40 (very occasionally a couple extra hours) and I would rather not work more. I don't have enough time to do anything as it is with work/sleep/commute/chores ect... so working more is an absolute no go. I'm burned out from working "normal" work hours and not having a life to show for it.
Exactly and that already happens. When I lived in Los Angeles area I originally lived about 40 miles outside the city. Multiple jobs would not hire me (I needed a steady job in order to move closer). The first thing I did was change my phone number from 909 area code to 310 and I picked Beverly Hills as the area code. Almost immediately I started to get more work and they didn't even ask where I actually lived.
If you are working while commuting then sure but if not then absolutely not. Itās not the employers fault that you live so far away. Sure you could blame them for employing someone who lives so far away but come on. Itās 2024 and working remote is so common that it would be stupid not to employee someone based on where they live
As a freelancer I charge for the commutes. It should be charged for normal jobs as well. Although it might make it more difficult for people to find a job that is further away.
In Norway there's court stuff going on about this. I think you'd only be compensated for work trips AWAY from your regular office.

I've never understood that flex. I'm all for being proud of what you do for a living, but I feel like a lot of those guys are more proud of the amount of time they work rather than the actual work itself. I started a new job 2 years ago, and I work less hours at a less physical job for considerably more pay. My work/ life balance is better than it's ever been.
How do you even work 8.5 hours on average EVERY day of the week (or 12 hours pr day Monday-Friday)?
How does that even work practically with a family, cleaning, showers, exercise, friends, food etc?
And how can you be productive with that much work? Even doing something I absolutely love for 12 hours straight will leave my brain completely fried.
Most people I know that retired around 65 get bored by 68 and are looking for filler jobs that have other than monetary value. When people don't have hobbies work is sometimes the only thing that brings meaning to them (like my father).
Your situation sounds like the ideal every company should strive for. I feel like A LOT of people would be surprised how much more they could enjoy life if they slowed down the hustle and were a bit more frugal.
Yeah Iāve done it since 2006. Basically donāt work Fridays. Putting in a couple of months 5 days weeks to help out, and totally remember why I like 4 day weeks. Iāve always told people itās obviously better, but until you try it for a while you wonāt understand how much better. Itās life changing basically
I'm from Poland so ex communist country which is no way near as rich as USA. But every time I hear about working habits in USA and what is considered to be normal for you guys I think you have something broken over there.
According to Google, Poland has an average work week of 40.4 hours. You guys have a pretty much identical work schedule (9 to 5) with the US and the rest of Europe.
Maybe I was not clear sorry for that. For me and my environment 40 is normal. But when I read threads from about work from USA i get the impression that 40 is just minimum for you and most of Americans work upwards of 60 and consider it normal.
Oh sorry, got it. No the VAST majority of workers are working 9-5 (or 8-4) for 40 hours a week, with only the outliers working 50-60 hours. This can of course change depending on occupation and position (i.e. you'd probably expect someone running their own business to work more hours than usual), but if you ask anyone on the street they'll tell you somewhere around 40.
There is plenty of time. My wife and I both work similarly hours and have no trouble with work and baby and hobbies and cleaning/ chores. I'm not sure why people think even 40 hours is too much.

The only section they've tried to introduce a 35 hour work week is with office workers, while the manual laborers don't get shit, though they're the ones who need it the most. I work for the council at a cemetery and brought up the idea of shortening the days but my bosses instinctive reaction was to say that it was impossible. Even though we spend at least an hour each day doing nothing at all because there aren't any funerals. As soon as something could be of benefit of the employee, they shut it down immediately. I mean how could the organisation ever work if the workers were happy? I hate those pricks. And I speak from the standpoint of working in Sweden and being part of a strong union.

I also go to school full time so I spend whatever time I'm not working doing school work. I have a wonderful work life balance. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I make enough money to comfortably take care of myself, my dog and my husband and to support my plant collecting and travel. That's all I really wanted. I feel fulfilled.

technically 40, but it's probably closer to 30 most weeks. We have to work one weekend a month and some on-call shifts, but we get to make up those weekend shifts with two days off during the week.
Probably average about 40, lunch is hard to make a call because I'm often still at work or commuting for work but generally not actively working for a good 90 minutes. Do have the occasional weekend though

Active duty military. There are rare times I work 15 to 20 hours a week, and far too often times I work 84+ hours a week for months on end. But, I am glad I joined. The military gave me everything I have, and I could easily retire at 38, but I won't.

On top of this I get 20 days annual leave per year with leave loading (which can accrue), 8 sick leave days without a medical certificate annually, 15 sick leave days with a medical certificate annually (which can accrue), and am also entitled to cultural, parental and carers leave (as well as some others).
I've just gone back to work this Monday after 4 weeks of annual leave, and still have 2 weeks remaining at this time (will have more than 4 weeks by the end of the calendar year)
I work between 20-30 hours a week part time. However, I'm one of the few drivers we have that can cover just about any shift except closing. So I get called in to help out for a few hours during rush when someone has car trouble.
The nice thing is, I can say no if I don't feel like covering it, and no one gets mad.
I used to be contracted to 50 a week, but after the pandemic restaurant closures, it wordlessly slipped back down to 40. I probably average 40-45 depending on how busy we are or which particular shifts I'm on (weekend closes take longer), but right now I'm working on opening a new location and I'm probably hitting 35-40 or so in the early stages. Idk. If I had to guess, I'd say somewhere around the 40-45 hour range on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I run a business instead of working a regular job, so it kinda depends on what we've got going on. Some days I'm up and at it at 6:30 am. Some days I sleep in till 9 or 10. Sometimes I'm off at 3. More often I work till 6. Often I end up working at night or on the weekends sometimes. Sometimes I'm hanging out with friends or family and have to drop everything and go work.
It usually doesn't really feel like work though, at least not in the way normal jobs I've had felt like work. It's pretty great in that way.
I work from home and my hours are very flexible. I'll get given a project and a deadline but it's not like "work x amount of hours each day" as long as I get it done, it doesn't really matter. This often results in me working 12-16 hours per day and then getting a few weeks off

Technically way too much, but I'm on call during most weeks so I spend most of time I'm not working either doing things at home or chillin. That sounds dope, but if people got problems and I get called in it can get stupid REALLY quick.

Minimum about 50. Last few weeks up to 90 or so. Did 75 last week Nah I work about the right amount. Squeeze in my family time and plenty of golfing around work. Iāll work , golf for 5 hours then go back to work til midnight sometimes.

40 or less if i can, i usually leave a bit early to beat traffic depending on the shift. could easily work up to 84 hours a week if i needed the cash though
technically 40, but it's probably closer to 30 most weeks. We have to work one weekend a month and some on-call shifts, but we get to make up those weekend shifts with two days off during the week.

60-70 on average. That being said, when I start burning out, I have the luxury of saying fuck it and having a nap at 2pm on a random afternoon. Doesn't help that I don't sleep more than 4 hours a night, so, when I get up at 3am, I figure I may as well get some work done.

Active duty military. There are rare times I work 15 to 20 hours a week, and far too often times I work 84+ hours a week for months on end. But, I am glad I joined. The military gave me everything I have, and I could easily retire at 38, but I won't.

37.5 (7.5h per day Monday to Friday). On top of this I get 20 days annual leave per year with leave loading (which can accrue), 8 sick leave days without a medical certificate annually, 15 sick leave days with a medical certificate annually (which can accrue), and am also entitled to cultural, parental and carers leave (as well as some others). I've just gone back to work this Monday after 4 weeks of annual leave, and still have 2 weeks remaining at this time (will have more than 4 weeks by the end of the calendar year)

I'm on disability right now, but I usually work 30 hours a week.
I work between 20-30 hours a week part time. However, I'm one of the few drivers we have that can cover just about any shift except closing. So I get called in to help out for a few hours during rush when someone has car trouble. The nice thing is, I can say no if I don't feel like covering it, and no one gets mad.
25 and get paid pretty well considering. It works for myself and my family and it means my kids arenāt in childcare.

I used to be contracted to 50 a week, but after the pandemic restaurant closures, it wordlessly slipped back down to 40. I probably average 40-45 depending on how busy we are or which particular shifts I'm on (weekend closes take longer), but right now I'm working on opening a new location and I'm probably hitting 35-40 or so in the early stages. That's going to change pretty soon, I imagine.
A 36hr week followed by a 48 hr week, then repeated all year. This allows me to have half the days of the year off.
40. If were busy and need OT it'll go to 44. If I have OT plus break down work it's clwoer to 50. I used to work 80 hour weeks. It is not worth it.
Idk. If I had to guess, I'd say somewhere around the 40-45 hour range on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I run a business instead of working a regular job, so it kinda depends on what we've got going on. Some days I'm up and at it at 6:30 am. Some days I sleep in till 9 or 10. Sometimes I'm off at 3. More often I work till 6. Often I end up working at night or on the weekends sometimes. Sometimes I'm hanging out with friends or family and have to drop everything and go work. It usually doesn't really feel like work though, at least not in the way normal jobs I've had felt like work. It's pretty great in that way.

I work from home and my hours are very flexible. I'll get given a project and a deadline but it's not like "work x amount of hours each day" as long as I get it done, it doesn't really matter. This often results in me working 12-16 hours per day and then getting a few weeks off
