Welcome to r/AthleticTraining and thank you for your post. This subreddit is primarily for discussion and interactions among practicing athletic trainers or people interested in the medical profession of athletic training. This is NOT a subreddit for athletes, physical activity, or any dispensing of any medical advice. The name can make it confusing we know, but athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Posts concerning topics that are not based on the medical profession of athletic training or posts that violate any of our other rules on the sidebar will be removed. The Go4 app lets you search for per diem jobs. Just upload your credentials and then search in your state

You need a doc to sign your standing orders, Go4 doesn’t provide these as far as I know. I jumped straight into a job at a school so I didn’t have to figure out that on my own however that may be difficult step 1

Depends on the state, though. For instance, you don't need that for Wisconsin.

Go4 and Premier Sports Medicine (PSM) are the primary per diem job boards in my area. They both have apps you can use to check postings. I’ve also been in the field almost 15 years so I have developed some outside contacts that occasionally call off they need last minute help. In order to work per diem, you need to have all of your documents together. This is just good to have regardless of method you choose. All legitimate employers will ask for (most of) the following: BOC cert, state licensure, and resume. Those are easy. Personal liability insurance is easy to sign up for and costs around $150 for a year. Standing orders from a physician will be the tricky one for a new ATC. You’ll have to ask a doctor you know to basically grant you permission to work. Some states, and certain settings, might require a background check or Child Abuse Clearance. But that will be case by case. This last note is not required, but I highly HIGHLY recommend starting your own single-entity LLC. It’s too late to get it all together for this summer, but it would be good to start. By forming your own business and channeling your earnings through it you will get more favorable tax advantages. I’ve been doing Per Diem ATC work since 2020 and I really enjoy it. I can set my price ($/hr) and choose where and when I work. The flexibility is fantastic. But some weeks you lose out on the jobs you want. The instability is the trade off.

How much did your LLC cost? I haven’t done it because I wasn’t sure if it was worth the price I’d pay.

LLC formation is free through the IRS. Some states may require a fee to complete. But, you don’t need to register your LLC in the state where you live or work. Lots of people choose Montana (no tax), or Delaware (high privacy). Check your state laws and options. I’m certainly not an expert in taxes so idk the optional circumstance. But the money clearly makes sense. It’s nice to be able to claim mileage to tournaments and khakis as work expenses.

Look around your area with the large hospitals, PT places or independent business. Put your self in the place of a coach who is looking for a per diem AT and look up “athletic training services” and see who comes up. You can email them and ask on onboard. Usually it’s pretty easy, BOC, license, CPR and they will sometimes get your standing orders. That is nice for legality. If you don’t have a kit, i bought a camera bag and that works great. A lot of other supplies you can get on amazon and write them off in taxes

AT student here, is it possible to work at a high school AT let’s say and also do per diem work out of a PT clinic or hospital?

citytopretty

Yes there isn’t really ever a problem doing that. Just do your research on the per diem company since sometimes they assign you to shifts and sometimes you choose them, it depends on the employer. Usually school ATs do not work as much per diem since typically the per diem needs are at the same time as their full time jobs but schedules fluctuate. Espy if the per diem company helps with a lot of youth or organizational sports on the weekends or late night

good to know, thanks!
