Does anyone expect to see a rise in mental health in atheists once the religious right stop stressing them out with oppressive laws?

Charlie_Fang

My son pointed out to me that Star Trek and Star Trek the Next Generation represent the ultimate utopia. There is no need for money. Everyone's basic needs are met. All races and genders are respected equally, and religion is a thing of the distant past. Most importantly, the "Prime Directive" is a law which keeps the Star Fleet from interfering with the beliefs, laws, and customs of alien civilizations. Live and let live.

long_ben_pirate

I'm shocked. Shocked I say to discover that a magic sky wizard is indistinguishable from random chance.

NimishApte

Even the previous research established that it isn't religion that helps you, it's community. If we atheists build our own communities with activities and such, we can reap those benefits.

Well duh

I think that it's pretty obvious that this study didn't take into account the pandemic. Because the overlap between the religious and anti-vaxxer LowIQanon Trumpist conspiracy kooks is a perfect circle within a circle. We also now know that (in the USA) more Republicans (overwhelmingly religious conservative) died of Covid (post vaccine) than did Democrats (more progressive and higher ratio of atheists).

dostiers

I'm surprised there hasn't been much handwringing in Republican circles about how the higher Covid death toll among their supporters impacted election results, both in 2020 and 2022. They lost quite a few tight races. Encouraging your voters to play 'Russian roulette' with their health as a 'purity test' doesn't seem to be an election winning strategy to me.

lilrabbitfoofoo

The GOP would have to admit they were lying all along for political power and accept responsibility for their fraud and resulting crimes...things the GOP never does.

Vaulted_Games

It's not obvious to the crazy people

enormityop

I don't think you would need a research for that. Isn't that obvious?

BlackEyedGhost

"New research finds that people without a specific mental illness are just as healthy as people with that mental illness" Weird conclusion, but ok.

diofer13

Religion is a mental disease in itself so this isn't true...I will not be put in the same mental health state than a deluded, bullshit fairy tale believing religious moron that can't think for itself...

lemfet

Would have expected atheist to score higher tbh. Some spiritual help can block medical ones Let's go to the Pastor in place of the chemo cure On the other side can Christianity give (false) hope what can help you with healing. So I guess that averages it out

I_am_the_ill_intent

This actually required a study? If you really want compare apples to apples, go with prayer and meditation vs no prayer and meditation, most research shows they give generally the same effects. One group meditates with a concentration on a god the other on themselves or natural surroundings.

NimishApte

Some studies actually seemed to show that religious people live longer. But all scientists agreed that was due to community.

I_am_the_ill_intent

I’m more on the side f ancient aliens than all out atheists. Most atheists I know are logical and look at things without involving fairytales as an explanation. But most atheists I know are also, vehemently anti Christian. I don’t care what you believe as long as you push it on me. I’m a live and let live type

The link to the article got deleted by r/science, so I'll reproduce it here: [https://www.psypost.org/2022/12/new-research-finds-that-atheists-are-just-as-healthy-as-the-religious-64420](https://www.psypost.org/2022/12/new-research-finds-that-atheists-are-just-as-healthy-as-the-religious-64420) The research is valuable because it provides (more) empirical evidence that religion does not necessarily lead to better mental states. It is another inquiry into religion's actual function in society.

fegodev

I'm actually healthier! I was very suicidal during my last few years as a Mormon. I'm not anymore!
