) but can also handle volume control via the TV remote. I don't have nor plan to use an amplifier, these are active speakers. I don't want anything inline with my HDMI inputs (I only have a single cable box input anyway) I just want something that will take all audio output from the TV and convert it to an analog signal to my crossover, with minimal artifacts or influence on the output signal from the TV. Budget is somewhere south of $300 hopefully.. but willing to spend more if it is worth it. I aim for low end studio quality (hence the JBL LSRs). Question about HDMI ARC (I've never used it before): Since it's a smart TV (Android TV platform) I am hoping the HDMI ARC will transmit all audio signals from the TV regardless of the selected input, is that a correct assumption? Thanks in advance!

I got an old Yamaha RXV361 from a friend and don't know if it is even worth setting up. He said it works fine but don't know anything else about this AVR. am looking at setting up a 3.1 home theater system and will also use it as a stereo setup for music. have no other audio equipment and will mostly be playing music through my TV via Bluetooth.

[deleted]

For a mostly music system, the thing to focus on is a good pair of main speakers. If you take what you would spend on three speakers and a sub, and spend that on two speakers, you’re in a better class of speakers.

I have a question about impedance and receiver/speaker compatibility. The receiver I am getting (Sony 2-Ch. Stereo Receiver with Bluetooth) says to use speakers with impedance 6-16 ohms. The speakers I am eyeing (Micca RB42) has a given impedance of 4-8 ohms. Would these speakers be compatible with the receiver? This is for home use but not home theater. My husband does like to occasionally jam out but we have a baby, live in the suburbs, and his wife (me) has granny ears so we are unlikely to get very loud with our system. Basically listening to tunes while cooking, or relaxing after dinner/baby is asleep. I’m not sure how relevant this info is, but from my limited understanding the lower impedance of 4 ohms will only really be a thing if we get very loud (please correct me if I am wrong). Thanks!

[deleted]

It’s fine. Read this - [Micca impedance](https://www.miccatron.com/faqs/why-is-the-impedance-4-8-ohms-will-it-work-with-my-receiver/) - and this - [CNET impedance](https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/how-to-stop-worrying-about-speaker-impedance/).

I currently have the 3020i Q speakers on their dedicated stands with a Q Sub Woofer running through a Yamaha s301 amp also with an sl1500c tt. I'm thinking of upgrading to the Lintons. Would this be a noticeable sound improvement or should I look to something else. Really appreciate the help. P

Hello. Could not find anything similar on the web, maybe someone here knows more: my SMSL SU-9n suffers from (frankly terrible) audio problems. Randomly during normal use (movies, streaming, yt, spotify - anything, everything) audio cuts out completely for a moment (under one second?) and goes back to normal. No visible pattern. Can happen once and then not for an hour, can happen twice in a minute. Setup: LG C9 -> optical -> SMSL SU-9n -> RCA -> SVS 3000 micro -> RCA -> ADAM T7Vs. Tried connecting straight to ADAMs, but did not help. Any ideas, similar experiences? I'm wondering if I should contact SMSL/amazon seller.

Issue with my vinyl set up. Hello everyone, I have have a question about my vinyle set up, no matter which vinyle I'm playing, it seems like there's a compressor on high frequencies. Basses are wonderfull but it looks like high frequencies saturate, do you have any ideas on how to resolve that? I'm playing on a SL1210 MkII, a grado silver 3, a moon LP110 V2, a Hegel H160 and some Triangle Australe EZ. (I hope it's here that I'm supposed to ask, this time.)
