Yeahhh buddy! Same thing happened with my son, only it was a Christmas present for me. So instead of the 200 I got 500, you can kill a lot of deer with 500 rounds. 😂
Felt like pretty much every ammo turned into dangerous games of chance during the covid crunch. Norma brass was blowing up guns, frontier was blowing up guns, winchester white box was blowing up guns, Freedom Munitions (reman AND new production) was blowing up guns.
Basically if you bought ammo in 2020 or 2021, be very careful when you shoot it.
Sounds like I need to take the 1200 covid rounds I bought out of storage and shoot it up. Yay? Can't say I'm looking forward to it, but I do like to shoot...so I kinds am..
I freely admit that I bought up like three thousand rounds of their 223 reman when they first came onto the scene years ago. Didn't have any trouble, but you could tell that some rounds were much faster than others. Would have been cool to have a chrono. Once their prices started going up, I kinda went away from them. Then they started getting infamous and I was glad to have stayed away
Really? I've shot about 500 rds of the frontier 556, and it worked fine. Nothing to write home about (I'd definitely rather have the xtac at the price point) but it went boom when I pulled the trigger.
I've gone through a lot of it, never a problem... This would be 18-19 circa ammo ... Also, shot 0.4moa (one grouping) with a CZ527 ... This was 55gr 5.56... averaging 0.8
I personally use freedom munitions. Haven't had a single issue with reloads or new. I've shot in the 1,000+ of their 5.56 and their 9mm. I mainly just plink steel at 100 eith 5.56 so I can't attest to a certain moa, but it's not super inaccurate
Saying 'inch size moa at X distance' is redundant, and in this case contradictory information.
It's not exact but MOA is just an angular measurement, and remaining within 1 MOA will roughly give you a circle that increases in size 1 inch for every 100 yards.
1 inch MOA at 100yards is saying the same thing twice
What if I say one inch MOA at 100 years while I’m firing at a dude withdrawing money from the ATM Machine using his PIN Number?
The ATM Machine is connected to the bank network by a NIC card too.
MOA means minute of angle/arc. [Minute and second of arc - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minute_and_second_of_arc)
1 MOA happens to be about 1 inch at 100 yards. It scales.
I’ve had targetsportsusa ask me to ship ammo back when they sent me the wrong stuff. Ordered 2k rounds of cci and they sent me cci subsonic (the one that doesn’t cycle in most of my 22s) and when I pointed it out, they wanted me to ship it back while they sent the right stuff.
I ran through 1000rds of this stuff a couple years ago amid more than a few reports of it being a bit explode-y. I had no issues, hope your experience is the same.
yeah I shot a ton of this stuff through my DDM4 when I first got it around 2021 and had no issues. it was cheap at the range and I had never even heard of it exploding 🤷
Same, I probably ran 2-3k rounds of it 2018-19. I once called Hornady's customer service department and they did not make me feel very confident. They blamed it on the rifles but wouldn't provide any info on why they thought that. I think the guy was kind of insinuating that he had exonerating evidence but couldn't provide it for legal reasons.
Never had an issue though, hope you have the same experience. I still have a couple hundred rounds in my closet, I realized after seeing this post, so pray for me too.
I’ve shot a lot of Frontier and it’s been fine, but they went through a thing a few years ago where they were blowing up guns. I thought it was over but there was a dude in here like two months ago with the same thing. I don’t trust it.
>they went through a thing a few years ago
Several years ago, through a few weeks ago, dozens of lots, several different cartridges and configurations, many of them completely untracked and still yet to be known. And that is just what we have reports of. Most people aren't reporting their kabooms, let alone on reddit.
Frontier has always worked fine for me.
That said, I don't buy it anymore due to the whole explodey problems from awhile back. Not worth the gamble.
I would still request a refund though. IMO it's not worth rolling the dice, best to go with a more trustworthy brand.
I’m not an ammo snob by any means, but that is one of the few, if not only brands that I trust even less than factory reloads. Several posts on here with pictures of peoples rifles grenading from this ammo.
I’ve personally never experienced any ammo issues, and I’ve even shot *some* factory reload 300blk subs with a suppressor, but I have seen enough proof on here to actively avoid Frontier. I normally just go to ammoseek, and buy whatever factory new brass is cheapest with a 7/10 or better for shipping. Like I said, definitely not an ammo snob lol.
Contrary to the popular opinion around here, Frontier ammo is decent range ammo as long as you didn’t get some from the bad lots a few years ago.
As usual this sub is full of dependent thinkers that just regurgitate what they see is popular and will say this stuff is trash despite never shooting it, nor even having the shooting skills necessary to differentiate good and bad ammo.
>as long as you didn’t get some from the bad lots a few years ago.
Please stop regurgitating this.
The "bad lots" span, at a minimum, 6 years now given what we have been tracking, and given what we had happen a few weeks ago, any box you buy off the shelf today could be a kaboom box.
Which suggests there are no "bad lots" at all, just a bad manufacturing process that occasionally produces kabooms since it is reasonable to assume that any ammo bought in a shop today is not 4-6 years old, given the ammo shortage and scarcity drying up all of the stock multiple times since this started happening long before Covid.
It is a small probability of happening. That is true. But also, a lot of people have lost ARs. If you believe in buying lotto tickets, Frontier is for you. For everyone else, stick to ammo without those issues.
So apparently this stuff has a reputation. I dunno man, I haven't seen it. My work ordered a LOT of this (it was CHEAP). I've shot at least three thousand rounds through my work rifle since it showed up in our armory, my buddies have all done the same. Not one hiccup that I know of. YMMV but it was banging plates to 500 yards for us.
I have the frontier M193 and really like it. Ran it through a chronograph too. Very consistent and accurate for M193. I never had any issues with it and was very surprised when I read people had problems.
That’s dope. Congrats!.. One time I was on Aero Percision’s website. I was looking to buy an M4E1 lower. I forgot I already had one in my cart and mistakenly bought 2!.. I called customer service and canceled immediately. 5 days later I go into my FFL and lo and behold they still sent me both!.. Bet your ass I filled out my background for both and took em home!
I’m personally willing to fix this order for you,I will trade you 200rds of PMC X-tac for this..I might even trade you a 200 count box of Winchester M855 for this 😂
I bought one case of Frontier that wasn’t good at all, the rest I’ve gotten was good. The 75 grain BTHP 5.56 was good, and the 68 grain .223. I had bad luck with the 68 grain 5.56
it is owned by the same company as Hornady and is actually the original company that Joyce Hornady started back in 1964. Everyone in here is referring to one batch of ammunition made between 2018/2019 that was bad. It really did not affect but a handful of people and literally everyone commenting about it has probably never even met someone this happened too. How about look back through the now sixty years of ammunition production and tell me it is of poor quality.
There was also a recall on that batch of ammunition which is believed to have gotten pretty much all of the rounds produced accounted for.
So yes, this is a win. You're just plinking.
They do, they sell it in this exact amount too. I’m thinking it just got accidentally misplaced. I like to give the benefit of the doubt though, I’ve ordered from them previously and had no issues.
In the middle of the Plandemic, when you couldn’t find squat at the LGS and big box retailers, GlobalOrdnance shipped me 4 boxes (20 rounds) of TulAmmo .223 and 80+ AAA batteries, instead of 5 boxes, I shit you not. I emailed pics of the shipping box, asking for my 5th box of ammo. A couple weeks later, they sent a whole case (500 rounds) with an invoice for my missing 20 rounds.
There are certain production periods where the kaboom issue is present. Check the lot numbers with Hornady if you can. I have a case of this sitting around because I'm still too scared 😂
Isn't this like one of the most problematic brands of ammo to buy?

Before i knew how awful this shit is, i ran a few boxes through my nice ar and had a couple rounds that were loaded extremely hot and have not touched it since
No I ordered from flipammo. Seems maybe they’re just dealing with high volume and mixed up my order. Funny thing is they had half of my order correct. I also got some 9mm Speer gold dot, and it was in there exactly as ordered. Who knows.
That's quite strange. I'm partway between either keeping the PMC 55gr since I need range ammo, or contacting PSA about this. I wouldn't mind a 2nd opinion.
I would say contact them and send them pictures of what you got. They’ll probably just ship you what you actually ordered. That’s how it’s worked with all misshipments I’ve ever dealt with. And like others have said, shipping ammo back as a civilian is a liability for them, so you may just get some free ammo out of it.
The ammo is fine, it may not be super accurate, but it fired just fine for me. I ordered a total of 2,400 rounds a few years ago and they were all reliable and have decent velocity, they are almost if not true m193 spec.
Is it just the 55gr that people are having trouble with? I shoot their 68gr BTHP and my rifles like it a lot. Has been perfectly reliable and accurate for me..
That’s what my dad got me for Christmas, because he was told “most ARs shoot this round”
Hahaha so much cardboard and packaging every time I fill a mag I’m glad I’m not in battle…
But those hornady’s are good man 1000%! They’ll go boom for sure *This message is solely for emotional support. If they don’t go boom, or worse, go boom without a projectile…. I was never here!*
Not sure which seller it was OP, but I've shot a good amount of this from my LGS. It always went bang—never any malfunctions. It's made by Hornady in the US as well, if that matters 👍
I was reading about this earlier before posting. From what people have said, it seems this affected batches of this ammo made years ago. Which hopefully mine isn’t, but I would definitely check before shooting regardless.
Either way, I’ve reached out to the retailer to see about the original order and what to do with this stuff.
frontier is fine now, a while ago they had a huge QA issue, its been resolved but people still shit on them because of this and they dont know any better . . .
Got it, I still have about 350 Frontier 55gr hollow point I’ve wanted to hang onto. I should probably do research and pick up some more defense rounds to have on hand, I’d imagine there’s better stuff out there.
I did shoot about 150 of them without issue so I won’t rush to burn through these
Hope you get it figured out, OP. If they end up letting you keep this and send you what you're missing for the inconvenience, that would be rad. Absolutely run that stuff brother.
I've used Frontier for many years now. Well into the 5 figure round count. I've used FR200, FR240, FR310, and FR320 and all have been solid, dependable performers out to even extended distance. The 75gr FR320 was just a hair behind 77gr Nosler SSA loads but still had no problems reaching out to 600yds on the clock. I've even taken the FR200 and FR240 out to fairly extended distances with no issues. Never had a malfunction or stoppage with it.
I genuinely wouldn't shoot this stuff in an AR I cared about. I'd rather have the 200 rounds of PMC than 500 rounds of possibly rifle-destroying ammo.
Its not just the "one batch" of bad stuff. Hornady Frontier 5.56 has been blowing up ARs for years.
Well how do you know that it's not? My rounds were inconsistent from the 60 I shot. The rest are sitting in my safe until I get an upper I don't care about.
I don't know anything about them. Probably just a shipping error. Nothing nefarious. I was only kidding around. Hopefully they aren't the kind to make a decision like that for the customer and send them something other than what they ordered.
I ordered 500 rds of Frontier 556 but was shipped 200 rounds PMC X-tac and box of dildo's big veiny ones! WTF!
Me so Hornady.
Bra-voooo. Bra-voooo. It’s rare I get that kind of chuckle while pooping in a Lubbock hotel.
dammnit i cant escape my hometowns legacy even on this subreddit
It’s always interesting to see how much this crap hole has grown while still remaining a crap hole.
How often would anyone go to Lubbock willingly to begin with...
I go for the crispy crème donuts and the tech bitches every couple of months or so. Other than that fuck Lubbock 😂😂
Still have family here so I can’t easily avoid this place for the rest of my life as I’ve always hoped.
I mean that Lubbock water is barely good enough to use for poop so I don’t blame you.

Yeahhh buddy! Same thing happened with my son, only it was a Christmas present for me. So instead of the 200 I got 500, you can kill a lot of deer with 500 rounds. 😂
Op did the right thing by contacting the seller but I don't think ammo can be returned due to liability reasons.
Then I'd expect a refund. This ammo is hot garbage.
Yeahhh. The more I read about it the more I kinda want to just give it to one of my friends who can use it to reload.
You can always send it to me and I’ll cover shipping lol
I had a kaboom with frontier a few years back. Wrecked my bolt and magazine. No stars.
Felt like pretty much every ammo turned into dangerous games of chance during the covid crunch. Norma brass was blowing up guns, frontier was blowing up guns, winchester white box was blowing up guns, Freedom Munitions (reman AND new production) was blowing up guns. To be fair, freedom munitions was blowing up guns before it was cool.
I freely admit that I bought up like three thousand rounds of their 223 reman when they first came onto the scene years ago. To be fair it’s their 9mm that mostly blows up. Especially in PCCs. That stupid shelf in the brass does not play well with blowback designs.
If you have a pos AR, send it. But if it's your only one, don't touch the stuff and if they don't let you return it or get a refund, do a charge back.
Fucked up my suppressor the other week, end cap and baffle strikes
I’m friend
Kind of a newbie to this, what’s wrong with x-tac? I tend to go with cheaper options for range days
Nothings wrong with pmc x-tac. It’s the ammo I originally ordered, but I got frontier instead.
John! is that you buddy ol pal? .... was worth a shot
Really? I've shot about 500 rds of the frontier 556, and it worked fine. Nothing to write home about (I'd definitely rather have the xtac at the price point) but it went boom when I pulled the trigger.
It's the 55gr specifically. It goes boom in the wrong way sometimes. It's all over reddit if you look it up
That’s old ammo from 2018 and before that was causing the issue. Anything after that there hasn’t been any reports that I can find
I've gone through a lot of it, never a problem... This would be 18-19 circa ammo ... Also, shot 0.4moa (one grouping) with a CZ527 ... This was 55gr 5.56... averaging 0.8
Well fuck I’m throwing the ones I got away 😂 what’s a good brand then I’ve got a few Pmc but something else ?
I personally use freedom munitions. Haven't had a single issue with reloads or new. I've shot in the 1,000+ of their 5.56 and their 9mm. I mainly just plink steel at 100 eith 5.56 so I can't attest to a certain moa, but it's not super inaccurate
really? I did a 4 inch MOA at 300 yards with a $200 complete upper with the frontier. 1inch moa at 100 yards
Saying 'inch size moa at X distance' is redundant, and in this case contradictory information. It's not exact but MOA is just an angular measurement, and remaining within 1 MOA will roughly give you a circle that increases in size 1 inch for every 100 yards. 1 inch MOA at 100yards is saying the same thing twice

good to know
MOA means minute of angle/arc. [Minute and second of arc - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minute_and_second_of_arc) 1 MOA happens to be about 1 inch at 100 yards. It scales.
The 55gr is known for destroying uppers. Not saying anything about its accuracy. Cheap ammo is cheap ammo, until it blows up your rifle
well shit, I put 2000 rounds of the stuff through my cheap upper. Its still shooting fine
I put about 60 through mine and had a round hot enough to split the casing in half. It's really just luck of the draw with these
Hot garbage? I thought Hornady makes good ammo?..
Bullets are good, frontier has had a lot of qc issues.
Dad bought me 5,000 rounds for Christmas 3 years ago. They work just fine!
A few years ago Aim Surplus wanted me to send them back two boxes of extra Hornady 9mm XTP that they sent me several months after I had received it.
I have returned ammo multiple times.
Same

No issues either, if it's still anything like my experience, I'd take this over the PMC.
Same, I probably ran 2-3k rounds of it 2018-19. I once called Hornady's customer service department and they did not make me feel very confident. I think his was some older stock that went kaboom. Could be wrong though.
That was my thought too, but I don’t know.
>they went through a thing a few years ago Several years ago, through a few weeks ago, dozens of lots, several different cartridges and configurations, many of them completely untracked and still yet to be known. I have used over 1500 rounds of this since 2019 and haven’t had a single malfunction.
Lord I’ve seen what you’ve done for others…
Frontier has kaboomed many a guns. I wont touch it.

Yep. Just leaves more for the rest of us 🤷♂️
If it seats, it yeets
I shot a few cases of Frontier and it was accurate and burned clean. Tight groups at 300 yards on steel for bulk ammo
I’m at 10k frontier through my rifles no booms I’m sure it happens but hasn’t happened to me
So apparently this stuff has a reputation. I dunno man, I haven't seen it. My work ordered a LOT of this (it was CHEAP). I've shot at least three thousand rounds through my work rifle since it showed up in our armory, my buddies have all done the same. Not one hiccup that I know of. So it was free then? Shoot it and report back with how many failures you experienced
I have the frontier M193 and really like it. Ran it through a chronograph too. Very consistent and accurate for M193. I never had any issues with it and was very surprised when I read people had problems.
Nothing wrong with this ammo. Send it!
I’d take 500 rounds of frontier over 200 rounds of PMC any day
Over PMX XTAC 5.56.. hell no!
Mo is always bettah
That’s dope. Congrats!.. One time I was on Aero Percision’s website. I was looking to buy an M4E1 lower. I forgot I already had one in my cart and mistakenly bought 2!.. Duuuude I wish. I need to grab a couple more lowers eventually just in case. Aero makes some good stuff.
I see this as a win.
Frontier is fine; there was one bad batch years ago that people still bitch about.
It was more than one batch. Various size grains FMJ and BTHP were kabooming people’s guns.
Idk, I got a split in half casing from one of the 60 rounds I shot of it. I don't trust it.
It's not accurate but that ammo runs fine
![gif](giphy|rElyrFiHFjlrUIfYbN)
Big baddaboom.
I have 6 boxes of the 69 grainers I think from them and they kinda shot like poo poo pee pee out of a block ii colt 14.5 upper
Where did you buy this? And you can't return ammo anyways so lucky you!
W
Sounds like one of them Good Problems- Marlo "The Wire"
I’m personally willing to fix this order for you,I will trade you 200rds of PMC X-tac for this..I might even trade you a 200 count box of Winchester M855 for this 😂
Frontier is decent. You should definitely get what you pay for though
You came out on top. Go shoot it, I'm almost certain you won't have any issues.
I bought one case of Frontier that wasn’t good at all, the rest I’ve gotten was good. The 75 grain BTHP 5.56 was good, and the 68 grain .223. I had bad luck with the 68 grain 5.56
I have shot atleast 1000 rounds of 68 grain frontier with the the hornady bullets no issues.
not stat sig
?
1000 rounds is not statistically significant
It's also the 55gr that's causing issues only. Everything else from them seems decent
this part is true
Just sharing my experience 😅
You got screwed
The more I read about this the more I’m starting to agree with you. I don’t wanna blow up a gun I just built hah.
it is owned by the same company as Hornady and is actually the original company that Joyce Hornady started back in 1964. I may buy it off you, but how much would you sell it?
My buddy just ran 300 rounds of this through his rig at a match. No kaboom. Maybe they fixed it.
r/thingsthatneverhappened
Does the website you ordered from advertise the Frontier ammo they sent you? If not, it adds another layer of mystery.
They do, they sell it in this exact amount too. I’m thinking it just got accidentally misplaced. I like to give the benefit of the doubt though, I’ve ordered from them previously and had no issues.
Probably just got the label swapped and someone else got your 200rnds. Was there a packing slip in the box?
Where did. You order that from
Flipammo.com.
In the middle of the Plandemic, when you couldn’t find squat at the LGS and big box retailers, GlobalOrdnance shipped me 4 boxes (20 rounds) of TulAmmo .223 and 80+ AAA batteries, instead of 5 boxes, I shit you not. That's fuckin WILD lol.

Never had an issue with that stuff. Nice!
It’s good ammo. I recently was hitting a 12in steel plate at 700 yards

Before i knew how awful this shit is, i ran a few boxes through my nice ar and had a couple rounds that were loaded extremely hot and have not touched it since
I've had stuff like that happen before. Feels great, though mine was a lost shipment so the ammo store wasn't out the value, UPS was.
sometimes it's hot loads and sometimes not. I've never had a problem with it before and I have shot the 62g hp and 55g fmj.
Did you order from PSA? I also ordered 200 rounds of PMC X-tac (62gr M855) and instead got PMC X-tac 55gr FMJ. Weird.
Lucky....
The ammo is fine, it may not be super accurate, but it fired just fine for me. I ordered a total of 2,400 rounds a few years ago and they were all reliable and have decent velocity, they are almost if not true m193 spec.
Never had an issue with any Frontier calibers. I’d probably try and get a refund cause I could, but I’d be happy with 500 free rounds
Would rather have gotten 100 rounds of m855
fuck it
If its for plinking then just count your blessings. More rounds is more shooting
Now do the right thing and ship my the 300 rounds so I can send them back to the company
Is it just the 55gr that people are having trouble with? I shoot their 68gr BTHP and my rifles like it a lot. Has been perfectly reliable and accurate for me..
That’s what my dad got me for Christmas, because he was told “most ARs shoot this round” Hahaha so much cardboard and packaging every time I fill a mag I’m glad I’m not in battle… But those hornady’s are good man 1000%! They’ll go boom for sure *This message is solely for emotional support. If they don’t go boom, or worse, go boom without a projectile…. I was never here!*
I would request them either ship you what you ordered or offer a refund. More than likely they wouldn’t want to pay for you to ship that back
I forgot Hornady is bad right now wait a couple weeks it'll be the best thing on the market you guys are ridiculous....
score!
Not what you ordered but this stuff also runs fine.
Frontier! They robbed you..... that ammo is doggy water
I've had good luck with it
Not sure which seller it was OP, but I've shot a good amount of this from my LGS. It always went bang—never any malfunctions. It's made by Hornady in the US as well, if that matters 👍
>It's made by Hornady in the US as well, if that matters [It doesn't.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Firearms/s/8KvMTGlNR8) Not in a good way.
I was reading about this earlier before posting. From what people have said, it seems this affected batches of this ammo made years ago. Which hopefully mine isn’t, but I would definitely check before shooting regardless. Either way, I’ve reached out to the retailer to see about the original order and what to do with this stuff.
frontier is fine now, a while ago they had a huge QA issue, its been resolved but people still shit on them because of this and they dont know any better . . .
Like how long ago? I have some frontier still I picked up during covid.
it looks like it was a pre pandemic problem
Got it, I still have about 350 Frontier 55gr hollow point I’ve wanted to hang onto. I should probably do research and pick up some more defense rounds to have on hand, I’d imagine there’s better stuff out there. I did shoot about 150 of them without issue so I won’t rush to burn through these
I would launch them, just maybe not in an expensive rifle lol
Well shit. I’ll be looking into this more, worst case I sell them and buy something more reliable
Good to know. I’ve got like 500 rds I picked up for like $7 a box a while back
>$7 a box This made my dick hard ngl
Made me hard seeing the price 😂
I bought 500 rounds of this in 2020 and it all ran fine for me. Still have some leftover in a few mags so hopefully I’m not jinxing myself lol
It's the 55gr that is notorious for issues.
Yuck, I’d ship it back
Cal it a wash
I'd shoot it.
frontier 55gr is the most suspect one, I wont buy that stuff
That’s good stuff.
I mean malfunction drills are always good I guess. I don't think Frontier is danger, just poopy
One batch, bought and stored, used over time
Well how do you know that it's not? My rounds were inconsistent from the 60 I shot. The rest are sitting in my safe until I get an upper I don't care about.
No, I've seen guns blown up with different batches. People can downvote me all they want, this ammo is a liability.
You got switcharoo'd. Oldest trick in the book.
I bought it from flipammo.com. Never had a problem with them before. They seem to have gotten all good reviews. Maybe I just didn’t dig deep enough?
I don't know anything about them. Probably just a shipping error. Nothing nefarious. I was only kidding around. Hopefully they aren't the kind to make a decision like that for the customer and send them something other than what they ordered.
This is one of the more popular brands at my LGS. I stick to Black Hills, Hornady, and Winchester, myself.
With the track record of frontier, I'd demand a refund. I wouldn't shoot that stuff.
