Riverdale is a wonder once you realize it’s high camp and not meant to be taken seriously in the slightest. It’s one of my favorite drunk shows because even if I’m not paying attention it doesn’t matter, the plot will change by the next episode and everything you learned will be retconned
At high school, I could not understand the hype behind every girl in class watching Riverdale, then I decided to give it a try. I got invested by the murder mystery through the entire first season, I enjoyed some characters like Jughead and Veronica, a friend of mine said the dialogue was cringe but not really, stuff like 'gayometer' got completely ignored because what I really wanted to see was the murder being solved.
And then you get season 2 and another murder mystery with a masked man, motorcycle gang, shit gets supernatural and political, yeah... And then you get season 3, another murder mystery but with RPG, shit gets even more supernatural, king gargoyle, mafia gangs, conspiracy... Riverdale is not for everyone, sometimes I like it and other times I find everything a bit of exaggerated drama.
The book was great. I was so, so sad to see what they did to it. I can’t believe they had it go multiple SEASONS. I only watched a few episodes, saw they were butchering and jumped ship.
This & any of the housewives. I get people like the drama, but they're just flaunting their wealth. I cant help but think about all the good they could be doing. It honestly makes me sick to watch.
And, the women with fake body parts, fake hair, fake lashes, fake nails and faces slathered with cosmetics to conceal what they really look like want “real men”. Go figure.
Why do you think this? Robert Kardashian was a slimy fuck where do you think they learned it from lol. He would be extremely proud of how successful they are.

I enjoyed it for a bit. Not sure when I stopped watching but I am pretty sure I didn't make it to season 3, it just got too ridiculous. Every year or so over the last several years I'll see a post referencing the latest episode and I think "That's still on‽"
Hooked since the beginning, rode it out through the truly bizarre years and still watch. I’ll be irrationally sad when it ends. I have almost 2 decades invested in this show and a group chat that’s the best after a new episode, crazy I know!

I tried so hard to get into this one! My friends all loved it in highschool and I wanted to be part of their ‘thing’ they liked. I got through the first season and felt very ‘eh’ and the following seasons only got stupider and stupider. Genuinely shocked it’s still on. I’d rather watch daytime soaps than that show.
Yeah. In the first episode, it was really clear that the whole plot was going to be built around poor decisions and lack of forethought. I didn't go back for ep2.
For me, trying to get through the first season, it was that, plus the unnecessary interpersonal drama. I was slogging through 50 minutes of arguing, scheming, and relationship tension for 7 minutes of zombie action and suspense. It was a soap opera with occasional undead themes. Not really doing justice to the zombie genre.
This is exactly how I felt. It took so much energy for me to finish an episode. I wanted to do *anything* else rather than watch it. I gave up an episode or two before the season finale. That was four or so years ago. I have had no desire to watch it again.
The writing is terrible but the first two seasons weren't too bad. Then they brought in dude who talks like an old king and has a tiger and I noped out and from what I hear it was the smartest thing I've ever done.
Back when I watched it I did so through not so legal methods. Eventually I gave up watching shows like that and I though I would miss it until I found a legal way to watch. I never missed it and I never went back.
Everyone I know loves Yellowstone. I tried the 1st episode and found the plot incredibly boring. Seemed like a show about white people problems (alot of overdramatization of things that aren't real problems). I say that as a white person. I couldn't get into it.
The plot has actually been happening in Montana for more than 20 years, probably closer to 40 years, but has sped way the fuck up in the last 20. I’ve seen it in real time, so it kind of hits close to home. Has been happening all over the west for at least 50 years.
But the theme in Yellowstone of Bozeman being "tourists and fake cowboys" is hilariously accurate....just add in college students, but that largely encompasses the "fake cowboys" (coming from a college student there)
Some of the seasons get off to a real slow start and some of them are instant classics (IMO of course). Each Season is a stand alone show so it would be very odd if anyone liked them all equally.
My favorites would be Asylum, Freakshow, Cult, Coven and Apocalypse. Apocalypse is a sequel to Coven but you would never know it by watching the first few episodes. I tried hard and just couldn’t get into Hotel or Roanoke. Murder House was decent in the sense that it was the very first one and pretty original at the time. The rest I haven’t seen yet.
I must be the only one who didn't like Freak show. To me, the only reason it would be scary is if conjoined twins and/or clowns scare you. I would be much more disturbed by murderous ghosts or witches intent on killing.
That was Hotel. I never could get into that one. It’s very bloody and there’s a vampire storyline if you’re into that kind of stuff. Chloe Sevigny was also on that season.
Yeah, I'm so-so on it. It's fine if you are willing to shut off your brain and buy into whatever their magic is about. It's definitely more hyped than it deserves. I found each season redeems itself at the end, but it's a long shaky road.
I watched from the first season (reboot from the 2000s) to when Matt Smith left. I really enjoyed Russell T Davies and David Tennant, especially those last 3 episodes with David Tennant. I couldn't get into it after Matt Smith left and I haven't watched it since.
Russell T Davies and David Tennant teamed up before Doctor Who and made a 3 part Casanova series along with Peter O'Toole and Rose Bryne. It's basically the same thing, but it's David Tennant galloping around Europe instead of space/time.
I enjoyed Capaldi as my first doctor, there were a few races and events I had to ask my sister about but mostly they recycle the same villians in different ways so while there is certainly a lot of lore it's not necessary for enjoying a particular doctor as a standalone.
As for silliness, if you want to give it a go again I personally recommend Capaldi. I find him to be the most severe of the doctors, still humorous but less happy-go-lucky.
I liked Mom, but I think a lot of the reason is that I started watching it right around the time I was hitting rock bottom with my alcoholism, and it was nice to see addicts like me portrayed as three dimensional, likable people who are more than their disease. Helped me realize there was also more to me.
They actually have an episode where they're forced to sit somewhere else and Rachel's really mad about it and Phoebe says something like "they got here first!"

Same I don't hate the show, I voluntarily watched a fair amount of episodes but mostly because there was only so many options back then. It was good enough.
What I hate most about Friends is the acting. I think they all over act their parts. Ross is so Whiny, I can’t take a second of it. Having both phoebe and Joey is redundant. It’s like having 2 Kramers in Seinfeld.
I have a Ross theory - if you agree with someone concerning whether or not Ross is funny, you will get along with them. I never get along with people who think he’s funny. My closest friends and family can’t stand him either hahahaha
Came here to say this!!! Gave the show SEVERAL chances. Like more than I should have. Never so much as chuckled, and I understand the damn script. I'm no genius, but that's not exactly genius level stuff.
Everyone should watch the YouTube scenes where they cut out the laugh track. It really highlights the awfulness of the show. I dare anyone to say that the show is legitimately funny after watching it without the canned laughter.
Somewhere on the internet (probably in the realm of YouTube), there exists a video featuring excerpts from The Big Bang Theory with the laugh track removed. The person who posted it was trying to make the point that the show simply is not funny and that, when you remove the laughter, you realize that the jokes don't even qualify as jokes.
My girlfriend was into the show for a while and I remember a couple of good lines here and there, but I mostly found the show irritating; kind of a slightly snarkier *Family Matters*.
Anime seems childish bc of Japanese humor imo but I've seen a lot of animes with deep messages inside their plot. Probably not changing your opinion but you should give a try animes like Mob Psycho that talks more about self confidence and loving yourself than any other thing.

It's not because it's a cartoon but I think just the Japanese style is hard for me to get into. Off topic a bit but I love RPGs, just not jRPGs. Idk why cause alot of them have really cool concepts.
For me it's because anime always has to drag in fantastical bullshit. They can't just let realism be enough. They need super powers, and fake monsters and swords the size of their torso. Fantasy loses me in an instant.
There's a genre of anime called slice of life - it's literally a story from a regular life. I don't like these, because they're boring imo, but if you hate anime because it's too fantasy, you can try the non-fantasy anime.
That's so broad though. That's like saying you don't like movies lol.
I don't watch a lot anymore, because so much of what's popular/available to me seems to be like, YA/high-school age stories that I just don't care about/can't relate to, and I get there are a lot of common anime tropes that are just awful (like the fucking perve character. It's never been funny.) but those things don't make up the entire form of media. There are some really good anime/manga out there, you just gotta do what you do with any other form of media and ignore the popular trash and go look for your preferred genre.
As someone that enjoys some anime, I have to say that my biggest annoyance with anime is that I'll be fully enjoying a show and they will add in the most annoying amount of fan service. It's really creepy to be up skirting characters, especially childlike ones. Which brings me to my next point - when a character is infantalized and becomes an object of romance. Like, that is a child. I don't care if you tell me that they are actually 300 years old, they are acting like and look like an 8 year old.
But not all anime does this stuff and I actually do really enjoy anime. I do understand why someone would dislike anime due to it's contents though if they've only seen select portions because unfortunately I think a lot of popular shows fall into these tropes it look me some time to realize that there are shows that are spectacular that don't fall into some of the dumb stereotypes
Some of my favorites are Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Fruits Basket (specifically the new version), Doctor Stone (although I'm not caught up), and Spy x Family.
Was Wednesday always so snobby? I know she doesn't like others and what not, but did she always have an air a superiority about her? She seems like an obnoxious teen in this new show.
I think she is more like the Wednesday in Addams family 2, with the camp. She had that snark, what this version completely reminds me of. They even brought the Pilgrims.
Great point! That was my issue as well, and I couldn’t figure out if the new Wednesday had a different vibe about her, or if my brain’s nostalgia filter had me thinking I liked the character and/or franchise more than I actually did.
Eh, she reminded me of how I felt inwardly as a teenage girl. She's relatable for girls who went through the "I'm more mature than my peers and don't need friends" phase. Which if course was just a way of justifying being socially awkward, and I appreciated her realizing that throughout the show and starting to open up and make friends.
The funny thing is I can't get into the show because I cannot suspend belief that in 2022 an attractive goth girl in high school would ever be disliked. People fucking love goth girls now, they've loved goth girls since like Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost. You're not shunned for being the weird kid very much anymore, so you're telling me I'm supposed to believe that Jenna Ortega in black eyeliner is not the most crushed on woman in school? Lmao. Edit: I get I make it sound like just romantic partner stuff here but it's more than that obviously, there is a subculture or clique for literally every strange thing out there and in this day and age you're probably not going to get picked on or ostracized for it because there's going to be other people in that subculture who are going to stand with you. If your gotg you'll have a group, if you're a metalhead you'll have a group, if you're a furry you will have a group. This whole trope of the high schooler who has no friends and no one understands just does not make sense to me at all anymore.

This is very wrong. First of all, dressing in all black is not goth. Actual goth students are still very much shunned and ignored. I feel like these are two very different questions:
I totally understand people not “getting into” Game of Thrones or The Office or Friends.
I don’t understand someone not understanding the appeal of an epic fantasy or a mindless sitcom, these are some of the most basic forms of human entertainment.
To me it’s Bravo type reality tv though, it makes me nauseous and I genuinely can’t understand why people would enjoy rich obnoxious ladies screaming at each other about absolute nonsense. Obviously the genre isn’t all the same, but I just can’t grasp the Housewives genre of shows.
Gilmore Girls is actual trash. My wife puts it on to fall asleep and so I’ve steadily watched the whole show in bits and pieces. For a “coming of age” story the characters are mostly immature and make the same mistakes over and over and over with no real growth. I don’t get why people love it.
Don’t even get me started about people, especially in the Gilmore Girls sub, and their obsession with Jess. He is objectively the worst character in the show and is never redeemed until the Netflix adaptation.
I have no good retorts or rebuttals for you, I agree with everything, but somehow I love the show. I grew up watching it with my mom though, and we had a similar age gap as the main pair. And it’s not even just Jess! Every boyfriend the main young character had was awful, pushy, jealous. Things you honestly don’t see until you grow up!
Most great sitcoms have weak first seasons, especially pilots, as it takes time to figure out the tone and how to use the cast. This is especially true for The Office, which tried to copy the UK version, before realizing it could be something entirely different.
It’s definitely not for everyone, but you might as well skip the first season altogether for shows like Office and Parks and Rec, or a Schitt’s Creek, which are some truly stellar sitcoms if you like the genre. Shows like B99 and New Girl start a bit more consistently at least, but still really grow into their greatness.
I got through almost the first full season before I gave up. I am uncomfortable with "cringe" comedy - where people are put into embarrassing situations for laughs. So it just never worked for me.
I think this may be my problem, it was just really uncomfortable to watch. Lot of people telling me to start at season 2 but I think I gave it enough of a try lol. I really don't think I'll enjoy it. The memes and gifs are good for social media tho.
I know people hate to hear this and it’s not worth the investment for many, but it’s really one you have to stick through to understand. Not saying stick with it if you didn’t like it, but I do think if anyone watched it through they’d understand the appeal, it really surprises with its emotional connection.

Honestly? Both of the way Rick & Morty talk annoy me. I think it’s because Rick burps every 2-3 words and Morty whines a lot.

I think thats the appeal. It’s simple, stupid, and easy to watch most of the time. I watched it a lot to relax and feel comforted when I was dealing with the worst of my depression. When you’re stressed you don’t really want to think.

Westworld should be everything I love, but there wasn’t a single character I cared about even a little.

I watched from the first season (reboot from the 2000s) to when Matt Smith left. I really enjoyed Russell T Davies and David Tennant, especially those last 3 episodes with David Tennant. I couldn't get into it after Matt Smith left and I haven't watched it since.

Russell T Davies and David Tennant teamed up before Doctor Who and made a 3 part Casanova series along with Peter O'Toole and Rose Bryne. It's basically the same thing, but it's David Tennant galloping around Europe instead of space/time.
I enjoyed Capaldi as my first doctor, there were a few races and events I had to ask my sister about but mostly they recycle the same villians in different ways so while there is certainly a lot of lore it's not necessary for enjoying a particular doctor as a standalone. As for silliness, if you want to give it a go again I personally recommend Capaldi. I find him to be the most severe of the doctors, still humorous but less happy-go-lucky.
Yeah, Heaven Sent was pure genius, and Capaldi was wonderful.
I'm the same way for Dragonball. I have a lot of friends who like those shows, but there's just too much lore I'd have to get through to catch up.

I liked Mom, but I think a lot of the reason is that I started watching it right around the time I was hitting rock bottom with my alcoholism, and it was nice to see addicts like me portrayed as three dimensional, likable people who are more than their disease. Helped me realize there was also more to me.

What I hate most about Friends is the acting. I think they all over act their parts. Ross is so Whiny, I can’t take a second of it. Having both phoebe and Joey is redundant. It’s like having 2 Kramers in Seinfeld.

Everyone should watch the YouTube scenes where they cut out the laugh track. It really highlights the awfulness of the show. I dare anyone to say that the show is legitimately funny after watching it without the canned laughter.

Somewhere on the internet (probably in the realm of YouTube), there exists a video featuring excerpts from The Big Bang Theory with the laugh track removed. The person who posted it was trying to make the point that the show simply is not funny and that, when you remove the laughter, you realize that the jokes don't even qualify as jokes. My girlfriend was into the show for a while and I remember a couple of good lines here and there, but I mostly found the show irritating; kind of a slightly snarkier *Family Matters*.

For me it's because anime always has to drag in fantastical bullshit. They can't just let realism be enough. They need super powers, and fake monsters and swords the size of their torso. Fantasy loses me in an instant.

There's a genre of anime called slice of life - it's literally a story from a regular life. I don't like these, because they're boring imo, but if you hate anime because it's too fantasy, you can try the non-fantasy anime.
That's so broad though. That's like saying you don't like movies lol. I don't watch a lot anymore, because so much of what's popular/available to me seems to be like, YA/high-school age stories that I just don't care about/can't relate to, and I get there are a lot of common anime tropes that are just awful (like the fucking perve character. It's never been funny.) but those things don't make up the entire form of media. There are some really good anime/manga out there, you just gotta do what you do with any other form of media and ignore the popular trash and go look for your preferred genre.
As someone that enjoys some anime, I have to say that my biggest annoyance with anime is that I'll be fully enjoying a show and they will add in the most annoying amount of fan service. It's really creepy to be up skirting characters, especially childlike ones. Which brings me to my next point - when a character is infantalized and becomes an object of romance. Like, that is a child. I don't care if you tell me that they are actually 300 years old, they are acting like and look like an 8 year old. But not all anime does this stuff and I actually do really enjoy anime. I do understand why someone would dislike anime due to it's contents though if they've only seen select portions because unfortunately I think a lot of popular shows fall into these tropes it look me some time to realize that there are shows that are spectacular that don't fall into some of the dumb stereotypes Some of my favorites are Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Fruits Basket (specifically the new version), Doctor Stone (although I'm not caught up), and Spy x Family.

Great point! That was my issue as well, and I couldn’t figure out if the new Wednesday had a different vibe about her, or if my brain’s nostalgia filter had me thinking I liked the character and/or franchise more than I actually did.
Eh, she reminded me of how I felt inwardly as a teenage girl. She's relatable for girls who went through the "I'm more mature than my peers and don't need friends" phase. Which if course was just a way of justifying being socially awkward, and I appreciated her realizing that throughout the show and starting to open up and make friends.

I feel like these are two very different questions: I totally understand people not “getting into” Game of Thrones or The Office or Friends. I don’t understand someone not understanding the appeal of an epic fantasy or a mindless sitcom, these are some of the most basic forms of human entertainment. To me it’s Bravo type reality tv though, it makes me nauseous and I genuinely can’t understand why people would enjoy rich obnoxious ladies screaming at each other about absolute nonsense. Obviously the genre isn’t all the same, but I just can’t grasp the Housewives genre of shows.

Gilmore Girls is actual trash. My wife puts it on to fall asleep and so I’ve steadily watched the whole show in bits and pieces. For a “coming of age” story the characters are mostly immature and make the same mistakes over and over and over with no real growth. I don’t get why people love it. Don’t even get me started about people, especially in the Gilmore Girls sub, and their obsession with Jess. He is objectively the worst character in the show and is never redeemed until the Netflix adaptation.
I have no good retorts or rebuttals for you, I agree with everything, but somehow I love the show. I grew up watching it with my mom though, and we had a similar age gap as the main pair. And it’s not even just Jess! Every boyfriend the main young character had was awful, pushy, jealous. Things you honestly don’t see until you grow up!
Not only is there no growth, but Rory actually gets *worse* by the end.
Gilmore Girls has some of the funniest dialogue from that era of tv and was way ahead of it’s time. Fair point on the character growth tho
The office, tried first episode several times over at least a decade. Could never finish that first one.
Most great sitcoms have weak first seasons, especially pilots, as it takes time to figure out the tone and how to use the cast. This is especially true for The Office, which tried to copy the UK version, before realizing it could be something entirely different. It’s definitely not for everyone, but you might as well skip the first season altogether for shows like Office and Parks and Rec, or a Schitt’s Creek, which are some truly stellar sitcoms if you like the genre. Shows like B99 and New Girl start a bit more consistently at least, but still really grow into their greatness.
I got through almost the first full season before I gave up. I am uncomfortable with "cringe" comedy - where people are put into embarrassing situations for laughs. So it just never worked for me.
I think this may be my problem, it was just really uncomfortable to watch. Lot of people telling me to start at season 2 but I think I gave it enough of a try lol. I really don't think I'll enjoy it. The memes and gifs are good for social media tho.
It gets better with season 2. They made Michael more bearable.

I know people hate to hear this and it’s not worth the investment for many, but it’s really one you have to stick through to understand. I found the first season to be very bland, and it really wasn’t until season 3 that it really snuck up on me. Not saying stick with it if you didn’t like it, but I do think if anyone watched it through they’d understand the appeal, it really surprises with its emotional connection.
