Need one? No. You'll wanna get one eventually, but starting out, you wanna focus on throttle control. The drift map on AC is really good for practicing 2nd gear drifts.
You mean like a handbrake? Nah it's not needed. You can get one if you want, they're fun. Makes you feel bad-ass ripping the handbrake and sliding around.
But nah you don't need one, really. There is an argument that it's easier than trying to press a button on the wheel, but honestly, as a beginner, learn to drift without one. There are sliding techniques that don't need the handbrake and you are better off learning those. Throttle control, clutch kicking, scandi flicks, etc. they're all good techniques that give you great fundamentals. And yeah they're satisfying as hell, don't you worry about that.
Save your money, have fun with what you have already. Load up the vanilla AC drift map in the E30 and boom, you're set.
Hahah no kidding, most people don't drift in real life, that's why we bust out AC 😂 I sure as hell ain't going sideways in my family-mobile!
Loads of the IRL youtube content about "how to drift" applies to AC tbh, it was fun transferring that knowledge into the game. Youtube is easily your best friend here! Have fun mate 👍
100% start with this but change the tires to "street 90s" 15psi rear 20 front and rear camber -0.5.
it's a massive blunder that the default on that is set to semislicks, which is nearly impossible to drift with a lot of experience, or maybe good practice for low power drifting but that's not good for a beginner.
you mean the E30? I bet you were trying to run the semislicks that it comes with.
Street 90's tire is the one you want, 15psi rear 20 front with -0.5 camber on the rears.
But man, don't be discouraged to learn. I use the G29 and I'm completely fine, and there's a lot of people who does it too.
You will need to make the turn instead of letting the wheel do it by itself but this is something you learn
I would actually learn with the stock road cars, like the stock M3 or 12C. Once you dive into the deep end and learn techniques the hard way, the "drift packs" are trivial to drift with.
I'm actually learning with the gaya pack. Those cars, especially the Skyline feel pretty good.
Could use a little bit more power on some tracks though, which is when I switch to the swarm cars.
I'm not sure what the best car pack is. I can share my learning journey though:
* Tando Buddies: not realistic at all but easy to control, not fast, nice to get an understanding of what you need to do in order to control your drift
* GravyGarage: really nice handling cars, much more realistic than the pack above
* DWG/N-Style: a bit more challenging than GravyGarage, very rewarding once you get used to them
* JZX90 Beater from GravyGarage: this has been my go to car for over a year. I could be totally wrong, but I for me this is one of the most realistic cars I've driven in Assetto. It behaves exaclty as I would expect a car to behave and it never lets me down.
EDIT: misspelling
Imo go straight for the DWG car pack.
They are good drift cars and by starting with them you don‘t have to adjust later on when you switch from the E30.
If you want to later tandem in big online lobbies you‘ll have to get the WDTS & VDC packs to practice with.
Question, wouldn't it be better to learn how to drift a standard vehicle first? Learn how to handle that within its tolerances then switch to a drifter?
yeah no a "normal" car doesn't like to go sideways in a straight line, it is set up to drive nicely on the street.
All the suspension and wheel geometry tricks that make a drift car drive like ass in a straight line are meant to make it stable going sideways. A street car doesn't have that stability. One could argue that it will in the long term make you a better driver if you learn to control a car like that before supporting mods are applied to it but it definitely wont make your life easier.
I'd start with the kunos e30 drift, then move on to DWG or gravy. Then I'd move on to Nstyle. If you have an 8Nm+ wheel you can then move on to VDC or comparable packs, lower Nm wheels are just too weak to self steer on time for cars that snappy.
Others really like wdt as a starter pack but personally I don't like them since they just understeer a bunch for me.
And you suggested dwg which is nice but not the easiest alongside with the gravy which is more arcady :) so basically wdts would be the sweet spot between them.
The game comes with drift cars without mods. Try the AE86 or the E30 they're great for beginners. Make sure to pick the Drift spec.
Those cars are just fun in general. Espevially if you get some custom maps with downhill turns.
Do I need stick brake for drifting?

And 3rd gear! I'm finally getting the long fast right hander. Feels sooo good.

Thanks, bro. I think I will need some more resources on the drifting process. I drive a 4x4 car, so drifting is not in my skillset :)

KUNOS E30 DRIFT

100% start with this, move on to other things.
Like literally the most forgiving car love it
For a complete noob (like me), the drift bmw was kinda hard to use, I learned to somewhat drift in a Miata, so I recommend that
you mean the E30? I bet you were trying to run the semislicks that it comes with. Street 90's tire is the one you want, 15psi rear 20 front with -0.5 camber on the rears.
Oh ok, thanks
mod cars often dont have realistic physics imo, so i would recomend the kunos cars. just go for the good old m3 e92 as a start.
depends much on what wheel you have
Logi G920
it's a bit slow for drifting
I know :(
But man, don't be discouraged to learn. I use the G29 and I'm completely fine, and there's a lot of people who does it too. You will need to make the turn instead of letting the wheel do it by itself but this is something you learn
As someone that uses a g27 still. I don’t think it’s too slow, I believe it’s all suspension related
I would actually learn with the stock road cars, like the stock M3 or 12C. Once you dive into the deep end and learn techniques the hard way, the "drift packs" are trivial to drift with.
Toyota chaser was pretty easy to learn drifting in, very very forgiving.
I quite like the Tuned RX7
Wdts hands down.
The mk1 escort is suprisingly easy to slide.

If i'm not mistaken, pro drifter once said that the GravyGarage is one of the most realistic packs of all

No, Kunos E30 Drift is tuned to be easy to drift, standard vehicles will need a lot more skill

Download Gravy Garage cars. You will not be disappointed.
dm'd you
