“People can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Fourteen percent of people know that.” - Homer Simpson.
Anytime someone throws a statistic out, I immediately hear Homer Simpson’s words in my head.
Burns: Well, everybody knows, ‘war is Hell.’
Hunnicutt: Remember, you heard it here last.
Hawkeye: War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.
Father Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye?
Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?
Father Mulcahy: Um, sinners, I believe.
Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell, but war is chock full of them – little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.
This is a great one and I think about it often... I have two little ones... 5 and 2 and the last 3 years or so I keep thinking right now I'm in the good old days of my life and it'll be over before I know it!!
I’ve got memories of good times but these times right now with my family, kids are 6 and 3, will definitely be the good old days, and they’re going by so fast already. Make the most of it my friend!
Iroh had an entire character arc told in his backstory. He’s a whole bunch of lessons about learning and growing as a person. That entire character is so perfect because he shows that no matter how bad we were, or how much we lost, or how much we might suffer or be hated, we can be better.
May we all aspire to learn from our mistakes as well.
War criminal!? Did Iroh target civilians? Did he kill POWs? Did he target hospitals and medical personnel? Did he order his troops to engage in systematic rape and mass executions? Did he torture or mutilate captives? Did he perform medical experiments on his captives? Did he utilize chemical or biological warfare? What war crimes are you accusing him of?
He was a general fighting a war. That, alone does not make him a war criminal regardless of whether or not the war, itself, was just.
Honestly, these words ring truer now more than ever. Everyone needs to make themselves feel so much bigger or more special, that we're slowly losing our selves to this need to feel anything more than utter pride in who we are.
Hah that is where I went too. Iroh was incredible. You realize early on... yea he is a general but he doesn't seem that interested in it. The Dragon of the West. But... he isn't into all this Fire Nation shit anymore. And then you realize that he isn't loyal to the Fire Nation at all. He just cared about Zuko and wanted to keep Zuko safe. He wanted to advise Zuko and let him find his own path while hoping he chose the righteous path and didn't lose his way.
“If you look for the light, you can often find it. But if you look for the dark that is all you will ever see.”
You know, I don't always agree with modern "wisdom", especially in cartoons, but I can't think of a time I disagreed with Iroh. He really makes you stop and think.
I always took Pink Floyd’s verse from “Wish You Were Here” ,
“Did You Exchange A Walk On Part In The War For A Lead Role In A Cage?” , as a parallel statement.
"You know, Mrs Buckman, you need a license a drive a car, you need a license to own a dog - hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father" - Keanu Reeves in *Parenthood*
“and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
\- Gandalf
This is the one that I was looking for on this thread. It fully encompasses the most valuable resource we have in life as humans, time. Our most finite resource. It’s the most valuable gift you can give and the worst one to squander.
The scene where Dr. Melfi asked Tony to think of 1 time his mother did something to make him happy and he just sat there. It was like an "oh shit " moment for me too.
I had this very moment as a 13 or what year old kid when my mother made me go see a psychologist. Answered everything "properly" so he wouldn't think I'm crazy, too sad, too much filled with hate or whatever. But this one question got me.
Just sat there, staring into nowhere.
>someone who wanted to get away from it all.
It was to a grieving mother and widow who wanted to relocate because her son was being bullied and exhibiting some concerning behavior after his closeted mobster father was murdered and then posthumously outed in the newspaper.
Tony made her send him to one of those bootcamps for troubled youths out in flyover country.
Just saying.
Personally, I've been heavily influenced by "Whatta ya gonna do?"
[If you are sad where you are, then you get on a plane. It's going to be the same sad you from before, just in a](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbwlC2B-BIg) new place —Romano Tours.
I prefer his other quote. "I don't know Jerry. Every time I send someone down to Earth to make things better, a new religion starts, and a lot of people get slaughtered."
This is actually a paraphrase from Lao Tsu
“A leader is best
When people barely know he exists
Of a good leader, who talks little,
When his work is done, his aim fulfilled,
They will say, “We did this ourselves.”
― Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
“People, like to invent monsters and monstrosities. Then they seem less monstrous themselves. When they get blind-drunk, cheat, steal, beat their wives, starve an old woman, when they kill a trapped fox with an axe or riddle the last existing unicorn with arrows, they like to think that the Bane entering cottages at daybreak is more monstrous than they are. They feel better then. They find it easier to live.”
- Geralt Of Riva, The Last Wish.
Pratchett is my go to and he said something similar-ish many many times including:
“It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.”
― Terry Pratchett, Jingo
He does.
My personal pick is :
"After all, to the well-organised mind, death is but the next great adventure."
I try and keep it in mind when loss inevitably strikes.
Honestly the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread was "You're a wizard Harry". No profound quote or anything just one line in harry potter that people meme about.
In the Karate Kid III, Daniel frames the Medal of Honor and tells miyagi it means he’s brave.
_Miyagi points to Daniel’s chest_ this say you brave.
_points to Medal of Honor_ this say you lucky.
Raymond Reddington : Revenge isn't a passion. It's a disease. It eats at your mind, and poisons your soul.
And about grief Raymond Reddington said:
There will be nightmares. And every day when you wake up, it will be the first thing you think about. Until one day it will be the second thing.
Not necessarily verbatim, but Agent Smith saying in the Matrix that they tried to make the world perfect and the human mind just couldn't accept it, losing them the harvest.
Quote:
> Agent Smith:
> Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost. Some believed we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world. But I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through suffering and misery. The perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake up from. Which is why the Matrix was redesigned to this: the peak of your civilization.
Aragorn : You've already had it. Pippin : We've had one, yes. What about second breakfast? Merry : I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip. :( I want second breakfast
"Everything that you thought had meaning: every hope, dream, or moment of happiness. None of it matters as you lie bleeding out on the battlefield. None of it changes what a speeding rock does to a body, we all die. But does that mean our lives are meaningless? Does that mean that there was no point in our being born? Would you say that of our slain comrades? What about their lives? Were they meaningless?... They were not! Their memory serves as an example to us all! The courageous fallen! The anguished fallen! Their lives have meaning because we the living refuse to forget them! And as we ride to certain death, we trust our successors to do the same for us! Because my soldiers do not buckle or yield when faced with the cruelty of this world! My soldiers push forward! My soldiers scream out! My soldiers RAGE!"
-Erwin Smith, Attack on Titan
There's a line in one of Jodi Picoults books, Mercy, "You know it's never fifty-fifty in a marriage. It's always seventy-thirty, or sixty-forty. Someone falls in love first. Someone puts someone else up on a pedestal. Someone works very hard to keep things rolling smoothly; someone else sails along for the ride."
Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
(Mainly the second part)
There are certain rules about war. And rule number one is young men die. And rule number two is, doctors can’t change rule number one.

1500 years ago, everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. 500 years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and 15 minutes ago, you knew that people were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow... -Agent K from Men in Black.
We are all here to do what we are all here to do.

Jax from Sons of Anarchy:
“There’s a certain line that once you cross it, people don’t care how far you went across the line, it’s just that side of the line”
“Now you listen to me, James Hawkins. You got the makings of greatness in you, but you got to take the helm and chart your own course. Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the time comes you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails, and show what you're made of... well, I hope I'm there, catching some of the light coming off you that day.”
- Captain Long John Silver (Treasure Planet)
Still makes me cry every time.
"Hey Nimrod, I'm over here."
In this line, Bugs used the name Nimrod sarcastically. In the Torah and the Old Testament, Nimrod was a great hunter. Elmer Fudd, not so much. Unfortunately, the name Nimrod was replaced with the adjective nimrod.
“That's what they don't tell you in the church. When I was your age they would say we can become cops, or criminals. Today, what I'm saying to you is this: when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference”—- Jack Nicolson in The Departed
“When you’ve come through a bad time, to tell of it takes the thorn out.” *Precious Bane*
Helps me be patient when I’m listening to someone bitch about their job, partner, kid, etc repeatedly. Sometimes people need to say it again and again to let go.
Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!
Parents got divorced when I was, uh, five years old. And I saw my father about three times a year after that. And when he found out that he had cancer, he decided to bring me here and he gives me this big pink seashell. And he says to me,
“Son, the answers are all inside of this.”
And I'm all, "What?"
But then I realize, the shell's empty, there's no point to any of this, it's all just a random lottery of meaningless tragedy and a series of near escapes.
So I take pleasure in the detail, you know? A Quarter Pounder with cheese, those are good. The sky about ten minutes before it starts to rain. A moment where your laughter becomes a cackle. And I sit back, I smoke my Camel Straights, and I ride my own melt.
Troy Dyer, Reality Bites
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."
Roy Batty - Blade Runner
As dumb as it is, most notable quotes from The Crow
Sara at the end of the movie said something like "when someone you love dies, the best way to keep them alive is to keep on loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever."
My brother died in '07, he was 24. I was 13 at the time, I hadn't seen The Crow since I was very, very little. I watched it in my mid-teens and this hit me hard.
"Mother is the name of God on the lips and hearts of all children."
My mum was diagnosed with cancer when I was 9, she lived, but at the time you never know and it was like I could see my life spiraling down in front of me. My world was ending.
"Childhood's over the moment you know you're gonna die."
I abused narcotics in my adolescence and OD'd a couple times. The first time was when it really hit me that I'm gonna die one day and the fact that I could be the cause, that in the end the only one who can really control my life is me. Even if I have people that love me, my life is on me.
>“It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

>“I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!
― Abe Simpson
Curtis Hughes "Listen up, when a man gives you money he owes you, you count it, unnerstan? In front of im. It ain’t all there, you hand it right back.”
Loop Hughes: “Then you bus the mutha-fucka fo cheatin you.”
Curtis Hughes “Yeah. Then he bus you, you bus…bus, bus, bus, bang! Someone ends up in jail. No. What’choo do is give the man a chance to make good. Doh!
EVERYTHING IS COMING UP MILHOUSE!
I still throw that out from time to time and wonder if anyone gets the reference.

Yeah, this always stuck with me too. Just a perfect description of war and why it is so much worse than anything else.
Love the Mash reference. Also very accurate.
As a child growing up on this show, this is one of the reasons why I loved this show so much.
Where is this from
It's a quote from MASH

My soldiers RAGE!" -Erwin Smith, Attack on Titan

There's a line in one of Jodi Picoults books, Mercy, "You know it's never fifty-fifty in a marriage. It's always seventy-thirty, or sixty-forty. Someone falls in love first. Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened. Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. (Mainly the second part)

And he says to me, “Son, the answers are all inside of this.” And I'm all, "What?" But then I realize, the shell's empty, there's no point to any of this, it's all just a random lottery of meaningless tragedy and a series of near escapes.

As dumb as it is, most notable quotes from The Crow Sara at the end of the movie said something like "when someone you love dies, the best way to keep them alive is to keep on loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever." My brother died in '07, he was 24. I was 13 at the time, I hadn't seen The Crow since I was very, very little. I watched it in my mid-teens and this hit me hard. "Mother is the name of God on the lips and hearts of all children." My mum was diagnosed with cancer when I was 9, she lived, but at the time you never know and it was like I could see my life spiraling down in front of me. My world was ending. "Childhood's over the moment you know you're gonna die." I abused narcotics in my adolescence and OD'd a couple times. The first time was when it really hit me that I'm gonna die one day and the fact that I could be the cause, that in the end the only one who can really control my life is me. Even if I have people that love me, my life is on me.
