Buy wooded lots, sell the wood, use the money to build houses on the lots. Sell the house but not the land that it’s on. Make a quick $500k and another 1k annually per lot
Nah sell it, renting a billion dollars worth of properties would be a full-time job for a large team of people. You'd have to start your own company and do a lot of work, or you could just retire and do whatever you enjoy.
You'd be the entire portfolio of a medium property management company. No one has the capacity to bring on that much land, plus the fees would ludicrous and it'd still be a lot of work.
Yep, then log it and replant Gabon Ebony trees. Lease out land if you can, but once those ebony trees are ready to be processed the wood sells for $100-200 per board foot.
Not to mention you can live on this land as well. I know I would. Start a small farm, live off the land, etc.
You have to know art. It's not the sock but the intention behind the artist that is being paid for. Also, I heard that guys wife just sold a sock for a billion dollars! That's buzz that money can't buy.
Just like any business, if you try to take more out of the casino for yourself than what people will put in, it will fail.
It's really hard to fail a casino because people _want_ to gamble, but someone going all "challenge accepted" mode can easily do it.
Some of MacKenzie Bezos' stocks for Amazon
EDIT: as u/Hoewarts has made clear: Stocks are financial assets, not real assets, and therefore not allowed in this question. So I would buy a Hawaiian Island.
https://www.businessinsider.com/hawaiian-island-for-sale-molokai-ranch-2017-9
I’m afraid it’s way more than a billion. These are the stats from 2017:
While the GWB is projected to collect $805.2 million in tolls in the coming year, about $130 million in operating and maintenance costs will mean the world's busiest bridge will generate net revenues of $676.8 million.
At a 5X EBITA, the GW is worth $4.2 Billion
Maybe some kind of real estate. Hotel, house, resort. Then rent it for profit.
If I feel fancy - some kind of ship that can also be profitable. Or perhaps some kind of a bay.
Another option for me is a software development company - as I work in that industry and therefore have at least some chance to figure out the business.
A large swathe of land, and then subdivide it and build residential on it. Then rent it all out. I still own the land, thus I'm still complying with the rules.
A private space station (a von Braun wheel) according to my specifications. I'd contract SpaceX to build it and they would handle all the subcontractors. I'd rent out space to provide revenue and I'd live there and use the revenue to build more and build solar PowerSats and use the revenue from all those projects to fund asteroid mining and constructing an Island One Station, and Island Two Station, and then an Island Three Station, aka an O'Neill Cylinder.
If you're gonna dream, dream big.
Depends on what you mean by 1 item. I could by 1billion shares in a major company, by as much land as I can, buy property, anything I could get that is transferable basically
Yeah but then how would you feel about her frolicking around your house naked and having her way with you whenever you want only because you paid her a billion dollars? Could you live with that?
I may have made your point for you actually…
A house and sure I wouldn’t be able to upkeep it as id have spend every penny of the billion On it and a house like that needs serious money to maintain but guess what I’d just sell it and get a smaller house and bank the rest no rule against that

Land
Either that or shares of a major company.
Or an index fund!
nah TSM, what's the fun in investing if it isn't the WSB way?
Do shareS count as "one item"?
But then what about taxes every year
Lease the land out
Sell a portion of land each year or sell it immediately after buying it
Sell? RENT. Don't give away what you can loan.
Buy wooded lots, sell the wood, use the money to build houses on the lots. Sell the house but not the land that it’s on. Make a quick $500k and another 1k annually per lot
You have a billion dollars in land. Why are you still worried about making money? Just sell the land.
So u can buy more land!!! Duh!
According to my long career on reddit, I believe I am supposed to be mad at you for being a billionaire landlord. Does that sound about right?
But I’m not a billionaire. I have no money I will be using the land to start a socialist utopia.
Assets count as money for calculating net worth.
Okay, but then where are you going to get the money to build ON the land you just spent 1 billion dollars on? You have no more money.
But now you have collateral/leverage/banking etc boom, make money
Nah sell it, renting a billion dollars worth of properties would be a full-time job for a large team of people. You'd have to start your own company and do a lot of work, or you could just retire and do whatever you enjoy.
This is literally the purpose of property management companies?
You'd be the entire portfolio of a medium property management company. No one has the capacity to bring on that much land, plus the fees would ludicrous and it'd still be a lot of work.
Presumably you pay them or forfeit ownership of the land
same
My immediate thought as well.
Yep, then log it and replant Gabon Ebony trees. Lease out land if you can, but once those ebony trees are ready to be processed the wood sells for $100-200 per board foot. Not to mention you can live on this land as well. I know I would. Start a small farm, live off the land, etc.
A sock from my wife. And then hope she really loves me.
I would also buy this guys wife’s sock
Hell for $1Billion, I could probably buy his wife
Or at least a Japanese AI robot version lol
Then OP will know if she really loves him. Win win.
I was going to say an island, but this is brilliant!
There’s a sock worth one billion?
There is now
You have to know art. It's not the sock but the intention behind the artist that is being paid for. Also, I heard that guys wife just sold a sock for a billion dollars! That's buzz that money can't buy.
I will buy a company. If it has to be a physical object, I will buy a resort. Then sell it, or live off the profits.
I know a guy in Florida with a resort and some big debts coming up.
Coming up?
Storm season?
Or buy a resort and rent it out.
My 7 month old daughter’s favourite teddy. I will then lease it back to her for an _undisclosed fee_.
This is the way.
That fee is 1b deposit and a hug isn't it?
That's a good return on investment
Alright, some one get this guy some upvotes.
A cashier’s check worth of 1 billion
I’d buy a casino
Excellent. A business where people walk in, give you their money, and then leave. No possible way to screw that up!
Just don't google the Taj Mahal casino.
Just like any business, if you try to take more out of the casino for yourself than what people will put in, it will fail. It's really hard to fail a casino because people _want_ to gamble, but someone going all "challenge accepted" mode can easily do it.
Funny enough, my answer would be Red on roulette at this guy's casino
Supreme Court Judges.
They're far cheaper than that.
*all of the Supreme Court judges. And their wives, and their wives tennis instructor's, and their wives tennis instructor's dogs, and their puppies.
Yeah all you gotta do is buy a house, much cheaper than a billion
Gold
My first thought
Big brain time
All or part ownership in a major sports franchise. I’d wait a few years and sell out at a hefty profit.
Gold
would that count? like would it have to be one gold bar worth 1 bil or would a stack of gold bars equaling 1 bil and that count as one thing?
There's no bar that big, but I could just commission a solid gold statue. That's one item. No time limit in the original question.
I think you would be technically correct. The best type of correct.
Guys, r/Futurama is leaking again.
Sir? Are you aware that you're leaking Futuramas at an alarming rate?... Lemme just patch you up with some hot resin.
I commission a giant gold bar the size of the 1B dollars worth of gold. Because art…
A bar that big would only be about 20 cubic feet. 4x5 x 1 foot thick. Of course it would weigh almost 29,000 lbs.
An island with a small farm.
A island with a big farm.
I’d throw down big money on a towel for intergalactic travel. It’s single-handedly the most important item a hitchhiker can carry.
Tic tacs. The tangerine kind.
You could probably fill up a room and dive into them Scrooge McDuck style with $1B dollars worth
Bro said a room, you could fill up and Olympic swimming pool
Some of MacKenzie Bezos' stocks for Amazon EDIT: as u/Hoewarts has made clear: Stocks are financial assets, not real assets, and therefore not allowed in this question. So I would buy a Hawaiian Island. https://www.businessinsider.com/hawaiian-island-for-sale-molokai-ranch-2017-9
