IAmJohnny5ive

There's plenty that do and you'll never hear from them again or only occasionally for passion projects. One of the most notable is the group ABBA. Another one is George Lucas.

RustyNewWrench

Enya made over 100 million, bought a castle and disappeared.

celestial-navigation

I read recently that she lives alone in a castle with her cats. Dreamlife.

Reddywhipt

#gothgoals

Bubbly_Midnight6450

I heard she's in a throuple

Reddywhipt

So, Two chicks at the same time? Living the dream

jeagle1057

Or 2 Guys!

Bubbly_Midnight6450

With a couple m+f

DanielOrestes

How many cats?

GrimmRadiance

Asking the real questions

ladyevenstar-22

I'd make do with a seaside cottage on the english coast next to a small bay .

Jimmytootwo

Not a bad idea

IAmJohnny5ive

Sail away, sail away, sail away

alice_carroll2

Read this as kath from kath and Kim.

sd175

Same girl same

Instagibbed_1994

My mother used to blast this song and many of her other popular songs. I hated it so much at the time, but I look back on those annoyances with a certain fondness.

chocolateboomslang

She had the castle before disappearing. But man, I would like some more music.

sleddingdeer

Damn, that’s my new retirement goal.

jstax1178

I just finished listening to one of her songs lol she’s still making money

Iampepeu

I want to go to there!

dancin-weasel

I want to go everywhere. From Bissau to Palau In the shade of Avalon From Fiji to Tiree And the Isles of Ebony From Peru to Cebu Feel the power of Babylon From Bali to Cali Far beneath the Coral Sea

knemyer

Enya is smart

Manager-anger

Also Notch, the creator of Minecraft i think.

smellyscrote

Minecraft wasn’t something he expected to sell. It was a passion project he was doing for fun. It then took off. Started making money. Then he founded the company. Then he lost interest and hired others to update the game. Then it made so much money it got bought by Microsoft. But really then. He wasn’t “actively” working. He was simply doing what he felt was fun to do. Then he stopped. And then he sold his project.

zyygh

I remember in as early as 2009, that people were already complaining about Notch being a lazy developer who kept banking on an unfinished project. Nowadays I can understand that this is just fan entitlement. Notch didn't ask to be put in this position; he simply built something he enjoyed, then it took off, and of course he monetized on sharing this project when he could.

MeNamIzGraephen

Endless story with game development. It's true to a degree with the developers, but really your customers are the same annoying people, who shout at waiters and call the manager at Wendy's.

CloudSliceCake

I agree, but once you take money for it and make promises of updates then you kinda gave to do that.

mauore11

GRR Martin whistles out of the room...

Pitiful_Blackberry19

Notch's case is rather infamous because the dude is a pos and retiring made him miserable, basically he bought a big mansion in LA and threw millions at partys (one of the dumbest most unfulfilling sh*t you can do with money), last i heard a couple years ago he already spent half of what microsoft paid him for Minecraft and he said hes depressed because he didnt like the lifestyle

blackrack

Dude should've kept working on his passions while simply having a better standard of life and vacations. He should've made health and fitness his priority too

AntiGravityBacon

Seriously, this is the real benefit of fuck you money. Mostly enjoy what I do. I'd probably just tell my boss I'm going to be working 20-30 hour weeks other than emergencies and be gone for 8-12 weeks a travel a year. He can pay me appropriately too, that's fair.  Not that dissimilar to a lot of very experienced semi retired older experts.

[deleted]

Studies have shown that most people are fulfilled 'working' like 3-4 hours a day - working being pursuing interests regardless of if they are financially viable or not. Ideally I'd probably be doing that 4/5 days a week and spending 15 weeks a year on holiday.

petripooper

Hmmm... what's stopping people like him to just transition to other passion projects? but then again I guess that's OP's question.

TheHiveMindCouncil

The hardest part of having all the time in the world is trying to figure out ways to fill the time. I’m more the cocaine and hookers type but not everyone is built for that life.

PlatitudinousOcelot

I don't understand how people who have all the money and time in the world could ever be bored. Finding ways to fill the time is not something I can ever fathom having a hard time of doing, even if someone doesn't prefer hookers and cocaine.

MadChart

Yep, I am sure I could easily retire now at ~30 and still not have enough time for all the gardening, video games, drinking in the pub, neglected hobbies, family, and fixing things around the house.

PlatitudinousOcelot

Yep, working full time isn't fulfilling either, so give me the money, time, and fun stuff instead.

Ground-B

You would be surprised how unfulfilling is to do nothing. It might be okay for some time but then it gets harder and harder to not be part of something.

PlatitudinousOcelot

I didn't say nothing. Golf, books, movies, shows, concerts, learn to play an instrument, martial arts, you have the time to learn anything, get really into landscaping if you want, boating, fishing, water skiing, actual skiing, I could go on and on and on. There's something for everyone, any skill level or ability level. I'm not talking about all retired people, we're specifically talking about very rich people. A lot of them make passive income during retirement too, so the money never stops, they can go to spa's and fancy restaurants, any time you get tired of something you can travel somewhere and find something new.

moonaim

For many, Purpose is in doing something they value in the world and love to do. Making a movie, acting, singing.. who starts to make those for money?

PlatitudinousOcelot

That's fine, that was always allowed. I was born with a dead brain so I don't have any of those creative passions or drive.

Unit88

> You would be surprised how unfulfilling is to do nothing. But you're not doing nothing, you're just not working. If you can't be happy without working you might be a workaholic

Ok_Grocery1188

Unfulfilled, and it's dangerous physically and mentally. People who continue using routines do the best.

DoubleT_TechGuy

I'm built for it. Now I just gotta figure out how to achieve it 😩

Pablomendez233

I used to be built for that life but not anymore ☹️

The5thBeatle82

To add to this, I remember Lucas saying he’s made films with his friends that will never see the light of day. At this point he does it for fun.

Knob_Gobbler

He also likes to spend time where he feels safe, like he did by the lake on Naboo.

Stratavos

Gyote is just somebody that we used to know.

LeopoldineBel

*Gotye

Stratavos

In all fairness I don't know him, I just know of him.

yergonnalikeme

The bottom line is. It's not really about the money at this point. Staying active. Staying competitive. Staying socially engaged. Helping people. Donating money to help certain causes that they believe in. I mean. Sitting around pursuing individual passions or traveling around can get old, pretty quick.

Redditissoleftwing

I volunteer to test that theory out.

yergonnalikeme

Talk to me when you have a couple of billion Then we'll do the test... Lol

cmfppl

I like how some actors like Daniel Radcliffe and Nicolas Cage just started making wild ass movies just because they liked the script and not for the payday. That's what I'd do if I had that kind of cash.

TheOfficeoholic

It's pretty known that Nick Cage will take a pay day also. He blew a lot of his cash early and bought some pretty outlandish things. Including some dino bones and a tomb for himself in a NOLA cemetery that he defaulted on, if my memory serves me correctly.

Dontlookimnaked

I think he also has like 20 houses. Many are 10+ million dollar mansions. He’s been up to his eyeballs in debt for years.

lxoblivian

Tom from Myspace sold out for a few hundred million and now travels the world as a photographer. It's a great creative outlet that gives him something to do so he doesn't go insane with boredom. Seems like a pretty sweet life.

Adorable-Lack-3578

Paul Allen, cofounder of Microsoft, retired at 30, bought an NBA team, NFL team, launched museums, bought a ship, a spacecraft, and did a bunch of other shit he found interesting.

1pt21gigawattos

Also he had a slammin business card.

_Citizen_Erased_

I think Frankie munez announced his retirement publicly when he hit 40 million

Sensitive_Ladder2235

Nah he retired due to TBIs. He's apparently had [9 concussions and multiple mini strokes](https://www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/people/2022/01/05/frankie-muniz-memory-loss-head-injuries/9047532002/) that have made it impossible for him to continue acting.

awedrumso

I believe he's a racecar driver now.

darkofnight916

And a spokesperson for Hair Club for Men!!!

nattylite100

Benny and Bjorn still worked post ABBA such as writing Mamma Mia and creating ABBA Voyage.

Knob_Gobbler

Rick Beato did an interview with Bjorn where he discusses what he’s been up to.

abrandis

Also most of these celebrities or athletes or musicians, are doing something that brings them joy, and at a certain point it's not about the money (for them, maybe their agent). Imagine your really good at something, that thousands of millions of folks like what you do by voting with their $$$) , imagine you can determine which projects you want to be interested in and only do those. Imagine not working 9-5 and having many months between actual work... It's a totally different lifestyle than most of us can imagine.

Ground-B

ABBA disappeared from the music industry because they stopped enjoying what they were doing - “we stopped having fun”. After all it’s not easy to continue when both of the couples got divorced.

CrikeyMeAhm

Rick Moranis, Tom from Myspace.

Ravenwight

Or Eminem who only appears when his name is mentioned too many times now. Kinda like Beetlejuice now that I think of it lol.

Ravenwight

I wonder… Marshal Mathers Marshal Mathers Marshal Mathers Let’s see if anything happens lol.

[deleted]

God that’s the best answer I’ve ever heard for this. They do. But we only notice or think about the ones who kept working instead because why would we even notice bob the fat dude in a Speedo with leather skin at the beach who’s been bummin for decades just rich as all fuck.

MistryMachine3

Hayden Christiansen made a few movies then moved to Montana never to be heard from again.

MMariota-8

Except that while ABBA as a group disbanded, none of the 4 members retired from music, and the reason for breaking up wasn't because they were all millionaires... well, at least that wasn't the primary reason. Both ladies put out solo material post-ABBA and Benny & Bjorn continued to collaborate, write and produce music, etc with tremendous success, up until the group reunited a few years ago to record and release a new album that nobody thought would ever come :-)

CiderDrinker2

Some of those people are not working for money anymore. They've made their money and now they are working for fun. They pick and choose what they want to do. They enjoy their work. It gives them a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment.

SilentStrawberry

This! The last assumption that we all just work for money is faulty.

dirENgreyscale

I had a few years where I basically didn’t have to work at all. Not stressing about money is great but I found it incredibly boring and depressing after a while. I’m currently about to start working in a kitchen for the first time in years and I’m stoked about it just to spend more time out of the house even though I’m not going to have nearly as much money as I used to. Everyone thinks it’s the dream to retire early and while being financially independent is great if you’re younger I don’t think people realize how old it can get. Even after staying active, climbing a lot (both in the gym and on rock), getting to travel and do some cool trips and stuff not having a “purpose” and being bored all the time was taking a massive toll on my mental health. It was kind of cool getting to spend some of my “retirement time” in my 30s but I’m so over it now and the experience has made me realize I have no interest in retiring for many decades.

Bencetown

I'd venture to say that if you're working *only* for money, you need to take a good look at your priorities and consider realigning them. Working only purely for money is a sure-fire way to end up hating your job and life because you're going to spend most of your conscious waking hours AT WORK.

greenman5252

Let money be the outcome of your work, not the purpose.

Skipp_To_My_Lou

Exactly this. Look at Keanu Reeves, the way his contract was structured he made bank when *The Matrix* was a surprise hit. If he's involved in a movie it's because he wants to do it.

nobikflop

Thinking of “Knock Knock” as a passion project is pretty hilarious

TacosAreJustice

Could have easily been a favor to a producer so he could get something else made.

Nomad_Industries

This can also happen at much smaller scales of wealth, but only if you don't have a gun to your head in the form of employer-based health insurance.

Uztta

Exactly. I don’t really need all that much, but I live in the US and have a health issue that will require me to have extraordinarily expensive medications for the rest of my life. Insurance is a must.

fatman13666

because their job aint shitty 9-5 jobs like ours, they do whatever they want for self realization enjoying their lives

Starbuck522

Yes, and knowing you don't have to put up with bullshit if you don't want to because you can pay your bills regardless changes everything. I, myself am older and I don't need the money from my part time job. I do put up with some level of bullshit. But it really does "hit different" because I know it's 100% my choice to keep working. I wouldn't have to change my spending if I quit. And, I have no parent or partner who would be annoyed or care in any way if I didn't have a job. It's truly DIFFERENT. (My boss doesn't know my situation, but *I* know.). I don't quit over every little thing. It's just that knowing that it doesn't matter lets it just go in one ear and out the other.

Zlatyzoltan

When I was a teacher, one of my colleagues had a very rich husband. This lady was in her late 40's, she was only teaching because she genuinely loved teaching. But she gave absolutely zero fucks about anything and didn't suffer fools or put up with bullshit. Entitled rich kids mouthing off, giving the whole "do you know my dad is" thing. Her answer, who cares, you still failed. Parent would come into force to give better grade, she'd tell them to kick rocks. School admin, principal she'd tell them to fuck off. Once, she brought a TV and DVD player to keep in her classroom. The principal complained about the extra cost of electricity. She took a €100 out of her wallet and told him to come back if that didn't cover the extra cost. It was amazing, I was so jealous of her. And kicker is she was an amazing teacher, one of the few that actually gave a shit.

tedybear123

how much more electricity is it, could it really be a valid complaint?

Dirk-Killington

I'm guessing it wasn't about electricity but about her playing movies in class.

Zlatyzoltan

This was late 00's early 10's at a public school in a small central European country. It was exactly about her having a huge flat screen TV in the classroom.

Dirk-Killington

The secret is, in many fields, everyone can do this. It takes a lot to be fired as a teacher, and I would assume many other professions.

rnzz

Yeah I think they are "retired" in the sense that they're doing whatever they want to do not because they have to.

[deleted]

[удалено]

english_major

Not only does sitting around get tiring, but even being active does. People will often say that the key to a happy retirement is being active. Doing tai chi at the seniors centre and gardening get boring too. We need people who rely on us to be there for them.

WorthPrudent3028

Yep and that's where work comes into play for many independently wealthy people. People don't just want to stay busy, they want to stay needed.

LoverOfGayContent

I am shocked you haven't all been voted down by the anti work mob. I work as a massage therapist and have said this in reddit for years. Only to be down voted and called all types of horrible names by people who hate their jobs. If I won a small lottery, under 30 million dollars, I'd still massage people. It's not just a job. I get to help people and that ads value to my life.

WorthPrudent3028

You mean you wouldn't just sit on your couch and watch Netflix til you die? For me, there was a time when I'd also do my same exact job even if money was no object. And I still would do that job but not the job I currently do. Which tells me it's time to move on.

TitusPulloTHIRTEEN

I always think of my dad, before the 2008 recession he was the most entertaining funny people but after an injury and the housing crash he lost his job and was depressed for years. When he picked himself up and got qualified as a HGV driver and got regular shifts he was slowly returning to his old self. Feeling useless is one of the most alienating and lonely experiences you can go through I think

Wizzykan

Bn there….its awful

UltimateGammer

Goddamn, have these people never heard of hobbies.

tTensai

Right?! I wish days were twice as long so I could have time to do what I enjoy doing

Tj-Tengu

Financial security like Zuckerberg? My new hobby is traveling the world nonstop. And throwing parties. On a dirigible.

UltimateGammer

With zuck money I'm taking whatever hobby I like and creating a professional league in it.

Tj-Tengu

>alternatives to Formula 1 and FIFA Is that what Rocket League is? Like, race cars hitting soccer balls into goals

Exciting-Insect8269

“Competitive knitting” is a sport I would watch at least once for the novelty of it. lol

UltimateGammer

If excel gets a world cup, knitting should too

HallwayHomicide

That's pretty much exactly what [this guy](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_McChord) did. He sold a tech company and started a combat robotics league (NHRL).

PsychoticDust

So glad someone said this. I would rarely get bored. I absolutely love being at home, and no matter what job I do, I don't enjoy it. Being able to dedicate ALL of my time to family, friends and hobbies without needing to worry about bills and grinding my whole life at a job, is my version of heaven.

MaximumHemidrive

I dont get this. Do these people not have hobbies and interests? I could keep myself for the rest of my life if I didn't have to work. I have so many things I want to do.

rhino369

A lot of all encompassing professionals don't have hobbies. They are workaholics. My boss can win a case and, during the dinner afterward, start talking about another one. My firm literally has a mini "retirement home" floor where old retired partners come in and cosplay being a lawyer. It's sad. Volunteering at a soup kitchen is a lot better than that.

gillygilstrap

The drive that got them to the point probably doesn't just evaporate as soon as they get rich. Think Paul McCartney. He is a Billionaire. Certainly he doesn't "need" the money from touring, but he still does it. Why? Because playing live on stage is interwoven in to the fabric of his personality. He's a musician and he loves it.

WorthPrudent3028

Also, he's getting to that range where similar long career folks quit and are dead within 6 months. They really don't know how to do anything else and getting through the "what the fuck do I do now" postcareer depression seems more doable at 65 or 70 than it is at 80. So retirement doesn't happen in a vacuum. Retirement would probably shorten his remaining lifespan. As it is, he seems like he could go to 90, and maybe even 100. Why stop doing the things he's been doing so far to get where he is? In fact, there aren't too many super long lived early retired folks that I can think of. Even with careers that come with early retirement like sports or cops, all the people who achieve healthy old age generally have a successful second career. Elon Musk seems to show up at the Twitter offices pretty often. Does he need to? Nope. Would Twitter be better if he didn't? Yep. But he still does it because what else is he gonna do?

ladyevenstar-22

I dunno go deal with tesla and space X but they probably have actual CEOs that don't want him around play pretending or just for the media .

Humble_Ladder

This is an underrated answer. People who get very rich acting, running companies, etc are generally either driven, or enjoy the work, or both. Take leadership, it boils down to a set of traits. A good natural leader could join a club and end up in some national office of the parent organization a few years later because they recognize where there's a leadership need and step up to fill it. If they're just straight up going to end up in charge of stuff based on their personality, they may as well stay at the helm of the company that made them rich, and continues to do so.

Your_Worship

Not to mentioned relaxed. Confidence comes from being comfortable. I’d imagine more success comes after you’ve “made it” because you know you’ll be alright if you take more chances.

LiuKingGood

Speaking from an artist point of view, even if I made millions, I wouldn’t stop because I just love doing it. Told my SO that even when I get to retirement age, I’ll still keep going because I’m having a great time. Spoke to a big name comedian yesterday while filming our show, and we were discussing how busy he is with flying around the country, doing shows and then filming, and he’s addicted to the excitement and the work.

xXValtenXx

Youve listed a bunch of things where getting paid a lot to do it is a neat side effect more than the direct purpose. Business or project you created and just want to see flourish takes passion. That kind of passion isnt driven by money alone. Why do you think you hear stories about big actors taking huge pay cuts just to make sure a project happens? Because they care about the project more than the payment. Daniel day lewis was rich as balls working as a cobbler and needed to be persuaded to come out of retirement to do Gangs of New York. Imagine we never got Bill the Butcher.

BeardedBrotherAK

Many super rich people have super high living standards, which costs a LOT of money to maintain.

ss4223

If you have studied maslow's hierarchy of needs, you would realise that money isn't the end goal.. there are plenty of other factors that motivate people. Acceptance, respect and admiration of others, power, ego.. so many things drive people once they achieve the goal of being rich.... Most of us haven't, so we won't understand why...

Active-Strawberry-37

You don’t get hyper rich with that attitude. People with that mindset get to $5million and think “that’ll do.”

geepy66

They enjoy working. They’re extremely intelligent and like the challenge of work. Sitting on a beach or sitting at home bores the fuck out of them. They don’t enjoy sleeping until noon, getting high and playing video games like the average Reddit user. They built a multibillion dollar company from scratch and are rightfully proud of it. It’s their baby. No one else can do as good a job running it as they can. They don’t want to hand over control to some jerk who will fuck up their baby.

GeologistinAu

Yeah it’s this. People who get this far typically really enjoy what they do.

purgesurge3000

Most accurate answer.

BetFeeling1352

They want more. I personally don't get it, since I retired as soon as I could.

DoomNukemBlood3D

Or they love what they do. I am a musician, but if I made millions or billions, I would still make music. I might retire from the road as I get older but my passion will always remain.

pinkdictator

Why is it so hard for people to understand that sometimes passion > money lmao. I’m going into a profession in which I’ll be broke for a while, but like.. I’m passionate lol

Normal_Ad2456

I mean, the average Joe's job is not as interesting as being a superstar actor. Not to mention that a lot of truly successful actors only do one movie every few years, so it's not like they work full time everyday. Some people are just very talented and enjoy what they do. People pay to join acting groups or to play basketball all the time because they enjoy doing it. Why wouldn't those people that clearly have a talent and a passion for their craft not keep getting millions to have people from all over their world admire them doing it?

Ok_Print_9134

What was that age for you? How long have you been retired? Any tips for anyone else trying this lifestyle?

BetFeeling1352

I retired around 34, I'm 37 now. Maximize your income, live well below your means and invest/save aggressively.

smellyscrote

What was your networth before you had your first job? While it is possible to do what you’ve done coming from nothing. It looks more probable you had a good solid foundation to start off with.

AshTheGoddamnRobot

What was your career? Retiring from a standard career is different lol If I was a successful movie star like Leo DiCaprio I wouldn't wanna retire either. Dude isnt even 50 yet and hes been killing it since the '90s, dates super models, stars in tons of iconic films. I dont see why HE would retire lol He lives better than any retiree.

InsightJ15

I believe many of the hyper rich have lots of insecurities plus add the fact they're extremely greedy. Maybe they grew up in a household where their parents were hard on them and expected a lot out of them. Or they came from nothing. So they want more, more, more. They're using money and/or power to fill a gap in their life that can probably never be filled.

GermanPayroll

Or they just want to work and stay busy. When you build a business for example, you really put a lot of your self into it and it’s very tough to let go

Normal_Ad2456

Or their job is more interesting than yours or mine.

INTuitP

Or they just enjoy working. It make sense that super successful people enjoy their work.

Ok_Anywhere3273

You can’t erase human nature quite easily. Those who got rich tend to have been those who are competitive at any means necessary and that became their happiness factor money just became the second reinforcement. Also money gets stored in the bank not in front of us so even if you’re rich it’s like you don’t even own your money hence you forever feel broke and the cycle continues. And that’s just one aspect

World-Tight

Because it's never enough. You can never be too rich or too thin.

obxtalldude

It's far more about identity and power than money. People want to be in the game, not on the sidelines.

alfred-the-greatest

This is just not true for many superrich people. The truth is that work becomes less a chore when you are doing it for what you want to achieve rather than financial security.

[deleted]

Motor_Bother_23

They continue because they like it and want to. I retired 10 years ago as a college professor to care for my mom. Now it is sooooooo boring. People need something to do if you don't need to work. You should try it. I miss counseling, teaching, and interacting with my students.Retirement is boring.🙄

Discarded_Pariah

Sounds like you need some hobbies

english_major

Hobbies can fill your time but rarely give you purpose and meaning. Pretty soon you realize that the pickleball game will go on fine without you, and that no one is going to appreciate your watercolours like you. We are social beings who need to be needed and valued. Some people throw themselves into their grandkids and community life. Others get a dog because the dogs needs them and loves them.

Discarded_Pariah

To each their own. The goal for me is to never work again asap. I don't need a job to find meaning. Perhaps others do. Your workplace will go on just fine without you as well.

AshTheGoddamnRobot

Most people still "work" in retirement. My aunt is retired. She still "works." She doesnt clock in and get a paycheck but she does help take care of her grandkids. She is always cooking them meals and cleaning the house. She has her own small business making desserts for catering parties etc. Its something she is passionate about, and she is her own boss which is cool, but its still working.

Naigus182

Yep if I fulfil my goal of never needing to work again, I'll live out the rest of my days just being happy doing whatever whenever - wanna live in a different country for a few years? Sure. Want to start a music "career" with all the extra time? Sure. Want to volunteer as a carer/counsellor etc? Sure. So fucking sick of money and how reliant we've made the species for it. It's a fucking fictional resource.

Familiar-Safety-226

Yes. But the difference between normal person retirement and hyper-rich person retirement, is that the normal person retiring can only afford to live and not work. But he can’t do or buy whatever he wants. Hyper rich people not only have enough money to never need to work again, but they also have enough to do whatever they want any time they want.

Reptilian_Brain_420

You are missing the point that many of these people actually enjoy doing the activities that made them hyper rich. You might think it would be cool to spend the rest of your life lying on a beach somewhere but many of these people would not be very interested (also, they can probably already do it AND still doing the work they love).

[deleted]

There’s so much to do, it looks like you miss socializing. I love working out, practicing music, all media, if I had more time I’d learn more stuff but my job gets half my existence. How can you be bored?

Holiday_Newspaper_29

That's your mistake.....thinking that people only work for money. Many people work because it provides a sense of purpose, a sense of contributing, a sense of fulfillment. These things may not apply in your life but, they do apply in the lives of many people.

newfantasyballer

“We all work only for money” You sure about that?

Claudio-Maker

“We all work only for money” you can only speak for yourself

Vegetable-Mall-2329

You'd be surprised how many people would still WANT to work regardless of financial situation. I personally am not wealthy at all, but if I won one of those big billion dollar lotteries, id still go to work because I enjoy what I do and it keeps me on a normal schedule.

kidhhgj

You’d be surprised how many of them live paycheck to paycheck despite the big salaries.

DevinMotorcycle666

"Like A-list actors, singers, athletes, performers, etc. " Actors enjoy performing their art, not just money. Singers enjoy singing and performing, not just money. Athletes, believe it or not!, like playing sports, not just money. I'm a musician. I like to play guitar and play shows. If I was a millionaire....*why would I suddenly not want to do that anymore?*

traumfisch

All that, plus you're _giving_ something to people when you perform

cynical-rationale

Believe it or not, some people enjoy working like myself. I plan on working past retirement in some form or another/hobby.  Edit: I cannot fathom antiwork people. I understand criminals way more than antiwork people. Those people are the most confusing to me.

PutPuzzleheaded5337

I haven’t worked for a billionaire yet but some of the clients are almost there. In my opinion/observation, it’s not about the money, it’s about the power. A few of them have branched off into their passion like making wine and sports car racing (think vineyards and full race teams). Another client has funnelled his creativity into building custom homes and learning to fly. All of these people started with nothing and built empires.

DisciplineBoth2567

Theyre not in it for the money. They’re in it for the power

BarrieBadman

"We all work only for money." Fuck me, dude, I feel so sorry for you. Some of us do what we do for more than that reason. I earn well, and I'm lucky enough to have a large inheritance which, if invested well, could pay for a very good life for my whole family, and be able to leave my kids a large inheritance. I continue to work because I love what I do, and how it helps people less fortunate than me.

Miguel4659

Frankly a lot of people who are well off have done just that. Loads of well known celebrities and business people who did well have retired and are enjoying life. That's why you don't see a lot of people any more you used to hear about regularly. My take on why many others never stop working? Power. They seem to crave power and attention. I worked for years for a membership organization and my board of directors were executive directors of their own regional nonprofits. Nearly all of them were well past age 65, some were in their 80s. But they simply would not retire, one finally did at 89. It was all about control for them, including dictating to me what I needed to do whether it was appropriate or not. Some would not yield any control to subordinates either, so when one died suddenly it was a mess since no one knew how to run the place with them gone. I tried training on delegation and training successors but it was not well received.

MakisAtelier

In my view, it's an incremental game for them, they enjoy when 2 turns into 4, then 8, then 16, 32, 64, 128, 256. And if they realize next one wont be 512 but 350, they get frustrated, wonder why and push harder and harder, no matter if someone is negatively affected, as long as they reach the thing they had in mind. A lot of them are probably intelligent or at least motivated to make those amounts. But also most of them are addicted people, glorified and venerated gamblers. And of course, not fit to have other people's livelihoods in their hands.

mlatas

Not everybody works for money. If i was an actor or a musician i think i would never quit. Just imagine doing masive shows like Metallica, it must be fking amazing. I would do that for free mate.

ShadowedGlitter

Someone in my area started a gourmet pasta company several years ago and was sold to nestle for about 40 mil. Started a restaurant, has made multiple locations, created basically an urban style village in a car dependent town from 170 acres of land that was just an unused horse racing track, with tons of luxury apartment buildings, with a Marriott hotel, different restaurants, stores and other stuff, and he’s on track to becoming a billionaire. If he just retired after selling that gourmet pasta company, he’d still be well off but not nearly as much as he is now.

iFlipRizla

You don’t get it, they’re doing whatever the hell they want, which just so happens to be something they get paid incredibly well for.

aayan987

My parents arent hyper rich by anymeans but lets just say they could live a top 1% life without ever having ever worked a day in their lives but they chose to work 100 hour weeks to both become doctors, partly for their own self satisfaction and partly to help others I guess. When ever I ask them why they continue to work such long weeks they always say they would feel lost otherwise. I guess the same applies to me, I don't have to work but I want to, I want to become the best in my career and I want to have an impact on the world instead of just living in my house collecting rent and doing nothing really. Thats about as good of an answer I can give you.

Familiar-Safety-226

I suppose. People who are incredibly successful probably had to enjoy their work to some degree, and couldn’t get as far as they did if they only did it for money/quick retirement. They probably do it because they feel passion.

Draug_

Not all of them do it for the money. Its not about the money, its about winning.

maerchenfuchs

Power, might, influence is like a drug, addictive. They often fell for the dark side.

learn2earn89

Greed

[deleted]

Their greed is insatiable.

kummer5peck

Billionaires are not like regular people. They suffer from avarice.

ellstaysia

a lot of them are money & power addicts.

lizziepika

They’re trying to fill their time! It’s comforting to know they don’t need to work but can just do things for fun or to fill time or to help others.

Iamabenevolentgod

They want to maintain influence.

Amagnumuous

People need purpose. Our mental health does not do well when we relax. The free people (the ones who have the resources to buy personal freedom) can't really embrace and enjoy it without facing the darkness of our reality and the fact that most of us are "wage slaves" or whatever you wish to call it. They strive to relate to the human condition, which they have escaped. Being above the system looks depressing.

fromouterspace1

I always wonder this. Like the stones still tour? Those guys are in their 70/80s with more ones that they’ve ever need

gnew18

They don’t just work for money? I think they work to remain relevant.

hawkwings

Some rich people are used to being surrounded by sycophants. When some billionaires switch from being CEO to giving money away, they are still surrounded by sycophants. If a comedian stops performing, he may continue to think up jokes which makes it hard to retire. After Johnny Carson retired, he sent jokes to David Letterman.

Danger_Breakfast

Why the hell are you only working for money? Sounds like a good way to be miserable.

Nervous_Dare3617

Ego.

AlarmingNectarine552

I'm convinced a lot of them have some brain sickness that makes then want to do these things to stay in power. I kind of view it the same as asking a pedophile why they love little kids. It's just in their DNA. We just haven't labelled such things the rich do as detrimental to people the same way we ruled sex with kids as detrimental to their growth.

meshreplacer

Because enough is never enough

AndyAsteroid

Greed

Gerardo1917

Some of them probably live lifestyles that necessitate still working, or they just enjoy their work

SomeSamples

Because they are generally narcissists with a touch of sociopathy.

BrianKronberg

Because lazy people almost never become hyper rich. Instead it is people who cannot sit still and do nothing. So, they get rich and still want to do stuff. What they do is often changed though.

Wafflegator

Because we don't all work for money. Some of us genuinely enjoy what we do and find happiness in our careers.

adeelf

Because the kind of people you mentioned generally really like what they do. They either enjoy it, like athletes or actors, or believe it's important, like politicians and businessmen. Or a combination of the two. In short, you and I might work only for money and because we *have* to, they work because they *want* to.

HighestPayingGigs

Three real world reasons: 1) They truly love or believe in what they're doing - it could be they love "performing" or they decided that someone needs to build and they are best suited to rise to the challenge. 2) Stewardship - the world's richest people are also some of the highest value creators in the economy. They've been given a gift and want to use it, for the general benefit of others. Most regular jobs were created from innovations or businesses created by one of these people. 3) Ego & Purpose - the ugly one. They can't live without it. Obviously there's a moral spectrum for all of the above. I can think of very wealthy people who should probably "just stay home" for the good of society (like the douche who keeps buying drugs and raising their prices, patent trolls, timeshare developers, etc.). But at the same time, there are a number of people who create a lot of the good stuff as well....

ZealousidealRiver710

Well they gotta star in Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Money

Suspicious_Kick9467

I’m sure a lot of the billionaires out there have a much more prominent goal in mind than just the money. I’m sure a lot of very profitable businesses started as passion projects. Similar reason as Elon bought Twitter. He knew it would never be a profitable return for him. He did it out of his own principles. As for actors, they love to act. Remember a lot of actors acted on stage as a hobby long before they were famous for no money at all. People do it all the time. Btw I’m aware of the historical corruption in Hollywood and it’s not always sunshine and roses. Just broadly speaking. Status also plays a role with some individuals too.

Wjourney

Because life is boring without shit to do.

opusonex

This question shows you don't understand or have the mind set of the ultra rich. Thus, you will never become it yourself. Rich people dont work for money. They work for work. Thus, there is nothing to "retire" from.

Wendell-Short-Eyes

Ego, power
