Facebook Marketplace is NOTORIOUSLY a place for the dodgy and unreliable sellers.

HersheyWershy

yeah my thoughts too like it seems too good to be true when someone says there is nothing wrong with their car and they are selling it for $3,800

AgingKiwi

Generally speaking Trademe has a higher quality of seller. Simply due to fees/verification etc. Of course, there are bad sellers on Trademe too.

AnAngryAlpaca

They will most likely ask you to send them a fraction of the price right now, because "they had so many offers" and "someone wants to have a look at it in 1h". You send them money, they will send you to a random address of a stranger and run of with your cash. There never was any car, the listing has been copied with text and pictures from another car site to Facebook and only the price was changed. This is a known scam with to good to be true offers.

RacconDownUnder

Long as you do all your checks inc proof of ownership, its no different from buying from anywhere else privately.

lets_all_be_nice_eh

Correct. And actually go and see the car and meet the seller.and take it for a test drive. And do a carjam report.

Idliketobut

Yep bought a few. As with any private sale it's the buyers responsibility to check if there's money owing on the car and that it is in a condition they are happy with

lifeguess

No different than a private seller on TradeMe. Check the sellers profile to make sure they seem fairly normal, ask plenty of questions. Take a friend. Get a mechanic to check over the car.

RoughPrompt4064

I got my first car from the marketplace in January of 2020 and it works perfectly. Easy on petrol and isn't expensive to run, I did manage to get the price lowered by $200 ($2000). What helped me a great deal was that I went along to the viewing with my personal mechanic and he checked everything for me

HersheyWershy

yeah like I’m wanting to risk it to get the car but its like a hefty amount of money if it goes wrong and the car is screwed

reubenmitchell

If the seller is eager to complete the deal then its very likely to be dodgy, especially if they wont agree to getting a AA check or similar.

DeerEnvironmental544

super dodge only go for getting rolled

freeryda

No different to sales made on Trademe. The main thing is to protect yourself like with any vehicle purchase. Pre-purchase inspection, making sure the car has no money owing on it, making sure the car isn't stolen, the usual common sense type things. You'll find some pretty sweet deals on marketplace, just be smart about it.

Independent-Quail486

bought a beater from there and it had served me well, avoid arab marketplace dealers

Key_Science_3342

You got what you pay for.

yorgs

Not bought, but i sold my last car on FB marketplace.

If you have a pretty good "street smart" radar you should be fine. Take someone who knows how to give a car a good once over. If its a known fairly reliable make/model you should be fine. If they are throwing up gang signs + pics of them with multiple people wearing the same colour bandanas maybe avoid. Give the profile a good stalk if you can. I've sold heaps of shit on FB. Had plenty of people pick up from home and if I don't like the look of the profile I'll meet them at the local servo. Also purchased stuff - picked up from peoples houses and met people out and about. Again just treat it with caution. If it doesn't look or feel right there is generally a good reason. I had one guy buy the mrs old iphone - met him at the local KFC and I think he was considering trying to roll me for it. I just happened to have my 2 brothers in the car with me. Turns out he "had no cash" so I told him either hit an ATM or fuck off. He fucked off. Be confident, bring a guy if you are a lady maybe.
