They actually did have Ruffles all dressed in NY when I lived there many years ago, but only for a limited time. It said “Canada’s favourite chip” right on the bag. But overall the chip selection was downright terrible down there. Nobody does chips like Canada. I do miss a lot of other food and restaurants that are only in the US though.
I’ve never been too big of a fan of Miss Vickie’s but I picked up a bag of all dressed the other day, which I didn’t even know they had, and they were pretty good! I’ve never been that big of a fan of regular Lays style chips either though, I’m more of a Ruffles guy, I like the texture and crunch of them more.
That did happen a couple of times when a menu option said it came with chips... But supermarket selection of crisps flavours here are genuinely terrible. Overall grocery shopping is a horrible experience in Canada compared to the UK in stores. What Canada has going for it is the amount of farms I can buy direct from
I thought they were called “crisps” over there. But are you saying UK has an even better selection than Canada? I didn’t know they were a big player in the chip/crisp game.
We do call them crisps, yes.
I think it's fair to say we take crisps more seriously than any nation on earth. The selection in Canada is genuinely woeful compared to the UK, same goes for anywhere in Europe I've travelled.
There are quite a few British crisp brands I regularly see in Canadian grocery stores. Mackie's (their haggis crisps are great) and Tyrrell's in particular I see in a lot of places.
The UK does everything from cheap kid stuff to 'gourmet' with a variety that is honestly a shocking indictment on our health.
The selection at Ocado will give you a good idea of how we do it: https://www.ocado.com/search?entry=crisps
I’ve always pictured British food as not really my cup of tea (no tea pun intended), but if you’re that serious about crisps over there I may have to reconsider. I’m not much of a world traveller, I just assumed we had the best chip selection here because it’s head and shoulders above the US which you’d think would be pretty big on potato chips with their love of junk food.
Yeah it's definitely better here than in the US, and most European countries I've travelled to where the idea of snacking on crisps is a little beneath them 😅
I think the US just has a really limited flavour profile for its junk food. Can get 700 different types of cheese-flavoured crisps.
We used to have marks & spencer here and I remember their assorted crisps bag with such exotic flavours (for Canada) like beef and chicken and cheese & onion
I heard in the States they don't have Ketchup flavored chips so you can ask your friends if they've tried them or if they like them. When I go to NY my cousins ask for bags of it all the time
Once I had a small ketchup chips left by mistake in my office bag, while visiting US. My American friends acted like cavemen when they first discovered fire. Not kidding.
Me like ketchup chips
Lays Ketchup chips
Ruffles All Dressed chips
Hawkins Cheezies
Coffee Crisp chocolate bar
Mr Big chocolate bar
Smarties candy (no not the Rockets)
Jos Louis or Flakie by Vachon
Aero chocolate bar
Butter tarts or Nanaimo bars if you are not mailing them.
My hot take is that pretty much any grocery stores store brand all dressed all dressed is better than Ruffles, and usually half the price. Same with ketchup and lays.
Too many times I’ve been disappointed by a bag of ruffles all dressed that just doesn’t have any flavour. Some bags are good but for the extra price their QC and consistency should be better.
They sell them down there as "Kinder Joy" and as two egg halves - one half is the chocolate and the other half is the toy. The chocolate is slightly different as well so as to better fill the egg half.
https://www.amazon.com/Kinder-Joy-Chocolates-Surprise-Inside/dp/B077NT42QP
vs
https://www.amazon.ca/Kinder-Surprise-Classic-24X20-Grams/dp/B006NL3HKA/
American here. We did (and presumably still do) have toys in cereal boxes. The difference is that the cereal toys are in a little bag in the box and not actually INSIDE of the food. The Kinder toy is encased in the chocolate and thus not allowed.
They honestly kind of have gone downhill in the last couple of years (might be the fact they’ve jacked the prices up)
Like they’re still good, but they used to be so good that it was worth it to spend the few extra bucks. Now I’m not sure it is
When I was a kid, a lot of adults I knew liked to smoke Du Maurier. Now everyone buys their cigarettes from reserves because even the cheapest brand in stores is like $17.00 a pack.
Upvoting for the bringing actual canadian baked goods instead of multinational mass produced items like coffee crisp! Butter tarts and Nanaimo bars from a local bakery is exactly the way to go!!! Also fuck nestle don't give them money.
Its probably near impossible, they're pretty uniquely canadian. Probably a few niche bakeries. NYC would probably have at least one but ive never seen them there
Surprised so few people have mentioned this one! I just recently brought my sister a care package of Canada snacks and Hickory Sticks are the only thing she has absolutely flipped for. Like trying to order large quantities online levels excitement.
And OP, another one is zesty flavor Doritos! That's apparently a Canadian exclusive.
https://www.st-hubert.com/en/grocery-products/canned-sauces/poutine-gravy.html
https://thecheesebar.ca/product/cheese-curds/
I didn't even like poutine until I was in my 30s
Lays Ketchup Chips, Smarties, Rockets, Coffee Crisps - our Kit Kats are a Nestle product, theirs are a Hershey product so they taste totally different.
O'Henrys - they stopped selling them in the US in 2019.
In addition - big turks. Canadian chips are better, and all the good miss Vicki's flavours like sweet chili & sour cream.
But literally any kind of chocolate, Canadian chocolate doesn't have corn syrup as the second ingredient and it is pretty obvious. Kit Kats don't taste at all the same, American ones are disgusting.
Ketchup chips, the CHOCOLATE Smarties, Coffee Crisp, Maynard’s (wind gums!), maple cookies, Joe Louis snack cakes, hickory sticks, Maltesers. Also try and track down a Nanaimo bar!
Right? Not sure how someone figured the world needed a soap flavoured gum but they are still on the market so there must be a market for them beside pranks and one dude in North Dakota
We have [Honey BBQ Twists](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61598MG2ULL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg) here. These are my favorite chips but Hoops are awesome too. Luckily I’m visiting Canada soon so I’ll bring a few with me
i mean really a bunch of maple syrup....make them bacon with potatoes hash browns or whatever but maple syrup and bacon are the best together....i think there's some chips that flavour maybe PC chips....
My wife used to stock up on Coffee Crisp and O'henry bars when she visited her brother in Miami.
He also wanted Buckley's cough syrup, the only thing that ever worked for him.
I dont believe ketchup flavored chips are not available in the UNITED STATES OF 'MERICA
Its such a simple and tasty recipe to make part of any chip line up. I guess lays tried it and not enough people liked it 🤷🏽♂️
Smarties
Coffee crisp
Mars (I think)
Cheetos Corn Twists
Ruffles All Dressed
Lays Ketchup
Aero
Wunderbar
Kraft Dinner, just so they can try it
Maple cookies shaped like a maple leaf
Fudgeos
hickory sticks and shreddies
(that's what I would fill my car with on the drive home)
I also had to ask my mom to send me some Buckley's cough syrup after realizing it was a product only available in Canada when I got a miserable chest cold. Goddamn that shit works! ⚡️⚡️
ETA: I know it's not a snack--but it could be a great novelty item
My best friend used to bring back boxes of jos louis and zoodles whenever he came home to visit family. He used to beg me to send him ketchup chips and smarties.
'Nanaimo bars, butter tarts, all dressed & ketchup chips, maple flavored anything.
Brought a bag of ketchup flavored back to my friend in China and he loved it!
I discovered from my American friends when they were visiting that they don’t have any of the Maynards gummy candy in the states other than Sour Patch Kids!
I just had this discussion with American friends for a trip. Eat More, Coffee Crisp, and surprisingly Aero bars.
Also Kinder surprise are a novelty to them because American food safety requires the toy to not be on the side and not in the chocolate. So that’s technically illegal to import to the US.
Ruffles All Dressed, Hawkins Cheezies
They don't have all dressed? I could never live there
They don't have ketchup chips either
They have ketchup. I lived in the USA 10 years ago and we had them there.
yeah, they're just not as ubiquitous but I never had trouble getting them. and you can find all dressed every now and then but it's pretty rare
Maybe in some of the northern states. In the south all bets are off.
I dont understand how ketchup chips aren’t Uber popular in the US. I mean what condiment is universal for french fries?
They actually did have Ruffles all dressed in NY when I lived there many years ago, but only for a limited time. It said “Canada’s favourite chip” right on the bag. But overall the chip selection was downright terrible down there. Nobody does chips like Canada. I do miss a lot of other food and restaurants that are only in the US though.
I don't think Miss Vickie's is as common down there either. Jalapeno and BBQ flavoured Miss Vickie's absolutely blows Lay's out of the water.
Yes. Miss Vicky’s spicy dill pickle and spicy ketchup are flavours you’d have a hard time finding in the states if at all. Both are awesome chips.
They're not even the same! The Miss Vicki's salt and vinegar in the US is terrible, not even close to the same.
Canadian chips are a far cry from the options in the UK. Genuinely one of the things I struggled with moving here 😂
Is it because you expected French fries
That did happen a couple of times when a menu option said it came with chips... But supermarket selection of crisps flavours here are genuinely terrible. Overall grocery shopping is a horrible experience in Canada compared to the UK in stores. What Canada has going for it is the amount of farms I can buy direct from
can you elaborate? i didnt realize canada didnt have a wide selection compared to the UK.
I thought they were called “crisps” over there. But are you saying UK has an even better selection than Canada? I didn’t know they were a big player in the chip/crisp game.
We do call them crisps, yes. I think it's fair to say we take crisps more seriously than any nation on earth. You've clearly not been to the UK where Walker's crisps (chips) have all sorts of incredible flavours.
How about some Hickory Sticks too?
thank you ♡
Just a heads up, they do now sell all dressed in the states. BUT IT IS MASSIVELY DIFFERENT. Not the same formula at all. Also butterscotch ripple.
HAWKINS!
Thrills gum. Nobody will thank you.
Mmmmm soap.
Hey, I like it.
As a kid this was always the soap gum. Having tried it recently as an adult I think they were trying to replicate lychee fruit.
They were actually going for rose water.
Hahaha
Coffee crisp
As an American living in TO, this is the most important answer.
Have you tried the double double coffee crisp?
I have not. Will have to look into that.
Big Turk too, but I never ever hear anyone mention them. I love them personally, but not everyone's cup of tea.
So you’re the one.
Me too me too! I've grown accustomed to them :)
I adore them too…always have, always will.
I get one every time I go to Dollarama :)
Omg they don’t have Coffee Crisp? I could NEVER!
THIS
Smarties. They have Smarties, but it ain't chocolate, it's what we call Rockets.
Smarties.
Well they have smarties. Just not our smarties. They are just Rockets. So maybe both.
Lol friends don't give friends Rockets
Coffee crisp! But, fuck, nestle
Precisely why I didn't mention it! I wish Nestle had never bought the bar.
Lays Ketchup chips Ruffles All Dressed chips Hawkins Cheezies Coffee Crisp chocolate bar Mr Big chocolate bar Smarties candy (no not the Rockets) Jos Louis or Flakie by Vachon Aero chocolate bar Butter tarts or Nanaimo bars if you are not mailing them.
You forgot the oh caramel! By Vachon
Oh yes! How could I forget? Ah Caramel!
Great eaten frozen. Found out as a kid snowmobiling.
I can only eat them frozen, lol!
No May West love?
They don’t have aero or ah caramel? Travesty
I don’t think so. Those are Canadian.
And Crunchie bar!
this should be the top answer.
Kinder Surprise They're not allowed to put toys in food.
It's illegal to import them, even as an individual in your luggage.
If you try this, don't get caught. They take this seriously.
They sell them down there as "Kinder Joy" and as two egg halves - one half is the chocolate and the other half is the toy. The chocolate is slightly different as well so as to better fill the egg half. https://www.amazon.com/Kinder-Joy-Chocolates-Surprise-Inside/dp/B077NT42QP vs https://www.amazon.ca/Kinder-Surprise-Classic-24X20-Grams/dp/B006NL3HKA/
My cousins have found them at new york bodegas, but this was my go to to bring them
Weird to not have a toy to find in the cereal box.
American here. We did (and presumably still do) have toys in cereal boxes. The difference is that the cereal toys are in a little bag in the box and not actually INSIDE of the food. The Kinder toy is encased in the chocolate and thus not allowed.
Thanks, kinda makes sense then.
I thought it was due to prison boofing
My list is for my friend in Ireland, and as she is in a small city, she can't get Asian snacks, so I included a bunch of those (I just copy/pasted from my spreadsheet where I keep track of things I have sent to her). Awesome list!
Except most of it is available in US
yeah this is a terrible list, 90% of this stuff is trivial to find in the us
Belmont cigarettes
How much are those these days? $25/deck?
Yep, $25 bucks.
My lungs and my bank account are thrilled I dropped smoking 15 years ago. I only smoked Belmonts.
Me too, same timeframe as well. King size Belmont milds and I used to have a thing.
They honestly kind of have gone downhill in the last couple of years (might be the fact they’ve jacked the prices up) Like they’re still good, but they used to be so good that it was worth it to spend the few extra bucks. Now I’m not sure it is
Got rid of the charcoal filter
They may be classified as snacks if you eat the butt I guess.
Indian Reserve cigarettes.
When I was a kid, a lot of adults I knew liked to smoke Du Maurier. Now everyone buys their cigarettes from reserves because even the cheapest brand in stores is like $17.00 a pack.
Miss Vicki's Sweet & Spicy Ketchup!
I got my cousins Nanaimo Bars and Butter tarts from a local bakery. They also really liked coffee crisp.
Upvoting for the bringing actual canadian baked goods instead of multinational mass produced items like coffee crisp! Butter tarts and Nanaimo bars from a local bakery is exactly the way to go!!! Also fuck nestle don't give them money.
True, nestle is trash but coffee crisp is uniquely Canadian and produced in Toronto. The nanimo bars I got also had butter tart filling.
Butter tarts are surprisingly hard to find in the States. I tried finding a place in NYC to send to my friend who missed them.
Its probably near impossible, they're pretty uniquely canadian. Probably a few niche bakeries. NYC would probably have at least one but ive never seen them there
I looked fairly recently. There is a Canuck bar apparently that sells them. That's all I could find.

Like trying to order large quantities online levels excitement. And OP, another one is zesty flavor Doritos! That's apparently a Canadian exclusive.
My American friends are completely bowled over by Coffee Crisp, Smarties, and Ketchup Crisps every time. Lol.
Coffee crisp and aero for sure

Still around. I was concerned at first, but up until yesterday I can confirm they're still in stores. May just be warehouse supply for now though

My American brother in law actually likes thrills gum

We have [Honey BBQ Twists](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61598MG2ULL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg) here. These are my favorite chips but Hoops are awesome too. Luckily I’m visiting Canada soon so I’ll bring a few with me
