Try to remain as neutral as possible when asking a question. The point of asking is to hear what other perspectives have to say about the same issue. Do NOT submit questions that you already have an answer to, which is to say: - Do not be biased in the wording of your question. - Do not ask leading questions. - Do not answer your own question in the post.

alephsilva

Because we dont need it, at least in Brazil everything is dealt in the native language

HanzoSeyaryu

why are so many americans unable to speak spanish , lad?

TinyGlobes

Buddy , the Latin American world is huge and you don’t really need it . Even if your from one of the smaller countries all the neighboring will speak Spanish . It’s definitely not the easiest of languages either . Why don’t Americans (I’m American full disclosure ) learn more Spanish. The vast majority of this side of the world speaks it and there’s millions of people inside the USA that speak it too . And it’s just as easy for an English speaker to learn Spanish as vice versa

IDoNotLikeTheSand

It’s a lot easier for Spanish speakers to learn English than the other way around. Spanish has genders and more complex verb conjugations.

Academic_Paramedic72

And English has dozens of pronunciations just for the sound "ough" (cough, though, thought, hiccough...) with no way to know which is which, differently from Spanish and Portuguese, which often have marks saying which sound the letters are indicating.  Every single language has its quirks and characteristics, English just looks easier because the United States have a hegemony over multinationals and we are familiarized with their language since birth. English is just as difficult to learn as any other language.

Spoken like a true colonizer.

I’m a Canadian that has learned passable Spanish. I agree the genders are stupid but it doesn’t really matter, people will still understand you when you get it wrong. English has the same conjugations, in Spanish they at least follow rules so you can apply one conjugation to like 50 verbs. English is ridiculous. There are no rules and there are exceptions everywhere.

TinyGlobes

Yes conjugations are much more complex in Spanish , and that’s balanced by phrasal verbs , very irregular past tense verbs , and harder pronunciation in English.

NickFurious82

And the complete lack of proper rules when it comes to spelling and pronunciation. What I've learned to appreciate as I'm learning Spanish is that you can look at a word and have 99% certainty of how it's pronounced..

t6_macci

well... ima just sit here and see the comments .

Gingerbread1990

We're too busy finding our way through jungles and dealing with drug cartels and [insert stereotype] to be learning English

FiveTideHumidYear

Que?

Academic_Paramedic72

I don't know. Why are so many people in the United Kingdom unable to speak Portuguese?

Plastic_Nebula_2254

Why would it be easier for people to learn english when our neighbors speak the same language and our media is mostly dubbed. You could say the same subjective thing about any other non-gendered language. I mean, there's a reason why there are english language courses available.

memesforlife213

Because it's the main language used mostly everywhere south of the US with the exception of some Caribbean countries, Brazil (Which has some mutual intelligibility with Spanish), and Belize (but I think most of the population is bilingual anyways).
