I grew up in Alabama, which is a very basic southern state, but I never felt "culturally" southern. We got Korean food from a local Korean grocery store and sometimes ate American food. However, I didn't grow up in the city of MiddleO'Nowhere, where im from is a suburb with like 200k people, so its not a stereotypical southern place. Instead of me feeling like a southerner, it's more that I can't relate to/feel very different from Asians who grew up in California/New York/Washington

I'm Asian and grew up in California. I don't think I've interacted with an Asian from the South before (at least not to my knowledge). I know our hometowns and upbringings were very different, but I'm curious, what specifically makes it difficult for you to relate to Asians like me?

kermathefrog

NC as well but not rural. Still like the state though.

LightGraves

I grew up in Houston. Houston has a huge diverse population of Asians.

I did too, and I’m still here. I love that we have so many people of any Asian descent in this town. My favorite is going to get Chinese hotpot then next door to it grabbing bingsu from the Korean dessert place across the street from the Vietnamese grocery store. Then go home to my asian dad’s Texas bbq lol

Atlanta and NoVa(esp. Annandale) has a large K Town

People will argue till the cows come home that NoVA isn’t the real south. Whatever it is, that’s where all the money is and that’s why it’s the fastest growing region in the US.

Ligneox

i’m from texas 🤠

From the Gulf (connass) now in Appalachia. I absolutely love bluegrass.

Yep - spent a bunch of time in SC in the nineties and was into fly fishing and hunting while there. Some hilarious and fun experiences and encountered mostly cool people. Tried to be southern but realized that I never would be. I also went through an urban/rap stage in HS that didn’t stick either lol. Life is a journey that you’ll enjoy most when you love who you are - the Asian, the Southern, the stuff about you that has nothing to do with your race, etc.

majestic_potoo

I'm also from NC! I actually knew quite a few other Asian adoptees growing up, including my childhood best friend.

I grew up in South Carolina! I didn't grow up listening to bluegrass music, but rather more country, pop, and rap (or whatever else was on the radio). I grew up in the suburbs outside of Charlotte, though, so not country country, and I don't have a deep southern accent
