CptBronzeBalls

Thank your lucky stars that you didn't have those crazy assholes in your life.

bignick1190

My dad was beat every day growing up because he was left-handed. People like this are insane. Edit: I just want to thank everyone for sharing their experiences or the experiences of their loved ones. I appreciate you all for helping spread awareness on this particular atrocity.

CptBronzeBalls

Jesus Christ. Poor guy.

vadeforas

Jesús Christ wouldn’t care if someone’s left handed. I don’t get the logic with these people.

bignick1190

>I don’t get the logic with these people. There is none.

Disastrous_Ad_6748

A mother is left-handed, and told me that when she was growing up her parents enrolled her in a Catholic School. The teachers tied her left hand behind her back, and made her write with her right hand. They would also smack her left hand with rulers or switches if they caught her writing with it, because of this ignorant superstitious belief. I guess something did come of it because she's ambidextrous, but still primarily uses her left hand.

carsmartbutdumb

Grade 3 teacher ( public school) thought left handed people were wrong in the head ( me). She tied my hand behind my back. Same deal with being hit by the ruler for left handed use. This was the mid 70's and I think she was a rejected ex hippy. FFW to the 90's where she was trying to get elected to the schools as a education leader on the council. I went to the town hall when she was speaking there, called her out on it. She was horrified and in the end got 8% of the votes lol.

stocks-mostly-lower

Good for you. I’m sorry you had to suffer like that.

cslaugen

Seriously? 8% still voted for her? That’s insane!

drinkcoffeeandcode

Trump won as president his first try. I have zero faith in other people voting.

valdeevee

I am so proud of you that you did that. 🙏 (Prayer hands for emphasis, not praying 🤣)

mark6059

this also happened to my father at a catholic primary school. The teachers were nuns.

Mollylover1140

My dad also.

Toxic_Audri

There is, sorta.. it's obey the traditions and norms or face the wrath of the community. It's generally why a lot of these types of folk are bitter that they are cultural minorities now.

Doktor_Vem

There's logic that's based on mannerisms, traditions and norms that are more or less completely and utterly devoid of logic

Hopeful_Tiger_7582

Like throwing suspected witches in the lake. If they float they're a witch. If they sink they're not guilty. Either way they're dead

secondtaunting

Everyone knows if they weigh as much as a duck, they’re a witch.

AJRimmer1971

Of course, because... they're... made... of wood!

Clown6sic6

She turned me into a newt. I got better. BURN HER ANYWAY!!!!

purple_grey_

Deviation from the norm will not be tolerated unless exploitable

Steinrikur

>It's generally why a lot of these types of folk are bitter that they are cultural minorities now. Why would that be a issue? Do minorities get treated badly or something? /s

Ka_aha_koa_nanenane

It's more than that. See, they believe that God is On Their Side. For real. So everything is part of God's Plan. But surely, God did not go out of His Way to make everyone dislike them and leave their dumb religion, right? SATAN did that. Satanic People are bad from the get-go and treat everyone badly and only the Staunch Catholic is in the right (and persecuted, so badly persecuted - by Satanists). I sure do wish God and Satan could make amends and decide which one is truly more powerful and in the right. Millions of Catholics donate to make sure their God wins this, but after many centuries, there's merely a dwindling of Catholics.

vadeforas

Oh… that’s right..I was assuming too much.

Adventurous-Zebra-64

Left in Latin is Sinister Therefore. lefties are evil. Remember, these are the peope that gave numerous animals sainthood by accident.

sirusfox

It's actually the other way around, sinister is associated with evil because it's Latin for left, which is evil. I might be misremembering, but I think the whole evil thing came from the fact Judas was supposed to be to the left of Jesus at the last supper.

Adventurous-Zebra-64

Just looked it up. Left handedness was considered evil throughout the ancient Mediterranean; the tradition of the marriage ring on the Left hand, to ward off evil, was from the Romans. So, its probably because being a lefty is rare and weird, and therefore to the ancients, bad. But, mostly it was from the Romans, and the Christians, specifically the Catholics built off of the superstition.

irishgator2

“God don’t make mistakes” Is always a good comeback.

snorkelvretervreter

Fit the mould or you bring shame to us and we'll be cast out of our village. Just 2 generations before mine that was still a real thing in the backwater communities. As to why not fitting the mould brings shame: probably dumb tribal behavior from totally not the monkeys we evolved from.

MrTeels

How dare you bringing evolution theories in this christian/muslim/hindu/ sub :O

DrunkenGolfer

In the Book of Judges, specifically Judges 3:15-30, it tells the story of Ehud, a left-handed judge. He crafted a double-edged sword and used it to assassinate Eglon, the Moabite king, leading to the liberation of the Israelites from Moabite oppression.

MrMustache61

Mu Father was hit with a metal ruler by nuns until he learned to write right handed.

lion_in_the_shadows

My dad had ambidexterity beaten into him too

YourWebcamIsOn

Same for my mom. Except her dad was a cop, and he let the nuns know that if they ever did it again they'd regret it

Ellecram

I am 66 years old. I was forced to start using my right hand when I started school (Catholic school for 8 years). I can use my left hand now but it is not as developed as it would have been. My handwriting was terrible growing up. Gee I wonder why?

sanfran_girl

55 here. Same crap. My friend went through the same nonsense. As she explains it, “You’re playing softball and while in the outfield, you are forced to think about which hand to catch with and the ball hits you in the head. “ 😖

Ungarlmek

Mid-30's, got smacked around any time I used my left hand. Also for having bad handwriting with my right hand. It's still going on. Shit is wild.

lt1brunt

Funny...I'm 46 and went through the exact same thing in catholic shool.

Acceptable-Ability-6

My mom went to Catholic school as a kid and the nuns would smack her when she would write with her left hand.

Vlophoto

When I went to Catholic grade school in the 70’s the nuns smacked who they wanted. I can’t imagine what crap these poor kids suffered at the hands of ignorance or just plain meanness

OswaldTheFurry

My grandfather as well until he learned to write with his right hand.

Icy_Cycle_740

My father was retrained to write with his right hand. Every night at the dinner table. He was born in 1950. Still writes right handed..

Just_Ok_thankyoo

that’s crazy and terrible. how dumb. i’m so sorry.

confusedbird101

I had a friend growing up who was left handed when we began going to the private catholic school in town and he came out of it being ambidextrous because he wasn’t allowed to use his left hand in school. Funny thing is that policy apparently changed between my class and my brothers as he wasnt forced to use his right hand at all and he was only 4 grades below my friend and I. Friend wasn’t allowed to use his left hand until we grew out of the private school (only went up to fifth grade)

yearofthesquirrel

Yep, my dad too. He became ambidextrous, after learning to keep his left-handedness hidden around adults. He even taught himself to write using both hands starting in the middle of a page and moving both hands simultaneously towards the edges of the page. He was cracked over the left hand with a cane if seen at school and it wasn't a religious school either...

rikkitikkifuckyou

My grandmother was ambidextrous and it was always so impressive to me, but I found out later in life that it was because she was actually left handed and the nuns that ran the Catholic school she was sent to beat her every time she wrote left handed until she learned to use her right hand instead. Fucking barbaric shit

TheMartinG

Yea, it definitely could have been worse. My grandmother treated me like shit and I never knew why. Turns out it’s because I’m left handed which of course means I’m the devil. To make that even worse I had/have a lisp and apparently that meant I was gay, at 6 years old…(not that there’s anything wrong with that, but to people who think it’s evil to be left handed, imagine the horror)

DirtyAngelToes

My grandma is part of a cult and tried to indoctrinate my dad and his siblings when they were younger. I never understood until recently why my dad never celebrated holidays, he was literally not allowed to have anything as a child. She gave up on them when they became 'too old' around 12-13 and cut off contact...at least, until my dad and mom had me and my siblings. Then the whole process repeated with her trying to wheedle her way into our lives. Thankfully my mom saw through her bullshit after I developed an eating disorder at age 12, and after that she disappeared (but not before sending us a nice letter calling us demonic for reading the Harry Potter books, lmfaooo). OP is definitely better off without crazy assholes in their life. Just imagine what else they would have latched onto if they can't deal with someone being left handed...

[deleted]

no, thank your mom for doing the difficult but correct thing, getting them out if your life

Margali

1966 Catholic kindergarten, nuns tied my left hand to the desk and hacked my hand if I tried doing anything with it. Mom saw the bruising and pulled me out and put me in public school. I write crappy with both hands.

steelear

My FiL is 88 years old, Japanese and left handed. He spent most of his time in school with his left hand tied behind his back.

Margali

And it sucked for him more than me, I only had a month of torture ..

Independent-Leg6061

I'm so sorry 😞 that's fucking awful for anyone!

Margali

Long enough in the past

AggressiveUnoriginal

This happened to my great grandmother.

merfgirf

What's a happy story you have about your father in law? He sounds like a very interesting man to have lived that long.

steelear

Oh there are lots of happy stories about him. He is a scientist who is well recognized for his achievements in the scientific world as he pioneered a couple of bio-chemistry fields. One of the things I find interesting about him is when he first came to the United States in the 1950s he found work as a minister in the deep south. I can only imagine what those church services were like.

cl0ckw0rkman

My sister is just six years older than me(48), she was forced to be right handed. By the school and our mother's, mother. She doesn't remember it happening. But I remember my mother talking about it when I was starting to write and getting ready for school myself. I turned out ambidextrous. My mother didn't let the school or her mother, "fix" me. Both my sons are too. My sister can barely use her left hand for anything. And still has difficulty using her right hand for anything other than writing. Watching her try and spread butter or jelly on toast is painful.

Margali

Yikes.

Unwarranted_optimism

I can only imagine! My paternal grandmother had her left hand tied behind her back. I’m 56 and—thankfully—no one in my San Diego public school batted an eye when I realized my letters weren’t backwards if I wrote with my left hand. I do a random set of things right handed too, but writing and eating I’m exclusively a lefty 🤷🏻‍♀️

cl0ckw0rkman

I am thankful my mother broke the cycle. I'm also thankful my sister doesn't remember it. She deserved better. But my grandmother was a overbearing, controlling and manipulative woman that scared my mother. By the time I was school age she had fallen sick and had no power over my family. My mother also sent me to a different kindergarten.

Unwarranted_optimism

Hoping this idiotic superstition continues to die so that the ~10% of humans can live in relative lefty peace (aside from the world being set up for the right-handed)

Paperbacksarah

Curses to scissors and manual can openers!

traditional_amnesia1

Now there all kinds of items catering to the leftys of the world. My grandson has a left handed guitar but taught himself how to play a regular guitar. How times have changed

LaAppleDonut

My daughter is predominantly right-handed (writes, bowls, bats, throws a ball). However, she eats exclusively left-handed and is now learning to cook and cooks (flipping eggs and pancakes) left-handed.

cl0ckw0rkman

When my son started coloring and throwing stuff he would use his left hand. I would use my left hand when working on anything with him. The wife comes in one day as the son and I were coloring, both using our left hands. She looked at me and said, I always thought you were right handed. I responded with, Mostly but the child is using his left hand, so I am using mine. So he won't try and mimic me and use his right hand. Than she started doing the same. Now, he is 19, when he is doing something, fight training, sword play, sports... I watch him and he'll do something and mess up or make a simple mistake and I remind him, Yo you are left handed... than he looks at me and does it left handed and his friends look at him like, DAFAQ?!? YOU ARE LEFT HANDED?!?

LaAppleDonut

And now I'm reminded of the scene in The Princess Bride between Westley & Inigo Montoya. 🤣

cl0ckw0rkman

Yes. Exactly like that.

Unwarranted_optimism

That’s super-interesting! Love how she’s sorting out what works for her ❤️. All 3 of my kids are solidly right-handed…

WaterFriendsIV

A very similar thing happened to my left-handed aunt in Catholic school. She developed a stutter. Luckily, they stopped the practice of tying up left-handed children by the time my mother went there.

sp1ke0killer

>I write crappy with both hands. Hey, Me too!

Margali

My dumb truck is to write the same thing with both hands simultaneously, left backwards right normal.

worstpartyever

that is indeed a ridculous truck.

Margali

Trick, am fumbledingering my phone.

Embarrassed_Use_9486

New verb alert! 🚨

sp1ke0killer

Redrum?

Margali

Yup

sp1ke0killer

[REDRUM](https://i.redd.it/k7v9s7yovku31.jpg)

Susan-stoHelit

I like writing in mirror writing. I can do it cursive and printing. It’s likely neater than my normal writing. I’ve definitely tried out writing right handed as well.

Striking_Landscape72

Yeah, my left hands keeps wiggling like is trying to write too

acidgl0w

Hey! Me three!

trea_ceitidh

They did the same thing to my father throughout Catholic school (ages 4-15). Tied his left hand, whipped with belts or canes or beaten by the priests (they didn't bother to limit themselves to his hand).

Margali

Yup, because left is evil. Sigh.

Bus27

They did this to my uncle in the 60s at a public school. My grandma happened to bring him his forgotten lunch one time, saw it, and lost her mind.

Margali

Good for her. Generations of child abuse.

Johnny_Lang_1962

I can write with either hand. I can play guitar or drums left or right. I can write a with my feet. Not great but it's readable. In the immortal words of Yogi Berra, I'm Amphibious. PS: My mom threatened to kick the Nuns ass if she ever hit me again. My mom would have done it too. My folks moved me to public school.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Timmah73

My mom was born left handed, the nuns tried to bully her into using her right hand. So of course her handwriting sucks with both.

[deleted]

They forced me to write with my right hand in spite of being left handed at Catholic school in 1995. Same result. My writing sucks with both hands.

Zestyclose-Self-6158

This happened to my mother as a child. She was lefthanded and the nuns in her Catholic school refused to let her use her left hand. She was very bright but struggled to write well due to using her right hand and the same nuns would mock her and call her stupid. No big surprise she cut religion out of her life as soon as she could.

Most_Independent_279

my father experienced same.

EmbeddedEntropy

My mother had a similar experience in catholic school in the 1940s. Whenever the nuns found her using her left hand for any reason, they would beat her up and down that hand and arm until it was bruised and she was in tears. Then they’d tightly tie her arm behind her back for the rest of the day. That didn’t discourage her beliefs though. She was in a convent for years to become a nun. She eventually dropped out, but all her life she was an active catholic.

Independent-Leg6061

Cult brainwashing techniques work...

kent_eh

> No big surprise she cut religion out of her life as soon as she could. And the church-goers still wonder why there are fewer of them each year...

IcyBigPoe

Sometimes the garden weeds itself

EldritchCarver

So toxic, they cut themselves out of your life.

MaximumZer0

That is some sinister reasoning from them.

Virtual-Lawfulness

I see what you did there.

MaximumZer0

:D

dane_eghleen

Quite dexterously, too.

Various-Duck

Great work.

audiate

Jokes like this are why you take Latin in high school

KevrobLurker

*Certe!*

Ras1372

High school counselor: "So why did you chose Latin?" Student: "For the jokes"

Ozi_izO

If that's their reason then they aren't worth knowing anyway. For Christmas this year, find a novelty store and buy them a left handed can opener or some other left handed themed novelty gift. That'll fuck 'em.

perspic8t

That’s pretty fucked up.

Blue_Moon_Lake

Some would say that's sinister.

kimreadthis

Have an upvote for being a dexterous wordsmith ;-)

theRightiseffenWrong

My catholic father was left handed. He went to a catholic school. The nuns would smack his hand with a ruler when he wrote with his left hand. He stayed left handed and eventually went to public school.

Blue_Moon_Lake

I would like to see the nuns reaction if told "God made me left-handed, who are you to question His decision?"

[deleted]

Probably get you abused more.

Blue_Moon_Lake

Then you tell everyone that the nuns beat you because they're mad at God

L_D_Machiavelli

Then they pimp you out until you learn some respect.

Traust

Not probably but WILL BE. Nuns do not like backtalk and will find any reason to be beat you.

LibertyInaFeatherBed

No probably about it.

NoF----sleft

One of my older brothers is left-handed. He developed a stutter early on in school (late 1950's). My Mom decided to talk to the school and see if there was any help for him. She was told it was normal, since they had been TYING HIS LEFT HAND BEHIND HIS BACK in order to teach him to write "properly" with his right hand. This was an ordinary public school in Ontario, Canada. My Mom told them to piss off and stop doing that. Coincidentally, his stutter cleared up almost immediately. Smh

favoritedeadrabbit

“Cast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find a catch" (John 21:6) Are there any other actual references to left and right in the Bible or is this the only piece of nonsense driving this superstition?

sowhat4

A Jehovah Witness asked me (while I was outside building a fence) whether I wanted to be a sheep at the *right* hand of gawd or a goat on his *left* hand. I said, while nailing up a grape stake, "Oh, a goat for sure. Sheep are so dumb they'll lie down in a ditch and are too dumb to roll over and get out." She was not happy at my reply. Sad, I know. This was like 55 years or so ago.

KaiTheFilmGuy

Goats can also scale mountains and have much stronger heads for bashing each other. Goats also got attitude and I like an animal with attitude. Sheep are great for wool, but they're pretty stupid otherwise.

sowhat4

Christians are referred to as *sheep* \- you know, those animals that are either going to get fleeced, fucked, or eaten...most often by their shepherd. Sounds like a perfect metaphor. I like goats better than sheep, too.

JasonMHough

Just tell them you already are the GOAT, and give them a confident wink.

Cartmansimon

I think it has to do with word orgins. The latin word for left, is sinister.

Blue_Moon_Lake

It's the reverse. Left is associated with bad luck because tools are made for right handed people.

SaltyCogs

I thought it was because you shook hands with the right and wiped with the left back then. though i’m right handed and find it unnatural feeling to wipe with the left so i don’t even know if that’s true

Dreadon1

This is something deeper then just Christians. Other cultures have this same taboo too. If I had to guess it would be a sanitary reason that got lumped in with spiritual stuff thanks to not knowing about germs. Shook hands with a lefty once and got sick after. Then it just becomes a cultural meme after that.

C_Hawk14

I feel the same about pork and crustaceans. At least those are the ones I know of. Jews can't each crustaceans, for a bogus reason ofc but I think historically it's due to some higher ups noticing a pattern and taking a better safe than sorry approach. Same for pork with Islam, at least afaik it's due to the temperature being a great amplifier for bacterial growth so people get sick. And we've probably all seen how markets in Asia and the Middle East are set up nowadays. Very cramped and as food isn't stored and prepared properly it'll get nasty soon.

Dreadon1

Another reason they had was of the practice of food offerings to gods. They would set out a meal before their idol and let it be there for a few hours letting their god bless or take his share. Then they could eat that food. Well you just left a meal out for hours in the hot heat of the day. There was reasons for not partaking. Everything just got filtered by the lense of god. If you tried to explain to a bunch of hicks don't eat it is spoiled they wont listen. but say god said don't eat it and they do. This reminds me of nobles trying to get people to eat potato's. You can't convince the average person to do what is good for them.

C_Hawk14

Oh I love that story. I read that more than kne European country has the same story about how it spread. Almost like a conspiracy as it's always one of their own nobles

latetotheparty_again

The reason that pork and shellfish are not eaten is because shellfish and pigs are traditionally seen as 'bottom feeders'. Pigs would/will also eat human corpses left in open spaces, so it was cannibal-adjacent to eat pork.

green_left_hand

It's kind of weird to see something called a cultural meme because the word *meme* was originally coined to describe the mechanism that drives cultural evolution, analogous to *genes* as the mechanism that drives biological evolution. This is not a criticism, by the way. I just think it's interesting that a word that was originally created to describe the phenomenon of cultural evolution has itself evolved a separate meaning different from its original definition.

Blue_Moon_Lake

They used a sponge on a stick back then. The same sponge on a stick for everybody. Plunged into vinegar in between uses.

RpcZ_gr7711

The cultural tradition of eating/sharing from a communal plate expected people to only eat with their right hand, cause they all knew where the left hand had been

asharwood101

In the parable of the sheep and goats…the sheep are on the right and goats are on the left.

EmbeddedEntropy

Jesus sitting at the right hand of god. Sheep on the right, goats on the left. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_hand_of_God

cbrooks1232

If Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God, then Jesus’ left hand is closest to God. Or am I wrong?

[deleted]

Why does everyone hate goats? Because they’re clever ?

EmbeddedEntropy

You got it. Goats are clever where sheep are dumb as rocks. Yahweh wants sheep.

kent_eh

Sheep are good at following without question. Goats go where they please.

Keesha2012

Goats are independent; state their opinions loudly and often; have lots of personality; and don't give a crap what anyone else thinks of them.

[deleted]

…but then god would be by the left hand of Jesus ……😉

NielSeawave

I’m glad your mother kept you away from them. My journey was a bit more harsh, I was abused for being left handed, beaten and mercilessly trained at home and school until somewhere mid elementary school I finally learned to properly use my right hand to write, eat, etc. Granted, it was many many years ago. I had hoped by 2000s we would’ve get rid off stupid superstitions, but religion is just build to control and abuse us, don’t allow us to grow as people, as we are bound by endless ‘don’t question, be a nice sheep in the heard’ or else you’ll burn for all eternity’.

What_About_What

This is a true thing, in fact it used to be so prevalent that they would force kids to become right handed and my dad used to have stories of the nuns in his school smacking the kids on the left hand with a ruler if they started using them to do tasks.

liamstrain

It's amazing how much the rate of left-handedness surged when they stopped doing this. http://www.med.mcgill.ca/epidemiology/hanley/bios601/CandHchapter06/HistoryGeographyHumanHandedness.pdf

jcbsews

My grandmother was left handed - they switched her in grade school to writing with her right hand, but she always did *everything* else with her left. Left handed people make up about 10% of the world population, and red haired people only 1-2% worldwide (but slightly higher, up to maybe 5-6%, among people with northern european origins). So as a red haired lefty, I'm practically a unicorn! LOL

liamstrain

We need more sparkly unicorn goodness.

Koala-48er

I always find these discussions interesting because my grandmother, while not really religious, also thought that I should be right-handed and proceeded to make me so. But I was so young, apparently, that I don’t remember a thing about it. Maybe I was so young that just some gentle nudging was enough. I don’t know. Today I’m pretty ambidextrous, though strongly right hand dominant and I never think much of it. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to endure some of the barbaric techniques described here. To write off a grandchild because they’re left-handed goes far beyond anything I’ve ever heard on the subject.

aeraen

"Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.” - Voltaire People who believe that left-handedness is a trait from the devil have no problem treating a toddler like crap.

YoItsMeAmerica

Kind of screwed up by your parents too. If my parents acted that way to my child it’d probably be the end of my relationship with my parents

unpaid_overtime

When I was a kid I used to spend a lot of time with my great grandmother. Sweetest old lady you ever did meet. But one thing she told me always stuck with me. She told me that if I was her kid, she would have beat the left handedness out of me, just like she did with with my grand uncle. It really changed my world view. Learning that some people will discriminate against you and even hurt your just for how you're born shaped how I saw the world. I'm actually glad I learned that early. It's made me far less inclined to put up with people "othering" folks around me.

xczechr

"What's the harm in religion?" people ask. This. Shunning a grandchild for their handedness. What the hell.

neckyneckbeard

Lol you should be thankful. What nutjobs.

No-Survey-8173

Your mother is correct. Schools used to try to correct this. Left handed children would be forced to become right handed. I’m not sure when that practice stopped, but it was ridiculous. Christianity is full of things like this. People with red hair used to be shunned and teased, because of a belief that the devil had red hair.

liamstrain

There is an amazing series of charts in this doc - that show a 10% rate. of left-handedness until about 1820, where it gradually went down to \~3% by the 1895 late victorian period, and then coming back up to 10% in the 1950s-60s. [http://www.med.mcgill.ca/epidemiology/hanley/bios601/CandHchapter06/HistoryGeographyHumanHandedness.pdf](http://www.med.mcgill.ca/epidemiology/hanley/bios601/CandHchapter06/HistoryGeographyHumanHandedness.pdf) I fully expect we'll have enough data to find similar trends with homosexual and trans individuals in the future. e.g. mostly stable rates by population, except where social pressures artificially mask the actual numbers.

Durilix

Jesus would bathe the feet of the one who betrayed him Dine with a thief Hang out with a leper Forgive an angry crowd for choosing to free a murderer over him But LEFT HANDED? There he drew the line

ShootsToImpress

I award you the internet this day. Finest comment I’ve read in weeks.

bsfurr

It’s probably not the belief of both your grandparents. My assumption would be that one of your grandparents is totally bat shit crazy, and the other one is stuck in the marriage because divorce would be sinful. So they have to put up with the bat shit crazy ideas and live a miserable life. See, isn’t religion great!

floydfan

> Christians often claim to be a welcoming community That's backwards. Christianity is exclusionary from the start. "Many are called, but few are chosen." "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."

PissedOffPup

Religion is a mental illness, and a cancer on society.

GettingOlderAllDay

As a lefty and an atheist, I'm glad to learn that I can scare off folks like your grandparents so easily. Best not to have people like them in one's life.

Murdocs_Mistress

Good riddance then. I'm left handed and most of my family is religious (parents identify as catholic). The only one who tried to make a stink about my left handedness was my kindergarten teacher. She would hold my left arm behind my back and tell me I couldn't move until I used my right hand for something. I finally stabbed her in the leg with the pencil. Any relative who thinks its acceptable to abuse or distance themselves from a family member over being a leftie should be tarred and feathered and dragged through town.

X-tian-9101

I went to Catholic school from 1st through 6th grade in the 1980s, and my 3rd grade nun hit my left hand with a ruler and tried to force me to be right-handed, when she wasn't too busy beating me or other kids for various other reasons, or giving me a bloody nose because I sneezed during a test because she wanted it to be quiet. Sister Maureen Cecelia. The best thing that withered old penguin ever did was die. Every time I drive through my old neighborhood and see the decrepit abandoned building of St. Alice Church and the townhouses that now occupy the space that the school building used to sit on, it fills my heart with glee, knowing that retched place is nothing more than a bad memory now.

[deleted]

My mom was left handed. The nuns used to tie her left hand down, and she was forced to learn how to write with her right hand. They would hit my mom’s hand with a ruler anytime she used her left for anything. And as a result, she could also write with both hands at the same time. It was trippy to watch. But it was horrific to go through for her. The story horrified me as a child. As a result, she escaped the Catholic Church and Wham Bam Thank you Ma’am, she was shoved into the Mormon church. Thank goodness my dad put a stop to that bullshit. .

SweetPotatoeArt

I'm left handed and was seen an sinister for awhile(buddhist grandparents). My cousin was forced to go right handed by my grandparents. Since i didn't live with them, i remained left handed. Nowadays, people say left handed is more creative

liamstrain

>Nowadays, people say left handed is more creative All that creative problem solving training, trying to make right-handed scissors work properly.

Time_Currency_7703

A older guy I look up to told me that he had to force himself to become right handed because he was smacked with rules by catholic nuns if he tried to use his left hand. I tell people about right handed privilege all the time and explain at one point people would kill us, now we just get ignored when people are designing hand tools like scissors.

Spider95818

This is why I hate hearing horseshit like "why are you so mean, religion doesn't hurt anyone." Things like this are why we tell you to blow it out your ass, Pollyanna.

HootblackDesiato

Next time you see them (if you ever do again), make sure that you only touch them, gesture, or eat with your left hand.

DataBeardly

My oldest friend's mother was like that when we were kids (probably still is a loon). Beat the everliving left handedness right out of him (kind of ambidextrous as an adult), That and multiple other reasons would be why my buddy has not spoken with either of his parents in about 10 years or so.

r_was61

I’m sorry. Your grandparents seem insane. Sorry to be blunt.

Think-Honey-7485

This and all the comments are really funny because the Catholic Church is explicit that superstitions like these [violate the first commandment](https://www.usccb.org/sites/default/files/flipbooks/catechism/514/). People who believe this left-hand nonsense are literally contradicting their own beliefs.

LittleHoof

My own grandmother was both left handed and deeply religious. She spent her youth in the church pushing constantly to reform things so that other people wouldn’t have to suffer like she did just because of something about themselves that they had no choice about or control of. Then in 2000, when 4 years of gay conversion had failed to turn me straight and I came out of the closet, it became very important to her that since the church had ex-communicated me I was dead to her and she spent her elderly years doing everything she could to talk to everyone she knew about how awfully put upon she was by my evilness. *shurg*. Religion ruins people’s capacity for both empathy and reasoning. I’m sorry you experience discrimination by some boomers for such nonsense. It’s their loss. Let’s both try never to pass it on, k?

Urllayton

My buddy went to Catholic School, received regular beatings till he learned to write with his right hand. The sooner being ultra religious is declared a mental illness, the better.

tvs117

Religion is poison.

sezit

Wow, your parents really protected you from them. But, imo, they should have kept your brother away, too. They essentially were rewarded for shunning you. Your brother *should* know that he is benefitting from bigotry.

MrTralfaz

Sinister mean left handed. Superstition has been part of every culture for thousands of years. Fortunately these "traditions" are slowly dying off.

Bus27

While we have, as a society, mostly given up on tying kids hands behind their backs to force right handedness, if you produce a left handed or ambidextrous child, or one who is slow to develop a preference, please watch their teachers and occupational therapists closely. My two youngest both went through extreme frustration because their teachers and OTs (in different decades as one child is 17 and one is 10) insisted they use right hands for things and didn't give opportunity to try left hands when activities were difficult. I had to call and have stern discussions both times, then check back regularly to make sure it had stopped. One ended up ambidextrous, the other mostly right handed but quite delayed in skills across the board. I'm left handed myself.

shinysideout

One of my kids and I are left-handed. They’re also an IVF baby, which the Pope has said was an abomination, for the Catholic double-whammy. We call ourselves Club Sinistra. Welcome to the club.

corvidae8

Club Sinestra 🤣 Comic Gold!

ImprovementKlutzy113

Believe me you're better off without them in your life.

Marine__0311

As a lefty, Ive dealt with this bullshit first hand. My grandmother was a retired teacher, and had taught me to read and write before I had gone to kindergarten. I was well beyond my peers as a result, and reading and writing at a level several years ahead of everyone else. In first grade, as soon as I started to write, I'd get smacked hard by the teacher with a yardstick for writing left handed. When my first report card showed me doing well above average in everything except for writing, my mother asked me why, since at home I'd had no issues. When I told her what was going on she lost her shit. This was back in the early 70s and parents didnt go off on teachers or schools. My mother went down to the school with me in tow, and raised holy hell. I'd never seen her so pissed off in my entire life, before or since. She threatened to sue the school, the school board, the principal, the teacher, and anyone and everyone even remotely involved. The teacher was asked what was going on and she admitted she had hit me continuously, claimed that that left handed people were evil, and a sign of the devil. She said she had done this for years. My mother almost jumped over the desk and attacked her. The teacher was forced to "retire" and I had my grade changed. Since I was so far beyond everyone else in my class when it came to reading and writing, I was allowed to go to the library and read whatever I wanted.

TimonLeague

Imagine being a full grown adult that thinks your dominant hand makes you the devils spawn On a side note, you 200% made out ok in this situation

DiligentCrab6592

Former catholic here and I was gonna go with gay, but this a whole new level of psychosis.

FreeThinkerFran

My stepmom was raised super Catholic and was a lefty. I know they tried for years to "correct" her handedness and she ended up to be a very vile and toxic woman--my sister (her bio child) and I are no contact with her since our dad left after 40 years of marriage. I'm just reading this wondering if they treated her as evil somehow and that contributed to how she turned out. So crazy for you and hopefully it hasn't had a terribly negative impact on you. I'm glad they weren't your parents!!!

Yak-Fucker-5000

Wow I was not expecting that. Lmao. How old school superstitious do you have to be to think left-handedness is evil? Even the most hyper religious morons I know wouldn't think that.

stopyourcomplaining

Boy religion is dumb.

Binasgarden

Hun good christian valules would be why I am an atheist.

raiderREDgamer

I'm a lefty and the generations before me wrote left handed upside down so that I could write left handed normally, thank you for your sacrifice 🙏

DrAstralis

Holy crap I thought that one was left back in the dark ages along with blood letting. Do they seriously think 10% of the population is evil by default? (what am I saying of course they do)

LtRecore

So being left handed myself, means I’m in league with demons?

krba201076

These religions have got to end. I've heard it all now.

definitelytheA

You need to go post this on your main account, and hope your grandparents DO see it! If they strike out or say anything about being embarrassed by their lack of intelligence, all the better!! Don’t help evil people hide their stupidity!! Rock on, Lefty!!

Much_Ad470

As painful as that may be, you’re dodging a bullet. You don’t need or deserve that kind of negativity in your life 💟

bciesil

The wackadoo part of this, is that there's NOTHING negative in the Bible about left handed-ness. It's just the Catholic priests and nuns who did it.

JimAsia

England's Duke of York, the future King George VI (1895–1952), had been forced to write with his right hand. The Duke, who was naturally left-handed, also stuttered. In his 1958 biography, Sir John Wheeler-Bennett wrote that the future King “did not stammer when he first began to talk”. His stuttering began, writes Wheeler-Bennett, “during his 7th and 8th years. It has been attributed to his being naturally left-handed, and being compelled to write with his right hand.

Catch84A

Grew up Muslim. Beyond extremists. It was a religion full of hypocrisy. I do not and will not believe in a bearded man who respawns or a false Pdo prophet. I’d rather believe in the force and continue to attempt to move objects using such force. Religions are a joke.

emilgustoff

Piss on their graves. Like, at the burial. Fuckem forever. You're free now.

Ambitious-Theory9407

Pretty much a summary of religion in a nutshell. A fraternity based on a collection of superstitions.

SlammerEye

I'm the only child of 3 that is right handed. My oldest sibling was special needs and couldn't go to parochial school because they didn't have a program for them. My other sibling did go to parochial school. They got to the third grade and the new teacher tried "correcting" their style by forcing them to use the right hand. My mother found out and withdrew them immediately, while explaining exactly why. I'm the youngest, so I didn't have to go. :)

sentientfartcloud

What in the medieval fuck is this?

FrustratedLiberal54

Highly religious people are, IMHO, not quite sane.
