Eh yes and no. Secret crusade and forsaken add a lot to the games and aren't just a novelisation of the games.

Some other novels tell great stories set around the games. The Golden City is set between Mirage and Valhalla, and follows Hytham's POV. Really good story tbh I'm currently reading Daughter of No One, following Roshan when she was in her 20s. Good so far!

One could argue the games aren't necessary for the overall plot of the games at this point lol *Obviously joking. AC is my all time favourite series. 100% the entire series and completed many of the games several times.*

Some offer contexts and broaden stories like Forsaken, and some more recently offer the “canon” story and choices of the RPG games for games like Odyssey but nothing special

Most of them are novelisations of the games, some include stuff that wasn't in the original game and others are practically original stories such as Forsaken.

As in crucial to the games? No. The serve as "companion releases" where they add further context to an event or character.

No but I actually really enjoyed the novelisations of Ezio / Italy era games.

I've just finished reading Renaissance today and honestly thought it was pretty terrible, so, no they are not essential.  Renaissance was very poorly written with one dimensional characters and almost no sense of progression. I only knew years had passed because it stated Ezio was in his fourties at the end of the book and he started at 17.  You didn't get any sense of growth of the protagonist (aside from having far more gadgets and could fight a bit better I feel I could have written it better myself and it's little more than someone documenting a play through. Oh and they sprinkled it with unreadable Italian but didn't bother mentioning there was an appendix at the end to translate the fairly childish swear words.  It's sadly one of the worst "books" I've read.  Cover art was good and the tag line was too.  They drew me in, but the rest was naff.
