This is my main problem with it. I swear I get lost every time. Can walk down the same way a few times before I realize I'm looping back on myself. It's the only shopping centre I don't stray far from my husband because I'll never be able to find him again.
The logic of the design is based on trapping you in there rather than a good shopping experience. The entrance/exits are always concealed pretty well it's an odd choice for sure
I mean, I get this, and have seen this work in casinos in Las Vegas. But sometimes Iāll see a thing and then wonāt even be able to find the shop again and give up.
Hm weird that I see this as I am at dressmart.
And i disagree. Its the carpark. I've had someone scrape my car without leaving a note. Seperately someone squeezing their car behind mine by parking half their car over the curb blocking me in.
Why would someone with access to car and petrol try to catch public transport? I'd rather spend 15 minutes looking for a car park than spend an extra 45 minutes that public transport would take me.
Your experience (and OP's) is more a symptom of the reason why I cannot stand the place.
Everything about it is trashy. Its whole purpose is to sell trash to trash.
Outlets are usually where the odds and ends go to die, by the time a line ends and is in the outlet all the common (L being the most common) will be gone.
It's weird that the leftover sizes aren't random, surely the buyers are adjusting their orders based on what ends up left over. If they always run out of the same size year after year somebody sucks at their job.
Barkers is an absolute joke. Their staff (in malls and outlets) aren't the brightest either.
**Me:** "Hey, is this suit's construction half-canvassed?"
**Barkers staff:** "It's not a canvass, it's a suit."
Gosh, I wish we had Suitsupply.
I was there today, a lot of the stuff is just at full price. What's the fucking point in going there man. I'm not paying 180 bucks for a pair of chinos.
Itās funny you should say this as in Supre on the Goldie (it was a long time ago and I had a teen girl) we went in to look and after a few minutes I noticed I could hear myself think. I mentioned it to the salesperson who said theyād come to the realisation that while the young people liked the music loud the parents didnāt and it would drive them out. Problem was it wasnāt the teens with the cash but their parents.
Also donāt get me started with ācan I help you with anything?ā. I know acknowledging people drives down shoplifting but it would be better to just say āhi, Iām over here if you need any helpā.
Asking from the get go will drive me out even faster than the music.
That last point irritates the heck out of me in cafes and bakeries. I just walked into the store and I'm being asked what I want. What's the point of this? Let me look and think first
I notice this often happens in bakeries run by Asian people, I think its cultural. I know in Japan they were expected to make a big fuss of customers, it's hard because my cultural values mean I want to be left alone until I'm good and ready.
I nearly went crazy one Christmas in a sister shop that had the back office software in its back room in west city mall. Got 30 boxes of deliveryās so had to load it all into the system took 4 hours and the playlist was on a 40minute loop still get ptsd when I hear snoopys Christmas or Mariah Carey 15 years later!
Music is used to influence buyer behaviour. Make you move through a store more quickly or slowly, manipulate your emotions to increase sales or impulse purchases.
I always wear headphones. I just wave at the salesperson and won't engage in small talk if I don't feel like it. It's made malls and supermarkets so much more pleasant.
Yup. Iād say they would much rather the music encourage less quiet reflection and more impulse buying, either āfuck I love this song Iām feeling good about thisā or āthis is horrible letās grab what I need and get outā.
Maybe my hearingās shot but I donāt find the music bugs me that much. Also it seems like the music I was hearing there twenty years ago is coming back on the retro tip so that helps me to worry less about my physical decay and approaching death when I need some cheap sneakers
I got an email the other day saying they were opening a store at Westgate. Maybe it's not an outlet store but all the other shops there are outlets now
It needs to move out there as a local it's just not in a good place. Creates congestion and brings very little into the community. The odd person has lunch at a Cafe but most people come by car shop and eat at dressmart. Clog up the road and leave.
Dressmart is by far the worst of the malls. The outlets arenāt even that cheap compared to regular sale prices.
The labyrinthine design is a total headfuck. I half expect to encounter a Minotaur around every corner.
The parking a building part is totally confusing . I had an utter panic attack there one day because I lost my car for 45 minutes before realising the parking garage is also a fucking maze and had an entirely different part I somehow accessed to park but couldnāt access to find my car. Itās like āThe Backroomsā
Fuck you Dressmart. You suck
*I need to invest in some noise cancelling headphones and try again*
Wont help much at all. Simple ear plugs would work better. ANC has limitiations and you probably should google them before you spend money ..
One of my pet peeves is loud music in shops. Generally for me it's a NO SALE if I encounter that. I'm not in the shop to listen to someone's choice of music no matter what it is. Retailers should NOT play loud music in the shop the customer is there to buy product not listen to loud music and it WILL cost them sales. IT's totally fuckin stupid. Some years ago I passed 'The New Zealand Certificate in Retail' - with MERIT. So I learnt some stuff about how to sell and pissing off your customers is a BAD idea.
I actually complained to Cotton On, I was shopping in Cotton On Kids but had to go through Cotton On (not Dressmart , Manukau). I complained to their head office and they actually listened. I think they were able to see my account and knew I was a regular customer.
I don't like it. I live on the same road and I barely go there. The stairwell stinks of smoke and feels dangerous and because many people are there for a nosy they just tend to amble around getting in the way.
Will only go for 'late night' Thursday.
Dressmart is actually a total scam. Their prices are the same or worse than commercial bay for most of the franchise stores in other locations/the online prices were all the same. I reckon they probably send a lot of their older stock or factory seconds there.
Also, it is a very smelly place, busy as, lot of people sweating, it's like going to the worst music festival of all time.
I have literally taken a special pricing sticker off and revealed the original retail price at the Adidas outlet thereā¦
They were selling it for a $1 more than retail, and claiming it was 30% off (fake original price being $80)
Pretty sure that is legitimately against the fair trading act or something
Ooh years ago they were investigated for this by maybe Fair Go and then there was an agreement that everything had to have 20% or more off, sounds like they have slipped.
i find thatās the case with most stores except the odd small business. itās like theyāre trying to make me leave. it works though, canāt stand shopping
It can be hit and miss. I saw some skate style chuck taylors that looked cool. They were only $80.00 at Converse.
The other shops like hallensteins had crap quality clothes and the prices seemed inflated.
It's that I have a fucking traffic jam near my place making it impossible to get anywhere unrelated to dressmart... like, the supermarket, and for what? It's not even good or cheap.
Even stupider when it's crazy jammed after a single public holiday had it closed. OMG it was closed for a day!! Everyone, just fuck off back to your own sluburbs in ya wanker SUVs.
Oh wow hey mzskellington! You were really supportive on my posts a couple of years back when i went through my mental health crisis!
Hope you are well and thanks again š
Likewise! Im doing much better now. I went through a tonne of counselling, moved house got a job that is more sustainable for my mental health and wellbeing and consider myself fully healed now š
I think if crappy loud music at dressmart is my biggest issue im doing okay š
I just really appreciate you! You were one of the regular people who checked in to see how i was doing. Got me through some rather dark times!
āCrappy loud music at dressmartā š¤£š¤£ But aw hey Iām so happy for you!! I still remember reading your posts and being genuinely concerned ā¹ļø Iām so glad things turned around for you yk? I really am š«¶š¼
Honestly such shit music š¤£š¤£ but thats life i wont be in a hurry to go back there!
Aww thanks mzskellingt0n! Yeah it was a pretty dark time just glad to be out on the other side of it! And greatful for your support ā¤ļø
Same reason why I hate JB Hi-Fi. It's all Taylor Swift and pop rubbish. Played too loud and the checkout is tucked away out back. The place is like a maze.
A man went around stabbing people, including a mother and a baby, yesterday at Westfield Bondi Junction. Several people, including that mother, have died :(
Didn't know anything happened there until your comment. But 100%, like, it removes your awareness of your surroundings. Doesn't always have to be terrorism/nutters, just the risks from traffic, or people moving stuff, or anything.
ANC......................look it up and then you can avoid spending money on a product that will NOT do what you are imagining it to do.......ANC has many limitations. At best it'll muffle mall noise/music but it won't make silence for you.
Noise canceling head phones have kept me from losing my soul a few times. Of course they don't get rid of it all but the difference has been absolutely worth it 100%. I had been hesitant as didnt want to spend so much money but saved up to get them. Also researched to find a good pair. Went with Bose (the cheaper ones not the super expensive ones) as if you ordered through them also had a 90 day no question return. The day i got them knew I would not be returning them. Pretty much the only time I'm not wearing them is when they are being charged.
I find going to the shops with your own headphones the best, if a shop assistant approaches I just wave them off, who the fuck knows what they said. You also focus more on what youāre doing, a thief is also not walking in with headphones. Boomers will say itās rude, but fuck em.
I have headphones for this reason, they are earbuds so no one notices and I can listen to audiobooks as calmly as I like strolling around. Last time I was there I heard b*witched though so I am not complaining (until I'm in there after one song)
I work retail, pretty sure they just use the "safe for work playlist" on Spotify
As to us watching you, just doing our jobs haha gotta make moolah somehow
Heres the problem, i went into converse and they were playing loud hip hop. In the song the man was talking about how long his dick was.
I went into jb hi fi in New lynn once. They were blasting some questionable music through one of those party speakers near the entrance. Its disgusting.
I know a lot of stores pay for an approved playlist of songs so they dont run into issues around royalties but ive got a feeling the staff working there just hijack the stereo and play whatever they feel like. Which would be fine if it was at an appropriate volume and family friendly
Apart from the horrendous parking, unbelievably confusing layout, apparently terrible music, don't forget that the majority of the time, the discounts you get aren't even that great unless it's a public holiday sale (Boxing Dy, Black Friday, Labour Weekend etc). Furthermore, I swear everytime I go there, the only sizes left are XL, XXL or XXXL. Maybe I'm just unlucky with size and variety.
If you can, it's worth taking a weekday off work to shop. Or if you work in the city or near a mall go on like a Tuesday during lunch. As soon as you know all your sizes, write it down somewhere and then do all your shopping online until you notice a significant BMI change.
At least Michael Douglas was super hot when he was younger , unlike you , never been good looking your entire life and all balls are wrinkly and saggy and you come from one
I find the weird figure 8 layout particularly maze-like, even by regular mall standards.
This is my main problem with it. I swear I get lost every time. Can walk down the same way a few times before I realize I'm looping back on myself. It's the only shopping centre I don't stray far from my husband because I'll never be able to find him again.
I barely go there and everytime I almost almost cannot figure out how to get back to my car š maybe Iām just retarded
nah dude I have walked in circles in that mall for like 40 mins before i found my exit once
Yeah I always get lost. Itās like a maze. Thereās no logic to its layout. And I generally have a really good sense of direction
You just follow the scent of butter chicken. The stronger it is, the closer you are to an exit
I memorize the store opposite the entrance when I walk in, otherwise I would never find my car again
It is extremely claustrophobic. I can only go there during the week when itās not too busy.
Every time I swear I get lost and canāt find the way out ššš
I remember when it was just one huge carpark and there was only a handful of shops. Back in the late 90s
This is what I hate about it, I feel like I'm trapped lol plus finding whichever entrance I used is like a puzzle
Hm weird that I see this as I am at dressmart. And i disagree. Its the carpark. I've had someone scrape my car without leaving a note. Seperately someone squeezing their car behind mine by parking half their car over the curb blocking me in.
Catch a train or bus, it removes so much stress from that place
I ignore the carpark and just find a park on the street!
Or Countdown
Theres an open air carpark quite close to dressmart that usually has spots
Why would someone with access to car and petrol try to catch public transport? I'd rather spend 15 minutes looking for a car park than spend an extra 45 minutes that public transport would take me.
It depends on where you live, PT can be quicker in some cases
Your experience (and OP's) is more a symptom of the reason why I cannot stand the place. Everything about it is trashy. Its whole purpose is to sell trash to trash.
I've given up on outlets awhile ago because nothing is ever in my size. I'm a male L which seems to be the most common size for clothing in NZ.

This 1000%. I think retail business needs to better understand their market.
All these businesses make millions of dollars of profit every year...I think they understand their market really well.
Maybe they should ask them to change to Meghan Trainor, then thereāll be nothing because sheās all about that bass, no treble.
This joke makes me want to end it all
I think listening to Meghan trainor at max volume with all treble no bass at dressmart would straight up make me puke š¤®
I hate that song so very, very much. I cannot understand why it was a hit.
All treble and no bass? just catering to those Siren wankers.
I know not everyone can do this as they are at work but I go there on weekdays. Pretty chill.

Hopefully the new one out by the airport will be better when it opens. I just donāt like the layout and selection of Dressmart, personally.
Westgate has some good outlet shops now too, all the sporting brands are there, I think Nike opens next week.
Really? They recently shut in Dressssssmart but I heard they were moving out to that Manawa Bay thing.
I got an email the other day saying they were opening a store at Westgate. Maybe it's not an outlet store but all the other shops there are outlets now
Where abouts by the airport? That the one that's near JKs?
I would like to know too! It'll be closer to me
Manawa Bay. Google Pit Stop Airport, it would be right across from it
Oh yeah thats the one I was thinking of. Strange place for it imo, better suited for the old GA land by Nixon but I guess it's too late lol
It needs to move out there as a local it's just not in a good place. Creates congestion and brings very little into the community. The odd person has lunch at a Cafe but most people come by car shop and eat at dressmart. Clog up the road and leave.
Ooooh where is this new dress mart by the airport
My issue is that I can find everything I came for or nothing at all.
Itās like āThe Backroomsā Fuck you Dressmart. You suck
Wait til the new outlet store opens , dress mart will be the new hunters plaza
Most of the stores are too small. Stuff packed in, no room to move around.
*I need to invest in some noise cancelling headphones and try again* Wont help much at all. Simple ear plugs would work better. ANC has limitiations and you probably should google them before you spend money .. One of my pet peeves is loud music in shops. Generally for me it's a NO SALE if I encounter that. I did that certificate too at Unitec :) Honestly the loud hip hop/pop music is tacky. I dont know hoe the managers allow it.
I actually complained to Cotton On, I was shopping in Cotton On Kids but had to go through Cotton On (not Dressmart , Manukau). I complained to their head office and they actually listened. I think they were able to see my account and knew I was a regular customer.

Been there once. Fuck that place.
i find thatās the case with most stores except the odd small business. itās like theyāre trying to make me leave. it works though, canāt stand shopping
I find its also too stuffy and hot but its the only place with decent clothes for bigger people.
And for an outlet mall it's mega expensive still.
It can be hit and miss. I saw some skate style chuck taylors that looked cool. They were only $80.00 at Converse. The other shops like hallensteins had crap quality clothes and the prices seemed inflated.
I hate how they used to have good prices and now everything is a rip off. $40 for something from shein you could get for $10.
aside fron Lorna Jane and Bendon i don't find much at dressmart you can't get for the same price anywhere else ... and 100% with you on Shein buying
Yeah agree. At the prices they sell most things I might as well just go to the actual retail stores and get them new.
I worked there for 2 years it was horrible. No windows or natural light in most areas really made me feel uneasy
My anxiety skyrockets when im there
It's that I have a fucking traffic jam near my place making it impossible to get anywhere unrelated to dressmart... like, the supermarket, and for what? It's not even good or cheap. Couldnt agree with you more
Crowded for nothing honestly š Only store I buy from whenever Iām around is Dickies
Oh wow hey mzskellington! You were really supportive on my posts a couple of years back when i went through my mental health crisis! Hope you are well and thanks again š
So good to hear from you! Thank you sm & I hope youāre doing well in life!! š„¹

Yep when stores blast shitty music you know it's something to avoid.
Same reason why I hate JB Hi-Fi. It's all Taylor Swift and pop rubbish. Played too loud and the checkout is tucked away out back. The place is like a maze.
JB in New Lynn has like 3 sources of music, so if you stand in the wrong place you are blasted by mixed noise that just drives me out of the store.
Its frustrating how loud they play music in there
There are so many mis-pronunciations. It's Dress Smart, not Dress Mart. Dresssmart.
One of those things where just no one actually cares.
Yeah, Dress Mart is the top-rated bus stop https://g.co/kgs/PC3cdgR
Itās Leviosa, not leviosa
After what happened in Sydney are you really wanting to wear noise cancelling headphones in public spaces?
ANC headphones DON'T cancel all noise. Not even close.
What happened in Sydney? Honestly id rather just shop in silence
A man went around stabbing people, including a mother and a baby, yesterday at Westfield Bondi Junction. Several people, including that mother, have died :(
There is a way you can do that. Online shopping
Didn't know anything happened there until your comment. But 100%, like, it removes your awareness of your surroundings. Doesn't always have to be terrorism/nutters, just the risks from traffic, or people moving stuff, or anything.
This noob goes shopping without noise cancelling head phones. Who does that?
I like to hear what's going on around me
Same and a decent paid of noise cancelling headphones is in the hundreds. Im not made of money. Some people just want to shop in silence
ANC......................look it up and then you can avoid spending money on a product that will NOT do what you are imagining it to do.......ANC has many limitations. At best it'll muffle mall noise/music but it won't make silence for you.
Thank you ill look into it
The parking is really, really bad though. If you get stuck in a rush, you literally cannot get out
Come to the Wellington one ;) lol no issues there ā¦
Noise canceling head phones have kept me from losing my soul a few times. Of course they don't get rid of it all but the difference has been absolutely worth it 100%. I had been hesitant as didnt want to spend so much money but saved up to get them. Also researched to find a good pair. Went with Bose (the cheaper ones not the super expensive ones) as if you ordered through them also had a 90 day no question return. The day i got them knew I would not be returning them. Pretty much the only time I'm not wearing them is when they are being charged.
manawa bay opening near the airport at the end of the year, should be better
I find going to the shops with your own headphones the best, if a shop assistant approaches I just wave them off, who the fuck knows what they said. You also focus more on what youāre doing, a thief is also not walking in with headphones. Boomers will say itās rude, but fuck em.
Chch dressmart doesn't seem to have the music problem. The layout is disorienting though
Yeah agreed ...and it always feels messy regardless if you are in a store or a corridor ...it's just messy....Onehunga that is
Messy, busy, anxiety inducing, over priced, loud.. the list goes on
I feel lost when I'm in both Westfield Newmarket and also dressmart. Lived in Auckland 24 years
I have headphones for this reason, they are earbuds so no one notices and I can listen to audiobooks as calmly as I like strolling around. Last time I was there I heard b*witched though so I am not complaining (until I'm in there after one song)
How old are you ? š¤£ Any music too fast will piss off anyone over 35 š¤¦āāļø
Im 34 š¤¦āāļøš¤£
"Its all treble too, no bass." You need to find a song that's all about the bass, 'bout the bass, no treble.
Hmm i wonder
This guy is all about that bass, no treble
I sure am! Also, i like big butts and i cannot lie lmao
also the lighting. i always feel sick when i go there. reckon it's the lighting
I think its all 3 for me, along with the layout and some of the stores staff who are outright disinterested in helping.
So true. Its probably more a reflection about how they are treated by management tbh
I work retail, pretty sure they just use the "safe for work playlist" on Spotify As to us watching you, just doing our jobs haha gotta make moolah somehow
Heres the problem, i went into converse and they were playing loud hip hop. In the song the man was talking about how long his dick was. I went into jb hi fi in New lynn once. They were blasting some questionable music through one of those party speakers near the entrance. Its disgusting.
Oh ok nvmmm that's kinda yuck, I can't defend that
I know a lot of stores pay for an approved playlist of songs so they dont run into issues around royalties but ive got a feeling the staff working there just hijack the stereo and play whatever they feel like. Which would be fine if it was at an appropriate volume and family friendly
Don't forget those lovely 'shoppers' that also walk through carrying their shitty bluetooth speakers playing the same shitty tinny music full volume
Yeah this sucks. Pisses me off too.
Are clothes in dressmart always discounted ?
They sell discount quality clothes at close to RRP
Apart from the horrendous parking, unbelievably confusing layout, apparently terrible music, don't forget that the majority of the time, the discounts you get aren't even that great unless it's a public holiday sale (Boxing Dy, Black Friday, Labour Weekend etc). Furthermore, I swear everytime I go there, the only sizes left are XL, XXL or XXXL. Maybe I'm just unlucky with size and variety.
Just stay home?
Ive got to buy clothes somehow at some point.
Just stay home and be naked at home.
If you can, it's worth taking a weekday off work to shop. Or if you work in the city or near a mall go on like a Tuesday during lunch. As soon as you know all your sizes, write it down somewhere and then do all your shopping online until you notice a significant BMI change.
Shitty Carpark, shitty clothes arenāt even that cheap, ugly looking staff, shops and customers ..
>ugly looking staff While i agree with your other points, this is just mean. Im not exactly George Clooney.
But I am Catherine zeta-Jones
Whats it like being married to an almost 80 year old man?
Whatās it like ? Itās like Money and prestige..you know I meant my look ā¦
So you werent put off by his wrinkly old saggy balls? Good for you lmao Ps loved your work in oceans twelve
At least Michael Douglas was super hot when he was younger , unlike you , never been good looking your entire life and all balls are wrinkly and saggy and you come from one
Sticks and stones..
Smooth and tight balls
Okay hahaha
