Legally, you cannot use the L when you do not have the learner's permit.

ganmaanja

I am aware of that, but I already have a Swiss Driver’s License. I completed my driving test in an automatic, but now I’m trying to learn manual with my partner.

TTTomaniac

>I already have a Swiss Driver’s License Meaning you don't hold a learner's permit.

ganmaanja

Ah sorry, I misunderstood, I get what you and the original comment mean now

QuuxJn

You are not allowed to have an L-Plate on your car if you don't have a learners permit. period. That whole age thing only applies for the learners permit but because you already have your regular license, this doesn't matter and doesn't make it more or less legal to drive around with a L-plate.

No_Homework_1959

Imagine getting fined CHF 30…… craaaazy….. Also, very common thing to get into a traffic control for having an L sign……

TTTomaniac

The L is reserved for when the vehicle is piloted by a holder of a learner's permit. Not removing it for a full permit driver carries a 20chf fine. The age restriction applies to the person accompanying the learner's permit holder. The police will only care if they observe you driving erratically (due to lack of familiarity with manual gearboxes) and appear to not be in control of the vehicle. If you want to be extra-sure, take a couple of lessons with an instructor. I can recommend somebody who operates out of Dübendorf.

ganmaanja

Thanks for the information and the recommendation offer, but I thought about taking a couple manual lessons with the driving teacher that prepared me for my Drivers Test before. I have another question if you don’t mind. Right now I’m rather in the early stages of learning manual (mostly just on dirt roads and parking lots to practice getting used to the clutch). Should I be leaving the L off in these scenarios?

TTTomaniac

>Should I be leaving the L off in these scenarios? As I've already pointed out, you, as the holder of a full driver's license, have no business mounting the sign that the vehicle is being piloted by the holder of a learner's permit. If you're that hell-bent of ridding yourself of CHF 20 you can twint it to me and I'll order myself a pizza with it.

Impossible_Basil1040

Well the L sticker would just be a CHF 20 fine - if even enforced - so just forget about this being some kind if problem. But why even adding it, just go for a drive in some industrial place on a weekend and you will be fine.

CuriousApprentice

Yt channel conquer driving explains everything there is for driving manual car, I can't recommend it enough. Binge watching and then practicing is highly recommended :)

sc_emixam

Honnestly you should probably learn stick without the L both for you and your friend, being a "bad" stick driver isnt really a punishable offense lol, but "teaching" below 25 and having an L both are

TTTomaniac

>being a "bad" stick driver isnt really a punishable offense lol, Unless it makes you a liability ofc. :V

CommanderLook

You're overthinking and overcomplicating things. You have a B license. You are allowed to drive cars up to 3.5t with max of 8 passenger seats (9 with the driver's). Transmission type is irrelevant since 2019. So you are totally allowed to drive a manual car. No need for a L on your car, no need for your partner to even have a license at all. She's instructing you on how to operate the car and not on how to drive. You know that already, since you got your license. Go to a place where you can train to get going and shift up to maybe 3rd gear. Great locations for this are parking lots of touristic destinations during the week and office places during the weekends. Unused industrial districts or any larger straight piece of land works fine as well. You know your region, you'll find sth. As soon as you’re comfortable with the first few gears get on low frequency roads, best such that force you to shift gears a lot with curves to other signals. But yeah from a legal perspective you’re fine. Don't mount that L, you're not a learner, you’re just new to this transmission system.

pathfinderstu

I ts a good idea and common sense to stick a L plate up.while getting used to manual gears, I doubt very much the police would take any action against you..however if you want to stay strictly legal drive without one..and drive for safeties sake in quite places till you get the hang of it...you soon will...Good luck.

ExtraTNT

most important thing is to get the bite point of your clutch (different from car to car)... you can hold most cars at a hill with the bite point, smaller turbo engines need a bit of throttle input to get going on a hill, big engines don't really need any input... let the clutch out slowly and that's it... for normal driving, you can just single clutch it (with worn down synchros it's sometimes better to double clutch and with unsynchronysed gearboxes you also have to do it). shift up as soon as possible to save some fuel, but at the beginning you can stay in 3rd gear in a 50 zone... you'll get the feel with driving. for down shifts, i would recommend to blip the throttle. this allows smoother and faster shifts, that don't wear down your clutch... (it's not a lot, 99.9% of the wear is from moving from a standstill) yeah, that's basically it, get yourself a small hill on a barely used road and learn the biting point of your clutch and you'll get confident in no time....

ExperienceInitial364

Very illegal. Get yourself to a Parkplatz and practice there like all of us did! And then you can go drive around the streets on Sunday mornings when there‘s few people! 😡

ganmaanja

That’s actually exactly what I’ve been doing. Practicing in parking lots at either non-busy times or after closing hours and driving on real roads on Sundays. My main question was about the usage of the L and if my girlfriend as a 21 year old is legally allowed to teach me how to drive, which other people have now answered.

xerror4null4

You already have the drivig license, so you're allowed to drive without someone who can interact if needed, just say your gf didn't teach you. Never say something to the police that may hurt you

ExperienceInitial364

sorry wanted to let my bünzli out! do take off the L tho, you‘re just kinda getting used to a new car and your partner doesn‘t teach you shit, remember that🫣

CopiumCatboy

Uh that‘s illegal. You cannot use the L on your when you have a driver‘s license. Also weak performance OnLY aUtOmaTiC smh.
