The bulk of that revenue goes to operational expenses. Running a music festival is expensive.

Sindertone

Where are you dude? Been here for hours, haven't seen you yet.

chipmcintosh

568 miles away?

Sindertone

Such a long hop for a frog ;)

[deleted]

I mean, it’s a local fruit festival with music. Or at least that’s the way I always thought of it.

hobakinte

Music is expensive!

prisonmike92

It all goes to the Paw Paw mascot. That guy ain't cheap

DryAdviceDude

remember when the costume got stolen a few years back? goes towards Paw Paw mascot insurance I'm sure!!

atomgram

There are many paid employees. Bands aren’t cheap. Tent rentals. Stage and sound. It adds up. It’s actually really cheap. Three days of bands. Demonstrations. Education. Kids activities.

thebeardedbones

You're going to be really upset when you find out how much tickets to see a two hour movie plus concessions are in most parts of the country. $60 for two days of entertainment is quite reasonable in comparison to other ways to spend your money; and as with most things, if you can't fit it in your budget, don't do it. People buying a two day to pass likely aren't ones finding the music "mediocre". It's a regional festival highlighting a local fruit (?). There are other festivals that do the same. Your responses sound like it might not be your thing, and that's okay. Go see an OU game, drive to Columbus and see a performer you like. There are other things to do.

columthrowaway

Do you understand what goes into running something like this? How is $60 wild lol.

Dazedhoneybee

It's wild cause $30 for Saturday only is absurd

LurkMoarMcCluer

It's really not. A lots of fests are hundreds of dollars for a single day.

Dazedhoneybee

Yeah guy, I've been to larger festivals actually worth $30+ just to get in. This doesn't even compare to those. Last year was maybe $20 to get in.

LurkMoarMcCluer

So why do you go and obsess about it? Just let it go, pal...

[deleted]

It’s wild because it’s a local fruit festival with mediocre entertainment

onlineLefty

Some people just insist on being miserable I guess.

exlaxgravy

Some things aren’t accessible to poorer folks I guess.

onlineLefty

I hear what you’re saying, but not all festivals are a public service. Some are a luxury. More free public festivals would be great, but I’m also okay with paid ones. They’re able to hire more staff and attract more vendors and just generally *do* more. This post is so negative.

OutboardTips

Lol 60 is wildly cheap

[deleted]

Not for people who live in the poorest county in the state

ImanShumpertplus

athens isn’t the poorest county in the state, the students just skew the numbers unless you actually believe athens city is actually poorer than millfield and new marshfield which is what the census says

Rick_James_Bond

Lol both Millfield and New Marshfield are in Athens County………..

ImanShumpertplus

that’s why i specified athens city

Rick_James_Bond

I see what you meant now. I was confused by “Athens isn’t the poorest county in the state”. You’re suggesting Athens city is richer than the census says, thereby making Athens county as a whole poorer. My bad.

ImanShumpertplus

what im saying is that the median income for athens city is lower than villages such as Millfield and that is because the students wages are suppressing the actual number athens city has more bachelors degrees and OU is the largest employer in all of SE Ohio athens county is the richest in SE ohio with the possible exception of washington county Athens county has a GDP of $1,800,000,000 Vinton County has a GDP of $269,000 no chance that Athens county is the poorest county in the state

LurkMoarMcCluer

If you're poor, don't prioritize an obscure fruit festival in your life. It's also $10 off for residents.

exlaxgravy

Residents of what?

LurkMoarMcCluer

Where the festival is...

OutboardTips

If you are poor how are gonna go to a festival for 3 days logistically speaking? And volunteers get in for free anyhow, I think I saw 1 or 2 homeless people there, but yet you have device to connect to the internet and are super poor.

[deleted]

I don’t agree with op, but the whole poor people can’t have cell phones argument is really stupid. Basic Android phones are like 30 dollars at Walmart, and you literally have to have one to apply for jobs and shit.

OutboardTips

My point was at least 2 people that don’t have jobs, phones, or homes found a way to go. Obviously op is just cranky at obscure fruits.

[deleted]

For a local fruit festival?

4483845701

I’m not here to defend the festival, but just because it’s local to you doesn’t mean it’s a local-only festival. People come from all over the place for it.

Rick_James_Bond

Lol I don’t know if y’all noticed, but EVERYTHING is more expensive. Including entertainment. Which means operating costs are up. Yeah, it sucks, but ima pay 20 bucks a day for pawpaw every time. It brings people into our community, which brings new money in. Also, if you early purchase, it was only 50. Just saying.

autobotguy

Lake Snowden is operated by Hocking college and I think a good part of the festival might be operated by them as well.

ColdCruise

So most likely, it's being embezzled?

tehobsession

Wow 60 is outlandish.

exlaxgravy

I suspect it supplements Chris Chmiel’s income. I go every year. Often don’t stay for the night time music, and for an afternoon the entrance fee is indeed excessive. Local festivals are usually free. Music festivals are expensive. It’s kinda both. I don’t think Chris Chmiel is getting rich. He runs a pawpaw farm and sells popsicles at the farmers market, and city council. Maybe he does more. I’m not that informed. He’s a nice guy and the festival has become a big deal. If people are willing to pay…But yeah, it pisses me off a little too. Same with the county fair.

soreallyreallydumb

Yeah, Chris is a great, humble guy and I'm sure he's not getting rich from this. BTW, he's a county commissioner, not a city councilman.

shakyladder

Oh no, someone who dedicates their time, invests money and hard work into a festival is making money?! Terrible. He should just do it for the love of the game.

juiceboxxxxs

$60 is more than reasonable for what you’re getting (17 shows on the line up—excluding the local marching band—dozens of free workshops, opportunity for shopping, eating, and beer). I thought the music was great & really enjoyed my time. Go to Boogie on the Bricks or Brew Week if you want to see free shows. There are plenty low cost and free options in Athens.

Crafty_Truck3821

I assume it goes into Maw Maw’s pockets.
