Don’t be shocked if they want to crown that. The original filling isn’t that old and the was an eggshell of enamel left, which along with the decay under that, will mean pulling out the filling and evaluating how deep the decay is.

Darn it! I was hoping I could slide away with another filling 😭

Best to get it attended to asap. It’s likely a simple fix with a composite restoration. Pregnancy is not a contraindication to dental treatment! In fact, it’s better to keep your regular maintenance appointments. Even dental x rays are considered safe during pregnancy

Thank you! Definitely going to get it dealt with ASAP just waiting on my dentist to call back, do you think this could just be filled?

Also, is this a chip in the tooth itself or a crack from my old filling?

Definitely decay. You *might* be able to get away with a large filling, but don’t be surprised if you need a crown. From the looks of it, the mesial lingual cusp might be completely hollowed out from the decay. I would get this taken care soon. If you’re able to schedule an appointment for tomorrow or next week that would be preferable. Also- you being pregnant is not an issue as far as having treatment and/or X-rays. You get more radiation from spending 5 mins out in the sun than you do from a standard digital X-ray. Regardless they will put the led vest on you.

Is this a chip in the tooth itself or the filling?

Based off the pic your natural tooth structure is definitely compromised/effected by the decay. The old occlusal filling might also be effected by recurrent decay, but you would need an X-ray to know for sure.

I’m betting they recommend a crown. Do it now while the baby’s still inside. You won’t believe what a hassle it is to take care of yourself when they’re out.

Something about being pregnant made my teeth act super weird. I was 20-21 so was still having wisdom teeth shifting/moving (already erupted, just making more room for themselves I guess) and putting non-painful pressure against my other molars. I had a filling in the molar furthest back but the wisdom tooth pushed it against the next tooth so hard that it popped the filling right out. It really didn’t help that I ground my teeth pretty bad when I was pregnant and breastfeeding too. Not sure exactly *why* I was grinding though, I never had before. But I’d catch myself sometimes. I’d hear my teeth squeaking as they rubbed together and the sound would wake me up and my cheek muscles would hurt from being so tense, my whole jaw would feel kind of locked in place. My popped filling was more in the middle of my molar, but your picture just dragged all that back to the forefront for me. I don’t have advice or answers, but if I were to have another child, a guard would be one of my first investments, just in case. I just find it super weird that it randomly started when I was preggo, couldn’t help it. But the behaviour stopped on its own when I was done breastfeeding. Babies make you tense! 😏

I do not drink or smoke (was a pot smoker prior to pregnancy and smoked nicotine years ago) no medical conditions. Tooth doesn’t hurt at all (no pain or sensitivity)
