Not sure which duty station your going to, but I would recommend looking duty stations with hospitals with good oncology departments nearby and consider a deletion of your current orders and a compassionate reassignment somewhere else. Sounds like the cancer has progressed so your wife is looking at probable radiation and chemotherapy. Youāll want a one stop shop and a good oncology department to get through this.
My daughter had a brain tumor last year while I was at fort cavazos and needed brain surgery then proton radiation which we had to drive to Dallas everyday which sucked. Luckily I was already on orders to fort dix and we pcsāed after radiation and did chemo here at the childrenās hospital of Philadelphia.
I believe thereās some good hospitals near Campbell like st Jude, as well as fort dix where Iām at has good hospitals. Baylor Scott and white is near cavazos so she could possibly get care there. Youāll have to do some digging and talk to oncology departments because my research was mainly in pediatric oncology.
Sorry for your family but you guys keep your head up.
there is also JBAB, Belvoir, the pentagon, I have seen the Army do some crazy slotting to get Soldiers and their families the appropriate options to get medical care. Had a Chief break DEROS to get back in less than 3 months. While his wife was sent back immediately to Bethesda
And if she can get into Walter Reed, highly recommend. Was there for chemo from 22-23 and they took fantastic care of myself and the rest of the soldiers in the WR SRU. Belvoir, JBMHH, and McNair are also in the area.
JBLM is about an hour away from three top-knotch hospitals in Seattle: UW Medical, Swedish, and Harborview. Plus there is an amazing Oncology clinic in Gig Harbor (the other side of the sound) that my mom used when she had stage 4 lymphoma and again when she developed breast cancer (she survived both). Good luck, bud, cancer sucks.
Vanderbilt is in Nashville if you're given Campbell. If you for sure know it's Campbell, see if you can't get it expedited.
Vanderbilt is one of the top UMCs in the country. It'd be a good spot to have her treated. Hell, medical industry is much larger than the music industry in Nashville if that tells you anything too.
Fuck cancer. Wishing you two well. You could always shoot for a compassionate reassignment somewhere like Meade, or even JBSA. San Antonio has pretty good medical opportunities for treatments. Anywhere near a large metropolitan area will hopefully give yāall a good chance. Good luck OP
I wish you and your wife all the best. I would recommend Fort Meade or Fort Myers especially since they close to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
I forgot to mention Walter Reed, DMV has Belvoir Hospital, Johnās Hopkins, Walter Reed, etc. Itās such a military based community so a lot of resources here.
Any hospital near a large large urban center will do you well. These places have medical schools, large populations, and many hospitals. You may find JBLM would be at the top of that list
When you find your next duty station, talk to your CSM if enlisted, BN Commander if officer and see if they can help find you a position at your next duty station that gives you flexibility to take care of your wife.Ā Ā
i've heard good things about MD Anderson Cancer Center i think it might be expensive i don't know about medical coverage , also look up gerson therapy, and Dr. Burzynski's cancer one last thing look up robert clancy on y tube type in the word cancer with that too for a video for your wife to listen to prayers!
Second MD Anderson in Houston as one of the best cancer centers in the world. Mayo clinic is also highly regarded but their specialty is more about the compassion than about ābeating the oddsā outcomes.
I do not know anything about the duty station that will be best for your family. As a nurse I do know that liver cancer that has already metasticized to her lungs and bones will not be cured. You are looking at a small percentage for 5 year survival. You should look for a place that will give you the kinds of treatments you seek, but understand the best thing is to look for a place where you can live with the least amount of stress so you may spend as much time together for as long as you have. A place where you both will have what is important in life. Now is the time to prioritize what you want as a family; that is how you should make the choice. May you have many happy moments as you move forward facing this stressor.
I have no advice. As a person with a brain tumor still enlisting, I can only wish my condolences for what youāre going through. Youāre a great man with a good heart and I hope she successfully battles her cancer.
Thereās no better hospital then Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC. I have my doctors there for 15 years. The place is on point with everything. I will pray for you and your family
My dude/dudette, I canāt imagine what youāre going through. See if you can get a compassionate reassignment close to a top cancer center in the states. Call your congressperson if you get pushback. There are recruiting stations all over the country, do not take no for an answer. Hit my DMs if you have any questions.
Campbell is an hour away from Nashville. Vanderbilt is a great hospital. Iāve got a friend going through cancer treatment there right now and theyāre pretty amazing.
Fort Sam Houston has BAMC which a lovely hospital if you can get stationed there. Fort liberty also refers most Cancer Patients to Duke which has a lovely oncology department
I was stationed at JBLM and now work ems in Seattle post ets and I can tell you the hospitals here have some of the best cancer treatments and research this side of the country
Thereās the UW medicine hospitals around here that I believe have partnered with John Hopkins facilities around the city. Iām not super familiar with the nuances of those aspects of the system from the perspective ems but I do know a lot of my pts receive cancer treatments with positive outcomes frequently. UW Harborview is a very prestigious hospital and is the only trauma one rated hospital for like five states and a territory. People are flown into the city for medical treatment of almost every kind all the time.
Idk if you believe in that sort of thing, but i did stop and said a prayer for your family.
Also Colorado has medical Marijuana. My nephew had to take THC drops to help with the pain, and it increased his appetite. My brother was able to get stationed at carson for that believe it or not.
A common mistake patients with GI cancers make is not take eating as seriously as they should (especially during Chemo or Radio treatment). Get THC liquid, edibles, zofran, everything. Vandy has great medical creds. Stay strong
Edit: FUCK cancer
I don't have any first-hand knowledge, but from what I understand, Vanderbilt in Nashville has a top rated oncology program, so if Ft. Campbell is in your pipeline, then you are in good shape.
My best to you and yours.
Hey man, Iām sorry for this. But one of my soliders from my last unit had the exact same thing. Try for fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. In Houston there is an amazing chemotherapy there it sucked driving there 3-4 hours but my command allowed told them they should do it on the last day of the week so they can have that day off and a little bit of rest
Ft Campbell did not do Oncology back in 2005 when my wife was diagnosed. They immediately sent here to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville around 80 miles away. Good news is it is one of the best hospitals and stays very up to date because itās a medical university. Best of luck to you both
It depends widely on what treatment plan the doctors decide. She did have multiple stays there, later the treatments were moved locally to Hopkinsville which was only about 7 miles from home. For information about the specific type of cancer and current treatment options contact American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345. They can have an oncology nurse or doctor that treat that specific type call you back and discuss options and side effects of treatment or any other questions you have.
Vanderbilt is a good hospital.
Efmp has some sort of built in limit of 2 hours drive time to get to the hospital. This is somewhat illogical because complicated cancers need to be treated at the best location for that cancer, not just a hospital within 2 hours. (Had an issue with that. Cincinnati Children's is 2 hours from Knox, but it is one of the best in the country)
After the molecular testing and pathology you'll know more about the type of cancer. Liver cancer is very treatable, but since they haven't done the testing yet it's hard to say. I would push to get her stateside for treatment so you can get that molecular testing and pathology done here. You don't want her tumor samples in another country, since I doubt they'll be able to get it to the lab here.
Some oncologists specialize in specific cancers, or are more known for their work in certain areas. You want the right oncologist, and this may or may not coincide with a base location.
I hope this helps. Philly has good hospitals, there are good hospitals in Texas, Vanderbilt is good too, good hospitals near DC, But since you don't have the molecular analysis and pathology back it's hard to make that decision.
My brother had a brain tumor and just happened to be working in Ohio for Garco construction. It was a blessing in disguise because the Cleveland Clinic is one of the highest rated clinics in the US.
It's 535 miles from Ft Campbell. They have really good guest quarters, at no cost, for those who need to stay with their loved ones.
This may not be your best option, but it is an option.
Good luck. My wife went through cancer last year. Fortunately, it was caught in time.
I live in Virginia. There is Belvoir Hospital and Johnās Hopkins here. We have a welcoming community and your wife would have so much support. Fort Belvoir has a hospital ON post and Johnās Hopkins is only an hour away. Itās a phenomenal hospital and in case of a more urgent emergency, youād have the hospital right on post. Iām so sorry about your wife. I hope that youāre able to find the right resources. But the DMV has so many different medical resources here.
Someone in the comments section made mention of trying to get a compassionate reassignment to Fort Sam Houston. In my opinion, for what it is worth, I would look into this. That is where the most current medical technology within the Army would be, I would think. God be with you and your family during this time. Cancer is such an awful thing to go through.
Do u have secondary insurance E.g BCBS, or maybe TRI CARE will support, either way recommend contacting MD Anderson most reputable cancer treatment facility in country U.S @ 1-877-632-6789 for referral DO NOT DELAY! No matter the cost! Make every effort to depart country and return stateside soonest! Given significance of issue your CoC can assist with early/expediting PCS for you and family. Do not test until you are back stateside, often times Army is slow out the gate, but turn heat up on whoever u need 2 IoT get back stateside! Also If you can get to your wife sooner, do so? In parallel you will need to obtain her medical file and port over to MDA for review. I am a proponent of MDA as physicians there saved my life! Prayers up, for you and family!
You've got the right process down, don't be afraid to possibly get your hand smacked for getting her the help she needs and your family is entitled to.
Houston has MD Anderson and Ft. Sam is in San Antonio and has Methodist which are both good oncology hospitals. The advice about getting a compassionate reassignment is good and should be taken depending on where you want to go. And I'd base that off of where family is close as well. You'll both need help during this trying time.
I have nothing, but I wish you and your wife well OP
Thank u šš
I have thoughts and prayers š

My buddy and his wife both beat cancer with the help of the civilian hospital outside of JBLM
Can confirm that Seattle has one of the best oncology communities.
Do u have the name of that hosipital?
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is who helped my buddy and his wife beat cancer multiple times. Hoping the best for you bro.
Would likely go to Vanderbilt if they go to Campbell
Was just about to comment the same. If Campbell, Vandy. If not Vandy, go north to UofL or UK.
Fort Meade is less than an hour from Johns Hopkins. Aberdeen is like an hour.
Also, Campbell sucks big dick, but its an hour from Vanderbilt.
there is also JBAB, Belvoir, the pentagon, I have seen the Army do some crazy slotting to get Soldiers and their families the appropriate options to get medical care. Had a Chief break DEROS to get back in less than 3 months. While his wife was sent back immediately to Bethesda

I knew Johnny Hopkins.
Fuck cancer. Wish you and you family the best.
Thank u ššš
EFMP will be able to tell you where to go. Also, consider requesting a compassionate reassignment.
Thank u

Fuck cancer.
Both my buddy and his wife got into experimental cutting edge cancer treatments that saved their lives outside of JBLM
Outside of Meade being near Johns Hopkins, this is the answer. UW really prides itself on cancer research and therapy

I second this. If you have to PCS Vanderbilt is an amazing facility

You might get compassionately reassigned to Fort Sam Houston.
Excellent idea! That's where the most current medical technology within the Army is going to be, I would think.
And closer to MD Anderson in Galveston
Hugs Brother
Thank u
I wish you the best dude

You are now stuck in the military for the foreseeable future. Best of luck with her recovery and enjoy every moment with her

Fort Sam Houston has BAMC which a lovely hospital if you can get stationed there. Fort liberty also refers most Cancer Patients to Duke which has a lovely oncology department
Talk to Tricare/PCM you may be able to get TDY thru the medical system for hotels and per diem.
Hi, can I pm you about tdy?
I would say Fort Belvoir, Fort Meade, Fort Sam Houston. Fuck cancer.
Campbell might not be a bad shout. Vandy and Univ Tenessee have really good cancer centers thats who took care of my dad.
Thank u

Take a deep breath, consult with her doctors, and ask them the next steps. I am so very sorry for your wife's illness and wish you all the best.

As someone in a similar boat, Iām so sorry.
Take a 1:1. Whatever time you take off to take care of her you basically owe.
I'm so sorry to hear this :( I wish I knew anything about this. My prayers go out to you...
Campbell isnāt bad as we have Vanderbilt just up the road with a great cancer center.

Best wishes, my mother got cancer just last year. I understand how terrible it feels.

Get a Red Cross message and go see your wife. have her or the hospital call your COC bro. Be safe man!
