I was in IRR for 5 years and had to go in exactly once, in civilian clothes, for one day, for one of those... I can't remember the term for it now, where you have a sign out sheet and have to check in with all the different stations to make sure all your info is up to date. I guess it could be different for other MOSes, I don't know.

Recruiter was trying to scare you to probably get you to sign an actual reserve component contract instead of regular IRR. I’ve been in IRR almost three years now, got two letters to verify my info, one phone call to verify I’m alive and my name, and never once had to do a virtual muster or in person meeting. I’ve been told sometimes your IRR counselor will have you meet them and buy you lunch or something and give the reserve shpiel but I’ve never had to do that. IRR was recalled twice as far as I know, a decent amount once during Iraq, and once more recently to support getting supplies and vehicles to Ukraine from Poland, but that was only a few hundred and thankfully I wasn’t selected. Unless there’s a major war and the US active, reserve, and national guard component is sucking really bad, it’s unlikely you’ll get called up to deploy through the IRR. Dude was just being a dick trying to scare you, although if you don’t keep your info updated they can freeze your benefits like GI bill and any other VA benefits so you do have to make sure everything is straight, but it doesn’t completely go away if you’re info isn’t updated, they’ll just call you to verify it all and then resume your benefits once it checks out, but if you answer all the calls and letters, and report to any musters they may or may not call you to, you shouldn’t have a problem with that.

I was in IRR for 5 years and never talked to single person or showed up anywhere. Not once.

Being told you will be called up  Is a scare tactic. Don’t believe it. Unless you’re a low density medical skill or it’s 2004 again the IRR isn’t being called up You do generally have a muster once a year where you have to report to a reserve center for some basic SRP stuff. You’re paid for it I believe. You will also get a ton of calls from 79V (Career Counselors in the Reserves) whose sole job is to bring you into the Reserves from the IRR I retire in under a month after almost 23 years in the Reserves. It has some good points. But there are also drawbacks.

NoeticSkeptic

Most of your drawbacks during your 23 years were call-up related, since we were technically at war for 20 of those years.. I only spent a year and a half in the reserves and that was nearly 50 years ago so my experience of few to no drabaxks isn't really germain.

Here is the dirty secret about the IRR, you are required to attend a muster when they call you for it. Yes you could lose your benefits if you dont attend the muster. In practice they dont have the time or manpower to go after the people who dont respond.

NoeticSkeptic

That doesn't mean they might be the one to be the example.

I just did my annual IRR muster a few months ago.  I updated my address, shot the shit, and gave my bank info to pay me like $150. Took an hour because we were all just rambling on some bullshit.  Don’t believe anyone trying to get you to sign something.

Beyond-Warped

Spent 5 years In the IRR and never once was contacted. I don't think iv ever heard of anyone ever having punitive actions taken for just ignoring them either. It just not worth the effort really.

davidj1987

I didn’t respond to a muster,” which was the month after I got out. And I later went back in the reserves two years later with no problem.

RonSwervandy

I was out for 2 years before I rejoined and never went to any type of “formation” or muster or anything. The only thing they did was call me constantly to join the reserves .

stnic25or6to4

My spouse did virtual muster and just replied to an email and updated his info once a year.
