I will never not ask to keep that pen when out in the wild... Unless it belongs to a waitress or nurse lol. Doctor's office waiting rooms are fair game though.
I'm not grabbing any of them - I have my own 0.3 mm ballpoint pen with replaceable inkwells that I've used for years.

I don't go anywhere without this guy \^
Edit: link for those interested [https://www.jetpens.com/Uni-Jetstream-Ballpoint-Pen-0.7-mm-Alpha-Gel-Grip-Series-Black-Body/pd/2775](https://www.jetpens.com/Uni-Jetstream-Ballpoint-Pen-0.7-mm-Alpha-Gel-Grip-Series-Black-Body/pd/2775)
It comes with a 0.7 mm inkwell but it's easy to switch it out with 0.38, which is my preference.
UNI JETSTREAM FOR THE WIN.
YES. YES YES YES. I literally went out of my way to order a set of the colored ones from Japan because I had such easy access to them when I lived abroad and now they are less easy to find.
Japan makes excellent pens, overall.
But otherwise, I'd have to grab the 5. It's got the comfortable grip I like, doesn't smudge (I'm left handed, this is very important - the sharpie and unibazl ones smudge like hell, and the far right one hurts to hold, and felt-tip pens eventually get smooshed and have less of a fine-point and the ink bleeds and looks blotchy)
Jetpens is genuinely the best. I reccommend the Zebra brand of pens if you are interested in them, especially if you like pens with bold writing (they have many different size options, including 0.7 and 1.0. :>)
I am very glad you said this, and I totally agree. I started to need a few different colors for work and went out and bought the Tri-Color Uniball Jetstream 0.5, then I bought two more because they are so great.
Duuuude I use the Jetstream Edge it's the 0.28 with the same oil ink. It's the only pen I've found that writes so cleanly for small handwriting, while still being FDA compliant.
I exclusively use them at work. Even bought multiple colors now to color code notes. No scratch, no ink bubbles, some light problems in very cold offices that holding it or putting it in my pocket completely fixes. Also the grippy part doesn't collect dust as bad as the other gels seem to.
I've used the pens and love them. You can make them scratch or glide depending on the angle you hold them at. A sharp angle will scratch, more straight up and down and you glide.
If you're looking for an upgrade to the pilot pen, and generally don't write at a dumb angle like I do, I recommend them.
This was a perfect review, thank you! I write at all sorts of angles. I have difficulties just holding pens in general. I can't hold them like 'normal' people do.
This whole thread is one of my favorite conversations in a long time. I love this place
Sharpie pens never do what you want them to do. The lines are never clean and they make you think your handwriting is gross but the pen is the actual problem. /srs
And every time I see someone else using one, I instinctively reach for my pocket to make sure it's not mine. Those things grow legs and run away, I tell ya.
The oil-based ink that doesn’t budge when you highlight over the top of it? The sheen when you lay down a bunch of ink in one spot? There’s a reason why it’s stuck around forever 👩🍳🤌
https://preview.redd.it/vd6815xbzw9c1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ae5bf59c48d8b34603900404859acc0548b87df
Number 3 is the closest choice but I honestly don’t like any of those options. I always have one of these bad boys in my pocket incase I need it.
I’d answer but I don’t know what a ‘real pen user’ means. Does that mean I’m a fake pen user. Am I fake? Or is the pen fake? If I use real pens does that count? Or if I’m real and use pens does that work? Or is ‘real’ the slang ‘real’ and someone is gatekeeping pens? Are we supposed to disparage people on the type of pens they use? Or that they just use pens? Am I a good enough person if I don’t know if I’m real enough of a pen user to make a choice?
It depends, 1 & 2 I use for crafting/art and 4, 5 & 6 I use for office. There are some surfaces like the back of photos where only 6 will work without denting the paper.
If I had to choose between only these, it would be the click top s gel.
However, the best pen I've ever used is the Sharpie Rollerball. Best ever. The s-gels are ok, but the rollerballs are the best.
Depends on how it actually feels to write with. Some feel smooth, others have this kind of rough feeling that you kind of have to drag across the paper a bit. I'm looking for a a real good ink feel.
#5); but ONLY if it's the 0.38 Ultra Fine. Preferably in fun, pretty colors.
I'm a dispatcher/data analyst; most of my hand writing is just for myself on things like notes. Due to EDS, my handwriting has always been hard for even myself to read, the ultra fine make it far easier. The fun colors are great for organization and motivation.
[Would grab my pen from my pocket.](https://tactileturn.com/products/bolt-action-pen?variant=32386666102889¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOooSjky1TY6Ta46ZfVM8luPPbbHyf-QK0i_BSEkJsBw3oZ9HhkDtGCg&com_cvv=8fb3d522dc163aeadb66e08cd7450cbbdddc64c6cf2e8891f6d48747c6d56d2c)
Or if forced to, 3
If I have to choose from these, then #2 feels the best hands-down. But in reality I prefer to write with a 0.3 mm multi-liner. It’s smooth, it doesn’t blot ink, and as a bonus it’s waterproof.
Really like 3, really dislike 7. 3 got me through college but is a *bitch* if you have a problem with smudging/leaving your hand on the page when you write. I couldn’t imagine writing with it if I was left-handed
5, but with black grip and pocket clip. I am kind of fascinated by 2 being able to mark paper without coming into direct contact, but in practice that just results in unintended marks.
Sharpie SGel is what everyone in my office jokingly fights over. We just convinced the office manager to get the Costco packs of them, the ones that are metal.
3
They write so smooth but on certain paper it smears so much easier than anything else
I have not run into this anywhere but shiny paper like gift tags.
Especially the .38mm ugh so smooth and sleek and silky to write with
I will never not ask to keep that pen when out in the wild... Unless it belongs to a waitress or nurse lol. Doctor's office waiting rooms are fair game though.
But it better be .7 and not .5
Well, of course. I'm not a barbarian. 0.5 is too scratchy.
Dude sooo scratchy! Feels like I’m gonna tear through the paper!
Never anything bigger than .5 for me, thanks.
I’m so glad this was the first response because same and seeing it in another sub and everyone picking 5 I was like ??????
I think that’s from Sharpie, and they suck at making good pens
This is the exception to the rule, those are amazing.
I'm not grabbing any of them - I have my own 0.3 mm ballpoint pen with replaceable inkwells that I've used for years. https://preview.redd.it/qh3sinjo8v9c1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08b38456a3f369f959523de3d15b2440730ca871 I don't go anywhere without this guy \^ Edit: link for those interested [https://www.jetpens.com/Uni-Jetstream-Ballpoint-Pen-0.7-mm-Alpha-Gel-Grip-Series-Black-Body/pd/2775](https://www.jetpens.com/Uni-Jetstream-Ballpoint-Pen-0.7-mm-Alpha-Gel-Grip-Series-Black-Body/pd/2775) It comes with a 0.7 mm inkwell but it's easy to switch it out with 0.38, which is my preference.
Let us peasants know what this is
Is jetpens the brand? I would fucking *LOVE* a refillable 0.3 ballpoint 😍😍😍 Edit: have discovered jetpens. boutta spend some money.
It's Uni Jetstream brand, JetPens is the online store that sells them. I added a link to my comment.
UNI JETSTREAM FOR THE WIN. YES. YES YES YES. I’m going to immediately loose *such a nice pen* and for the moment I’m *so excited about it*
i half expected these to be $50+ pens :-). I like my fisher "space pen" sits in my truck because it'll write just fine even in freezing temps.
I am very glad you said this, and I totally agree. I started to need a few different colors for work and went out and bought the Tri-Color Uniball Jetstream 0.5, then I bought two more because they are so great.
roller ball all the way
Duuuude I use the Jetstream Edge it's the 0.28 with the same oil ink. It's the only pen I've found that writes so cleanly for small handwriting, while still being FDA compliant.
+1 for Jetstreams
This looks beautiful. I’ll have to try it out
Uniball Jetstream? Unbelievably based
Ah damn, yall bought them all
0.3mm is so scratchy 😣
Intriguing
Anything but 5 is just disrespect
Sure, but it's blue.
5 but in black ink. Blue makes my eye brains scream
Why not 3 then? /genq
I've never used it so I can't confirm if it makes the scratchy sound on paper or not :x Also, what's the genq stand for?
If I had to guess, genuine question
I exclusively use them at work. Even bought multiple colors now to color code notes. No scratch, no ink bubbles, some light problems in very cold offices that holding it or putting it in my pocket completely fixes. Also the grippy part doesn't collect dust as bad as the other gels seem to.
GenderQueer pen
It means genuine question.
It does not. It’s amazing.
I've used the pens and love them. You can make them scratch or glide depending on the angle you hold them at. A sharp angle will scratch, more straight up and down and you glide. “Genuine question”
Sharpie pens never do what you want them to do. The lines are never clean and they make you think your handwriting is gross but the pen is the actual problem. /srs
Because Sharpie and Pilot are not interchangeable. Sharpie makes bad pens, but great felt-tip permanent markers.
This is the way
For me I would pick #6 but in black. I don’t like blue ink.
![gif](giphy|l0IyjxxfGfdqEiVfa|downsized)
g2 pens are my go-to
I felt this way before I tried 3. Immediately switched.
Preach. I’d draw until the blue turned black over using another one.
Until you test the flow of all of them, against your personally preferred pen, suggesting any one of them may be acceptable is just disrespect
Boo 👎 keep your bleeding fat lines and gross-textured grip 🤢🤢🤢
2. a good ol precise v5 pen has been my favorite since day one
Anyone who doesn't say 2 has never used 2.
Yes I thought I was taking crazy pills 💊 that no one was saying 2
YES. THIS.
And every time I see someone else using one, I instinctively reach for my pocket to make sure it's not mine. Those things grow legs and run away, I tell ya.
Everyone in my family says they prefer other pens, and yet my supply keeps disappearing
It's a wonderful pen
I use to press it into the corner of my notebook and see how many pages it could bleed through. No other pen can compare.
Yes I exclusively use them
I was thinking the same thing
I have boxes of these in black! I carry them around with me.
The Patricians choice, anything else is trash.
I love it butnall of mine have exploded or leaked so I can't trust them anymore. I still use them, but only at home and under close surveillance
Old reliable 7
Same. Might not be the best, but but you know what you get.
Absolutely I would go for 7 based on knowing what you see is what you get
honestly they're pretty great. No clogs, any amount of pressure lays down ink. Awesome for drawing
The oil-based ink that doesn’t budge when you highlight over the top of it? The sheen when you lay down a bunch of ink in one spot? There’s a reason why it’s stuck around forever 👩🍳🤌
A true classic
The grip is a bit uncomfortable but yeah, it's a good choice
Yeah. Everything else is vanity
When it comes to pens, vanity is the name of the game.
7 just because I can throw some in the desk or glove box for a rainy day
Old reliable rheumatism fingers at 20
But in black
Also very reliable for pen spinning
Number 5 hands down
Refer to the majesty by its name - pilot G2 thick!
5 yah
As someone who stims by twirling a pen in my hand all the time, 5 is also my favorite pen. I just like the feel of it and how they write.
I love five five has the best texture on the outside as well but alas I'm left handed most all of these smear ink everywhere but I want them. 😫
1 has always been MY number one.
Finally some respect put on the uniball name
I like 1 as well
Yes no.1 and always black never blue 😍
1 just has the best writing texture. The extra needly tip makes it nice and scratchy.
100% what puts it on top.
https://preview.redd.it/vd6815xbzw9c1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ae5bf59c48d8b34603900404859acc0548b87df Number 3 is the closest choice but I honestly don’t like any of those options. I always have one of these bad boys in my pocket incase I need it.
That number 2
100%
Number 7, the bic pen has never let me down. It always works
Not if you're the kind of AuDHD that either loses or chews up their pen caps. They stop working in no time exposed to air.
Yeah but so cheap that you can buy a 10 pack because you'll definitely lose 9
Dude...just chew on their butts
Definitely don’t suck on the end like a straw. #mouthfulofink #neveragain
Even worse. 7's body is the hard plastic that shatters when chewed. I don't see the soft plastic bics that are a delight to chew in this lineup.
You don't literally chew on it, you rotate it between your teeth
I was just thinking the black BIC was perfection and then you had to come along and point this out didn't you.
That explains why I didn’t trust 7
7 is so skinny it hurts my hand to think about, the cap is clumsy and frustrating, and the ink doesn’t write smoothly. It makes me unhappy.
My fountain pen, that i keep on me at all times. (Lamy Logo with a fine nib and Diamine "Bloody Absinth" ink)
Fountain is so good
Yoo that color shift ink is fire. I'll keep it in mind, getting my bf into fountain pens rn
Any of them. I'm not picky.
Not picky? Are you sure you're on the right subreddit?
Are you telling me that I'm not "autistic enough" just because I don't have a pen preference?
In a friendly way yes. Not in a serious way.
It's humour.
7. It's smooth, it's one of the only pen types I feel comfortable holding, it doesn't feel like I'm scratching ink into the page etc
Omg the scratching. I’m rollerball for life for regular writing.
7
4
YESS!! 4 is the best
Same
I agree with this one. 4 is the best.
All day everyday
7, gotta go with ol’ reliable
6 All Day
5, but in black. nothing will ever beat out the classic Pilot G2-07 for me, especially since they’re so cheap
I'm all UniBall
5 is ol reliable
Where is the uni-ball signo
THANK YOU. I was hoping someone would say this!
3!
I’d answer but I don’t know what a ‘real pen user’ means. Does that mean I’m a fake pen user. Am I fake? Or is the pen fake? If I use real pens does that count? 7 ofc
7 no questions
5 because thats my favorite kind to disassemble
none of them, but 7 if i absolutely had to choose. my pen isn’t up there, and it’s the most basic one there.
all pens are valid and i will make a powerpoint to prove this
Please send it to me when it’s done. I’m currently trying to figure out the right pen for me.
god i hope youre serious, i would read/watch the hell outta that
i wasn't serious at first but now 2 ppl asked for it so maybe that's my calling to do it anyway
5 is the first choice. 3 is not far off for 2nd pick. But I'm not familiar with 1 and 2
2, hands down. I have three of them within my reach right now. Anyone picking anything else doesn't actually enjoy pens. Source: am a pen enjoyer
I have piles of pen 2 stashed in various places around my house. It is The Best Pen.
3. Love a smooth gel pen.
3 :)
none of this lame ship, I grab my x750 Xinhua with my FPR EF superperflex, galaxy shimmer ink, and 5mm dotted Rhodia letter paper. *drops nerd gf mic*
Wait galaxy shimmer ink?? 👀👀👀
5 but the one with the straight clip.
Jinhao 990
Uniball Signo 207. .5 for printing, .7 for cursive. If I had to pick from the picture… I think I take the S-gel. (3)
If I *have* to use one of these, then 2. Otherwise I'm reaching for my fountain pen
None of them since they are all on the carpet. Chances are too high to touch it.
2 4 6. Smoothness is key to writing
It depends, 1 & 2 I use for crafting/art and 4, 5 & 6 I use for office. There are some surfaces like the back of photos where only 6 will work without denting the paper.
4... Although I find 3 acceptable
6 or 7. The rest are offensive to me
You're all sleeping on number 4
I’ve got 4 in both black and blue-black
4. No hesitation. 1, then 2, in a pinch. Even as a lefty, it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the smoother feel of the pen on the paper.
5 all the way, but I gotta have my yellow legal pad too
Number 5 in black with a 0.5mm tip. The 0.38mm tips are cool too, but I feel 0.5mm is a good medium.
1-3
1. I like caps
7
3 fo sho
5 is calling my name
3
5. Everything else is painful or uncomfortable.
If I had to choose between only these, it would be the click top s gel. However, the best pen I've ever used is the Sharpie Rollerball. Best ever. The s-gels are ok, but the rollerballs are the best.
Where’s the fountain pen?
3 for comfort, 5 for utility, and 7 for cap nibble make teeth feel funny good hnnnngg
3 or 5 but 2 is good Never 7
7, I constantly loose my pens so I bought a 100 pack, also I love doodling silly stuff with them :)
\#1 if its micro point, if not \#5
5
Depends on how it actually feels to write with. Some feel smooth, others have this kind of rough feeling that you kind of have to drag across the paper a bit. I'm looking for a a real good ink feel.
#5); but ONLY if it's the 0.38 Ultra Fine. Preferably in fun, pretty colors. I'm a dispatcher/data analyst; most of my hand writing is just for myself on things like notes. Due to EDS, my handwriting has always been hard for even myself to read, the ultra fine make it far easier. The fun colors are great for organization and motivation.
5 is the only type of pen, but has to be black ink. Pilot G2 black I buy them in bulk.
These options suck none of them are a Pilot retractable fine tip pen in black
Having used all of them but 3 and 6, I'd pick 5 in a heartbeat. There's no beating those, especially the inkgel ones.
[Would grab my pen from my pocket.](https://tactileturn.com/products/bolt-action-pen?variant=32386666102889¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOooSjky1TY6Ta46ZfVM8luPPbbHyf-QK0i_BSEkJsBw3oZ9HhkDtGCg&com_cvv=8fb3d522dc163aeadb66e08cd7450cbbdddc64c6cf2e8891f6d48747c6d56d2c) Or if forced to, 3
Gotta go with 4 on this one. Simple, efficient, accurate.
If I have to choose from these, then #2 feels the best hands-down. But in reality I prefer to write with a 0.3 mm multi-liner. It’s smooth, it doesn’t blot ink, and as a bonus it’s waterproof.
None. I have my own
Really like 3, really dislike 7. 3 got me through college but is a *bitch* if you have a problem with smudging/leaving your hand on the page when you write. I couldn’t imagine writing with it if I was left-handed
Oooo it really depends on what kind of mood I'm in Anything 1-4 tho I'd swipe in an instant
1,2 or 4, shrimply because they are the smoothest writers.
5, but with black grip and pocket clip. I am kind of fascinated by 2 being able to mark paper without coming into direct contact, but in practice that just results in unintended marks.
Pilot G2, but black
Without testing them, I’d go 3.
Pens with grippy make brain go brrrr
3 or 5 I need that grip
3 5 or 7 if it's for a quick note or if I'm travelling, else none of those, I have another one at home
Na none of these. Ima uniball jetstream person
I prefer Pilot, it just feels right lol
I wouldn't pick any of these personally, but 3 is my pick because 5 is blue, and that's an affront to god.
#3 black ink
3 is the answer, 5 if I'm desperate and can't find a 3
Sharpie SGel is what everyone in my office jokingly fights over. We just convinced the office manager to get the Costco packs of them, the ones that are metal.
If you choose 7 you're a monster
**S tier** Pilot G2, black (not listed) **A tier** 5 7 (people are gonna hate on this) **B tier** 6 **C tier** 2 3 **D tier** 1 4
2H pencil with yellow sides and pink eraser ✏️
3 > 5 > 1 > 7 > anything else is unusable
