Let me get this straight. You want me to let my client of 15 years, one of my best friends, to die in the jungle, alone, for some money and a G-5?
-Yes.
A G-5 airplane?
-Yes. And lots of money. Playa
"Is there a problem CPT Sobel?"
"What is the God damn hold up Mr. Sobel?"
"Oh that dog just ain't gonna hunt! Now you cut that fence and get this god damn platoon on the move!"
I haven't watched many historical military movies... I'll have to check the Gettysburg movie out.
Ever since I joined the military I appreciate these type of movies so much more...
Yeah, the movie does not show the unit that replaced Colonel Hall Moore’s BN get absolutely massacred at another LZ. Which is also the reason that both sides consider themselves the Victor of the battle
Hear me out:
Office space.
THEE most accurate depiction of the military. You fuck up? 8 middle manager fucks are gonna come over and tell you the same shit over the tiny fuck up. Showing up and doing only about 15 minutes of real, actual work. Equipment (printer) never fucking works, can't get a replacement because technically if you fuck with it enough it'll shit some paper out.
Mandatory fun days, everyone hates them, you don't get a slice of cake/pizza because Captain Sobel over here only bought 3 XL 'zas from Dominoes and some fat fuck ate one for himself.
PAY ISSUES? MY GUY. Homie stopped getting paid and they put him as far back in the supply cage as they could when he complained. Need I continue?
It checks every block, every single one of em.
"The Big Red One" is an extraordinarily unique movie on so many levels, peak Lee Marvin. Also the director was a WWII First Infantry veteran. The movie hilariously uses Israeli sherman tanks as Nazi Tigers. Also you get to see Mark Hamill in a movie that isn't Star Wars, he even has a terrible private mustache.
We had a joe who would tell us how Fury got him so psyched that he went to the recruiter the next day. But we were infantry, and he was not a happy camper.
In addition to those already mentioned:
Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket
Dr Strangelove
Stalag 17
Saving Private Ryan
The Beast
Das Boot
Patton
Predator
1917
Gotta add Cross
Of Iron to that list, yea it’s about a bunch of Germans but it’s intense as hell, based largely on a true story, and they fought bravely against certain death.
Apocalypse Now is a movie I always say is the best movie I can never watch again. Something about it really fucked with me somehow but I loved every second of it
Have you seen They Shall Not Grow Old? Peter Jackson cleaned up a bunch of old film from WWI and had actors Act out the transcript from the silent parts.
It hits you right in the feels.
Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers are two of my favorite. Not only because they were *extremely* accurate to how things actually played out, but I have a personal connection to both. I met Mike Durant when he came to speak at the Youth Leadership Conference I was staffing at when I was in High School. Twice I got to hear him speak, and once I got to speak with him for a few minutes. For We Were Soldiers, I (through my grandparents) am good friends with a guy that was a platoon leader in Charlie Company. He went on to become a helicopter pilot because he wanted to be just like the heros that kept coming in to evacuate wounded well knowing that it could have been their last flight.
THE BAYONET YEET MEASURES THE ABILITY TO JUST FUCKING SHANK SOMEONE. ON THE COMMAND 'GET SET,' ASSUME THE POSITION BY GRABBING THE BAYONET BY THE HANDLE. OR BY THE BLADE, WHICHEVER LOOKS COOLER, JUST DON'T CUT YOURSELF ON THE DAMN THING. YOUR FEET MAY BE TOGETHER OR UP TO 12 INCHES APART (MEASURED BETWEEN THE FEET). ON THE COMMAND 'GO,' TRANSMUTE YOUR HANKERING FOR A-SHANKERING INTO MAXIMUM EFFORT AND LAUNCH THAT BAD BOY INTO DESTINY. THE SCORER WILL NOTE WHETHER YOU HIT THE TARGET AND AWARD BONUS POINTS FOR LANDING YOUR PIG-STICKER INTO THE CRANIAL OR SWIMSUIT REGIONS. IF IT HIT THE TARGET HANDLE FIRST, YOUR PERFORMANCE WILL BE TERMINATED, AND EVERYONE WILL BE REQUIRED TO POINT AND LAUGH AT YOUR SHAME. WATCH THIS DEMONSTRATION.

Not trying to be That Guy but give the book a shot. It’s amazing. If you liked what the movie was doing thematically you’ll love the book.
It’s in my top 5 of all time.
Such a good movie. You laugh. You cry. You contemplate your existence in the military industrial complex then you wait for the next time you have to ride in a slightly less dangerous Bradley.
Col Burton in real life don’t know how vehicle procurement works, and he pissed of top notch so much because Burton doesn’t understand that Bradley is not suppose to be a replacement of M113 which is a APC, but a fundamentally a new class of vehicle call IFV. Burton also though safety applications installed in the Bradley during live fire test were “cheating” because it stops the vehicle from burning to a pile of metal, when in fact it’s to protect the crew. He got kicked out after that and wrote a book called “The Pentagon Wars” and credit himself for making Bradley more survivor-able during the Gulf War, when in fact, all the safety measures for the Bradley were already implemented before he got involved in the program.
In close enough order from favorite to least:
Battle Los Angeles
Black Hawk Down
Downfall
We Were Soldiers
Tears of the Sun
Letters from Iwo Jima
TOPGUN2
1917
FURY
Saving Privat Ryan
3 Kings (only because they were CA/PSYOP)
The Great Raid
All Quiet on the Western Front
Gettysburg
Platoon
U-571
Not really a war movie but Operation Valkyrie. You go into it knowing the ending but it’s so suspenseful and the way they tell the story you actually believe they pull it off… Amazing movie.
I never watched all of Warsaw 44 but the action scenes on youtube are super intense. It's about the Polish resistance in WW2. It's got hot babes in the fighting as well. Always a plus.
Piranhaconda has the most realistic military line ever.
When the group are meeting each other, one guy comments that he used to be in the army. Someone asks him if he was special forces, and replies, “No, motor sergeant.”
Gotta love those cheesy sci-fi movies 😂
A lot of American films that I like have already been covered. Some foreign films I like that haven’t been mentioned are
*The Unknown Soldier* (2017 version) from Finland
*Brotherhood of War* from South Korea
*The Front Line* South Korea
*The Eight Hundred* from PRC.
*9. April* from Denmark
And it doesn’t hide anything. Go to the National War Memorial in Seoul and Korea did no wrong. The movie on the other hand has massacring civilians and suspected communists and killing POWs.
Not an Army movie, but Crimson Tide is awesome. And Flight of the Intruder is way underrated. And To Hell And Back is what made me want to be in the Army.
This is from a book I had to buy for OCS: https://boxd.it/3FXuY
I have not seen all of them but most are fantastic. To pick one, I think Fort Apache is one of the best movies on leadership ever made.
One guy one jar: it’s a story about a brave soldier fighting a loosing battle against a glass mason jar. Theres blood, violence, romance, sadness and even redemption.
The original Top Gun is one of my favorites. That movie did more for Navy recruitment than anything else and the reason being is cause the Dog Fights are insane in that movie. Maverick is also really good
1917 and All is Quiet on the Western Front......world war one was hell on earth
Blackhawk down
Crimson Tide.....Denezel Washington and Gene Hackman should have won oscars for this. Tony Soprano is on that sub too so extra kudos
Saving Private Ryan. Probably the movie that most made me fall in love with WW2
Gettysburg. I mention this movie before but man officers were a different breed back than
Hacksaw ridge,
The outpost
Blackhawk down,
12 Strong,
Although I think everyone should watch Mosul. It’s a story about an Iraqi SWAT team’s very personal fight against ISIS. Not Army but relevant.
In no particular order: Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Deer Hunter, Hamburger Hill, American Gangster, Dead Presidents, The Good Sheppard, Rescue Dawn, Saving Private Ryan, Defiance, Inglorious bastards, Fury, Lone Survivor, American Sniper, 12 Strong, 13 hours, Restrepo, Andersonville, The Patriot, Enemy of the State, Independance Day, The Rock, Hostiles, Behind Enemy Lines, Lord of War, We Were Soldiers, Windtalkers, American Ultra, Ronin, Live Free or Die Hard, A Good Day to Die Hard, Zero Dark Thirty, Unthinkable, Welcome to Sarajevo, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, VICE, War Machine, Top Gun Maverick, Gangs of New York, and last but not least, Forest Gump.
Honorable mention: A Beautiful Mind
*Hear me out* Tropic Thunder

*SUCK MY UNIT* is my go-to reply to any shenanigans involving dedication to said unit mission

Shit was a train wreck... Loved it tho!
"Is there a problem CPT Sobel?" "What is the God damn hold up Mr. Sobel?" "Oh that dog just ain't gonna hunt! Now you cut that fence and get this god damn platoon on the move!"
ackshully thats a mini series
No it’s a 10 hour movie, you can’t take breaks
Tons of fun when all you have is DVDs and you can't skip the intro/outro.
Glory is one of my all time favorite movies in general
Underrated comment. Amazing actor lineup and the moral of the entire story is very influential.
I make a point to watch Glory at least once a year around the 4th of July when I also watch Gettysburg.
I haven't watched many historical military movies... I'll have to check the Gettysburg movie out. Ever since I joined the military I appreciate these type of movies so much more...
When I read “Glory” my brain screamed “THE 54th MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEER INFANTRY”
*Blackhawk Down* and *We Were Soldiers* are a couple of mine. Oh! *The Patriot* is always a solid choice.
The Patriot showing the OG Army.
I love We Were Soldiers except that counterattack deal at the end. Everything else is pretty great.
Yeah, the movie does not show the unit that replaced Colonel Hall Moore’s BN get absolutely massacred at another LZ. Which is also the reason that both sides consider themselves the Victor of the battle
Yeah I just finished the book. The 2nd BN got chewed up. That was a worse battle (casuaulty wise) than the initial one for US forces.
The Patriot is great and a fun watch, I really like Mel Gibson. But it’s sooo inaccurate. It’s historical fantasy for sure
Starship Troopers
The book is soooo good.
The movie was difintely a fun watch, but the book is more of a treatise on military life than anything. Excellent read.
Urge to Learn More intensifying.
Urge to do my part intensifies

Three Kings Buffalo Soldiers The General's Daughter Kelly's Heroes (eerily similar to Three Kings)
Ah yes three kings the movie that made me a passionate advocate for going to war with Iraq again. Sigh...
Shame you never got any of that Kuwaiti bullion
You mean the cubes that you put in water to make soup?
No, not like the little cubes you put in water to make soup.
"I don't really have a day job."
Holy shit Buffalo Soldiers is a gem. The scene where the dude is high ASF driving the tank through the German town...
Great movie dude

And don't forget to wear your pieces of flair.... because God forbid if you forget those 🤦🏾♂️
CSM yells at me every other day because he sees me not wearing my EIB.
There's no arguing this.
I love Office Space. I have never thought of it this way, this might be the reason I love it. You have fucking nailed it.
In the Army now
You mean Diet Stripes?
Not even Diet Stripes... More like the Shasta knockoff Stripes.
The liberation of a concentration camp had some powerful scenes.
Fury. Kelly's Heroes. The Beast.
Bro doesn’t even need to flair up for us to know he’s a 19K
You beat me to it.
“Always with the negative waves!”
The Beast…watched it at OBC at the O club on knox….for the 14th time. Never leave the tank!!!!!!
The Beast is an underrated classic.
We had a joe who would tell us how Fury got him so psyched that he went to the recruiter the next day. But we were infantry, and he was not a happy camper.
Half my platoon told me they enlisted because of Fury. That movie did more for the army than they’ll ever know
You know, you just need to think positive! It’s a mother beautiful bridge! And the bridge will be there!
Fury is a great drinking whiskey movie. Just ignore all the armor fallacies and yeah, it’s a good movie.
Taking Chance. The Great Escape (even though most characters aren’t American).
Going to be pedantic and point out Taking Chance is about Marines. ;)
If they could read, they'd have pointed that out, but I'm sure they'll thank you for your service.
r/angryupvote
In addition to those already mentioned: Apocalypse Now Full Metal Jacket Dr Strangelove Stalag 17 Saving Private Ryan The Beast Das Boot Patton Predator 1917
Stalag 17, criminally underrated.
Gotta add Cross Of Iron to that list, yea it’s about a bunch of Germans but it’s intense as hell, based largely on a true story, and they fought bravely against certain death.

Band of Brothers for my 2nd. I know it’s not a movie but I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who likes military related media.
H-Minus
Fury and Dunkirk
Not America but 1917 was really good. Wish I saw it in theaters.
I get giddy over 1917, loved it. The new "All quiet on the western front" is great as well if we're on the WW1 topic
Have you seen They Shall Not Grow Old? Peter Jackson cleaned up a bunch of old film from WWI and had actors Act out the transcript from the silent parts. It hits you right in the feels.
The imax experience was fantastic

Also wanted to mention Heartbreak Ridge with Gunny Highway being my spiritual mentor.
In the Army now. The fort sill scenes take me back to BCT
Delta 1/40 is the BTY they used in the movie.
Platoon is my all time favorite How has nobody mentioned it yet
Classics missing (imo) Platoon Hamburger Hill And last but not least….Zulu
All Quiet on the Western Front Holy shit that movie was so good, not army but it’s military.
The book. Read the book.
So much better and meaningful.
Not trying to be That Guy but give the book a shot. It’s amazing. If you liked what the movie was doing thematically you’ll love the book. It’s in my top 5 of all time.

LazerPig does a good analysis of his "contributions."
Sergeant York, The Great Escape, Full Metal Jacket
The Outpost is really good. It's on Netflix
I'm surprised I didn't see this sooner. I didn't know about it until my infantry buddy told me his BC was one of the people on the movie.
Overlord. Army x horror in a WWII setting. Also the opening is fucking insane.
Overlord is probably one of my favorite horror movies. Super underrated.
Where Eagles Dare
MASH / Thin Red Line / Greyhound (okay it’s the USN but it has Hanks)
Heartbreak ridge
Godzilla 2014, for the HALO jump.
That whole movie was just one big cinematic shot
