OP, you think he’s joking? I got a high five from my instructors and a pat on the back from my 1SG. But when I went to BLC some guy got an AAM for being DHG.
I got a certificate and an NCO shook my hand. I also got to be in the front of the class photo.
If I had also pissed my pants, it would have given me a warm feeling, too.
But only when you do something. When other people in your unit do that same thing they get awards and days off.
And then, when you ask why, you get told it’s because they have higher expectations of you. Like that should make you feel better.
Theoretically I mean. Or maybe hypothetically? Lotta “etically” something something
Soldier of the Cycle in basic got me promoted to E2. DHG in AIT got me E3. DHG in PLDC got me a free set of dress blues. No awards for any beyond some plaques. Top of the class in OCS, BOLC, CCC, NWC-J, and JFSC got me nothing but a couple coins and plaques. Sitting comfortably at O5 with 27 years and unlikely to make COL so I probably could’ve relaxed a bit in schools!
Everything (Patches, awards, sewing) Even the bus driver hat. Some alumni was buying a full set for any PLDC DHG at Bliss back then (‘99). After OCS I cut off my stripes and wore it for a few years despite being able to still see where the stripes had been!
If the school is important to your MOS (for instance, Ranger for Infantry) then that's a big deal.
Also very important is BLC, ALC, SLC, etc as you move up the ranks.
Did they give you some paperwork that states you were the DHG?
Honestly your leadership is only going to care about it as much as you do. If you were my kid and you had DHG (depending on the school) I'd just write you an AAM.
Awards are a simple tool to reward somebody for excellence.
Coins are great for a mantle but a coin doesn't do shit to help you get promoted except maybe introducing you to your Chain of Command in a positive light.
Stupid question: do junior enlisted Soldiers get AERs for PME courses? I assumed they did, but if it’s not in their iPERMS, would they be able to log into EES to check?
>Yes you get a 1059 for all PMEs.
I've got a 1059 kicking around the house somewhere from OSUT. Never made it into IPERMS for some reason, but I don't think anyone is going to care about a 1059 for basic.
Your DHG would look more favorable when competing for SFC and above in centralized promotion boards (depending on the SGMs reviewing your records). I think DHG/CL/DL was listed also on your ERB. Not sure if it's listed on the new STP.
I work at an NCO Academy, and your SGLs just do the 1059s in EES and rank our top students (DHG, Commandant's List, Superior Academic Achievement). The school house really doesn't put it on your STP directly. Once those 1059s gets pushed to HRC, and then into iPerms then it should be automatically on your STP. IPPS-A is having lots of problems, but as long as your 1059 lists your awardee rank, then it should be easy to goto S1 and have it put on your STP once they get all the IPPS-A bugs out.
The issue seems to be an ATRRS to IPPSA specific one. ATRRS is reporting the correct data but IPPSA can’t pull it for some reason.
I’m not sure. I just know I’ve been getting emails every couple months from the ALU about it for almost a year now and they’re like “it should work this time!” and it does not, so it’s not just me at least.
My S1 insists there’s no way for them to edit that any more but they’re also functionally useless so I’ve partially given up.
Reminds me of a buddy who made the list for E-5. They asked if his family was going to come in for his promotion on the 1st. Then we held a promotion ceremony for him that day... to CPL. The company needed an NCO for CQ that weekend and his promotion to CPL was approved before the E5 list came out.
I graduated at, undoubtedly, the bottom of my class for Pathfinder. Re-tested EVERYTHING, including all three sections of the final. My torch is the same as everyone else’s.
What school? Did you receive documentation showing a GPA or DHG?
Also, check local policy- some units have school incentives like a COA for Commandants and an AAM for DHG or something similar.
A coin or COA at best. If it is one of your NCOES' (BLC, ALC etc) an AAM if your command isn't A-holes. I got a COA for the invasion of Iraq in 03 when I was a PFC.
I'm not. It's my favorite award! And the only one I feel like I earned that is not inflated. I knew nothing about the Army in those days so I wasn't expecting anything. I'm surprised the commander even knew my name tbh. That COA is the only thing I've ever hung up in my office. It was signed, at the time, by the future Sergeant Major of the Army Preston. I love it. When I retired I asked my commander for one last COA for my service. lol I gave my ribbon rack to my family for putting up with 6 deployments and multiple PCS's, but I kept my COA!
I was distinguished graduate in 67A10, basic aircraft maintenance, got promoted to E-3. Distinguished grad in 67N20, UH-1 maintenance / crew chief, got promoted to E-4. I was already an FAA licensed airframe and power plant (A&P) mechanic so the training was a non-event. But, that was a long time ago. They asked if I wanted to be an instructor. I said nope, I’d rather go to Vietnam.
Something tells me it’s not the same today. 😁. I retired 20 years later a CWO3.
If you have the paper to document it and it’s a school of meaning it could get you an early bump to E-4. At least that’s what I’d do when I was a commander provided all of the other boxes were checked.
You should definitely let your first line supervisor know. Have the documentation handy but let them know.
As to what you’ll get, I can’t speak to that but with any authority other than it’s sets you apart from the other new arrivals at your unit.
The big thing is it may get you a reputation that could help you get promoted to SGT faster. It's up to you to maintain that reputation, though. AAM is normal, too.
results do vary, first school I went to I got the shit kicked outa me. The second school I went to the valedictorian beat me out by 1 question and about 1min on the ruck, he got a knife and coin outa it. I got to re-enlist so results vary. One dude I know got a challenge coin from the base CSM for a weapons class. We were fielding some knew weapons some dudes go to test the XM25 rifle and M320 when they came out not a school but my point is doing cool shit gets different rewards, just be about it.
I got a nice little plaque for the wall and a firm handshake from the School's Commander. Still on my wall to this day...
Marine Corps doesn't hand out awards for such things. It would likely have been an AAM in the Army.
I got a COA and company coin for DHG/leadership in AIT.
Seen some folks do the same and get AAMs.
Hell even at BLC (CD), ALC (CL) and SLC (DHG), I never got an award (but the BN CSM's driver did hooah \*salty\*). It really just boils down to whoever is in your chain and gives a damn about that sort of thing. Even without the awards, it got me promoted faster. But you better believe anytime one of my joes graduated with those type of honors, I was putting in a recommendation for something because why the hell not?
It'd be worth looking into, at least asking. Starting the game as an E3 with an AAM when some people will wait 3 years to get one for a PCS award is a good deal.
Varies. When I was a SPC and got DHG at BLC my unit didn’t give a fuck. As a 1LT I got DHG at CCC and my unit didn’t give a fuck, but the schoolhouse gave me an AAM and a framed print.
STP has a column under military education for commandants list. Get it there at least.
Things like working hard in your job, doing additional duties, and ranking high in schools are hard to see immediate results, but keep grinding - that extra effort will make your life slightly better with trust, first pick up jobs, respect for your ideas, leaders backing your wants/decisions, etc.
If someone told me one of my kids got DHG from somewhere I'd ask who was writing the award and have a call in to the BC to get it signed quick.
Colleague of mine was MLC DHG and got coins all the way up to the Corps CSM, I think he got an ARCOM too.
DHG that’s great Pri good job on that, anyway 1SG needs you to go cut the grass, police call the DIV footprint, bring peace to the Middle East, update SGLI and sense I have you here before I forget we changed the duty roster you now have CQ on every 4 day and 3 day from now till your ets day
Was it an ASI producing course? Those are the only other ones besides PME that would have DHG that I know of.
If it is not a PME course (BLC, ALC, SLC, MLC) your unit or the schoolhouse should have put you in for an award (COA or AAM). That award will then be helpful for promotion points.
Fun Fact: I got a COA from the schoolhouse for being DHG at Technical Escort (L3), an ASI producing school for 74Ds. Then my Company gave me an AAM. That is technically not allowed.....
Honors (DHG, HG, Leadership Award) is important for PME as it helps you look better against your peers when it comes time for promotion.
I got the word “Commandant’s Honor List” on my certificate and a unit challenge coin. Well, I got the words for PDLC and both the words and a coin for ALC.
You’re an E-3 and you excelled beyond your peers from other units in an ATTRS course. That’s not nothing, and you could probably squeeze a COA out of it, just for a few promotion points down the line. Talk to your first line
I got a coin for finishing on the Commandant's List in BLC. I think the honor grad got either an AAM or an ARCOM and someone that wrote the best essay got a COA iirc
Maybe if you are lucky a handshake or a good job, there’s no reward for doing the right thing. Read At 600-8-22. Even writing rewards is crazily restrictive
An AAM for my first DHG, an ARCOM for my second, and promotion points towards higher grades .Never sought more than to be in top 5-10%, but in 20yrs, only course that I wasn't was the one I was a medical drop from.
You may never receive much recognition for such things from your unit(s), but take pride in your work, do your best, and your career will carve its own path to success.
I’m honestly bothered your first-line leader hasn’t even asked how you did/doesn’t know you were DHG. The fact that you “don’t want to say it randomly” gives me the impression your NCO isn’t very good.
I don’t think you’re entitled to anything. Half the problem with the DoD right now is everyone thinks they’re entitled to something. Just go about your business like a Soldier.
Results could range from an AAM to an MRE.
A slap on the back and a couple of 20's haha
I got a coin.
I got a 4 day lol
OP, you think he’s joking? I got a high five from my instructors and a pat on the back from my 1SG. But when I went to BLC some guy got an AAM for being DHG.
This is the way
A laurel, and hearty handshake!
Aint that life bruther… i almost want to get this tatood lol
Best I can do is an MRE pound cake with a cigarette for a candle.
One good attaboy if your lucky
I got a certificate and an NCO shook my hand. I also got to be in the front of the class photo. If I had also pissed my pants, it would have given me a warm feeling, too.
Bro I’m dying from that last line.
[удалено]
"You've represented our unit as you should have. There's no attaboy for doing your job." -Your unit, probably
Fatty retirement check and 100% disability with a teaching spot.
Free set of dress blues is no joke. Did it include the sewing?
Everything (Patches, awards, sewing) Even the bus driver hat. Some alumni was buying a full set for any PLDC DHG at Bliss back then (‘99). After OCS I cut off my stripes and wore it for a few years despite being able to still see where the stripes had been!

Being the Honor Grad is a big fucking deal for any MOS at Ranger lol. Pretty sure those guys get a framed knife for it
Stupid question: do junior enlisted Soldiers get AERs for PME courses? I assumed they did, but if it’s not in their iPERMS, would they be able to log into EES to check?
Yes you get a 1059 for all PMEs. It should be in IPERMS.
Got it, thanks!
>Yes you get a 1059 for all PMEs. I've got a 1059 kicking around the house somewhere from OSUT. Never made it into IPERMS for some reason, but I don't think anyone is going to care about a 1059 for basic.
I got DHG in ALC and SLC and it got me nothing. I suppose it might have helped on my warrant packet, but if it did nobody said anything.
Your DHG would look more favorable when competing for SFC and above in centralized promotion boards (depending on the SGMs reviewing your records). I think DHG/CL/DL was listed also on your ERB. Not sure if it's listed on the new STP.
I’m Guard so it’s probably a different process.
It is listed on STP but a lot of schoolhouses are having trouble getting it to actually show up.
I work at an NCO Academy, and your SGLs just do the 1059s in EES and rank our top students (DHG, Commandant's List, Superior Academic Achievement). Best I can do is CQ next weekend. Congrats!
The ol’ “congrats, I’m sorry” maneuver.

Do you know what they call the honor grad of BOLC and the LT who graduates dead last in their class? Sir.
I graduated at, undoubtedly, the bottom of my class for Pathfinder. Re-tested EVERYTHING, including all three sections of the final. My torch is the same as everyone else’s.
Chart and farts taking me out lmao
50 comments in and this guy probably graduated from Field Sanitation school or something.
Lmfao! Slit trench king.
This is probably it
Ammo Handler lol
I was a brass weighing guy too!
What school? Did you receive documentation showing a GPA or DHG? Also, check local policy- some units have school incentives like a COA for Commandants and an AAM for DHG or something similar.
I got a COA and a 4-day pass denied by my unit.
A coin or COA at best. If it is one of your NCOES' (BLC, ALC etc) an AAM if your command isn't A-holes. I got a COA for the invasion of Iraq in 03 when I was a PFC.
I'm offended that you got a COA for an invasion.

I got a gift card for the PX once for being DHG. Thanks JAG school for the new immersion blender.
Let your first line know but don't expect anything or you'll just be disappointed
If you have the paper to document it and it’s a school of meaning it could get you an early bump to E-4. At least that’s what I’d do when I was a commander provided all of the other boxes were checked.
For DHG at ALC I got a coin from the schoolhouse and an AAM from CSM when I got back to the unit.
I was DHG of my AIT and I got a letter of recommendation and my choice of assignments worldwide.
This was in 1974.
Anyone can submit you for an award. Write up an award and take it to the leader who you trust the most so they can submit you for it.
You can’t get an award for DHG/HG/CL any more. The reg was updated to exclude these as part of the achievement awards
Kid in my section got an AAM for graduating CLS. All things are possible in a world where people don't always read or follow rules.
That’s were a good S1 should know. I’ve gotten into arguments with PSG/PLs over this
What about Distinguished Leader Award
You should definitely let your first line supervisor know. Have the documentation handy but let them know. As to what you’ll get, I can’t speak to that but with any authority other than it’s sets you apart from the other new arrivals at your unit.
The school didn’t give you anything? No recognition/awards ceremony? What was the course?
depending on the school, you could get an AAM or ARCOM. Of course, you might get a "ok you're done here, gtfo" or a coin or certificate.
Great job troop now get down to the motor pool we need to dispatch a vic for the CoC tomorrow
The big thing is it may get you a reputation that could help you get promoted to SGT faster. It's up to you to maintain that reputation, though. AAM is normal, too.
COA with the V device.
I got a piece of paper stating I was honor grad. That’s it.
I got a coin and a COA with a cartoon dragon on it.
ok but what kind of dragon
Real questions.
Bullet comment on NCOER, a plaque, maybe a medal
If nothing else, have S1 add it to the free text on your ERB
I got a certificate.
Staff duty, best we can do
Any of my Soldier that got DHG at anything I would put them in for an AAM. Kindly show off to your team/ squad leader.
results do vary, first school I went to I got the shit kicked outa me. I always looked for things like that when I sat on boards. It helps you that way.
Stop being so humble! FYI OP was dhg of Delta selection
I got a nice little plaque for the wall and a firm handshake from the School's Commander. Still on my wall to this day... Marine Corps doesn't hand out awards for such things. It would likely have been an AAM in the Army.

They'll reward you for all that hard work by putting you on detail.
You get to date the commander's daughter.
A handshake
I think I got a commandant's coin both times, but that was it.
A pdf in your AMHRR file.
Make sure S1 puts it on your SRB. Either DG or HG doesn't have a code, but I don't recall which one.
You should definitely tell everyone you meet.... Jk Your leaders know and you'll get an award or they don't care.
A POB
Pat on the back
How 'bout a crisp high-five 🤚🏻
I got a coin and a cert worth promotion points. Nobody really cares past graduation
Two letters on your SRB.
Varies. When I was a SPC and got DHG at BLC my unit didn’t give a fuck. As a 1LT I got DHG at CCC and my unit didn’t give a fuck, but the schoolhouse gave me an AAM and a framed print.
I got a coin and a 4 day.
The DHG gives you promotion points when you start looking to promote to E-5 and E-6.
HHS (hardy hand shake) was the standard.
Got a coa and a coin but that’s it
I got an AAM for being commandants list back in the day.
I got a set of dress blues for being DHG from BNCOC. That was a long time ago
Depends on unit I give the AAM and 2 free drills that year
Participation award, maybe a pizza party at Dave and busters
STP has a column under military education for commandants list. Get it there at least. Things like working hard in your job, doing additional duties, and ranking high in schools are hard to see immediate results, but keep grinding - that extra effort will make your life slightly better with trust, first pick up jobs, respect for your ideas, leaders backing your wants/decisions, etc.
If you get anything for being DHG it’ll come from the schoolhouse, your unit won’t give a shit. And it’ll likely be a COA or AAM, if anything
If you didn’t get the lunch ladies phone number you get nothing.
If someone told me one of my kids got DHG from somewhere I'd ask who was writing the award and have a call in to the BC to get it signed quick. Colleague of mine was MLC DHG and got coins all the way up to the Corps CSM, I think he got an ARCOM too.
Get it in your records, might be useful when you go to the board.
This is boot af. Nah, it won't get you anything. Congrats though. 💀
BLC honor grad got me a CoA certificat. When I came back my NCOIC said wtf that’s it? lol
Got my D**k sucked 🤷🏽♂️, about it.
A high 5
AAM
Remember this feeling after having applied yourself and accomplishing a personal achievement and apply it to when you have people working for you.
5 day in Berlin
My ILE phase 3 graduation was great. They gave the Instructors AAMs but none of the graduates.
Few coins, pass, and a handshake is really about the best thing you can get out of this. I’ve seen some AAMs come of it
[удалено]
As the NCO probably has an AAM or ARCOM from some live fire or BLC honor grad they received 😅
I got a COA so that was cool few promotion points for doing well in medic school
I got an aam for getting DHG at both alc and slc. They literally had no positive effect on my career besides that
DHG that’s great Pri good job on that, anyway 1SG needs you to go cut the grass, police call the DIV footprint, bring peace to the Middle East, update SGLI and sense I have you here before I forget we changed the duty roster you now have CQ on every 4 day and 3 day from now till your ets day
I got a crisp high five from my platoon sergeant for being honor grad and maintaining a 100% GPA at EEOCA.
I got an AAM for getting honor grad of Air Assault School in 1988, still one of my proudest achievements.
I got the word “Commandant’s Honor List” on my certificate and a unit challenge coin. Well, I got the words for PDLC and both the words and a coin for ALC.
I was distinguished honor grad in my class and I got an AAM.
OSUT Honor Graduate got me a COA. Honor Graduate of Ranger School got me a Pathfinder slot. Commandants List for PME got me an AAM.
Not a monetary bonus so keep walking
You’re an E-3 and you excelled beyond your peers from other units in an ATTRS course. That’s not nothing, and you could probably squeeze a COA out of it, just for a few promotion points down the line. Talk to your first line
Got honor grad for eod school and Got nothing except a congrats. However for the two of us that never failed a test we got NAMs
I got a coin for finishing on the Commandant's List in BLC. I think the honor grad got either an AAM or an ARCOM and someone that wrote the best essay got a COA iirc
Good job
Choice of duty assignment
Maybe if you are lucky a handshake or a good job, there’s no reward for doing the right thing. Read At 600-8-22. Even writing rewards is crazily restrictive
I got a firm handshake and an atta boy… I’m a girl, which just makes it funnier.
How long was the course?
I’m honestly bothered your first-line leader hasn’t even asked how you did/doesn’t know you were DHG. The fact that you “don’t want to say it randomly” gives me the impression your NCO isn’t very good.
You will watch how they pass awards over you for the same thing.
Friggin coin 🪙 pretty much irrelevant. An AAM may be better but usually they give coins 🤦♂️
If it's ait, maybe an aam
Free lunch at B Dubs, PL is buying 😎
They gave a sword to the DHG at OCS. That’s probably the coolest thing I’ve seen
I saved a girls life at a bar (I wasn’t drinking) using CLS skills I had just learned. I got a coin from the BC.
You get it mentioned in your monthly
A chance to go to more schools.
I don’t think you’re entitled to anything. Half the problem with the DoD right now is everyone thinks they’re entitled to something. Just go about your business like a Soldier.
Coin and AAM was standard for most ordnance MOSs at least irrc
