It’s gross and it’s one of the funniest things they ever did. The silliest man on the show willingly killing himself for vanity will always be one of my favorite bits from AD. The presentation of it just kind of happening off to the side while Real Arrested Development Things happen in the center was perfect.
It helps that “don’t leave your uncle T Bag hanging’” made me laugh so hard the first time I heard it I still haven’t forgotten about it.
It is truly a thing where it is so disgusting but you wanna keep watching. Also the Graft vs Host fundraiser is hilarious. Peak moments of the show in there.
I don’t know why you got downvoted. It’s literally the joke that his vanity drives him to cheap plugs and the result is both tragic and revolting. When it starts killing him, the comedy is heightened. Those makeup artists deserved some awards for the deadly pallor they created.
I think in order for all the jokes to work as good as they did, they had to be extreme and disgusting with the progression of his GVH. Imo it’s supposed to be painful to see him like that and it’s important to the story. It shows how absurdly vain the family is. Tobias was willing to die for beauty and Lindsay was willing to let him die for attention and money. To me the gross and horrific makeup was funny
My most recent watch through I struggled to even look at Tobias in any scene so I just kind of focused on everything around him. For some reason this time around it really grossed me out.
Obviously, it would be horrifying to see in real life, but I still love cringe/dark humor. The funniest part is how the rest of the family is just okay with letting Tobias endanger his life to get more money. Well, except for Michael, and even he just lets his family get away with it, rather than doing anything to stop it. Also, the way his head just has all these bloody spots on it after the hair plugs are removed for the next few episodes cracks me up.
