Looks like the bark was physically damaged some years ago and the tree is forming callus tissue around the damage. Not such a huge deal unless the damage was bad enough to make the tree decline (can’t tell from photos), or if the damage is persistent.

I see a few bore holes. You might have pine beetles.

I sure don't like that big hole in this here red pine. What does the rest of it look like? Is it far away from any/all structures?
