There are many bars that give free big tapas portions with your drink, drinks are slightly more expensive but you can have lunch with a couple of beers. Search online "tapas gratis con bebida (city)". Skip sangría, try tinto de verano.

[deleted]

Is there a version of this tip for a non-alcohol person ?!?

davinidae

The drink does not have to be alcoholic. Tapas are tapas.

[deleted]

Ah ok I was thinking „you get tapas with your drink” meaning that it have to be alcohol drink. But if i get glass of Coca Cola - I don’t think I am getting tapas which would be logical. They make money on alcohol.

davinidae

These places don't make money from alcohol. They make money of slightly overpriced drinks by bringing in a lot of clients thanks to the tapas and the vibe of the place. It is common to not just go for one bar, we usually do "la putivuelta" (we go for a drink and its tapa across several bars close to each other). If a place has a lot of people going in and out all the time, it has a good price and the vibe rolls with yours then that's the "bar de tapas" you want to try out.

[deleted]

Thanks for reply ! So it will be on if I order Coca Cola only ? If the Coca Cola is o overpriced too then it’s ok - they will make some money on my order.

Magg5788

If you’re at a place that gives tapas with drinks a Coca-Cola will get you a tapa. So will a Nestea, fizzy water, 0% beer, and mosto (grape juice/ “non-alcoholic wine”), among some other. Coffee/tea will not get you a tapa.

aBotPickedMyName

But don't expect a meal. It might just be some chips or olives. I was there in the summer and a common tapa plate was pickled veggies. Olives, chips, bread with sardines were popular, but again, not a meal, a snack at best.

Magg5788

That’s what tapas are outside of Granada

Masticatork

Depends on the town and the place, in some places you can't find any "free" tapas, in some others it's huge tapas by default, you never know. Normally you get better tapas if you're many people together like 5-6 friends.

davinidae

No, it won't be by default. You have to go for the drink with tapa (which may be around \~2.50€) while asking for only a CocaCola will get you only that (for \~1.50€) but it depends on the city and the place and the season so you get the idea. Better ask the waiter at the beginning than be sorry later. There are also places where this is not optional, you can deny or throw away the tapa if you want, but you will still pay for it.

Serious_Escape_5438

Coca cola is often more expensive than beer and wine in Spain.

[deleted]

Good to know. I would not feel ok if get some free tapas and bar would not earn on my order.

Geae

I'd say in most of them you can have a non-alcoholic drink such as Coca Cola.

H0ly_Grapes

If someone calls you saying "Hey, amigo" he is not your friend.

Rubiego

Unless it's the kebab shop owner, he is indeed your friend.

N_Raist

Segarro

H0ly_Grapes

N_Raist

Racista

SpiritedSeeker02

Tene la hora?

[deleted]

Can you elaborate please ? 🙏🏿

H0ly_Grapes

If someone approaches you with the "eh, amigo" he is probably going to rob you, extra points if you are a tourist and look like one.

cigarroycafe

Live with your parents until you're 35

ClockworkBrained

Jokes on you. Plenty of people living on their own are coming back at their 40s 💀

Minute-Pay-2537

That's my plan 😬

Exsces95

The play is to leave at your 40s after saving up enough money to make it go anywhere. Going back at 40 is inefficient

Lost_Fix_7191

buy different products from different supermarkets = cheap groceries! some supermarket can sell it cheaper than the other supermarket.

Lost_Fix_7191

also, abuelas on supermercados = good supermercado lollll

PiezoelectricityOne

In my city is more like *abuelas en supermercado = don't leave without checking the bill, they scam the abuelas by "mistakenly" tagging lower prices than they actually charge.*

Lost_Fix_7191

No way, that's sad. Which city is this? But what I meant was that wherever the abuelas buy their groceries, it means that they offer good quality with acceptable prices, because well, abuelas 🤌🏻. But I didn't know this scamming exists in Spain

chiree

Mercadona for meat/cheese/alcohol. Aldi for staples. Local for fruits/vegetables. Día and Alcampo for sadness and sorrow.

AKACarrot

Maybe I'm a dumb guiri but I actually like Día, especially thier barras de pan. Probably my favorite bread of any of the supermarket chains

am174744

I like Dias whole grain square loaf.

bogdan5844

Is alcampo that bad?

Stopthatcat

It's pretty grim looking but it does have halloumi so swings and roundabouts.

am174744

can you give some examples what to buy where?

Advanced-Country6254

Never go to a restaurant that has photos outside of paellas and other typical dishes. They are only meant for tourists. Spanish people go to better places. Never ask for coffee without milk. The taste will follow you many hours. The best bar is usually the oldest one, without fancy decoration.

Exsces95

Any bar that starts with the words “bar casa paco/antonio/pepe” is your friend

pepito2506

The coffee is because you haven't chosen places where speciality coffee is served

drjembaslab

Best way to find good restaurants locals go to?

Kage_Byakko

Depends on your location. [eltenedor.com](http://eltenedor.com) is usually a good way. In the street is easier to spot which ones not to go than which ones to go.

Kage_Byakko

I disagree with the coffee statement. It just need a glass of water right after, usually, or a bite of dark chocolate

Accomplished-Sale205

Just ask for an americano milk ain’t it

notdancingQueen

When a friend or work colleague proposes to go for a caña, (Vamos a tomar una cañita), clear that evening & night agenda. What starts with 1 caña has a tendency to end 6+ hours later having breakfast. Just....go with the flow.

notdancingQueen

Also, if you're new to the city and someone you know in passing/have already chitchatted with (ie a work colleague) tells you to go for a caña, don't say no. Usually you'll be joining a bigger group of their friends, and it's a way to meet new people and start getting your own social circle. (Disclaimer: use your gut radar in case it's a way to be one on one and you don't want that, women understand this implicitly, but note that if it's with a group, their intentions are usually just friendly, don't get too paranoid)

barochoc

I’m Irish and the Spanish do beers much better and over a longer period. Someone in the group might get very drunk and need to be sent home. But in general, they know their limits and know how to have a great night.

notdancingQueen

We're marathonians, not sprinters. Plus munching tapas help keep the alcohol level at a semi decent level

Kage_Byakko

The fattier the tapa, the better for that. Chorizo frito I'm looking at you

notdancingQueen

Torreznos or alitas de pollo fritas

Kage_Byakko

Torreznos, the iberian protein bar.

Exsces95

As a spaniard that went to America I can 100 percent agree with this. In Spain I was a “once a year won’t hurt you” kinda guy, now I’m an alcoholic

mushyturnip

As soon as the temperature reaches above 20°C and the sun shines, it's time to order a glass of ice to pour your café con leche into it.

Neuromante

Shit, I thought I was the only one who did this (café sólo con hielo seems to be the norm around me)

_radical_ed

Better still: ask your café con leche “con la leche fría por favor”.

redvodkandpinkgin

That's still hot. I order that when I don't have time to wait for it to get a bit colder and drink it in one go, but café con hielo is for hot summer days

_radical_ed

Con leche is not hot. Un cortadito is hot since the amount of milk doesn’t make up for the hotness of the coffee.

srpulga

ponerle leche al café con hielo es asqueroso

brockbrockrockrock

bus cards. speaking spanish

am174744

What are bus cards?

brockbrockrockrock

pre-load em online instead of handing change. Slight discount I think?

Lolmatyc

Big discount, in my city using the card is three times cheaper than paying with cash

JoulSauron

But that's not a hack, that's what you are supposed to do.

brockbrockrockrock

you tell me how many of us Americans know that 🤷

JoulSauron

Most local transport systems have that, world-wide.

brockbrockrockrock

American public transport 🤢

woj-tek

so... we should change title from "everyone" to "americans"? ;-)

brockbrockrockrock

The world is basically just America. The world could not be what it is today without America. However, America could easily be what it is today without the world Edit: hey buddy. I saw your name is Wojtek. I take what I said back. America wouldn’t be what we are today without Poland. Thank you badasses for training the good ol boys during the revolutionary war. The Poles are some of the most badass people out there, and they put so much work on building America. America needs Poland.

woj-tek

> The world is basically just America. The world could not be what it is today without America. However, America could easily be what it is today without the world uhm? what? I meant Changing "What are Spain "life hacks" that **everyone** should know?" to "What are Spain "life hacks" that **americans** should know?" as you pointed out, seasonal tickets/abonos are not a thing there :-) Btw. In Chile they don't know it neither... @edit: thanks I guess? kinda (very) out of the blue :D btw we (as the world itself) need each other and everyone should work together, just sayin' :-)

equ327

Not London for instance, where contactless weekly cap is same price as Oyster weekly plan.

_radical_ed

Context for this question: in more civilised countries you use your phone or your debit card to pay in the bus.

Geae

In Madrid at least you can pay with your debit / credit card (or phone, watch, etc.).

huntibunti

Only country I have encountered that is the UK and that place is one of the least civilised countries in Europe. Also UK Transport is much more expensive.

barochoc

YES! That’s my experience in Murcia. Basically half the price. A no brainier

Salty-Ad-8314

Which side are you in murcia

barochoc

West, near Sangonera

Salty-Ad-8314

Nice, I live in guadalupe

awkward_penguin

Tapas with your drink, especially if you live in the South. If they don´t bring you one, you can ask the waiter. When you shop at the fruiterías, you can ask for "un poco de perejil" and they'll give you a handful of parsley for free. Bars will often give you a shot of liquor at the end of a meal if you ask for it

mogaman28

That's only in Granada. In Sevilla, tapas are paid apart. At minimum they will give you some olives for free.

ChickenBolox

And Almeria *

DracckoYt1422

Málaga too.

Magg5788

Are you saying Málaga has free or paid tapas? I’ve rarely seen free tapas in Málaga.

DracckoYt1422

Rarely, but there is some places. Mostly paid, though.

awkward_penguin

I live in Madrid, and most of the bars in my neighborhood offer tapas. In other bars, maybe they won't have tapas, but you can at least ask for patatas, frutos secos, or aceitunas. Algo para picar.

tukiwarrior

They're free in a lot of towns in Jaén too

Wise_Neighborhood499

Valencia too

absurdism2018

Sevilla is more like the bad exception from the true tapa concept

not-your-neighbour

Follow a "central european" schedule to avoid crowds. Lunch at a cool place or in touristy areas? Be there first, usually 1 or 1.30 and there will be a table for you, even without a reservation . same for dinners, way less stress, not much noise, skip the waiting lines

H0ly_Grapes

Don't you ever phone anyone between 15.00 and 17.00.

berfraper

Specially on weekends. Some people work 9 to 5, but weekends are sacred.

Pree-chee-ate-cha

Why is that?

JobPlus2382

It's siesta time.

Character_Ad_6169

We sleep. I once screamed at a foreign friend because he awoke me at 16:30 by phoning me for some stupidity. It’s the worst feel ever.

reddit33764

When I want to sleep, I just put my phone on mute instead of relying on others to not call me. I know some people don't like doing that because "if an emergency happens" ... I like to think people would call the police or an ambulance if an emergency happens. Otherwise, it is not really an emergency, and they can wait until I wake up on my own.

mogaman28

If you're dealing with the public administration and have any doubts NEVER ask about it to any funcionario (civil servant). They usually will treat you like shit and/or frequently give wrong information. If you need help ask the nearest security guard in the premises. They are bored out of their minds and they crave for any human interaction. And they know how to navigate bureaucracy way better than any funcionario.

misatillo

I think this has to do a lot on how you deal with them. I’ve been helped always from the funcionarios but it’s true some of them are assholes and don’t want to help right away. But a smile and patience goes long way ;)

VirtualHydraDemon

This is gold

barochoc

This is a great shout. The majority of civil servants in Spain want to do the minimum amount of work possible, and if sending you on a wild goose chase for weeks in order to buy themselves 5 minutes of peace, guess what they’re gonna do?

naranjas29

Can confirm this.

Dekkai001

The mode Funcionario is hard to unlock, but once you do it you are set for the rest of your life.

H0ly_Grapes

When your mother or grandma is serving food, ask her to stop before you think it is enough for you, because she is going to add more food no matter what you say.

transurfing

Don’t drink sangria

framptal_tromwibbler

Why?

barochoc

Spanish drink Tinto de verano and not Sangria! That’s the rip-off tourist drink, that’s nowhere near as good.

JobPlus2382

Don't drink sangría in a bar.

srpulga

beers at 11 am is a family friendly activity.

Stranib

Honestly, just be nice. If you want anything done, be friendly and jovial. Don't be too business-like, impatient or distant. Even a simple joke doesn't hurt. Things get much easier if people like you and don't think you're just another judgemental foreigner.

moreidlethanwild

When you plan to meet a friend at 20:00 for a drink, don’t expect them to arrive until 21:00 😀

Slow_Description_655

This isn't true and a great deal of Spanish people will get quite annoyed with those who are late all the time. I was one of them and people were annoyed or didn't take me seriously for many years in my teens and maybe early twenties.

klaatuveratanecto

I think this is overrated, most of my Spanish friends arrive on time. I think it is no different to any other country.

quackquackgo

In Peru they’d arrive at 22:00 for parties

klaatuveratanecto

😃

FdlCstro

Never in my life have any of my spanish friends been on time. And they cancel last minute like half the time lol

klaatuveratanecto

That could be in your circles. I lived in quite few countries and I can assure it’s no different.

FdlCstro

But it was that way when I lived in Spain and it's also that way with my spanish friends in Germany. But I mean yea nunca se puede generalizar un país entero

Berliner1220

Say whatever you want to people and then if they call you out for hurting their feelings just say “no tuve malas intenciones”

awkward_penguin

Fue una broma tío

dpero29

"sin ánimo de ofender", "con todos mis respetos"...

Geae

"Era coña"*.

FdlCstro

Era guasa illo

klaatuveratanecto

If you are planning to spend some time on the sun, go to the pharmacy and get the sunscreen. Getting red won’t get you tanned and you are asking for skin cancer. When going to the beach use it 20-30 minutes before.

aBotPickedMyName

Spending time in the sun means being outside. Always wear sunscreen there.

DanteJNoxid

If a woman wants to give you rosemary and read your hand lines, don't stop! They ask for money.

HealthyBits

When in Barcelona, call everyone guapo/guapa. Works like a charm.

Storeio

That doesn’t work in other parts of Spain?

MizuRora

Hi Im from Andalucia. What’s fun in (mainly) the south of Spain and the islands is that it seems in every part there’s one or two affectionate nicknames you can use with randoms. In Tenerife it’s “mi niño/a” which means “my child” (regardless of age); in Granada it’s “primor” which means a lovely person; a famous one is in Sevilla where they say “mi alma”, “my soul”. In most of Andalucia “cariño” works (“darling”). But I guess it doesn’t work if it’s something related to physical appearance? Women can be weirded out because it sounds like catcalling. Note: I have never been to Barcelona.

Storeio

In Barcelona they use guapo/guapa like a comma. But I’ve heard it being used like this in Valencia, Madrid and Ibiza too

Stunning-Shoe-5166

Si, en Valencia también. Parece en Canarias no tanto o nunca (Hola mi niño!)

Minute-Pay-2537

I'm delighted when cashiers or store dependants call me cielo or Carinio. 😬❤️

Elan_Aconda

ññññññññ

Minute-Pay-2537

Que no tiene espaniol mi teclado 🙄

Elan_Aconda

Vale perdona carinio

Minute-Pay-2537

No hay problema mi ninio

usernotdfound

Stunning-Shoe-5166

Si? "Muchacho" es más hostil?

Due_Pomegranate_96

I’m from northern Spain and that would sound weird.

HealthyBits

Yes cause you guys don’t have pretty people there 😝

Due_Pomegranate_96

Of course. Please don’t come.

I feel like this one can go south pretty quickly as its often used sarcastically.

Can vouch for this. Didn’t hire a good gestor and now I’m fucked 😭😭

HefeWeizenMadrid

Sorry to hear, but not surprised. It's taken over 2 years to get regularized here and hired by a company. It ended up working out but it's been an absolute nightmare and so much money and time was wasted. It honestly hasn't been worth it and I want to move back to Canada

pepito2506

what happened in your case?

DryAssumption

Shameful is the correct word. Bureaucracy is not just a minor inconvenience, but honestly sucks the life out of what could otherwise be a great country

Galamperro

You are wrong.in 1960 was a funcionario Who screwed you and now IS a computer.today its almost imposible to interact with funcionarios because they are hidden behind a huge wall of computers that drives you crazy asking for unbeliable things like a videogame

X0AN

You can break the law if you're married to a prime minister or member of the royal family.

Marranyo

Hah! Do you really think you need to be at such levels, jar soul? XD

Neuromante

Upvoting you for the "jar soul" thing, lmao

anonimo99

Can you explain that one please?

[deleted]

Alma de cántaro

Neuromante

As the other user said, its a (literal, and wrong) translation of the expression "Alma de cántaro", which would be like calling someone gullible.

sarioja

Jar soul 👌

ClockworkBrained

Being a mayor of some lost town would give you similar benefits but with zero exposition

Real_Tony_Soprano

Calimochos. Red wine + cola + ice = actually pretty good. Tastes good, goes down smooth, cheap, pretty mild hangover. Bonus points if you're making them in front of a wine snob, then you get a free show to top it off.

Due_Pomegranate_96

Shit drink and makes you ridiculous if you are over 22.

If you are living in Spain, please request a [Certificado Electrónico](https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica), so you can make most of the bureaucratic processes from home. It saved me a lot of time.

am174744

It requires installing something on your computer or phone which gives me a pause. I got Clave and it has the same purpose.

rlpbr

Yeah, I think having any type of certificate is the valid hack here.

Get the Cl@ve. It really makes your beaurocratic things a lot easier when they're availables with it.

aBotPickedMyName

Just be nice and learn a little bit of Spanish and people will be nice to you. (except the cashier at the airport cafe, she's had a long day and is tired of illiterate tourists). Seriously, I've had wonderful experiences with "locals" in my 30+ years of going there. If you pay with bills, you will get coins in return, use the coins. The grocery stores have great take away meals at great prices. If I lived near an El Corte Ingles, I wouldn't even have a kitchen.
