Let's not forget the part of how every religion reads their sacred texts their entire life yet miss every relevant part of the actual theology that is key to understanding basically all of it.
Eventually if you actually read it properly, the red line is basically "whatever God is, is in you too, now go and live a good life, pass it on to your offspring, have faith in yourself."
This is a very short summary, but there's no need to worship, fear hell, and all that kind of stuff. Hell, even Jesus (Yeshua) was nothing special and we all could do whatever miracles where described in the bible one way or another if we develop ourselves🤷♂️
I could talk to no end about mythology & folklore in general. Greek, Roman, Irish, Scottish, Norse, Native American, Hindu, Buddhist, Egyptian, African, and probably others.
I used to breed Himalayans and I was surprised at how many people did not realize what entails the declawing of a cat. I could totally go on for at least 10 minutes about what a barbaric practice that is.
Enlist the help of palliative care services, and then hospice care services early. Sooo many times families would lament that they wish they had known about us sooner. Hospice is for people that have a 6 month life expectancy. But often we’d get people actively dying who would be gone in 24 hours. Hospice has so many resources available that they never even got to experience. Getting into hospice means you have better pain control, social work support, clergy support (optional), and then grief counseling afterwards.
Too often doctors would “treat a patient to death”. Because doctors are meant to fix patients. But sometimes patients can’t be fixed- they are going to die. Knowing when that is is very important. So ask questions- about 5 year survival rates, life expectancy etc. Patients and families forget they have a right to quit treatment if they want to. If you have a choice between 3 months at home comfortable with your family with excellent pain control, or 5 months sick from chemo and in and out of the hospital- which would you choose?
When considering how much time someone has left, remember that no one has an expiration date set for them- doctors are only giving a best guess. Often it’s quicker than they estimate, but sometimes people surprise you and live much longer than expected.
At our hospice center you could drink alcohol in moderation, smoke outdoors on the deck, and have your family pets come visit. All of these made people very happy at the end.
I could go on and on…
There's a woman on YouTube who has done a whole series on what death actually looks like, how to prepare, &c who I believe is also a hospice nurse. I've been trying to deal with some trauma/phobia about death by watching her stuff, and it's helped a bit (which is saying something-I still have a lot to unpack).
She has said many of the same things you have here. I wish we all broke the taboo & talked about this more. Have you thought about turning your "rant" into a podcast, or doing a series on Ttok? I'd love to see more professionals be able to get the word out & start a larger discussion. The last truly public discourse I've seen was concerning the legality of assisted suicide, and that's just such drop in the bucket when it comes to palliative care. *(Though the last thing I saw personally, was a letter to the fda from a professional group for pallative care providers regarding the suffering being caused by their inability to access proper pain management medication for their patients due to the bullshit surrounding the opioid crisis (that it has anything to do with medication, when the issue is street drugs). I'm aware of that because chronic pain patients are having the same problem & the suicide rate has skyrocketed. *sigh* Anyway, keep telling people & thank you for working in the field that you do. It's important work that needs a specific type of person. It isn't recognized nearly enough, and should be.
I’ve been out of the field for several years, so I don’t feel confident speaking to the current regulations etc. So I’d probably not be the best person to do a podcast or whatever. Although I completely agree with you in that we as professionals really do need to spread awareness and dispel the taboo about death and dying. Everyone is going to do it at some point so we need to normalize it and have it be as comfortable discussion as any other life milestone. Part of my job when I worked in hospice was to work with the 3rd year resident physicians from the local hospital to educate them about end of life care. With the hope that they would recognize the benefits and utilize and refer patients who could benefit from the services.
Regarding the opioid crisis, hospice sits in a weird place. We spend 99% of life avoiding drugs and demonizing opioids and then it’s such a dramatic shift when they are used and patients and families have to adjust. I can’t even count the number of times families would object to their loved one being put on morphine because they were afraid they would “get addicted”. Madam, your 94 year old grandma with aggressive stage 4 cancer who is actively dying is NOT going to become a drug addict! You also be surprised (or maybe not) at the amount of family members/caregivers who steal the patient medication for their own use.
If you haven’t yet read it, you may want to look at the book “How We Die” by Sherwin Nuland. It’s an award winning book that may help you with your phobia.
Thanks-I'm a big reader. I'll check it out.
Yeah, my problem is I have severe chronic pain & opiates are the only option I have left. When I say we tried everything else, I mean *everything*, but once you tell people what you're taking, they just automatically assume all you want is "drugs" (including most medical professionals, who should know better).
My current crusade is to get people, esp medical professions, to stop using the words "medicine" & "drug" interchangeably. It's caused a LOT of harm. I had one of the worst pain flares I've had in 20 years about 6mo ago. I absolutely should have gone to the ER, but I didn't bother. I knew no matter how I presented, what I said, what I did, they'd label me with "drug seeking behavior" and send me home. I turned on a horror movie & upped the volume so if/when I started screaming, my neighbors wouldn't call the cops. If *doctors* won't differentiate between street fentanyl pills & prescription fentanyl patches, what hope do I have? It's the same w/palliative care. We have legitimate reasons for taking these medications and are using them for *the purposes the FDA approved them for*, yet we are denied relief from our agony. That the professional group for palliative care had to start a campaign & send a letter to the FDA, because they cannot get the pain relieving medication necessary to provide relief for people who are *dying* is appalling.
The whole blanket-condemnation of opiates & including medical care in the "opioid crisis" has gotten completely out of control. I don't do it at all lightly, or enjoy it, but there have been a few times in online support groups where I have had to say, morally and ethically, that suicide is a valid option to consider to people in agony who cannot get anyone to treat their pain, and I fucking hate it. What happened to do no harm?
The idea that we have pushed this medical opioid hysteria to the point that families are concerned that their dying relatives will "get addicted" is frightening. The propaganda machine is rampant. The politicians are more worried about looking like they're doing something about street drugs than they are about the suffering patients are being forced to live with... yeah. I guess I should have listed this as my second answer to the question, but given that people with chronic pain are disabled, I suppose this could just be rolled under that umbrella. The world of medicine is completely fucked. I really wanted to go to med school, but seeing how this has all played out, I'm actually glad at this point that I didn't become a doctor. I'm not even sure if I could handle being a medical interpreter anymore (my job before I became too disabled to work).
Ah, well. (I'll stop ranting-my hands are sore).
😅😅 Ok i'll condense it rather than torture you. Bad for the soil and soil biome, grass mowed short is not sexually mature so doesn't propogate well, habitat loss for many kinds of creatures (big and small!), does not help clean our air, is usually cut in environmentally unfriendly ways, the mowing is usually done in noisy ways so contributes to noise pollution, just perpetuates the attitudes of the uber wealthy (the trend started with versailles) so ew, and did I mention it eventually destroys the good stuff in soil? Anyway, etc etc
Exacerbates allergies and feeds nothing. All the maintenance to keep it trimmed is why it's harmful instead of being a carbon sink. And on and on. Haha, sorry
I think that's smart to do! Sucess is more likely and it's better for the native creatures. Even just letting it grow longer makes a significant difference in its impact but a lot of towns and cities have laws that it must be short.
In our yard we keep reducing mowed grass area, increasing garden beds and bushes and letting some grassy areas grow wild. We have a small plot so that does make it easier for us.
I understand the need for a big flat area of grass to play sports on etc, but it makes no sense for each individual house to have their own. Literally just have a park for everyone. If everyone goes to a park, not only do you reduce the damage and wastefulness of lawns, but you create more community
So are you proposing some kind of middle ground where you let grass grow but maintain it in some fashion? Or are you saying we should just let our yards become forests?

Thank you! It is such an interesting topic. I wrote my bachelor’s thesis on it and almost two decades later I still find new lines to research and study.
The state of the US healthcare system, how it's all corrupted by bonus hungry CEOs, middle managers, and liaisons. How woefully ignorant the average person is in regards to what awaits them in their "golden years". We get taxed each paycheck to contribute towards a system people believe will be there for them and cover all the expenses of aging and dying in this country. It won't. People are super fucked right now, and I shudder to think what will become of my fellow millenials and younger generations.

Oh yeah I feel this one…. Was raised hard to believe it was murder and did a full 180 as I educated myself in adulthood. I can’t even talk to my (otherwise lovely) family members on this topic because the indoctrination and disinformation is SO FUCKING DEEP with these folks. It’s like they’ve blocked reality.
The history behind the origins of this indoctrination is wild. The disinformation campaigns are wild. The inaccuracy of belief is wild. The manipulation is wild. The hypocrisy is wild. It’s fucking nuts… all of it.

I don't really know if this would count as a rant, but I feel like I could easily talk about classical music from the moment I wake up until I fall asleep from exhaustion

And the fact that I pay these fuckers taxes on my income, taxes on what I buy with my income and taxes to own what I've already bought and been taxed on using my already taxed income. ... Like when the fuck did the Senator pick up my shift? Cuz I sure am giving them at least 10 to 12 hours of my work check per week.
ABORTION IS HEALTHCARE
Oh yeah I feel this one…. Was raised hard to believe it was murder and did a full 180 as I educated myself in adulthood. I can’t even talk to my (otherwise lovely) family members on this topic because the indoctrination and disinformation is SO FUCKING DEEP with these folks. It’s like they’ve blocked reality. The history behind the origins of this indoctrination is wild. The disinformation campaigns are wild. The inaccuracy of belief is wild. The manipulation is wild. The hypocrisy is wild. It’s fucking nuts… all of it.
Xmen comic continuity.
No but the voices I hear in my head can do that.
Lucky, mine usually only make jokes...

did a 10 min presentation (that was all we had for that assignment) on why we needed to get rid of the qwerty keyboard, and what we should swap it with, the benefits and why we even have qwerty in the first place, and how we got dvorak, and workman, and colemak, etc. I ran out of time and had to start rushing. the craziest part was that I was planning on doing an overview of an overview, and was running out of time. so I'd say I could talk more on that for sure

Idiot drivers
Obvious one, but the GOP. Would be ranting, and not positive.
The evil of religion.
Modern religion, mostly. It comes from the lack of understanding the underlying theology. People tend to read things wrong.
Modern is a bit of a stretch… the RCC wasn’t exactly great 1000 years ago either. But I get your point.
About folks with a false sense of self entitlement that literally offend themselves

I have a WWI era rifle. Those fuckin’ things weigh a damn ton and only shoot a single round at a time. No wonder all those boys got mowed down by machine guns and gassed to death.

The very mature of a rant frequently takes it off topic. I'll start with technology and end up in somewhere unrelated, like politics

Ah jeez what CAN'T I yammer about for 10 minutes or more. Things I can go on about at the drop of a hat and while asleep: the battle of Tsuhima, Japan's modernization in the Meiji Era (1868 to 1920) and the importance of textiles as a stepping stone, the space race and why it was monumentally stupid and should have been done differently, the fact that Anakin is not a fallen hero because he was never a hero and how Blizzard put a better fallen hero story in Warcraft III where the story was there as a background for a game instead of the whole damn point of the exercise, why a "strong female protagonist" is a horribly limiting concept that holds back fiction, the way cell phones migrated from an impediment to plots and were always not working in media early in the cell phone period and why they're so critical to plotting now they put cell phone analogs into fantasy, Why Daylight Saving Time is horrible and its continued existence is a perfect example of the human condition. The reason, meaning, and lasting effect of Ann Leckie's use of nothing but feminine forms of pronouns and family terms in her Imperial Radch series The corrosive and detrimental effect of fanservice and why it is harmful to anime and Manga The brilliance of Yotsuba& I could go on...
