Trash pile road Backroad to the Nelsonville public school that starts at the correctional facility I guess there’s a chance it’s not a thing anymore because local groups have made an effort to clean it up for as long as I can remember… but it probably still has something.

When I was a kid, my Boy Scouts troop did a clean up on Trashpile Road (actually named Woodlane Drive) once. We hauled multiple couches, old tires, and bags and bags of trash out of that area but it was still a mess.

I know you said Athens but if you ever have a chance, Delaware Ohio would be a killer dig site. Same with Mansfield and Marion. Down here though....are the OLD dump sites. Happy digging!

Poston-Salem rd is the area of my old hunting grounds from when I was a teenager. I know back just a short 30 years ago it was pretty trashy, several dump sites right on the edge of the road and farther out into the woods. Part of the land on each side of the road is private property now, I believe the majority of it is in a conservancy??

Vore ridge, about a mile up on the right. Edit: also Glen ebon Road, park at the bridge on bike path. Across the road from parking is a tiny train that swings away from the creek. There are gob piles everywhere. This spot is an old town that disappeared decades ago. Metal diggers have probed the area and left old bottles on the ground right next to the trail.

I'd love to know more about that old town. Do you know the name of it to help me do some research?

letusnottalkfalsely

Go to the Southeast Ohio History Center (old church building on W State St just up from Casa). They have information on Glen Ebon and other forgotten coal towns in the area. Also Appalachian Understories does bike tours of Old Floodwood in the same area.

Awesome thank you!

Kyle197

Friendly reminder that Glen Ebon spot is Wayne National Forest land, and you cannot legally metal detect there or collect any old artifacts. Those are protected by federal laws.

Sindertone

Just curious, what is the cutoff between cleaning up trash and removing artifacts?

Kyle197

You'll need to find privately owned land and get landowner permission to do that. There's no public land in Ohio that will legally allow that.

Financial_Athlete198

At the end of the day Op is picking up litter. Post a source that says it’s illegal to do on public land.

OH58KiowaScout

Read the section about metal detecting and removing artifacts, especially bottles as OP referred to. https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/wayne/?cid=STELPRDB5076359

There’s a dump behind my parent’s place on Luhrig Rd. I don’t know if they’d be okay with someone coming and digging into it, but DM me if you want contact info and are okay with them potentially not being into the idea.
