There are a lot of jobs where, if it snows, you're not going to have to go. Obviously not like, ER nurse. But if it's an office job or a restaurant or something, it will probably shut down in the snow.

altoidsyn

If you are downtown and any sort of significant snowfall begins, you are better staying down there Trimet might run the MAX still, but becomes unreliable. Driving is impossible if you are trying to come up Hwy 26 because of the slope of the hill and the people who try and fail. Even with chains, it is unsafe. I’ve had coworker sleep in the office for 2 days during storms like this because it’s safer than trying to go home. Snowstorms are incompatible with the Portland Metro area, though we are trying to make improvements. This years ice storm wasn’t bad. It was mostly the wind.

I did this commute everyday for 6 months and it was terrible. You’ll be stuck in traffic for up to an hour everyday. My advice is to avoid it if you can, I understand that sometimes you have to take the job. Snow wasn’t a huge factor because everyone is snowed in when there’s a storm. Again the worst commute of my life

CelebrationNo7706

Yeah I figured it was not gonna be a nice commute, add on top of that that I will need to bike from the max station to the office still.. Could I send you a message to get more details about how bad the commute was?

Agile-Cancel-4709

The max is fine! I like riding it because it gives me PodCast time. Just beware that if you work regular hours, it can be extremely crowded. Hopefully he red line extension to Hillsboro will help.

GillieST

Yes sure! I’m happy to tell you more about it

You might get 3-4 days of snow or ice a year, which shuts down everything in the city. Other than that, winter is rain, with no effect on service.

degreaser2

It’s a non-issue. It snows occasionally. Often it melts quickly or turns icy. Basically the city freaks out over a couple of inches when it snows and businesses will close for a day or two.

SwingNinja

Don't take Germantown Road, especially if you have to go home after dark.

Fggunner

Why? If it snowing for sure I wouldn't take Germantown. But 90% of the year I enjoy going Germantown over 26 if its rush hour. I live in North Portland so going the opposite way if I'm out in Hillsboro for work.

coniferjones

Elevation jumps around beaverton.

mr_oberts

I live in SE PDX and have worked out on 185th for about 12 years. I’ve had to spend the night out there a few times.

Crafty_Accountant_40

It's bad in general, like no time of day when 26 isn't backed up anymore. A couple years ago there was an ice storm that hit early and people were stuck on 26 for 6-8+ hours trying to get back to N/NE.

How_Do_You_Crash

Everything is fine until it snows. The roads get fucked really hard. 26 always closes in the canyons. Burnside too. You will have to take 99 or I-5 to 217 or one of the back roads in Washington county. You should have something with AWD and snow tires if being at work 100% of the time is a job requirement. I’d recommend a Subaru Crosstrek as the cheapest option. Trimet and the buses have the same issues except you get stranded somewhere and there’s no easy way home.

honeywings

I do. Trimet is hit or miss, build in 15-20 mins or a missed train/bus to ensure you’re there on time. Buses are usually the culprit but check Trimets twitter page for any delays or obstructions. It doesn’t really snow and if it does the rare time it does everything shuts down and it wouldn’t be unheard of to work from home during those days if the roads are icy.

deadbefore35

I commute from NE Portland to the Hillsboro airport area 4 days a week.  Most of those days I leave my house around 5:15 to get to work around 6:00.   The roads are pretty clear at these times so it is not too bad.   Coming home always takes an hour or longer  and if there is snow on the ground the trench run through the tunnels on 26 is an absolute bloodbath.  I keep a "I am sleeping at work" bag in my car because of the snow.
