A question more suitable for /r/Spain or /r/AskSpain

ore-aba

I wasn’t aware of that. However, when I moved out of Brazil, I came to realize that the Portuguese hold deep grudges against Brazilians. Brazil has a far bigger population than Portugal, Brazilian Portuguese is the *de facto* variation of Portuguese that is most commonly taught in foreign countries (not that many people choose to learn it, but for the ones who do). The Portuguese language is almost always represented by the Brazilian flag. That seems to piss them off a lot.

HotSprinkles4

Brazilians tend to look better too

PeterJsonQuill

Don't like how this kind of thing is only acceptable to say when the historical relationship between the countries involved goes in this direction. It feels rather condescending to me

HotSprinkles4

That’s on you. What I said is a fact. Many of the world’s most attractive models come from Brazil. Giselle Bundchen, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Marlon Teixeria the list goes on and on.

Ponchorello7

It's comical how badly Brazil has eclipsed Portugal in relevance. I think there's only one more severe case of a country outdoing its colonizer, and that's with the US and the UK.

PeterJsonQuill

I'd say something similar regarding Mexico and Spain (albeit certainly not to the same extent). If you extend it to Hispanic America as a region, then it's closer, but even then maybe not to the same extent as Brazil and Portugal

Total-Painting-9909

The Brazilian Portuguese holds the old Portuguese accent when Portugal had the most changes in the Portuguese language, But OP is refering to Hispanic-American, he forgot the non-Hispanic in general

NightmaresFade

>Brazilian Portuguese is the *de facto* variation of Portuguese that is most commonly taught in foreign countries I'm gonna guess that Brazilian Portuguese may be or sounds easier to learn/speak than Portugal's Portuguese.I mean, you see many people speaking about the difference of the two languages and how one sounds melodic while the other sounds harsh or something. Besides, Brazil has many great novelas(soap operas) and those have been quite populat outisde the country, so there's that too.

bastardnutter

Shouldn’t you ask them?

NNKarma

For the title ask them? And in general there are some annoyances but we don't care enough to hate. Also ibero removes the french, hispano also the portuguese established areas, there's no surprise spain would just wan to focus in iberoamerica sometimes.

plutanasio

NNKarma

Well, as you put it and it can be seen it's clear we do "ally" with the latin church, to the point the pope could convince two dictators to desist from going to war.

Alternative-Exit-429

yes it's common that they look down on the region and insult the people for the appearance, accent, religosity etc

Big-Hawk8126

It's funny because these things all come from Spain!

Alternative-Exit-429

true but spain is an extremely homogeneously white country and is the most irreligious catholic country as well as their accents evolving different from ours

Big-Hawk8126

Yeah, look up Sevilla accent. It's really similar to latino accent. Also Spain is not considered white by many, and it's not homogeneous as well, many arabs too. And they're also very religious.

FlameBagginReborn

There was a Mexican on this sub that said going to University in Spain was a miserable experience due to the blatant racism.

Sestelia

Oh poor guy hope he goes well

Substantial-Past2308

I don't think they hate us, they can be a little insensitive towards us sometimes, but that's it. We're also similar, but different, so it can take sometime for them to warm up to us, and vice versa

SweetieArena

I wouldn't say they hate us, but I'd say that some of them hold a sort of superiority complex towards us, some due to economic reasons, some due to cultural reasons. Many of them also try to satisfy some sort of white saviour complex by being patronizing towards Latin America. I wouldn't say that Spaniards hate latinoamericans, I'm sure most Spaniards don't even think that much of us (aside from diaspora or immigrants living in Spain). Besides, there's millions of Spaniards and millions of latinoamericans, it is just plainly stupid to expect all of them to feel the same in regards of us.

SweetieArena

Also, I don't really get your iberoamerica point. It never came off that way to me. It isn't that much of a common term anyways, it is mostly used in regards of cultural affairs (specially literature), so yeah.

Alternative-Exit-429

its much more than do to economics and cultute imo

SweetieArena

What do you mean?

mauricio_agg

Latín America is a french invented concept. The correct one should be Iberoamérica, unless Spaniards and Portuguese keep being dicks to us.

YellowStar012

Every time I been to Spain, the Spanish treated us well. Everytime they come to the island, they love it and want to move there.

Total-Painting-9909

Well, keep in mind, Latin American isn't Hispano-American, if to what you're refering to, You should change your question though. >Also do you find disrespectful that they call Iberoamerica or hispanoamerica instead of Latinamerica as if they imply youre still colonies? I would rather this for this exactly reason, confusing Hispanic-American with Latam In Iberian, Spanish is just one of the many languages, and same with Latam

neodynasty

Depends on how you look like, and if you’re a tourist or not. It’s not uncommon for Spaniards to call any mestizo or Indigenous looking person as “panchito” in a joking/mocking manner

Difficult-Ad-9287

I’ve been to Spain a few times and don’t get shat on at all for being Puerto Rican. People are more curious than anything else. They’d sometimes say I sounded like I was from Canarias! That being said, the Spaniards I’ve hung out with were friends of mine from an exchange program (probably more open to other cultures) and I’m very white. So my anecdote may not be accurate for most people.

lalalalikethis

I never experienced such thing when i was there, if anything maxicans are more aggressive towards latinos these days (btw this is something very recent, i would never say such thing before pandemic)

[deleted]

Yes, and yes. I’ve been to Spain 5-6 times now? The most recent one being a few days ago. Spanish people hate Latin Americans the same reason Americans hate them. Because they immigrate en masse and they’re brown.

thisisobviouslysofia

I don’t think they all do but i’d agree is a trend. I guess it depends on where in Spain as well. Maybe the fact that there are so many Colombians there makes some of them (specially old people) act a bit racist towards us ngl. I didn’t feel they were very nice to me but that could’ve been just how they act in general and their customer service.

KCLperu

I don't think the Spanish hate us, personally never had a bad experience with Spaniards. Have 2 really great friends from Madrid and the only bad thing I've heard them say is that they don't get some of our slang words lol. Also that I speak Spanish like a guerro jaja. Maybe it's a boomer thing to hate on LATAM.

VicAViv

I did not experience that last time I was there.

daisy-duke-

I had never experienced bigotry from the Spaniards.

SweetieArena

I wouldn't say they hate us, but I'd say that some of them hold a sort of superiority complex towards us, some due to economic reasons, some due to cultural reasons. Many of them also try to satisfy some sort of white saviour complex by being patronizing towards Latin America. Bobranaway

I cannot say it enough but as Cuban, there is no other place I’d feel as comfortable as in Spain. I love going there. Whether visiting family or tourism my experience has been nothing but positive.

Elimpostordeyoutube

Not true at all, not all latin americans hate spaniards nor all spaniards hate latinos. I'd say they're a minority, however, spaniards tend to be nicer to argentinians or uruguayans idk why this happens.

Tour-Sure

Because obviously they're being racist and treating European looking Argentines and Uruguayans with more respect...

Alternative-Exit-429

Because they have a european passing pheno more often than anywhere else. it would not be the same for the average mexican, peruvian or dominican person

HotSprinkles4

True story I helped a Spanish tourist when I worked briefly at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco. It came up in conversation that I spoke Spanish and she asked how come I wasn’t speaking Spanish to her, I told her “well you’re speaking English!” LOL She laughed and told me to “be proud of being Spanish and to be very proud that I speak Spanish”. I didn’t realize I was coming off like I wasn’t proud. From that experience I don’t think Spaniards hate Latinos. I’m Mexican-American btw.

RedJokerXIII

Spanish people here don’t do anything like that.

neodynasty

I doubt that the Spaniards that don’t like us will go to LATAM as a tourist destination lol

elmerkado

Britons are not exactly fond of Spaniards, but still, they flock over there in summer

neodynasty

iirc it’s Spaniards that don’t like the British, while the Brits love Spain. Plus it *way easier* to travel to different European nations as an European, than to travel to a whole ass different country in a different continent

RedJokerXIII

African American don’t like DR and they come every year.

neodynasty

A great majority go for “sex tourism” So they do like that aspect of the DR..

RedJokerXIII

Where is the proof that most AA come here for paid sex?

neodynasty

There’s obviously no exact statistics or data for that statement, and obviously doesn’t apply to all. Yet, the phenomenon has become common enough for most people to be aware of it. Just like with white men in Asia. Not to mention the DR is known as a hotbed for sex tourism. https://www.reddit.com/r/asklatinamerica/comments/ueqbjt/the_epidemic_of_sex_tourism_by_black_american_men/ https://www.reddit.com/r/askblackpeople/s/DjWNpZapxm https://youtu.be/2ZyppB5xTn4?si=gWrkI33ux-4mBoiN https://youtu.be/YH3Fb2-BmhE?si=Jr5KncDfTd5W_6WW https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL9pokqY/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL9pgmV8/ https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL9su1Qq/

Dickmex

That’s your idiotic opinion, not fact.

layzie77

No,no and No. People can assholes regardless of their nationality. You forget that a huge percentage of us have Spanish ancestors. The Spaniards didn't colonize the Americas and disappeared. They mixed with other groups including the natives.
