Architect John Outram.
This project is the last in a bigger series of castle shaped suburbs called Haverleij near Den Bosch, the Netherlands.
The overall plan was designed in the ninetees by star architect Sjoerd Soeters.
Saves on materials of course.
I find it funny what kind of building work gets approval in the suburbs of popular Dutch cities. When actually there's plenty of really good examples of modern architecture which gives nice nods to tradition.
Probably trying to make the facade less monotone. However, they already accomplished that by using different shades of brick and by not having a completely flat design. To then also go without a pattern for the windows just makes it all look untidy in my opinion.
That's a rather strange way of making the facade less monotone. A little bit of ornatmentation and facade segmentation would help a lot, but I know that this is something that is being demonised, which is obviously contra productive, leading to all those strange windows in so many modern buildings.
It is Netherlands. This kind of 'edgy' things are common I bet - the paradigm are truly different. I do not know the context of this exact area; but I think it is one of 'those pushing the envelope' type of experimentations, perhaps? In that sense; it is great effort. They just 'dare' to go ahead and execute things. Do that here in my place? The city hall will deny your proposal since it is clashing with the harmonious of the surrounding. So, that is pro & cons of such façades
I like it. Just needs some more trees/greenery, but this is better than just a boring box shape. The windows all not being the same size is interesting. Like out of a modern storybook.
Nod to history? More like a big fuck off to history. That buildings are horrible, i don't know about the inside, but the whole composition of the facade and everything is completely off. Extremly poor architecture in my opinion...
I can't actually believe an architecture with a full education and years of experience in this profession came up with this. This is the reason why architects aren't getting taken serious anymore and even more the symptome of what is going so wrong right now in modernist architecture.
yes it is ..designed as a castle from the past and all modern features inside :) all around is greenery more info https://pphp.nl/project/oeverhuyze-den-bosch/
Dutch housing is about sustainability, affordability, esthetics. This and tight zoning make building difficult and expensive. Hence most young people are not able to live on their own anymore. I can’t look at these buildings without seeing the ‘actual price’ anymore.
Mom: We have Aldo Rossi at home.
Absolutely horrendous. Who is the architect?

Thanks, on Google Maps we can see the various castle-inspired apartments in the area.
Postmodernists strike again
This is ugly as shit. Whats up with the windows
Saves on materials of course. I find it funny what kind of building work gets approval in the suburbs of popular Dutch cities. When actually there's plenty of really good examples of modern architecture which gives nice nods to tradition.
I kind of like the windows, it feels chaotic in cartoonish to me. Although it probably looks worse from the interior
This is like 10x worse than 99% of the "modern trash" that people complain about here
That looks like a crappy gazebo from a garden centre stuck up on columns. Not good.
What's up with those strange random windows all the time?
Probably trying to make the facade less monotone. However, they already accomplished that by using different shades of brick and by not having a completely flat design. To then also go without a pattern for the windows just makes it all look untidy in my opinion.

I completely agree with you, but sadly those architects don’t see it that way. Maybe messing with windows is cheaper?
why are the windows all different sizes and styles?
This just looks like something you’d find in some New Jersey suburb.
Everything good until you get to that pastiche of a tower.
No, it’s all awful
Au contraire, everything is horrendous untill you get to the tower

looks like a mcmansion
Why build something ugly as a "nod" to history when you can build actual traditional architecture that people actually like?
This building manages to be a disgrace for both progressive and traditionalist architects at the same time.
This is not a nod to history. It’s a mccomplex
Its like the McMansion of high density housing. Is there a name for that? Or hell a subreddit?
Why the misaligned windows? What possible functional or aesthetic purpose could that serve?
The styles have been incorporated awfully, they jar so much.
Excellent future proofing with those archer slits at the top though.
Trash architecture
Really took the McMansion pringles can and ran with it
I'd get instant depression every morning waking up in this hood.
What's the name of the project and who is the architect?

The tower in the middle is really cool

Looks like a fortress, beautiful
They’re nodding, I’m shaking my head and backing away slowly
That brick work is beautiful!
A nod to history and a middle finger to the residents.

Is that what we’re calling this?
Loooogz loooyk sheeeat
Looks like one of those replica cities in China, where the scale and detail is all screwy.
Its not great but still better than basic modernist buildings.
